A Cure

"Okay this is going to hurt a little bit" Kirstie said. Her voice came out a little but muffled thanks for the surgeon's mask she was wearing. She had just finished a surgery when we asked for her help.

"A little?!" Mitch hissed in pain and leaned closer to me involuntarily.

"I wasn't the one who decided to play hide and seek inside the lab. Who's brilliant idea was it? Nope, don't tell me. I know" She glared at me. I didn't know how she was doing it, bandaging Mitch's right arm and talking at the same time.

"Besides, Alex is going to murder you. He had just gotten the job and you've already messed up some of his investigations" I added.

"Hey! Don't blame it all on me! You were playing too" He rolled his eyes.

"Tell me, who slipped and fell all over his working table and broke some of his equipment?"

"Shut up. Both of you" Kirstie interrupted us. "And you," She said pointing at Mitch. "Unless you want to have a scar for life stop moving" Mitch swallowed one last whimper and his arm was done. He fixed his shirt and hopped off of the counter just when the phone started ringing.

"Maldonado here" She said. "Uhum, ah, okay. Yeah sure. Bye" She turned to us. "We have to go to Dr. Kaplan's office, he says it's important" Mitch and I gazed at each other.

• ----------------------- •

Avi's office was the same as the one I had been months ago but it was somehow different now. There were files and papers spread all over the place, X-Ray pictures hanging on the walls and odd diagrams filled with lines and numbers.

The X-Rays in the wall were actually of brains. Besides each of them there were drawings that showed brain patterns and their electric waves. I didn't know what was all of this about but it suddenly hit me when I saw Mitch. He tensed his jaw and his expression was unreadable, he looked deep in thought but with just one look at his eyes I realised what the results meant and who's brain was printed over the white paint.

"If you guys were wondering what was inside my brain well... There you go" Mitch said monotonously.

"Mitch, Scott, Kirstin thank god you're here and I'm glad it didn't take you too long" Avi eagerly said.

"Your office it's just at the end of the hall" I hit Mitch on his arm to shut him up, he glared at me with such anger that I promised myself not to do it ever again. He rolled his eyes and squeezed my hand subtly to let me know he wasn't mad at me.

"We gave a lot to talk about but first things first: We found a cure"

"WHAT?" The three of us shouted. Was this even possible? Does this meant that Mitch was going to remember and finally be able to walk out of this hospital?

Out of the three of us I was the one who first got the power of speech back. "Who's 'we'?"

"You and me dummy" Okay I was confused as fuck right now. "Thanks to YOUR reports and your ability to make Mitch's brain function differently"

"What do you mean by 'differently'?" Mitch asked.

"During the past two years we've been studying your brain and as you perfectly know it has a 'blocked' section that doesn't let you recall new information" We all nodded. "Well, we found a way to remove it"

Kirstie was the one who spoke. "But we've already tried it. Besides, it's extremely dangerous, one wrong move and we could make him forget everything or worst: kill him" She sounded concerned and she had the right to be.

"I know but an you guys let me explain?" I sighed and we all took a seat. This was going to be a long evening. "Okay, since Scott's been treating Mitch his brain has been functioning differently. Wait no, let me re-phrase that. It started to show some patterns that were never there before, his emotions are more vivid. It's like suddenly you went out of 'automatic mode'"

"Thanks to that, I was able to read your brain easily and had a clear view of what's happening. The thing is that the 'blockade' we were talking about isn't really a full one, there are cracks. That's why even though you don't have a full memory you still can remember things through feelings"

"But last time it didn't work why-" Kirstie started but was quickly interrupted.

"Last time we didn't have a clear path. Years ago Ryan found out the root to Mitch's condition and as we were too anxious to help him we didn't care to check if we could actually do it but now we have a chance. A real chance to cure Mitch"

"I don't know, how are we going to do it?" I asked.

"We use those cracks to our advantage, we use them as passages towards the main problem and by doing it there's no way we will damage the brain" Avi sounded so sure that he made me believe it was possible.

"So you're just going to open me up and remove whatever is it that's fucking with my brain?" Mitch sounded sceptical and I couldn't blame him, it was all too surreal and easy.

"Basically" Avi finished.

"I don't know, what if-" Mitch didn't have time to finish.

"If you keep living in the 'what ifs' you'll never know if it's actually possible. I know you have your doubts but I truly believe we have it this time"

"If you succeed and that thing is removed, am I going to be able to remember everything?" Mitch asked.

"You might be a few days under medication but apart from that yes, you'll remember everything. The accident, your past, what happened to your parents" Avi's voice lowered towards the end and Mitch gave him a sad smile.

"Then, when's the surgery?"
