Brachiosaurus

Few dinosaurs got as tall as the titan that is Brachiosaurus. High above the other dinosaurs in the Jurassic, Brachiosaurus browsed the tops of the many trees in the praries of its prehistoric home. To the other dinosaurs on the Jurassic praries, the sight of the massive Brachiosaurus must have been awe-inspiring.

Basic info

Meaning of name: Brachiosaurus means "arm lizard".

Time of existence: Brachiosaurus lived in the late Jurassic, 161.2 to 145 million years ago.

Diet: Brachiosaurus was a herbivore, and fed on the tops of trees like conifers, ginkgo, and tall ferns.

Threats: Despite their immense size, Brachiosaurus was not immune to predation. Large carnivorous dinosaurs like Allosaurus were able to attack and ocassionally kill Brachiosaurus, though they would most likely attack younger or sick individuals.

Size: Brachiosaurus could grow to 85 feet long, though some have been found to grow to 98 feet.

Attributes: Naturally, Brachiosaurus' most famous attribute was its long neck. Held vertically like a giraffe, it allowed these massive reptiles to feed on the tops of trees that few other dinosaurs could reach. They also had a large lump on their heads, though its not known exactly what this was used for.

Walking with Dinosaurs

Episode 2-Time of the Titans

Brachiosaurus plays a very minor, but extremely memorable role in the second episode. After three juvenile Diplodocus are forced from the forest after a devastating fire, they wander the prarie searching for an adult herd. As they wander, a giant dinosaur begins to emerge from a clearing behind them, growling. Never before had they encountered such gigantic animals, but luckily for them, the camera pans up to show the long neck and small head of the gentle Brachiosaurus. The giant briefly wanders behind the group, and soon joins a second individual feeding on the trees. The two begin to move on to find more food while communicating to each other. They do not appear for the remainder of the episode.

The Ballad of Big Al

Although never identified, Brachiosaurus does appear in the special, though it is more of a cameo.  Two are first seen wandering the plains as we are shown the world Al has been born in.  They are also shown approaching a Stegosaurus.
