Chapter 3 A pleasant evening

After the events of tonight, (Y/n) arrived home in a rush, wanting to end this suspenseful and surprising night. Arriving home, opening the doors, young (Y/n) silently without a single word walks to his bed, falling flat onto it's soft surface, letting his face plant straight onto the pillow, closing his eyes and recounting everything that just transpired.

(Y/n): "Emily... her name was Emily..."

Muffling into the pillow, (Y/n) tries his best to fade into slumber.

It was a quiet night, one that would remain a secret to himself only, and for once, he didn't think at all about Catherine.

Meanwhile in the forest, Emily couldn't hold back her excitement, she gracefully swayed around the forest, dancing flawlessly to it's sounds of nature. Her mood was blissful and her undead heart seemed to have begun beating. Lingering on his words of meeting her again tomorrow, she wanted to find something to fill the time until that rendezvous came to be, so she would sing to herself, plan out conversations to bring up and such.

Emily: "Oh (Y/n)... my dear (Y/n)..."

For the first time since her demise, Emily felt alive.

The night had passed and (Y/n) woke up in a pool of sweat, something that had been happening often, perhaps due to his complications with Catherine lately, though he completely understood the reason now.

(Y/n): "Sweat again... must have been because of... her..."

Her referring to young undead Emily, as his encounter and conversation with her did indeed quite cause the stirrup within (Y/n)'s mind and heart.

Raising up from the bed with a struggle, not wanting to get up, he did find some excitement in this day. Despite his first impressions of Emily, he did find her story tragic and her personality to be positively adorable. He did look forward to meeting up with her once again, though unfortunately it would have to wait until afternoon arrives for he had to make his way to work.

After getting dressed, wearing his dress shirt and dark gray slacks, he would exit his home and journey to the bank where he was a teller. In his daily commute, he would usually take the road where Catherine would work but to avoid her, he would take a different route, one that would avoid Catherine at all costs.

It was a normal day, like any other, though it seemed time was ticking ever so slowly for (Y/n), probably because his eagerness to clock out and finish his job was making it seem time was moving slower for him. After the time came for him to leave, he did so as quickly as possible, but the moment he was exiting his bank, he heard a familiar voice that made his stomach churn.

Catherine: "Hey! (Y/n)!"

(Y/n): "Hello Catherine..."

Catherine would let out a small cough, before fixing her coat and tilting her head up at (Y/n).

Catherine: "Where were you all of last night? And this morning I didn't see you heading to work. I was worried."

(Y/n): "Catherine, I... I was busy last night... and I just decided to take a different route to work this time, don't know why... just wanted a change of scenery."

Catherine: "Well it's good to see you're alright though, anyway, since you're off, I'm finally free tonight! Let's go and see one of those theatre acts, they seemed really intriguing."

(Y/n): "You see... I cannot tonight Catherine, nor any other night..."

Catherine: "W-what do you mean?"

Taking a deep breath, (Y/n) prepared himself, as he did his best to compose himself proper for the next few paragraphs that were about to come out of his mouth. Catherine watched with a puzzled look as (Y/n) donned a serious expression, and deep down, she knew what he was going to say.

The clock struck six at night, the evening sun was beginning to settle down, as night was drawing near. In the forgotten forest, Emily sat upon a trunk, her elbows resting on her knees as her head rests in her hands, bored out of her mind and a bit scared that (Y/n) left her and never looked back. Truthfully she had this worry and doubt the moment he left for home last night, yet she hoped that this wasn't the case. She already was left for dead and all alone before, and it was a feeling like no other. Some can say she even died of being left all alone rather than being killed.

She desperately tried to sweep away these doubts in her mind, for she had a genuine feeling of trust towards (Y/n), and she would stay here and be determined that he would come like he said he would.

The forest was silent, the soft wind being the only thing heard, though every time a branch would fall from a tree, Emily would quickly turn her head towards the source, hoping it was (Y/n) stepping forward, only to look on disappointedly and see it wasn't him.

Emily: "Oh where are you (Y/n)..."

Her question would be answered when a silhouette in the distance became visible, where Emily would squint her eyes to get a better view.

It was indeed (Y/n), walking with a bag in his hands.

Smiling, Emily quickly got up from her trunk and rushed forward into (Y/n), wrapping her slender arms around him, quickly embracing him in a hug, making (Y/n) smile at this notion and enjoy the small affection she showed.

Emily: "I'm so happy you're here! I was worried you wouldn't show."

(Y/n): "Apologies for the delay, I had to talk with someone, and it was a pretty long exchange."

Emily: "Oh? Who would that be (Y/n)?"

Emily took (Y/n)'s hand, and guided them both to a fallen tree and both rested and sat on top of it, as (Y/n) let out a small cough, clearing his throat, before looking over at Emily and giving her a look of sadness, his eyes glistening.

Emily: "What's wrong?"

(Y/n): "Do you remember that woman I told you about last night... the one that broke my heart?"

Emily: "I do..."

(Y/n): "Well, I would have been here sooner, but she found me at my work and... well I confronted her about her affair, and it was not a pretty exchange."

A little shocked by this revelation, Emily glances her eyes down at her hand, where the wedding ring rested upon her finger, and thought to herself about how the whole ordeal went down.

(Y/n): "I told her how I found her, in the park, and how I had planned on proposing, and she... well she didn't like what she heard, she denied it but after a bit of pressure, she admitted her infidelity, so she begun crying."

Emily: "Oh (Y/n)... it must have been awful to have to go through that..."

(Y/n): "It was sad, and I too felt sad, for her mostly, the way she spoke and reacted to it all was way different than I ever seen her. Truly it wasn't an easy topic, my stomach felt so tight and my heart felt so disturbed."

Emily: "So what happened next?"

(Y/n): "I told her that what we had was not meant to be since she cheated on me... and oddly, she didn't want me to go... it was like, I was her only one..."

Emily: "But doesn't she have that other man, the one she was cheating with?"

(Y/n): "That's what I thought, and I brought it up even, but when I did... she cried even louder..."

Emily: "(Y/n)... you are a brave man, to go through that must have been difficult and hard, especially having to hear her cry like that, but I can assure you, you're better off without her."

Resting her head against his shoulder, Emily closes her eyes and enjoys his touch.

Emily: "If I was her, I would never even think of cheating on you."

Having a dead corpse confide in him, (Y/n) felt relaxed, at ease having heard her say that. This time, there was no reluctance or hesitation at all, so he rested his head upon hers as it rested on his shoulder.

(Y/n): "Thank you Emily..."

They shared this moment of affection and comfort with one another for a few minutes, and it was exactly what (Y/n) needed after having to break up with his girlfriend for near on two years. After that was all said and done, Emily removes her head off of (Y/n)'s shoulder and happily claps her hands together, excited for what was to happen next.

Emily: "Okay! I was wondering, let us get to know each other more! Like you said! It's best that we do!"

(Y/n): "S-sure, I'm up for that. I do have quite a lot of questions about you Miss Emily."

Emily: "I'm always down to talk!"

(Y/n): "Emily, I want to get it out of the way, exactly... how did you die?"

A little taken aback by the sudden question, she did have the concern that this would be brought up. She was a little vague when discussing it last night so in order for (Y/n) to know her more and better, the story of her demise had to be told.

Emily: "I was to be wed by a man, but my family didn't approve, so we came to this forest to run away and be wed... but as I waited here, he came from the shadows and murdered me... with a knife, I died moments after from blood loss."

A sense of unnerving tension was felt between the two, as silence befell them both, (Y/n) felt absolutely disgusted and appalled by her murder.

(Y/n): "My lord... such a bad business, and by your own husband to be."

Emily: "I still wonder countless nights to myself why he did it, but a dead girl can only do so much you know?"

(Y/n): "Do you remember his name?"

Emily: "B-Barkis... Barkis Bittern."

(Y/n): "I know the name, he died of tuberculosis some months ago."

Emily: "Yeah, he got his judgement the moment he arrived in the land of the dead."

(Y/n): "The land of the dead? It exists?"

Emily: "Oh yes, I know it sounds terrifying but it's actually quite the place! Like it's own little world, with all sorts of people, and they're all so friendly to me."

(Y/n): "The land of the dead... so there is no Heaven or Hell?"

Emily: "Well... there is, so I've heard of course! The land of the dead according to us is a placeholder until we are transported to Heaven or Hell, depending on how we were when we were alive. We only go once our business in the land of the living has been settled."

(Y/n): "Settled? What's preventing you from heading into Heaven?"

Emily: "Truthfully I do not know myself, I would have imagined when Barkis died, that my soul would have been put to rest, since he was my murderer and all you know?"

(Y/n): "That is quite puzzling, maybe it has to do with something else."

Emily: "Perhaps, but I really wish I knew what..."

(Y/n): "Maybe it's because you never got to marry."

Young Emily froze a bit at this suggestion, perhaps it was due to her never being wedded by someone, though if that was the case she would have married anyone just to be transported into Heaven, yet she felt like that was too easy to be.

Emily: "Or maybe it is because I never got to truly love..."

Hanging her head down as she looks at the dirt, she frowns in sadness at her guess of why she is still in the land of the dead and not Heaven. (Y/n) saw her motions and knew that she was in pain, emotional pain. A pain he felt all too well.

(Y/n): "Sometimes I feel that way too, especially as of later ever since... you know..."

Emily: "People can be so cruel can't they?"

(Y/n): "No doubt, but at least I know you aren't like them."

Reaching over, young (Y/n) planted his hand upon Emily's, where she had on her ring. If it was possible, Emily would surely have blushed at this gesture. It made her feel like growing goosebumps at his touch, a touch she didn't want to end. Even though (Y/n) didn't accept her marriage immediately, the way he has changed and been talking to her lately has given her hope that maybe this is a step in the right direction. A direction that leads to a happy romance with (Y/n).

With that little exchange, Emily and (Y/n) continued on with their interests, with (Y/n) talking about how he loves to (favorite things to do) and surprisingly Emily shares many interests with him, making them connect more and more. Telling each other stories of their youth and their adventures, they were having a great time conversing. So great in fact that time like before was lost track of, and before they knew it, the time was nearing midnight. Like before, (Y/n) needed to head home, but secretly, he didn't want to leave Emily again.

(Y/n): "It's drawing near that time again Emily."

Emily: "I see... but same time tomorrow?"

(Y/n): "Of course, I wouldn't miss it for the world."

A smile formed on Emily's pale lips, making (Y/n) smile in return.

Letting out a few coughs, clearing his throat and adjusting his slacks, (Y/n) got up and bid his farewells to Emily, shaking her skeletal hand and went on back home.

Emily watched like before, seeing (Y/n) become smaller and smaller as he went further away, her mind fluttering and her undead heart feeling like it was racing again. Tonight was perfect to her, she got to know young (Y/n) so much more and she seemed content that he was starting to like her. This dream of hers that (Y/n) would fall in love and marry her seemed to becoming true. She longed for the feeling of true passion, and so far, (Y/n) was looking like her best bet at it. Staring down at her ring, adoring the blue glimmer, Emily wanted to sing because of how happy she was.

Instead, Emily went and sat by the pond she loved to be at, and begun dancing gracefully like she used to do. A symbolism of her bliss, and her hope becoming a reality.

Emily: "Until tomorrow dear (Y/n)"

She spoke in a gentle and rhythmic voice, fluttering every so flawlessly with her feet, before continuing singing a song she loved as a child on the lonely pond.

Emily: "Until tomorrow <3"
