Chapter 32 - Marked

Lexie smiled from the doorway before dimming the lights further and stepping out of Stiles' hospital room, closing the door quietly behind her. She planned on getting herself a few snacks but then the clipboard on the side of the wall caught her eye. The hallway was empty and she was curious, so she picked it up and examined it.

Stiles' name was on the form...his first and last name. Seeing his actual first name made her smile, he never used it for anything and always went by Stiles, but she liked 'Mieczyslaw', it had a nice ring to it. Her eyesight dropped from his personal details and down to the symptoms he had been feeling.

Hallucinations

Impulsivity

Irritable

Acute onset insomnia

Lexie's hand shook slightly as her eyes scanned the words over and over stopping more often on the last one. 'Acute onset insomnia' Without thinking she slipped her phone out of her pocket and tapped onto google as quickly as possibly could. When she typed in the one thing her brain was screaming at her, she checked the symptoms. And they were almost identical.

"Hey," Melissa smiled cheerily as she approached the shaking girl. When she realised something wasn't right, the smile dropped from her face and she spotted the folder in Lexie's hands, "you shouldn't be looking in that."

"I know, I know and I'm sorry it's just...it's just the exact same." Lexie's eyes produced tears as Melissa's brow furrowed and she looked down at her diagnosis of Stiles, her eyes going back and forth between the different words, just like Lexie's did. And then the girl watched as the nurse took a sharp intake of breath.

"Oh my god." Lexie turned the phone around and showed the results to Melissa who scanned it warily.

"Is it possible?" she croaked, her voice breaking in her throat as she put her phone away quickly and tried to hide the fact that tears were about to spill from her eyes. "For teenagers I mean,"

"It certainly is." she watched as the older woman in front of her took a shaky breath. Then her hands went to Lexie's upper arms as she tried to calm her. "But right now I don't want you to worry."

"How can I not?"

"Lexie...this could just be sleep-deprivation. And you know that," she pointed out the girl's genius brain,"in this moment remember to think logically and not emotionally."

Lexie sniffed and wiped at the tears in her eyes. Her only thoughts being about Stiles, "What if it isn't sleep deprivation? I mean, what if he has it? What's gonna happen to him?" she choked on a sob as Melissa's hands rubbed up and down her sleeve, trying to be comforting. It wasn't working.

"Lexie, listen to me. He just needs sleep, okay?"

"But-"

"Trust my judgement on this one, okay?" and for once, the girl listened. She was done being the one with all the answers. "For once just be a kid, and just be by his side. And if god forbid something were to happen to him, just hold his hand. Hold his hand and tell him you love him."

Lexie cried harder and quickly fell into Melissa's embrace. She felt the back of her head being stroked as the woman kept her arms tightly clasped around her. "I'm so scared." she whispered, tears flowing down her face and landing on Melissa's scrubs.

"I know,"

"I'm scared of everything." her thoughts went from Stiles possibly being ill to her sister being attacked last night by one of those mysterious dark figures, and then to Scott and Sabrina and the pressure they were under as Alphas and then to that nagging feeling that something was on its way to bring chaos.

"It's okay. It's okay to be afraid," Melissa muttered, comforting her in a moment of panic and worry. Lexie knew it was nice to have adults and parental figures that were there and looking out for her. Since those days and nights in the root cellar, she seemed to have grown a strong bond with not only Melissa but the Sheriff and even Argent.

They were the only ones in that moment stopping her from going into a fully fledged panic attack. And even though no one could replace her own mom and dad, these people, the guardians...

There was no doubt that they were just as much her parents as her actual parents were. As Lexie's sobs came to a slow, Melissa continued, "but just know you'll survive this."

"And what if I don't?"

This caused Melissa's brows to pinch together as she pulled away and looked down worriedly at the girl. "Sweetheart, what are you talking about?"

"I'm not afraid of these things, or the supernatural, or having to get up after being hit down." the girl took in a shaky breath and closed her eyes, one tear trailing down her cheek as she prepared herself for the next words. "I'm afraid because I know I can't fight forever. And one day...one day I think I'll have to stop fighting altogether."

Melissa hugged the shaking girl once more, holding her tightly and letting her know that it was okay to be afraid and that she was there for her no matter what. Because it wasn't like Lexie could talk to her own mom about this stuff. "Don't." Melissa whispered, determination in her voice as she stroked the girl's back, "Don't stop fighting...ever. You're a strong girl Lexie, and you've been through so much. You're gonna be fine. And Stiles will be fine."

After Melissa wiped the girl's tears away, her pager went off and she had to hurry away, giving her a reassuring squeeze before she left. But Lexie just looked to the door to Stiles' room and sighed worriedly. "I'm not so sure."

Angrily, Sabrina slammed her fist against the wooden door for the umpteenth and groaned loudly. It was long past the end of the school day and she was still in there and the twins were still standing their ground on the other side of the door. "Okay, look is this really necessary? Come on!" Sabrina yelled, kicking her foot against the door once more but getting no response.

Slumping down the surface, she dropped to the ground and sighed as she rested her head back. Might as well make myself comfortable, she thought. But that was before the sound of metal against metal filled her ears and a she could hear it getting closer. Her heart began to beat faster in her chest when she heard the two omegas growl.

Sabrina listened to the grunts from the twins as they smashed against the lockers and against the ground. Even though they weren't a part of her pack, she still felt a need to make sure they were okay, so she went against everything they told her by kicking the door down. It fell to the ground and Sabrina stepped out, her eyes glowing red as she spotted the several dark figures standing there watching her.

The twins had been flung to the end of the hallway where they both looked at her worriedly, panting to themselves. But she was an Alpha, and she could take care of herself. So she roared and then launched forward, sending punches and slashes of claws at these demonic ninjas. And even though she thought she was doing well, it seemed that she was just doing the opposite.

It was like no matter how hard of a punch she threw, it just missed, it didn't amount to anything. They would shift from physical form to literal darkness. Then as Sabrina kicked one of them against a locker, she heard the sharp sound of metal slicing through the air. And even though she had heard it and was warned about the deadly sound, her reaction time was delayed and when she turned around it was too late.

In an instant, one of the blades punctured her. Slicing straight through and impaling her. Eyes watering and her mouth wide with shock, she just stared across at the masked figure in fright, the evil smile it held stuck with her and it felt like she'd never be able to escape them. Her hands shook as she moved them closer and closer to the metal blade and the blood that was now pouring from her stomach.

But before her hands could reach the wound, the sword was pulled out causing her to let out a yelp of pain and fall to her knees. She grasped onto the gaping hole in her stomach, already feeling it beginning to heal but watching as dark smoke emitted and caused her to have an uneasy feeling. Just when she thought they were done with her, two came to her side. And with grunt of pain, they lifted her to her feet.

She shook continuously, her whole body aching as one of the figures approached her, it's masked face inches from hers. Then it grabbed the side of her face and even though she tried to struggle, there was nothing she could do. Sabrina looked into the thing's eyes and then watched as they turned a greenish yellow, it looked like a firefly.

And as the thing stared into her eyes and essentially startled her to death, all she could think about were fireflies. How she remembered Deucalion saying something about fireflies, and then Argent. There was something supernatural about them...something telling her that it all came back to the one thing that has caused her and her friends the most misery in the past.

The Nemeton.

Then before she knew it, it had cut her behind the ear and let her go. She fell to the ground and quickly slid back so she was resting against the lockers, her hand shaking over the blood still slipping from the closing wound. She watched as they stepped away, and in a blink of an eye, they were gone. Vanished.

Sabrina rested against the metal locker behind her, shivering. What she had just seen seemed to have scared the life out of her, it was their eyes, something about the glowing light beneath their mask seemed to have put her in a shocked state. She hadn't even realised the three figures in front of her until one of them roared in her face and her eyes glowed red in response.

Gasping for air, her eyes darted around, landing first on Derek who was gripping onto her shoulders and shaking her out of her state of shock, and then on Ethan and Aiden who were stood either side of him. Sabrina glanced down at her bloody hands and lifted them up to see that her wound was already halfway healed.

"Come on, we have to go." the girl shakily took Derek's hand and let him hoist her up to her feet, followed by a cry of pain as the aching feeling in her abdomen shot across the rest of her body. Resting her head against his shoulder, she burst into tears and gripped onto his shirt.

"I can't...I can't do it." she croaked, holding onto her stomach as her legs shaked. Derek glanced between her and the twins before nodding for them to go. As they hurried off, he gripped her biceps and held her in front of him so the soul in his eyes burned into hers.

"Yes you can."

"No, I can't...I can't," she sighed breathlessly, excruciating pain flowing through her veins. It felt like she wasn't healing, like she was dying but she knew that wasn't what was happening. She knew she'd be okay physically, but mentally, well mentally she was completely fucked.

"Well you don't have a choice." this caused her to look up at him, the tears in her eyes spilling as she spotted his serious expression. But then his face softened and when she caught sight of the flicker in his blue eyes, she tried to pull herself together. "You're an Alpha, you don't get to choose your fights. And right now, those things are going for Scott."

Sabrina's hand dropped from her wound as she thought about her brother having to face those things alone. She had to get to him, and she had to stop them. "Scott..."

When her and Derek arrived at the house, the demons of hell had beat them to it. Sabrina was midway through healing when Derek slid into the room and went straight for the one who had stabbed Agent McCall in the shoulder. When she spotted her father being dragged away by her mom she couldn't help but let out a small gasp.

So as they started fighting, Sabrina slipped away and ran over to her mom, "Mom, mom is he gonna be okay?"

"He needs to get to the hospital,"

"It doesn't look like that's gonna happen anytime soon." Sabrina sighed, glancing down at the bloody wound on her dad's shoulder. Then, out of nowhere, she felt his hand grip hers. Her brows furrowed as she watched the color disappear from his knuckles the tighter he held her hand. She wanted nothing more than to sit there and listen to him apologise for everything, but she came here for a reason. To be an Alpha. So she reluctantly slipped her hand out of his grasp and stood up. "I'm sorry."

Feeling bad, she walked off and didn't look back, but then she realised that she shouldn't have to feel bad. He made life for her a living hell, and it took her a long ass time to just trust someone again. And yeah, he could die, but he's never really been her dad.

Sabrina stood there, watching Derek and Scott take on one of the figures, and then she spotted dark smoke behind Kira. Great, another one, she thought before grabbing Kira's wrist and pulling her away. Just in time because the demon had pulled out its sword and held it out ready to kill. The Alpha growled before pushing the figure back, slamming it against the wall before it disappeared again.

It swiftly reappeared behind her and pushed her down, just in that moment, the twins came smashing through the window, snarling their teeth as they headed for the one closest to them. Sabrina rolled over, the pieces of glass underneath her piercing her skin but causing no pain. once she had gotten to her feet, she noticed that the twins had been able to push one out through the back door.

"Mom, the ash!" Scott shouted as him and Derek struggled to get the other one out the front door. Sabrina growled angrily before lunging forward, her foot raised so that once she came in contact with the dark figure that Scott and Derek were holding, she'd be able to kick it. And that's exactly what she did. When she landed on her feet, she watched it stumble out. "Mom, now! Do it now!"

Melissa appeared out of nowhere and smashed a glass jar to the ground, dark smoke emitting before a line of mountain ash formed around the entire house. Sabrina sighed in relief, looking at the invisible forcefield before her as one of the figures startled her by standing opposite. Thankfully she knew they couldn't get in, so she stood there, staring at it's absurd physicality as she tried to figure out what the hell it was.

***

After waiting for only mere minutes, something caught Sabrina's attention and she reluctantly looked over to the figures to see that they were getting in. "Scott, anything else?" the girl asked her brother worriedly as she spotted him in the middle of the room, phone to his ear, hopefully getting some more answers other than the fact that they were there to kill a dark spirit. What even is a nogitsune? Sabrina thought.

But from the look on his face, the furrowed brows and the clenched jaw, she knew it must've been just more bad news. There wasn't anything they could do to stop them. The girl sighed, looking at the mountain ash collapsing in second by second. "Scott, we're going to have to do something."

"Don't do anything." Sabrina spun around and stared at her brother as if he was okay. Everyone else did the same, the twins, Derek, even Kira, they were just trying to figure out what the hell he meant. Because when did they ever give up fighting?

"Is he serious?"

As Sabrina eyed her brother warily, he gave her a faint nod, and she knew she had to trust him. So she turned to the twins and narrowed her eyes at them, "He said don't do anything." Scott gave her a weak smile before stepping forward and looking at the timid girl behind him. In a swift movement, he extended his hand out, willing her to take it so they could be marked.

"Trust me." and she did, she took his hand. The two stepped forward, just as the forcefield broke and two figures appeared inside the house. Sabrina's urge to push her brother aside and fight these things off to save him, was pretty high, but she trusted his judgement and she knew he always had a plan. So she kept the twins back, their eyes were glowing and teeth were thrashing in their mouth, prepared to fight.

But she stopped them. In some ways, she was being their Alpha. Even though neither of the McCalls had allowed Ethan and Aiden into their pack, it was kind of granted that they were already a part of it since they were willing to fight for the two of them. But it would be a while before the McCall twins started to consider them official members.

Kira and Scott stood side by side, opposite two of the dark figures that apparently, according to Allison, were called 'Oni's'. Sabrina watched nervously as one of the figures grabbed her brother. They did the same thing they had done to her earlier and to everyone else last night. Looking into his eyes before the greenish yellow glowed from behind the mask.

Both of them were being held tightly from the head by the two Oni's, being checked over and then within a second, one Oni cut Scott behind the ear and let him go. The other one did the same with Kira and she fell to the ground too. The four werewolves stood there, wanting to do something, wanting to check if they were okay, but being severely intimidated by the lingering black figures in the doorway.

Then like a puff of smoke, they vanished, and Sabrina rushed to her brother's side. Scott was laying on his side as she turned him around and tried to shake him back to reality. "You're gonna be okay."

"Is that everyone?" he stuttered, thinking back to how many of them had now been marked, or been checked for possession of a dark evil spirit.

Sabrina's brows furrowed worriedly before meeting her brother's eyes. "Lexie."

***

Lexie's eyes fluttered open at the sudden change of lighting. The beams of light on the ceiling flickered, going from darkness to bright white light. She rubbed at her eyes sitting up in the armchair and from the sight of crumpled up sheets, she soon realised the hospital bed was empty, and Stiles was nowhere to be seen.

Quickly getting up from her seat, she hurried to the door, poking her head out and catching on to the fact that the flickering lights weren't just reserved to that room. It was happening all over the hospital, but the question was...why? She decided to be brave and venture out into what seemed like a big mistake, it wasn't a banshee feeling, it was just a general, 'i'm probably gonna die' feeling'.

Step by step, she padded through the empty halls of the hospital, looking for Stiles or Melissa perhaps. As Lexie ventured further and further into the unknown, the feeling she had in the pit of her stomach grew and it spread like wildfire. Infecting not only her veins but her brain and it felt like it was taking control. Now she was worried, and she knew it was some sort of warning. It was like someone was being infected, infected with something that wasn't welcome.

And the feeling was becoming unbearable because it was starting to cause her physical pain. Then, as she stumbled down another hallway, she fell through the double doors to her right. They swung open and she fell to the tiled floor. The pain was now excruciating and she gripped her head to try stop it, but the constant flickering lights above her weren't helping either.

Lexie cried out in pain and clenched her eyes shut, but when she flung them open again, she spotted a figure standing in the centre of the room. "Stiles?" his back was to her so she couldn't see his face but something about him, the way he stood the way he was, just screamed something different. Was he sleepwalking?

As he moved to turn around, the pain grew and grew and she dug her hands onto the floor, trying to get it to stop, but it wouldn't. And then when she saw his face, the look in his eyes, it threw her. The pain stopped almost immediately as she just stared up at him. "Stiles?"

But before the sleep-deprived boy could answer her, darkness seeped into the room and smoke surrounded her. Lexie swallowed the lump in her throat as she watched them form figures, they were almost demon-like and the sight of them made her want to cry. She was kneeling there, shaking, her hands clasped in her lap as she watched one approach her.

Then everything after that was a blur to her, she faintly remembered the sight of a glowing green and it sent her into a shocked state. But she had blacked out, and the last thing that came out of her mouth was Stiles' name.

Not long after, Sabrina and Scott came rushing into the room, the girl going straight for her best friend whilst her brother slowly approached a shaking Stiles. "Hey, Lexie, Lexie can you hear me?" the Martin girl was shook awake, and at the sight of Sabrina, she sighed in relief and fell into a hug.

"Stiles. You okay?" Scott asked warily. In Sabrina's grasp, Lexie looked over her shoulder to see her boyfriend with his back to the three of them. She couldn't remember a thing. She knew she was looking for him, she remembered feeling in pain and then she remembered the figures showing up. Other than that she had no idea what was going on, why he was there, why he seemed different to usual.

They all waited patiently as he turned around and nodded, "Yeah fine. What's been going on?" Lexie and Sabrina shared a worried glance as Scott approached his best friend. As the four headed out of the room, a still in shock Lexie spotted something on the ground no one else did. The other three were out of the room as she held onto the door, eyeing the dead creature carefully as she remembered the yellowish green glow behind the mask.

"A firefly."

Hey, I'm so sorry about these chapters they are awful I know but it's just been hard to get into the writing mindset recently. I have SO many exams at the minute and it makes me wanna rip my hair out...

So if updates get less frequent I'm sorry, but I finish school in like less than 6 weeks so I'm gonna have so much more free time to write.

Plus I know these are a lot shorter than usual but that's because I've literally got nothing to write about. There's not much action in these scenes and it ends up being a whole load of dialogue that really isn't necessary.

Anyway let me know what you think, and don't forget to vote and comment
