Chapter 7- The lake

"Everything you can imagine is real."
― Pablo Picasso

They all watched as the ice began to melt and crack away. "We need to cross now!" Alex said in his stern voice, this was their only hope. "Wait, maybe we should think about this." Susan shouted "We don't have time." Peter told the older girl. "I was just trying to be realistic." Susan points out.

"No, you're trying to be smart...as usual!" Peter tells her, earning a glare from the girl. They all begin climbing down to the lake Alex picks up his youngest sister and goes to step on the ice but it instantly begins making a cracking noise.

"Wait, maybe I should go first." Mr Beaver suggests. "Maybe you should." Peter says while Alex says "all of us together have more of a chance of us all making it."

"You've been sneaking second helpings haven't you?" Mrs Beaver asks even in this situation she sounded happy. "Well you never know what meal is gonna be your last, especially with your cooking." Alex smiled at the two; he wanted something like this but knew it would never happen. They all begin to walk across the ice, careful of where they stood.

"if mum knew what we were doing..." Susan began but alex stopped her "Well Mum's not here!"

Lucy notices wolves which have begun heading their way when she looks at the top of the hill "Oh no!" "Run!!" Alex ordered. The Wolves leap in front of them, growling & sneering. Alex pulls out his sword preparing to fight the animals.

"Put that down boy , someone might get hurt ." Mr. Beaver is pinned down "Don't worry about me! Slit his throat !" beaver tells the eldest boy. "Leave now while you can , and your brother leaves with you." the leader of the wolves growls. "Stop Alex , maybe we should listen to him!" Susan shouts to him.

"Smart girl ." "Don't listen to him. Kill him. Kill him now!" Mr Beaver shouts. "Look, just because some man in a red suit hands you a sword doesn't make you a hero! So just drop it!" Susan shouted at him. "No Alex! Narnia needs ya! Gut him while ye have the chance!" Mr Beaver shouts back. Alex gets closer to the wolf pointing the sword towards the creature.

"What's it gonna be, Son of Adam? We're not going to wait forever. And neither is the river."

"ALEX!!" Lucy shouts, clinging to his neck as ice begins to collapse onto them. "Hold onto me!" all three of his siblings keep tight hold of him. Alex Stabs sword into the ice, and they all begin to float away on the ice Alex trying to hold onto them all but struggling. They get to the shore. But only three of the children made it Alex has Lucy's coat in hand, but no Lucy.

"What have you done?!" Susan screams "Lucy!" Alex begins shouting out. Tears in his eyes, his voice hoarse from how loud he is shouting. The younger girl suddenly appears out of nowhere. "Has anyone seen my coat?"

"Your brother has you well looked after." Mr Beaver told the youngest girl. Everyone laughs and Alex embraces the girl. "I don't think you'll be needing those coats any more!" Mrs Beaver points out.

They walk through and see spring coming about and flowers budding as they leave there coats and head toward Aslan's Camp.

//

 They all soon entered the camp which was full of life. Alex now had his sage green shirt first few buttons open and untucked from his light brown pants. No one was no longer wet due to the heat.

Alex looked around everyone here was different no one was the same he couldn't fight the grin which was on his face. "Why are they all staring at us?" Susan asked through her smile. "Maybe they think you look funny." Lucy told the older girl cheekily from beside alex.

Alex and Peter both smile "Oh stop your fussing Mrs. Beaver. You look lovely." Mr Beaver tells his wife. A centaur stands in front of them all staring at them. Alex, unsure what to do, pulls out his sword. "We have come to see Aslan." His voice is strong and he shows no fear.

The tent starts to blow in the breeze and everyone kneels. Aslan comes from the tent and all the children kneel in respect. "Welcome Alexander and Peter Adam's son, Welcome Susan and Lucy daughters-of- Eve. Welcome Beavers. You have my thanks, but where is the fifth?"

They all stand up and Alex speaks up "That's why we are here sir. We need your help"

"We had a little trouble along the way." Peter then says. "He's been captured by the White Witch" Susan tells the big creature. "Captured!" the crowds yell in Mr. Beaver speaks up for the first time "He betrayed them, your Excellence!"

"Then he has betrayed us all!" the centaurs shouts. Alex glares at the centaur "My brother did no such thing he made a mistake he trusted someone who he didn't no he put trust into the witch just as we are putting trust into you all!" The Pevensie children were all shocked at his outburst but knew all Alex wanted was to protect them all. "Peace Oreius Alexander." Aslan speaks calmly.

"It is my fault really. I was too hard on him." Peter mumbles. "We all were. "Susan says, putting a comforting hand on Peter's shoulder. "Sir, he's our brother." Lucy cries to the lion. "I know dear and that makes the betrayal all the worse. It may be harder than you think."

Alex is standing on a hill overlooking everything when he hears Aslan's voice behind him. "That is Cair Paravel of the five thrones, one of which you must sit as High King." Alex is speechless. He had never had a responsibility like this before yet he looked after all of his siblings but that was a natural instinct to care for the four children.

"You doubt the prophecy." Aslan states. "No, that's just it...I'm not who you think I am. I'm not some brave strong person who can be a king. I'm not even accepted in my own world, never mind somewhere I'm supposed to be king!"

"Alex Pevensie formerly of Finchley. Beaver also said you are willing to do everything you possibly can to protect those you know, not just those you care for. Alex there is a Deep Magic that rules over Narnia. It defines right from wrong and helps us fulfill destinies, both yours and mine."

"I don't think I will be able to. I can't even protect my family" Alex tells the lion, sighing. "You were able to get your family here."

"Not all of them." Alex says his voice cracking. "I will do what I can for Edmund. I too want my family safe."

Suddenly Susan's horn is heard, Alex runs to her direction, Aslan follows him. Alex spots both his sisters in a tree wolfs attempting to get them. Alex comes back through the river pulling his sword out pointing it to the two wolves which are growling.

"Alex watch out!" Susan yells down to him. Aslan runs down to him along with Peter the centaur Oreius and other creatures, Aslan pins the second wolf to the ground and says to his group "Stay back. This is Alex's battle." The wolf attacks Alex jumping on him. When there is no movement everyone believes he is dead.

"Alex... no!" both sisters yell. They, along with Peter run up to him pushing the wolf off him, and see he is alive; they look disgusted by the wolf; all three hug there eldest brother. Aslan lets go of the other wolf which runs away.

"Follow him! He'll lead you to Edmund. Alex, clean your sword." Aslan orders.

Alex once he has cleaned his sword kneels in front of Aslan who speaks up "Rise, Sir Alexander Wolfsbane--Knight of Narnia. Alex looks at Aslan in awe.  His siblings embrace him excited about this.

//

It's now morning when Aslan and Edmund are on the rock above camp, spots his youngest brother standing by aslan on the hill he notices the two talking. The two girls exit their tent along with Peter who exits his own tent.

"EDMUND!" Lucy screams, gaining her brother's attention but Alex stops her running to him seeing his little brother talking to aslan. The lion and Edmund walk down to the Pevensie siblings. "What's done is done. There is no reason to bring up the past with your brother." Aslan says before walking off.

"Hello..." Edmund greets shyly. Lucy is the first to speak up " Oh, Edmund" the younger girl hugs him and Susan does too. "How are you feeling?" Susan asks her younger brother. "I'm feeling kinda tired." he tells her but before Alex can say anything Peter speaks up. "Get some rest...and Edmund try not to wander off again."

Alex hugs the younger boy but notices a cut on his lip "Oh that not hurting is it Edmund." Alex fusses but lets him go to sleep when he sees how tired the boy is.
