Interrogatory

Surgery went smoothly and even thought they told me that I couldn't stay I did it anyways. I wish I had obeyed. Seeing Mitch under scalpels and different surgical knifes almost made me throw up but no. I couldn't leave him, I had to do it for him.

Halfway through the surgery Kirstie and I made eye contact, it was time. I took a deep breath and signalled her to go on. We would have to find out later if it worked out.

A couple of hours later it was over, Kirstie put down all the equipment, turned off the machines and Mitch was taken to a room next door to fight off the rest of the anaesthesia. I jumped when a hand touched my shoulder, it was Kirstie.

"I think I did it" She said. She had sweat drops falling down her forehead.

"Okay" And my hands were trembling as if there were no tomorrow.

"Hey, calm down, every little thing it's gonna be alright" She sung the last part and managed to make me smile.

"Did you have any inconvenience while operating the patient Kirstin" We both turned around to the sound of Ryan's voice.

"No sir, everything was okay, I managed to remove everything that was causing the blockade" She said proudly.

"Good" He looked at me straight in the eyes and then turned around without saying a word.

"I hate him" Kirstie and I muttered at the same time when he was far ahead.

I looked to my left and saw Avi waving for us to go where he was, he then told us that we would have to wait at least two hours until Mitch fully woke up.

"Can I see him?" I asked. Avi knew that it was pointless to argue with me when the topic concerned Mitch so he simply nodded.

"You've got five minutes, then I want both of you out of here. We will reunite again in an hour and a half" We were the ones who nodded this time.

We walked down the hallway until we reached the door, I hesitated so Kirstie was the one who opened it. It was a small room, it only had one window, a small couch near the bed and a fan on the ceiling. In front of the door it was the bed and lying on top of it it was Mitch. His head was tilted to the side facing us, he had it bandaged. I'll make a note for as to tease him about his hair when he wakes up. Luckily, he didn't look as bad as I had imagined. He was a little but paler but that was all.

I walked towards him slowly and Kirstie just sat on the couch to give me some space. I knelt down in front of him and took his hand in mine. I started to draw invisible circles with my fingers. My hand then caressed his cheek and put a strand of his hair behind his ear. He looked so peaceful.

"You're going to be fine, we're not going to let you die" I kissed his hand and stood up, Kirstie was standing next to me. She grabbed my hand and we both exited the room only to find Ryan with his back against the wall looking at us suspiciously.

"We should all get going upstairs" I said a little bit harsher than I intended.

"Yes, we should. Ladies first" He smiled. I didn't trust that smile. And so we all went up to our meeting point.

• ---------------------- •

"Okay so this is how we will proceed" Avi said to all of us. All of us, being Kirstie, Alex, Ryan, Avi, and me. "Mitch will be seated inside this room" He pointed a little square in a map. "And one of us will ask the questions. That way we will feel safer"

"And who will do it?" Alex asked.

"Ryan of course" No way in hell. "He has dealt with Mitch before and knows him very well" Was he kidding right?

"I beg to differ" I said. "Mitch was my case and it still is, I've found out more about him than anyone in this room. He trusts me, it will be easier if I do it" Avi looked pissed off, probably because I questioned him. But this wasn't the first time so I don't.... Ryan, he was making Avi extremely nervous.

"Let's see. I've worked with Mitch for 2 years, you only four months. I'm one of the best psychologists in the state and leader of an extremely successful working team back in New York. And what are you? A single psychologist who jumps from case to case, never establishing. How many cases have you solved? How many patients have you cured? I've solved 145 cases and cured 167 patients so think again before ever contradicting me" I was speechless. My hands turned into fists and I had to suppress the urge of hitting the hell out of him.

"Now, let me do my work kid" He grabbed the file which contained the questions and entered the room. We were all watching behind a glass, Mitch couldn't see us even if he wanted to. I crossed my arms and watched, it was the only thing I could do and that bothered me.

The only thing separating them was a table, Ryan laid the file on top of it and sat back. Mitch was silent, breathing normally. You had to know him really well to sense how tense he was, he was fidgeting with his fingers down the table, a clear sign of nervousness and when he looked towards us I noticed a clear hint of fear in his eyes.

"Do you know who I am?" Ryan asked.

"The bastard who ruined my life" Ryan stiffed and I chuckled. "Oh you want a name?" He nodded. "Ryan Fucking Grant" Mitch gave him an innocent smile.

"Do you know who you are?" Ryan asked again.

"I'm Mitchell Grassi, 22 years old, my birthday was the 24th of July. I was in an accident 3 years ago and got Anterograde Amnesia" Mitch's eyes widened. His head shot towards the glass and smiled brightly, he remembered. But oh god I didn't know his birthday had passed.

"We will get to the accident in a few minutes, now do you recognise these people?" Ryan took out a few picture of the members of staff and passed them to him.

"This is Mark, he works in the Psychology ward" He couldn't stop smiling and neither could I. "Alex, Pharmacology Ward. Kirstie! Is Kirstie in there?" He pointed towards the glass.

"Yes she is" He laughed and waved towards us, Kirstie begun to cry. I held her close, I had a feeling I would start crying soon too.

"Avi, the one who runs this hospital" He then mentioned a bunch of people that I only recognised by their names.

"And this?" I leaned in to find out it was a picture of me, I was extremely nervous.

Mitch grabbed the picture and stared at it for a while, he couldn't hide the smile that was creeping in his face. "Doc, my psychologist. Also known as Scott" He never took his eyes from the picture, that was the first picture they took of me when I got here. I was wearing a suit and my hair was styled up.

The interrogation went on with Ryan making Mitch do simple memory exams to tests his capability, though in most of them Mitch wasn't cooperating. I bet he was just tired but with every passing minute Ryan was growing more annoyed.

"Okay last question for today, what do you remember about the accident?" I took a deep breath, Mitch's answer would determine wether we succeeded in out plan or not.

"Nothing" Kirstie and I looked at each other.

"Don't be a fool and answer"

"I-I don't know, I swear I don't remember"

"Bullshit!" Ryan smashed his hand agains the table and made us all jump.

"We should call it a day Avi" I suggested him. "Mitch clearly needs some time to rest and Ryan time to calm down"

Avi pushed a button and his voice echoed through the speakers. "Ryan let's call it a day, we will continue tomorrow"

Ryan stood up and stormed off, Mitch just sat there confused about everything.
