Final exams: The significance in others

Shimura POV

They have been talking for 15 minutes straight. They haven't even noticed us-because their back are turned against us. Me and Keigo look at them, then each other, just to see what exactly is going on and if the other had a clue.

She often laughs at what he's saying, and he whispers stuff to the her. Could they be... no, I can't imagine it! But it makes so much sense!!

I mean, sure the two were kidnapped and had plenty of time to bond over stuff but maybe it was more than that. Maybe, just maybe, they're together! They'll probably be an amazing pairing too, since their personalities fit well together. I mean, look at how much Mirko is laughing! And I bet Dabi's having fun too. Oh my god, I'm so happy she has a perfect boyfriend! Wait, what if this dating thing was happening way before the kidnapping!? Like, sure McDonald's isn't fancy, but they went there together, ALONE.

I turn to Keigo ecstatically, who is chowing down on his curry and watching them and I share "What if I told you... I think that they're dating".

He nearly chokes "Dating!? Since when!?".

"No, no!" I quickly calm him "I think they are. I mean look at them". We both instinctively look to them again and back to the other.

"It's a possibility..." he mutters "but if they are, why didn't they tell us?".

"Dabi is pretty secretive. And Mirko seems like she wouldn't announce a new relationship just yet" I suggest, thinking back to the asshole boyfriend she had but Keigo didn't know fully about.

He nods and hums "This'll be great!" with a wicked smirk coming across his face. I chuckle at it.

Suddenly, the two spot us and stand up to walk to us. When they arrive, Mirko asks "Why didn't you guys come over to our table, that was literally in your vision".

Hawks 'realises' "Oh, we're sorry. You two looked like you were having a lot of fun. Just you two". I grin and they look at us confused and weirded out. Well, they should have their moments elsewhere.

They sit down and Dabi asks "Does anyone actually know what the End of Term exams are gonna be?". Oh, true. Lord knows what UA'll try.

Keigo groans "Don't remind me... I'm already burnt from the writing work".

"But we haven't done it yet, though?" I ask confused.

"Exactly" he sighs. Oh.

Mirko then swallows her food and says "My grades are already good enough, plus, yours aren't bad either".

"Yeah, but y'know how I get with tests around the corner. It's like a seasonal depression" he mumbles to us all. I can understand that. My grades are ranked the top four in the class but tests can vary much drag you down.

I nod "I hope we all manage to get into the training camp". We all nod in agreement.

Daiki POV

It was a day after the writing exam, aka the Practical. Oh, boy, I can't fail this. AT ALL. Kanji and I both made a pact to go in this together and I can't let him down. As we wait I stretch my hand and bend it, like a nice calming slime. Can the teachers just get here!

I just can't let him down, at all. He really wants both of us to be together in the camp so we could have the fun together. If I don't get in, then he'll be upset, and I can't let that happen.

Finally, our principal, Nezu, comes out from a building and stands in front of us. What are they planning, exactly? Surely some robots, right? A drop of sweat forms on my palms as I stretch it out more.

He announces with a possible sadistic smile on his face "Hello, 1a, great to see you all again! In this Exam, you'll be paired into duos and fighting our latest, high-tech, artificial intelligence robots, which'll have powers of their own. The goals are to either escape or to destroy/disable your enemies".

Oh, thank god... I thought we might be actually fighting heroes or other strong quirk people. I stretch my finger in relief. But the destroy thing makes it seem really hardcore...

"The reason why we're taking a bit more of an advance with these exams is because we want you all to experience near-to-real-life situations as a hero." He carries on. This must be because of the whole kidnapping thing that happened.

He then starts calling out the duos:

"Orange Orb and Mirko against the Robot Shokku". The two give each other a high five, happily. They'll definitely pass.

"Wairdoea and Hahen against the Robot Rēzā". Wairdoea gives her a fist bump but Hahen indirectly rejects it because she didn't notice it.

"Skinspike and Ikigai against Robot Naifu". Kanna wraps her arm around Shimura in a friendly way, surprising him at first, but he smiles back.

"Honeybee and Kuma against Robot Wakideru". They both smile at each other brightly from across the crowd. Well, I guess I'm not with him...

"Onion Namada and Hawks against Robot Ken Jetto". The two wave to each other from the front to the back.

"Dabi and Hayai Osoi against Robot Kōri". The two fist bump each other, stretching arms out to each other. That means I'm with...

"Last but not least, Nobasu and Burst against Robot Denki". Electricity?! That sounds hard to  do...

"Now please make your way to your zones" Nezu says while walking away, waving his hand behind him.

I don't any attacks I can do for an electricity quirk... I might need to lean on Domeki to pass this exam. But does she have any attacks we can use? I don't think so...

"DAIKI!!!"

I jump and see her jumping up with a piece of paper. "We're in Ground G!" She pipes and starts walking but looks behind her "Come on! Exams start at any time!!".

I follow her, trying to keep up to her pace. He has those busy-busy walks and kinda looks like she's strutting. It's like she has no sense of worry or dread right now, moments away from an exam. It's honestly surprising.

I ask her nervously, because it's a pretty stupid question, "How are you so calm? I can't think of any plan or moves with both of our quirks against a robot with electricity".

To my surprise, she replies casually "Then we'll just go in head first an try our best!".

"With no plan?!" I ask surprised, she only nods and I say "What if we get in the way of each other?". I don't want to be the reason we both don't get into camp.

"We'll get through it" she shrugs. Oh boy...

...

Let's just say we are NOT getting through it!!!

The robot was the size of a 6'5 man, plated with metal. It electrified the ground too and Domeki accidentally was on the ground, making her feet numb.

My arm was looped on a pillar inside the building, looking a the issue with absolutely no idea. Oh god, I can't grab her, she might electrocute me.

The Denki robot heads for her slowly and puts both of his arms up as electricity buzzes between them. I look around and see a rock pole. That probably came from the pillar. Could that work?

Look back at the ground, Domeki was stuck still and the robot was getting closer. A face of fear was on her face. No... I can't watch her get hurt.

I grab a bit of the pillar and crack it off with all my might. Then I reach out for her, yelling "Grab it!!!". She quickly does so and I pull her off the floor, onto the one above. When she lands she gets on the floor.

I swing from pillar to pillar, stopping at the one right in front of the ghastly robot. They didn't build him a face so it was only a smooth metal layer on his face. It detects me though, and waits for the first move.

How in the world did they program this thing!? What artificial intelligence did they give it?! How can I guarantee that we will win against it?

I think and think, time starts to look like it was slowing down, putting pity on me. I look around and think of everything that I could guess about the Denki bot.

He has electricity... obviously, all we have to do it to disable it... Domeki can't use her quirk because it always detects when she'll activate it and where to move... and it can only spread electricity on one surface.

I look around, time speeding up gradually. I look up to see Domeki-san, getting up, her knees shaking. What did she say before all of this? Oh right, 'go in head first'. But how do I do that?

I think and think. Maybe... if I just go for it and grab him. But that'll be far too dangerous and I could risk putting us at an even more of a disadvantage.

I don't know what, but my head turns up to Domeki again, this time her eyes were glancing at me. I can't let her fail. I can't do that to her. I then think of Kanji, I can fail him. Screw it! I'm doing it!

As soon as I launch my arm out to him, time comes back into pace. My arm stretches around it and crushes, squeezing it tightly. It then stuck its arms into my skin and sends out a shock into me.

It felt... horrible. It was like an electric shock x100. I manage to keep my arm around him, despite the agony. I swear, I can start to see the inside of my arm. I let my other arm, that was grasping the pillar, go and I fall onto the ground. I look up to the robot, seeing it struggling, it reminds me of the heroes I see on TV... despite them struggling, they keep the enemy under wraps to protect people.

"DOMEKI!" I yell out to her "Explode!!!".

I see out the corner of my eye Domeki putting her hands in the direction of the Denki, and then he explodes. It was sudden, even though I knew and planned it. He explode in my arms, leaving nuts and bolts everywhere. My arm retracts as I fall onto the floor.

I look up at the torn building. It was beautiful before we entered it to fight. I see Domeki come down and look over me as my vision goes blurry, but I hear her voice "Damn, Daiki? You really went for it, huh?". That was before I went unconscious.

...

Sumi POV

I think there was a mistake with the robots. Surely those teachers aren't trying to kill us, right? I mean, it nearly lazed Wairdoea's arm off.

We both continued dodging and head through alley ways of the fake city. I sigh sourly "I told you not to fan that robot. What if one of us got underneath that building?". Let me answer that actually, WE WOULD'VE DIED!

"Oh, sorry... I panicked..." she says putting her head down in shame. I kiss my teeth and we continue running.

"Hey, Sumi?" Her voice calls out as I take a little lead "Why don't you express yourself in class? You always seem so pressed...".

Tch, I ignore her and continue running further. Why should she question me?

She then starts "Well, I find it easier to express my nature and adapt around my surroundings, like animals evolving in a habitat". Again with the references!

I dart my head back to her "Everything I say is literally considered 'rude' and 'insensitive'. Why should I adapt?".

Her face lights up "So you can interact with us more! I always wanted to talk to you, Kanji too! But he always says that you won't speak a word..."

I dart my head back "Why should I? 'Wairdoea'?". I say her hero name in a mocking way. "What type of name is that anyway!?".

I feel her pace slow down a bit and her words become more quiet "It's a significant to my background because I'm from the-"

"Countryside?" I interrupt as I look forward again, sarcastically and angrily, "Nobody cares! You always say something about your 'precious' countryside, like you haven't made it clear before! It's annoying!".

I carry on running but I sense her stopping. I stop myself and turn around. I swear, I will f*cking yell at this girl. I turn around and see her staring at the ground, clenching her trembling fists. I suddenly feel the anger washing away, in panic. What...

She looks up at me, her eyes were full with distaste... with no room for any of her usual calmness. She yells at me angrily, her voice sterner than Aizawa "That name was given to the wind by my mother! We always called the wind that name! You ARE rude and you ARE insensitive! You always think you know everything!" She then runs in another direction, hiding her face.

I don't know why but, why do I feel like my heart sank into my stomach? What happened to her mother? Why has it gotten her so upset? Why do I feel... guilty?

My feet stick into the ground, watching her leave me, not doing anything. As soon as she was out of sight, I hold onto my chest. Suddenly, the sound of a laser being activated rings in my ear. I quickly avoid it by dodging out of the way, the robot Rēzā was here. But instead of attacking me, it ran somewhere else.

I look at where it was running.

Wait... no.

I ran away quickly, where Bushida went. We need to stick together! I ran through the alley she entered and start sprinting like I was the one being chased. I can't have her injured.

Finally I see her, distracted by the sky. Her hair was flowing in the wind, definitely not expecting to be fried to a crisp.

I then spot it, Rēzā, charging at her, preparing their lasers. I quickly made two boards, one under me and the other underneath her. I then fling her with the board on the air and as she screams I float up on mine and catch her, surprising her, and flies away. We need to escape, we can't fight Rēzā.

I notice her looks of confusion and procession, and I put her down next to me on the board. "Listen, I'm sorry" I bow my head, already struggling with the words, "I just don't know the difference between mean and true... But that isn't an excuse. I'll try better...".

I wait for a 'You're right, you are', but instead, she hugs me. What? Shouldn't she be boasting about how she's right and I admitted to it? I hug her back though, not saying anything.

We fly out, leaving Rēzā. For some reason, they didn't stop us. At least we passed though.
