Chapter 8 Learning to say see you soon

After their delightful date at the bakery shop, Emily quickly knew where she wanted to visit next. Taking hold of (Y/n)'s arm, she lead him down a path where it lead to a more rural area of the town. After a few steps though, (Y/n) unfortunately had another episode of his violent coughing outburst, making Emily stop yanking on his arm and use the hoodie she was wearing to cover (Y/n)'s mouth.

(Y/n): "T-thank you Emily..."

Emily: "It never gets easier seeing you like this..."

(Y/n): "I'll be okay... just got to... regain my breath..."

There, for a moment, they stood.

Letting (Y/n) rest for a bit so that he could regain his energy he lost coughing. His breath raspy, his heart slowly beating, his eyes even watering a bit, he looked awful. Emily felt powerless in this situation, unsure of how to help, or what to do. She hasn't a clue about the terrible illness that has taken over young (Y/n), all she could do is simply stay by his side.

After a minute of heaving panting and slow breathing, (Y/n) cleared his throat, which felt painful, and stated that he was now fit to continue.

(Y/n): "Okay... let's go..."

Emily: "(Y/n)... maybe we should just rest for the day..."

(Y/n): "No, I want to spend this day with you, going out to where ever you please."

Emily: "But..."

(Y/n): "No buts, I promise, I'll be okay."

She didn't buy his claim, in fact she knew he was lying, she could tell by his pale skin and difficulty standing that he was suffering, but young undead Emily felt perhaps that letting her visit these places on their little date is what is keeping (Y/n) going. Seeing her happy is what is letting him even still breath at this point.

Emily: "Okay! I want to visit an old farm my father used to buy horses from. I loved all the animals there, I would like to see some if they're still around."

(Y/n): "A farm? I used to work on one when I was younger, so sure let's go."

Emily took her time and gently wrapped her arm around (Y/n)'s, guiding the way down the stone path leading to a valley. It was quite the distance, but would only take near on half an hour. During that half hour, Emily decided to try and take away (Y/n)'s worry of his disease and ask about his past.

Emily: "You were a farmer?"

(Y/n): "Hehe... I was once upon a time, didn't last too long though."

Emily: "How do you mean?"

(Y/n): "Well I was young, around thirteen. A kid. I mean I guess I still am, only nineteen now. But it was mainly my father's idea. Said that it was best we all pitched in if we were going to move to this town."

Emily: "You never really talk about your father."

(Y/n): "No... I like to avoid the memory."

Emily: "Oh... I didn't know he..."

(Y/n): "Yeah, a couple years back. But anyway, so there I am, a newly turned teenager, walking onto the farm asking for a job as a hand..."

During their walk, (Y/n) would discuss to dear Emily his past as a farm hand, where he would perform tasks that ranged from cleaning up stalls to feeding the horses. Emily was absorbed in his past, always eager to learn more about (Y/n), though they were destined to spend their afterlives together, she would never tire of learning new things about him.

Emily: "Wow, I don't think I could ever do that kind of stuff, I'd get dirty very easily."

(Y/n): "Yeah, haha... it was a messy and smelly job."

Emily: "Then I suppose you got enough to move?"

(Y/n): "Not quite. My father actually struck it rich. While I was working on the farm, he would go hunting for gold."

Emily: "Oh? He was a miner?"

(Y/n): "A prospector yeah, he luckily found a large deposit of gold. I remember when he arrived at the farm that one day, a carriage full of our stuff, and him wearing a beautiful new red suit. He told me our troubles were over and that it was time to move."

Emily: "How fantastic! If... you don't mind me asking... what happened to him?"

(Y/n): "He... after we moved to town..."

Stopping on his words, (Y/n) had no clue if he should continue his father's tale and fate. It pained (Y/n) thinking about it, which was plainly visible to Emily. Yet again she opened old wounds within (Y/n), she quickly apologized for her prying.

Emily: "No... you don't have to answer if it-"

(Y/n): "He and my mother were killed, robbed in an alleyway. Some thief thought they had their riches in their pockets. He killed them for nothing but a pearl necklace and a pocket watch..."

Emily: "Oh (Y/n)..."

(Y/n): "I never really talked about my parents with you Emily... you deserve to know. And after I heard they died... I was all alone with all the money. I didn't really know what to do with it. It was way too much for me to have, so I guess I just... gave a lot of it away, I mean of course I saved some for my well being... but all that money just brings haunting memories I guess."

Emily: "I see..."

They didn't even notice but they stopped walking.

Their journey to this old farm Emily used to visit was halted after this certain revelation about (Y/n)'s past, for it truly brought both of them a feeling of sorrow. Emily wasn't sure how to deal with the grief (Y/n) was experiencing, but she did share a similarity.

Emily: "I was killed for my money too (Y/n)..."

(Y/n) stood there with a subtly shocked expression, he knew Emily died by a man named Barkis, but for it to be over money.

Emily: "This world is cruel, unforgiving, makes me sad to see people become... monsters... yet within this world of dread and heartbreak, there is beauty. Like you."

(Y/n): "Hehe... and you Emily..."

(Y/n) reaches forward and takes Emily by the hands, the blue ring she adorned shimmering it's pretty blue glow. A sight Emily could never grow tired of. Before more could be said, little did they know that when they halted their walking, that they actually were at their destination.

Calamity Farm.

Emily smiled under her hood, her memories of this place filling her mind, a trip of nostalgia overwhelming her. She couldn't stop her smiling because she loved animals and this farm was host to many of her favorite ones.

Emily: "This is it! (Y/n) this is the place!"

(Y/n): "Calamity Farm, looks gorgeous, even in the winter."

Emily: "Oh this is like a dream. Quick! Let's go inside!"

(Y/n): "Emily wait..."

His call out was useless, Emily was hyper about this place, her excitement drove her. Smiling as she rushed over to the main area, (Y/n) couldn't help but enjoy her motivation and gleeful personality, something he found intoxicating. Following behind her, he got to see more of this Calamity Farm, coated in white from the snow, there weren't that many animals in sight. The winter was brash and colder than usual, which (Y/n) was feeling it fully considering all he had was a long sleeve shirt and his jacket was given to Emily to conceal her identity. Shivering in his walk, he was certain that the animals must have been housed within the barn, to keep warm.

Emily: "(Y/n)! Over here! Let's go inside!"

Calling out to (Y/n), Emily stood in front of the barn, eager to open it up and see all the animals she used to love interacting with. Reaching her, (Y/n) had to remind Emily to keep her voice down and that they couldn't just barge inside the barn without consent from the owner. Then from around the corner, a young man wearing a long flock coat and a large hat approached them both, identifying himself as the main farm hand around here. With a bit of persuasion and telling him that his partner, Emily, used to visit on trips here, the farm hand allowed them to enter but would check in on them regularly. Prancing giddily, Emily wasted no time in opening the barn doors, to see all the farm animals in their stalls, glancing their view towards the doors opening.

Horses, chickens, pigs, even a dog that was resting near the end all looked at both (Y/n) and Emily, wondering who these two were.

Emily: "Oh look at them all! Let's go and say hi to them."

(Y/n): "Sure."

Emily took hold of (Y/n)'s hand, her skeletal touch grasping it tightly as she dragged him towards the horses first.

The place was smelly, but it was expected, though Emily was the lucky one since with her death, her sense of smell was also no longer available. The horses all were standing, only three were present. One was a beautiful silk brown color, their mane black and soft as Emily patted it gently, trickling her fingers along it's coat. The horse neighed and leaned forward, enjoying her company. It was like the horse was engulfed in a spell that obeyed Emily, wanting more of her, not wanting her to stop.

(Y/n): "You have a way with animals."

Emily: "You just have to not be afraid and show that you mean no harm, and they will act the same."

Petting the horses, Emily giggled at each one that neighed at her, even speaking back to them like she was conversing with them. Leaning against a support beam, (Y/n) watched in joy as he looked on at Emily having fun.

Suddenly he felt something graze against his legs, and so looking down he saw the dog that was resting near the end of the barn. It was a bluetick coonhound, looked a bit old but still moved around like it was young. As Emily played with the horses, having the time of her afterlife, (Y/n) knelt down and petted the dog. Having a soft spot for domesticated animals, he felt at home when petting this dog, then suddenly he heard a voice call out from the entrance.

Farm Hand: "His name's Gruff."

The Farm hand was observing both Emily and (Y/n) from the entrance, smiling at how well they've managed to get the animals to like them.

Farm Hand: "Never seen him be this friendly to strangers. Always barking up a storm to young folks, especially like you. I always seem him more content and calm around old or dying people."

(Y/n): "Yeah well... I guess I just look friendly perhaps... haha."

Farm Hand: "Could be, so you said you visited her when you were younger ma'am?"

Emily froze when she heard the question direct towards her, unsure of what she should do, but quickly (Y/n) stood up and answered for her.

(Y/n): "Yes sir, she came here a couple of times when she was younger, trips back and forth you know?"

Farm Hand: "Mmmm, I see... well you guys seem like decent folk, have you seen our pigs yet?"

(Y/n): "No sir."

Emily found herself walking back next to (Y/n), staying by his side, slipping her hand down secretly and holding onto it as he spoke to the farm hand.

Farm Hand: "Well they're a good ol bunch, we got a lot of new ones, but we do have a veteran here, maybe you might recognize her if you go back that far when you used to visit."

Opening the stall that lead to the pig pen, the pigs all moved aside to make way for the opening gate. Entering in, the farm hand brushed his way around the many pigs that resided within the pen, with (Y/n) and Emily following closely by. It smelled worse in here, which made sense since it was a pig pen, though like before, Emily was not affected by the disgusting aroma.

Farm Hand: "This here is Charlotte."

Reaching his way to the end of the pig pen, he stopped at a large female pig resting on the dirt, spotted in design and clearly old in age from the wrinkles that were present. When Emily saw Charlotte, she gasped quietly, and whispered under her breath.

Emily: "Charlotte?..."

Farm Hand: "She has been here for near on twenty years, nearing her time unfortunately. Thankfully the other pigs stay clear, she garnered their respect I suppose, either that or they know she's passing."

As the farm hand was explaining, Emily would let go of (Y/n)'s hand and step forward towards Charlotte the pig, kneeling down in front of her. Placing her hand that wasn't skeletal on her belly, she rubbed her softly making Charlotte turn her eyes slowly towards Emily.

Emily: "Hey girl..."

Emily spoke quietly to Charlotte, and when Charlotte heard Emily speak, her eyes opened wide and with a struggle, she wiggled and stood up quickly, oinking and rubbing up against Emily. Accepting her affection, Emily would begin giggling and rubbing Charlotte all over, happy that she was reunited with an old friend.

Farm Hand: "Well I'll be, you do know Charlotte?"

With a turn, Emily was about to speak but remembered to keep down, so instead she nodded her head, giving the farm hand a reaffirming smile that she did indeed know Charlotte.

Farm Hand: "Good on ya, well I won't disturb your reunion any more, if you folk need anything, just holler or find me."

(Y/n): "Thank you sir."

As the farm hand left the barn once more, (Y/n) turned back to Emily to smile down at her as she petted and hugged Charlotte. It was quite the sight, seeing this old female pig who seemed immobile hop up so quickly when seeing Emily.

(Y/n): "I assume you used to play with her?"

Emily: "I did! She was so little when I came here though, like a baby! Now look at her! All grown up and nearing her life. Oh how I missed you Charlotte!"

Charlotte simply responded with constant happy oinks.

Emily: "Don't worry girl, you'll be seeing me a lot when you go..."

Rubbing her belly, Emily smiled brightly and kept Charlotte company for a bit, enjoying their reunion, talking to her like she did with the horses. (Y/n) leaned against the gate, like before, just watching Emily have her fun. He loved seeing her happy, and that's what made him happy.

After a bit of catching up, Charlotte used up all her remaining energy and found herself collapsing on the dirt, panting heavily. Old Charlotte was passing over.

Emily: "C-Charlotte??"

Holding on tightly to the pig, Emily was scared for her life, wondering why it had to be now this was happening. (Y/n) saw this whole ordeal playing out and quickly ran to get the farm hand. With Emily all alone with Charlotte and the other pigs, she held onto Charlotte's large frame, comforting her as she gave her final breaths.

Emily: "Shhh... shh... Charlotte, don't struggle, just... just let go... I'm going to see you soon, I promise."

As a gesture of hope, and considering that she knew Charlotte when she was just a piglet, she removed her hood so that Charlotte could see her fully one last time before dying. A tear escaped Charlotte's eye, feeling safe in Emily's arms, but also at ease that she was to pass in such a good friend's grace. Giving in to the age, she let out one final oink before slowly closing her eyes for good.

Charlotte died in Emily's arms.

Setting her down softly, Emily wanted to cry after seeing an old friend pass in her arms, a feeling she would have to relive once her love, (Y/n), passes. Hearing some footsteps rush in, she quickly pulls up her hoodie again, hiding her face as she just kneels there in front of Charlotte's peaceful dead body.

Farm Hand: "Oh Charlotte... you old girl..."

The farm hand would slowly make his way to Charlotte's corpse, placing his hand upon her stiff body, giving her one final pet before having to bury her proper. Emily stood up slowly, hiding behind (Y/n), not wanting to linger here any longer after seeing a pig she used to adore seeing die in her arms.

Farm Hand: "I knew her time was near, not that near... I thank you all for letting her have a moment of happiness before she passed, she been quiet for months until now. I don't mean to be rude but it's best you folk go head and be on your way, got to bury this veteran here."

(Y/n): "Of course sir, thank you for letting us in."

(Y/n) was about to turn to Emily but was shocked to see her run off on her own, right out of the barn. She was clearly upset and distraught about all of this, (Y/n) knew it couldn't have been easy to see someone she used to play with go in her arms. He needed to find her and let her know it will be okay.

Stepping out of the barn, the snow began to reappear, the snowflakes making their presence known. Winter fog began to encapsulate the area, making the view distance harder to see through, but luckily, with squinting eyes, (Y/n) managed to find Emily against a tree.

(Y/n): "Emily, are you alright?"

Emily: "Oh.... (Y/n).... she passed right in my arms, I... oh it was awful."

(Y/n): "I know... it's, it isn't nice."

Emily: "I barely had any time to catch up with her..."

(Y/n): "Emily it's alright, like you said yourself, you'll see her when..."

Another episode of coughing due to his tuberculosis was happening, making (Y/n) violently clench his chest.

(Y/n): "You'll... you'll see her when she passes-"

Unable to finish his sentence, (Y/n) found himself near on collapsing against the tree Emily was resting near. Emily wanted to shout and cry, not wanting to have to go through what she just went through again, she rushed towards (Y/n), wrapping herself around him, shaking her head in his chest, begging him to not die in her arms.

Emily: "Please! (Y/n), not yet, please not yet! Don't make me go through this again!"

With a final painful cough, his episode ended and he held on tightly to Emily, as he cleared his throat, having him catch his breath.

(Y/n): "I'm... I'm okay..."

Emily: "(Y/n)...."

(Y/n): "I'm okay... but... Emily, I'm going to die... we already discussed this... I know you seeing and holding that pig as she died was heartbreaking, but that is life, like you said, this world is cruel... but with my death, the beauty in it is that... I'll be with you when I pass... same as Charlotte..."

Emily: "I... you're right... it's just... seeing them suffer and give their final breath was terrifying... that never happened to me before, watching someone die... and to think I have to go through it again with you..."

(Y/n): "Emily... trust me, I don't want to put you through that, and I truly don't want to die... but it is what it is, there's no fighting it. Just accepting it. Besides, I won't be heading anyway when I do die... I'll simply just rise right up from the dead like you did, remember?"

The little joke did lift Emily's spirits a bit, and he was right, (Y/n) was to pass but even so, he would still be with Emily after his fate is sealed. Charlotte is in the same boat, right now Charlotte is dead, which means Emily can see her any time now. Yet the fear still engulfed her thoughts that she was unable to do anything for (Y/n).

Emily: "I know hehe.... but... it just pains me to see the ones I care for be in pain..."

Hanging her head low, Emily was somber in her expression, she wanted to cry but was unable to because of her mortal status. (Y/n) saw how much she was hurting, having to see others hurt, but despite his tuberculosis killing him with every passing second, one thing Emily said was wrong.

(Y/n): "Emily, when I'm with you, I feel no pain. Sure the tuberculosis comes and goes and hurts my throat, my lungs, everything, but the feeling I have when I'm near you masks that pain. You're my medicine Emily, my cure."

Smiling under her hood, Emily turned to face (Y/n), giving him a look of happiness. (Y/n) knew exactly how to lighten Emily's mood whenever she was feeling depressed, perhaps that is why they clicked so well so fast.

Emily: "Oh (Y/n), I love you."

Stepping forward and wrapping her arms around (Y/n)'s neck, she planted a kiss upon his cold lips. The winter snowflakes falling on top of them, maneuvering their way through the tree's branches and landing on top of them both. This date of nostalgia may have turned tragic, but it was the silver lining at the end that made her realize that death isn't necessarily the end, especially when it was to come with (Y/n), because when he passes, he will not be going anywhere any time soon. After their kiss concluded, it was time to leave Calamity Farm and head back into town to continue their date further, and after all of this finishes, she can't wait to see Charlotte once again.
