The Pain Of Honesty

The school holds a celebration of their sporting success, but one person is out to spoil the party.

Cyrus POV

The school had a pretty successful run at most of the sports we played. Today we were going to celebrate all of the hard work of our athletes. This was like heaven for me, because I got to be visually proud of Jonah.

I had accepted that now my crush would never lead to a relationship, so I was happy to be his best friend. I know how much effort he had put in as the captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team, and the Space Otters were undefeated.

We were called to an assembly as soon as we arrived, clearly this was going to be an all day thing. I met up with the girls, who smiled softly at me.

Buffy: It's been a great year.

Andi: We can all be proud.

Me: And Jonah... *sighs*.

Buffy: Cyrus, why don't you just go out with him already?

Me: Because he's my best friend. I don't want to lose him.

Andi: I think this is getting a little silly.

I felt angry with what Andi had said, it hurt when she called me silly. I would've thought she'd know better than anyone that it wasn't silly.

Me: What?

Andi: You can't go on like this, I know that it hurts, but you should just be honest.

Me: That'll be the day.

Buffy: I think what you mean is, that'll be TODAY!

Me: Let's just go to assembly, shall we?

With my mood changed to one of negativity, I sat down next to Buffy, with Andi the other side of her. There was a subdued atmosphere, until all of the Space Otters went on stage. Principal Metcalf started the celebration.

Metcalf: So let's praise our brilliant Ultimate Frisbee team! Well done to the Space Otters!

There was a loud cheer from everyone, although I tried to be the loudest. There was a projector that was showing pictures on one of the walls. It showed the team winning, Jonah catching a Frisbee, and then something weird happened.

I looked at the wall and saw that there was a poem, which had been handwritten. I read it with interest, and then went into shock.

Cyrus Goodman,
He is the greatest thing,
I really hope one day,
I'll give you a special ring,
One that proves our love,
Through thick and thin,
With you I am more happy,
Than I have ever been
Love Jonah xx

The whole room went completely silent. I saw Jonah, who looked absolutely terrified. He glanced at me quickly before running out of the room. Buffy and Andi were wide eyed, which made me anxious.

Me: Oh my...

Andi: What are you waiting for?

Buffy: This is your chance, go get him!

I did as they said, and ran after Jonah. As I went, I heard many students cheering me on, but I had to ignore it and find my friend.

Jonah POV

Why did this have to happen? Cyrus and I had a really positive relationship, and now he probably hated me. I don't know how anyone got hold of the poem, but it was the only way I could express how I felt.

I sat down on the floor outside one of the classrooms. My heart sank, as I knew my life was about to change, and lots of people were going to hate me. I hoped that my friends, particularly Cyrus, wouldn't avoid me.

I buried my face in my hands, wanting to wake up. I was hoping it was a bad dream, but it wasn't. I felt someone sit down beside me, and put their arm over my shoulder. I was surprised to see that it was Cyrus.

Cyrus: Jonah...

Me: I'm sorry Cyrus.

Cyrus: Don't be.

Me: But why not?

He gave me a look of empathy and pity. I didn't know whether that was to make me feel better, but at that point, I was just pleased to have my friend with me.

Cyrus: I've wanted you to feel the same way forever.

Me: The same way?

Cyrus: JoJo, I have liked you for so long, but I thought you would hate me.

Me: I know just how you feel Cy-guy.

Cyrus: I can see that.

Me: When I saw what was on the screen, I panicked.

Cyrus: We all saw, and when you ran off it broke my heart.

Me: I'm sorry.

I couldn't believe how vulnerable I sounded. I was supposed to be the strong one, but I felt so weak compared to my friends.

Cyrus: You always tell me to stop being sorry, now it's your turn.

Me: You never had a reason to be sorry, I definitely do.

Cyrus: No you don't, if anything you should be happy.

Me: How does that work?

Cyrus: Because you made me happy.

Me: Really?

Cyrus: Well, I will be really happy, if you'd go out with me.

Me: In that case, we're both happy. Let's go out!

Cyrus: OMG this is great!

Me: It's awesome!

Cyrus dragged me back into the room with the others. There was an awkward silence for a few tense moments, before Cyrus kissed me. It was only a quick peck, but it meant so much. We saw everyone looking and cheering. The girls were shouting from the crowd.

Andi: This is beautiful!

Buffy: You two are adorable!

Cyrus: We are, aren't we?

Me: Well, you certainly are cute!

I don't know who got my poem and put it on the projector, but I'm glad they did. At last, no more secrets and no more hiding. I had a wonderful boyfriend now, and suddenly I felt like the opinions of others didn't matter anymore.

Hope you enjoyed.
