~sillage~

~ sillage - the scent that lingers in the air, the trail left in the water, the impression made in space after something or someone has been gone, the trace of someone's perfume.

My heart raced furiously in the confinements of my ribcage as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The fleeting image of a ballerina crossed my mind as the sunlit curtains and halls enveloped her delicate silhouette lovingly. I almost felt her rippling the air around me while she swirled en pointe and sprinkled glitter on my wandering soul in the cloud of my imagination. I let my fantasy calm me down when my heart was acting the wildest it had ever done in my whole life.

Opening my eyes, I blinked nervously in the dark and felt myself lost in a huge crowd of chattering people. Dabbing a tissue on my forehead, I waited for the moment of solace desperately. Never in my life had I seen such a large gathering and all the rolling lights around me made me feel really alone and tensed. I looked towards the object of fascination in front of me and sighed heavily. The stage was lit with magic but I missed her presence more than anything. Yes, it was true, I had missed the interview for her.

After agonising moments of something what felt like eternity, the dancers twirled off the floor and gradually, the whole stage lit in soft glowing lights.

A loud gasp filled the air as the curtains drew back to reveal the fragile silhouette of a ballerina amidst the spotlight. My heart fluttered like a caged bird as I spotted her innocent face among the lights. She was Faye Pearl.

Shyly, she stepped forward into the air resonating with a melodious symphony and spread her arms majestically in the air. Giving in to the music, she let herself drown into heights of ecstacy and sprinkled galaxies all around. My breath hitched as she leaped into the air and pulled triple pirouettes with astounding ease on the crystal floor that reflected her delicate body. Spreading colourful insanities all over the crowd, she displayed a dazzling passé and then bent down wonderfully in a perfect dégagé. I struggled to control my racing heartbeat as she crossed her legs on the floor and bowed down to the audience. Faye Pearl, the ballerina of my dreams, had stolen all the glory tonight.

A huge round of applause ringed in the air as she swayed lightly and disappeared behind the rolling curtains. I got up from my seat and hurriedly made my way through the rows of people who were stuck in awe at her amazing performance. Escaping the confinements of the auditorium, I ran wildly to the back of the stage in her search. A group of ballet dancers was whispering excitedly behind the stage and far off in a corner, she stood silently with her head bowed down.

I walked over to her shyly and hesitated a few steps away from her when she looked above and her gaze met mine as her large innocent eyes searched for words engraved in my soul. It was the first time that she was so close to me and my head was whirling with her heavenly fragrance. Stuttering a few times, I shuffled my feet and looked down before approaching her. As I stood in front of her, I looked right in her eyes and, without even an introduction, said the three words that I'd withheld in my heart for so long.

Expecting her to smile and tuck a loose strand of her hair behind her ear like every 7:00 am, I gulped nervously but my expectations were met with complete shock when a tear escaped the world of her deep eyes and rolled down her cheek. Instantly, I placed my hands on her shoulders and inquired the cause of her distress but she didn't speak a word. Instead, she uncurled her fingers and revealed a folded piece of wrinkled paper. The moment I picked it up, she took off running down the corridor and left me standing in unending agony.

Faye Pearl had rejected me after a whole year of yearning.

Author's Note

This is the longest chapter but I did it on purpose. It was meant to be described like this. The rest of the chapters will be the usual short ones. :)

Alan Blue got his heart broken the first time he said 'I Love You' to someone. Comment if you went through the same thing. :(
