THIRTY !

chapter 30, nightmare

CASSIDY DIDN'T WASTE one second as she hurried out of her math class. She heard his disgusting laugh behind her as she ran. While she speed walks to the cafeteria, she bumps into somebody, making all her books fall.

"I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going and I'm in a rush right nowβ€”" Her rambling was the cut off when a familiar voice spoke up.

"Hey, Cass, It's okay. I was just looking for you actually." Adam spoke, making her look up. Cassidy felt tears well up in her eyes and Adam took notice of this. "Whoa, are you okay?"

She sniffles, standing up and holding her books close to her. "Yeah, I'm okay. I just had a rough morning. That's it."

Adam raised a brow, he knew she was lying but he didn't want to push it. He nodded his head; wrapping an arm around her.

"Let's go to the cafeteria and meet with the others, okay?" He asked, Cassidy nodded and they walk down the hallway. She felt someone's brown eyes staring into her skull and when she looked back, her breath was caught in her throat.

Cameron Williams stood there with a smirk on his face, waving her bye with a chuckle. Cassidy gulps, breaking eye contact with him.

"BANKSIE! FRANKENSTEIN! WHATS up? What took you guys so long?" Averman asked, high fiving Adam.

"They were probably sucking faces." Goldberg laughed, making Adam glare at him. Cassidy on the other hand stayed quiet and she was never quiet when Goldberg made a snarky remark.

The team noticed this and started whispering about her. Adam looks at her in worry.

"Cass, are you sure you're okay?" He asked her once again. His voice snapped her out of her thoughts and she just nodded her head with a forced smile.

"Yeah. All good."

Suddenly, there was yelling and running echoing throughout the cafeteria. Cassidy looked up to see the Varsity team running after her brother, Fulton and Russ.

The Ducks noticed as well and they stood up with laughter, running after them.

"DON'T TRY TO suck up to me Averman." Coach Orion's voice spoke as Cassidy arrived at the practice. She slams the door shut, making everyone look her way and they all went silent.

She silently skated towards the team. "Well, where we're you Miss Conway? It isn't very Captain like to be late to practice."

"Yeah, well that's too bad that I'm not captain." She mumbled, taking one knee.

Coach Orion rolled his eyes at her snarky remark and began talking once again. "Defense. See, unlike scoring, defense never quits. But to play great defense, you need one thing above all else."

"Bet it starts with a W." Averman mumbles over to Goldberg who was beside him.

"Confidence." Orion finished, he glances over to Cassidy who wrapped her arms around her self as she sinks into her insecurities. "Listen, if you learnt nothing else when you're here, you learn this. All right? Cause it's not just about hockey. It's easy to be confident when you have control of the puck. It's very very difficult to keep that confidence when you gotta take whatever strange bounces life throws your way."

"Don't be careless, but don't be too careful either. You cannot be afraid to lose. That's how you gain confidence to attack the game when the puck isn't yours. That's how you attack life." He continues and Cassidy listens to every word he says. "Even when you think you don't have any control. And that's how you play real defense."

"CASSIDY, PLEASE TALK to me. I know something is wrong!" Adam yelled after her since she stormed out of the changing rooms right after she changed into her clothes.

Cassidy ignored him, trying to hold back the tears that wanted to fall down her cheeks. Adam then grabs ahold of her arm and spins her around.

"What is wrong!" He yells at her, genuine concern on his face. That's when Cassidy broke. She broke down in tears and she sobbed, and sobbed. Adam just stares at her in surprise for a moment before wrapping his arms around her.

She wanted to tell him.

She really did but she couldn't. She couldn't bring herself to tell him.

Because she remember what he said.

"Now, you tell anyone about what's happening I will make your life even worse here. Got that, Conway?" He said, his voice laced with venom. "I will hurt that pretty little boyfriend of yours and your brother. I'll hurt them so bad that you won't even recognize their face.

Cassidy didn't even bother to look at him, nodding her head in fear.

"Good girl."

And she remembers their deal. As much as she didn't want to do it, she had to. She didn't want them to get hurt because of her and she would never ever forgive herself.

Even if that mean Adam will be hurt mentally by her. At least it wasn't physically.

Cassidy pulls away from him, harshly. Adam furrowed his eyebrows in confusion and he stares at her.

"Whoa, okay, now something is definitely wrong and you can't lie to me anymore." Adam spoke up and Cassidy sniffled.

"Adam," she croaks out not even dating to look at him. "Adam, we need to break up. This isn't working anymore and I can't keep doing this. I found someone else."

Just then, the whole world stopped for Adam. It felt like a huge weight just dropped onto his chest and he couldn't breathe. He just stares at her.

"What.."

"I can't anymore Adam. I justβ€”" Cassidy couldn't finish her sentence, wiping her tears away and she storms down the hallway, leaving Adam there in tears.

From afar, hiding behind a wall, stood Cameron Williams. He chuckled to himself and smirked, knowing that the plan was working.

It was all going according to plan.
