When the Fire Nation attacked

Long chapter goes BRR

---

I've have been deliberately avoiding the council of elders.

And so far, it's been working!

For a bunch of wise elders they can't even catch a 11 year old.

With everything going on, it's been a mess. You've been avoiding the topic of the Oracle whenever your with Aang, but he just keeps getting more and more curious.

But thankfully he's not to big in the brain department and haven't figured out anything...yet.

But the main issue here is–

'HOW AM I GONNA SURVIVE 100 yEarS?! I mean- I could always runaway with Aang but would he even let me join him? What happens if he leaves without me!!?

Huffing you fidgeted with your bracelet, one that Aang had made for you when you were little, Aang having a matching (f/c) one you made. (Our bracelet is orange btw)

(I searched for some simple matching bracelets, I picked two so you can choose. Sorry if you don't like either :c )

Walking to one of the many playing areas in the Southern Air Temple I see some of the younger kids playing with Aang.

Looking over at me the younger kids smiled, " (Y/n)! (Y/n)! Come play with us!"

Because of my past I had a soft spot for little kids, becoming a babysitter anytime we had a party and having to take care of my younger cousins, I guess it's my mothers instincts?

Not knowing how to say no I sighed and reluctantly nodded, deciding to push those troublesome thoughts to the back of my mind.

I Looked at Aang who had a smirk on his face, he knew that I couldn't say no.

I blew a raspberry at him.

The kids grabbed both my hands dragging me to the others.

"(Y/n) your gonna help us win right?!" One of the little kids beamed looking up at me.

Raising an eyebrow I looked down at them, "Oh? And with what do you need help with winning?" I questioned.

"Aang keeps beating us in freeze tag! No matter what we do he always gets us!" One of the others whined.

"But now that your here you can help us beat him, right?!" Another said with stars in his eyes.

'How the heck do you win a game of freeze tag without being 'it'?' I sweatdropped.

"Well–", "What makes you think that she can beat me?"

My eye twitched.

I stared at Aang who had a smug face.

"Oh? You wanna bet?" I asked.

"It's not a bet when I've already won." He teased, crossing his arms and leaning back.

'Motherfucker–'

—-
Quickly unfreezing another kid I swiftly dodged Aang's attempt at freezing me.

Panting slightly, I immediately turn and run to the left.

Being the oldest player in the game does have its pro's but it also comes with its con's– a disadvantage if you will.

You become a main target.

Aang had been targeting me the whole game.

And most of the kids were either frozen or had given up because of exhaustion.

It soon came down to me and Aang, the remaining players.

"Give up yet?" Aang panted.

"Not a chance shorty." I smirked. Seeing as he has yet to grow any taller in the past year or so, just means I don't have to come up with a new nickname for a while. Heck isn't he shorter than Katara? Damn imagine being shorter than your crush or future girlfriend.

Aang gave me a glare.

Quickly running to the side I ran underneath a bridge and sharply turned to the right out of sight.

I silently used my bending to push myself up and over the small ledge of the bridge.

Aang quickly ran after me, "Hey where di-WHOA!"

I tackled him to the ground and grabbed his hands, pinning them above his head so that he couldn't tag me.

Groaning Aang opened his eyes only to see me straddling him while smirking.

His eyes widen and he froze.

"I'm pretty sure this means I win right?" I smirked, staring down at him.

"I-I WelL-y-YES!?" Aang wheezed out, his face turning a light shade of pink.

I stared at him confused, until I realized what I had just done.

'OH SHI- PURE THOUGHTS PURE THOUGHTS PURE THOUGHTS-'

Before I could get off of Aang a cough was heard to our left, me and Aang snapped our heads towards the cough.

There stood Gyatso with an amused face.

"It's not-", "(Y/n) you did it!!", "YESS!!", "HAHA, take that Aang!", "(Y/n) is the best!"

Before either of us could say anything we were tackled by the little kids, most of them aiming at me, I ended up faceplanting into Aang's chest.

'Oh GOd-FUCK WHY ARE THEY SO HEAVY?! BETTER YET WHY ARE THERE SO MAny!?'

After the kids got off I immediately got off of Aang and stood up, feeling some heat on my cheeks I placed my hands against them to try and cool them off.

It wasn't like I was blushing- just feeling hot and tired from the intense game of freeze tag. Right?

Feeling them cool down I turn back to Aang and helped him up. The kids from earlier being distracted and talking amongst themselves.

Greeting Gyatso we walked up to him and asked him why he's here.

"I wanted to check up on you and Aang, also (Y/n) I would like to speak with you for a moment." He said, smiling at us both.

I trusted Gyatso so I didn't feel the need to hide from him, he's helped me multiple times during the past few months while I avoided the other elders.

Nodding I said a quick goodbye to Aang and the others and followed Gyatso.

---

"THEY WANT TO WHAT!?" I shouted.

"*sigh* I'm trying to convince them otherwise but they are being very stubborn. I did manage to delay them telling Aang about him being the avatar, but only by a few days." Gyatso explained.

"But that doesn't have anything to do with them wanting to separate me and Aang. I get that we are in a time of need but what good would that do? All it'll do is give Aang major stress issues." I frowned.

"Don't worry I'll help Aang in any way I can," Gyatso smiled softly at me, "But I do know they don't plan on telling Aang about you just yet, so you don't need to worry about that."

"Well that's a relief, I guess we can't really do much at this point can we?" I asked glancing at him.

He gave me a small smile and put his hand on my back and started walking, me walking next to him.

"Yes I suppose so, but I believe that everything will turn out alright in the end. How about you help me with some pies I made this morning?" He said glancing down at me.

"HELL YEAH!"

---

It has been a little over a week since the Elders told Aang he was the Avatar, and it definitely affected him.

Because the Elders didn't want me to be within 5 feet of Aang, me and Aang hardly ever got to see each other. The only time we did was when we'd sneak out at night.

While Aang was pressured with mastering airbending, I on the other hand have been stressing about the attack from the fire nation. And because of my horribly memory I couldn't remember on what day they attack.

All I knew was that soon after Aang ran away they attacked.

Sighing, I walked around looking for Aang, he hadn't visited last night and I wanted to make sure he was ok.

Walking up to his door I was about to knock when the door opened and a hand pulled me in.

"ACK-" I was immediately brought into a tight embrace by Aang. Confused, I rubbed his back and waited till he let go.

But he didn't.

"Aang?.. Is something wrong, did those rude kids leave you out of their game again? Don't worry I'll-" I was cut off when I heard him mumble into my shoulder.

Before I could ask him what he had said, he finally let go of me and sat on his bed pulling me along. Now sitting beside him, he turned to me, "Sorry I didn't visit you yesterday... I was kinda tired from training."

Blinking at him, I stared at his face, he had bags under his eyes and looked like he had just had a mental break down.

Deciding not to say anything, I replied, "It's fine, I just got a little worried is all. I came to check up on you."

"...(Y/n) have you ever wanted to explore outside of the temple?" Aang asked hesitantly, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye.

My heart dropped.

'Is he..?'

"Well I've always wanted to go to Ba Sing Se, but I wouldn't want to go if you or the others can't go with me." I said looking at him.

Aang opened his mouth to respond but jumped when a knock was heard. "Aang it's time for your airbending training."

Panicking me and Aang fumbled around, "Y-YEAH UH, j-just let me get changed!-" Aang said leaning his back against the door.

I quickly climb through the window, after giving him a quick goodbye hug, and jumped down. I creeped along side the wall in hopes of not being seen by the elder.

---

I was pacing around in my room lost in thought.

'Is Aang planning on running away? Did the council decide to separate Gyatso and Aang already? What should I do?! Should I go find Gyatso and tell him about Aang's plan? No, Aang has to leave or else he'll die along side the other airbenders. But...what should I do?.. I want to continue to live with Aang by my side but.. That's selfish of me. Knowing that nobody will survive the fire nation's attack. ..Maybe with my strong bending I can help prevent the TOTALLY massacre of the Air Nomads! Even if I do die.. I know that in the end Aang will win the war- So the least I can do is help some of his people survive.'

I flinched when the door to my room burst open.

Quickly turning around I see a panicked Gyatso and my dad. Raising an eyebrow I stared at them.

"(Y/n), Aang has run away." Gyatso frantically explained to me.

My heart stopped.

Quickly looking out the window I could see the rain pouring outside.

While I had internally panicked about what to do, I failed to notice the rain.

'SHIT!'

"Aang left this for you."

Turning back to Gyatso I see a scroll in his hand. Which had my name on it, along with a orange ribbon.

Gently taking the scroll I held it in my hands, knowing that this would be the last thing that Aang would give me.

The last thing...

Swallowing down the lump in my throat, I grabbed a hold of the ribbon and pulled–

"AHHHHHHHHHH!!"

My blood ran cold as a bloody scream rang out. I snapped my head toward the window and gasped.

Fire Nation.

Everything sank in. This is it. The moment that I've dreaded since the beginning.

My dad grabbed a hold of me and we all ran to the living room.

Handing me over to Gyatso my dad spoke, "take her somewhere safe. I'll help any way I can here."

My eyes widened, I opened my mouth to protest but before I could our door burst open and fire nation soldiers come running in.

They started firing at us while my dad and Gyatso deflected the attacks, not wanting to harm them.

The monks had told us that we should never take a life.

It was probably this fact alone why airbenders were killed, they didn't want to harm anyone as they believed in peace.

I helped as much as I could, me still holding Aang's scroll in my right hand.

I had just thrown a soldier at a wall when another crept up behind me. Not having time to deflect their attack I chose to dodge but–

"GAH!", I found that my feet were tied together, the soldier I had thrown against the wall had thrown a net at my feet.

I froze as the soldier from before prepared to finish me off.

Feeling my throat burn with a familiar sensation I prepared myself, but before I could do anything I hear someone's footsteps running towards me.

"DAD!!"

My dad had taken the hit for me.

"Gyatso NOW!" My dad groaned as he pushed the soldiers back.

I felt myself being pick up and turned to see Gyatso, he started running out the back door with me.

"NO!—DAD!" I screamed as I saw my dad give me a final smile before he was covered in flames.

I was breathing heavily, on the brink of tears, I turned towards Gyatso and choked back a sob.

No. Not now. I can't cry right now.

"We must get you to safety, we have already lost the Avatar, we mustn't lose the Oracle to." Gyatso stated, as we ran into a tent.

All I could hear were screams. Just like when I had died in my past life. There were burn marks everywhere.

As we tried to catch our breathe more soldiers ran in, Gyatso stood in front of me protectively.

I held Aang's scroll tight against my chest, I glared at the soldiers as the came closer, pepared to fight.

"(Y/n) I want you to run. Far from here, go find Aang and protect each other." Gyatso said as he began getting into a stance.

"But I can't just leave you here! I can help!–" I pleaded desperately, but one look from Gyatso told me I didn't have a choice.

Clenching my teeth, I spun around and ran out the back of the tent. I ran and ran. All I could hear was the pounding of my heart as I ran. The painful screams of others were blurred as I ran.

I tightened my fists, searching for some comfort as I at least had Aang's scroll.

But it wasn't there.

'No no no no NO NO NO!'

I stopped running and turned back looking if I had just recently dropped it, but I couldn't see it. I bit my lip as I decided whether or not to go back and look for it.

I started running back to the tent were I had left Gyatso. It was a miracle that none of the other soldiers had seen me yet.

Quickly entering the tent I looked around as it appeared to be empty. I soon spotted the scroll in the hands of—

I stopped breathing.

There laid Gyatso, severely burned and barely recognizable.

Slowly walking to him, I then gently got down on my knees and grabbed the scroll from his burned hands.

My eyes dulled and tears began to fall, but no noise was made as to not attract the attention of the fire nation soldiers.

Slightly trembling, I began to stand, I held the scroll in my hand. It was badly burned and most likely not readable anymore.

The last bit of light in my eyes died. Not only had I just last everyone I loved, but I couldn't even help them. I was just a burden.

'This would make a perfect villain origin.'

I chuckled, ah yes, my coping mechanism to anything and everything. Humor.

Calming my breathing, I soon began walking towards the screams of the innocent as I could only feel one thing.

Pure rage.

--

Huffing, I punched another guy to the ground, I began to back up as I was surrounded.

I had knocked out MANY soldiers already, but they just kept coming.

I had burns here and there, nothing deathly serious, but I was starting to feel tired.

I tried saving many other Air Nomads as well, but it was all in vain as they were later overwhelmed by the soldiers.

Feeling my throat burn as the all to familiar sensation came back, I prepared myself once again.

"SKY DRAGON ROAR!"

Many soldiers were wounded by my attack and fell back, giving me time to breathe.

I felt lightheaded and nauseous, having been fighting for hours on end, using my bending non-stop.

I began to feel overwhelmed as three times as many soldiers surrounded me.

'Damn. Is this my limit? I couldn't even save anyone besides that weird looking cat.'

Having no strength to continue, I awaited the flaming hot fire to engulf me.

But that didn't happen.

Instead I felt a warm bright light. Shutting my eyes, I blinked a couple times to get rid of the specks in my vision.

When I could see again I was flabbergasted, "Wha–*GASP* OH MY GOD IM BLUE?!"

My whole body was blue and transparent, I quickly look up as I see the soldiers flee.

"HEY! Where the hell are you going?! I wasn't finish with you—OOF" I said as I try and grab a soldier, but I slipped right through them.

"What the quack?" I mumbled as I sat up and found myself in a room full of statues. I looked closer at them, were they the avatar statues?

No, none of these people were Aang's past life—so who were they?

Could they be?...

I was interrupted in my train of thought when I was hit with a massive amount of exhaustion.

Laying back on the ground I could barely keep my eyes open. My body ached and my wounds stung like a bitch.

Finally giving in, I let myself drift off to sleep.

Not knowing I'd sleep for 100 years.
