Polar Allosaur/Australovenator

The Polar Allosaur is one of the strangest additions to the Walking with... series. At the time, it was based on some scarce fossils that were believed to belong to an Allosaur, though they are now believed to belong to some form of Abelisaur (the same family as Carnotaurus and Manjungasaurus). However, in recent years, the Polar Allosaur has gained a new identity; Australovenator, a predatory dinosaur related to the infamous Tyrannosaurus. However, Australovenator wasn't discovered at the time the series was made, so what this creature truly was even supposed to be at the time is quite the enigma.

Basic info

Author's note: Although the Polar Allosaur was created before the discovery of Australovenator, official sources state the creature is the aforementioned carnivore, therefore, info about the Australovenator will be listed here. During the "appearances" section, Australovenator will be referred to as "Polar Allosaur".

Meaning of name: Australovenator means "southern hunter".

Time of existence: Australovenator lived in the late Cretaceous, 99.6 million years to 93.5 million years ago.

Diet: Australovenator was a carnivore, and fed on other dinosaurs that lived around them.

Threats: Not much is believed to have been a threat to Australovenator, although it is possible that some larger predators could have attacked them and stolen food from them.

Size: Australovenator grew to 20 feet long.

Attributes: Australovenator was a very large predator, with quite strong jaws and teeth that helped them bring down their prey. They also had quite long claws, possibly used to hold down or injure prey. It is possible Australovenator had some feathery covering as well.

Episode 4-Giant of the Skies

The Polar Allosaur appears in the post credits scene, where he is seen attacking the clan of Leaellynasaura.

Episode 5-Spirits of the Ice Forest

The Polar Allosaur plays a major role in this episode. The Allosaur first appears during the spring segment, where he is seen stalking the Leaellynasaura clan. It is stated he is a summer visitor from farther north. He approaches the clan, attempting to ambush them. However, he ends up stepping on a branch, alerting the Leaellynasaura sentry of his presence. Foiled, he charges out of his hiding place, roaring and attempting to catch one of the dinosaurs. However, he fails and knocks a tree down in frustration while roaring, watching his prey escape into the undergrowth and walking away. Later on, the Allosaur is seen stalking a herd of Muttaburrasaurus, although it is not a hunt. He is merely testing the herd, trying to weed out the weak and sick. As he walks next to them, one bull stands off with him, trumpeting at him. The Allosaur growls before running off and returning to the forest.

The Allosaur faces off against a Muttaburrasaurus

During the summer months, an old male Muttaburrasaurus dies, and the male Polar Allosaur is seen scavenging off of the carcass. A second Allosaur, a female, arrives, also having smelled the carcass. However, the male does not take kindly to her presence, roaring at her to ward her off. However, before she leaves, she takes a chunk of meat from the corpse before retreating back into the forest, waiting for the male to eat his fill. Soon, autumn arrives, and as the herd of Muttaburrasaurus leaves, two get lost in the forest, which causes the Leaellynasaura sentries to get distracted. The Allosaur takes this oppurtunity to ambush the Leaellynasaura again, this time succeeding in catching one. He smells the corpse of the dominant female before eating her head as the clan watches. This is the last scene the Polar Allosaur appears in.
