The Hand

Evelyn got out of the spa, complaining about being wrinkly, so it was just James, Mason and myself left now.

The sun was slowly setting behind the clouds and Mrs Brickerly was going to call people for dinner soon.

"I really don't want to go on this museum trip." Mason whined, "Then why'd you take history?" I asked.

He shrugged, "Extra credit."

"I agree with Mason, I have a feeling it's going to be boring." James shrugged.

I wasn't sure wether it was the heat, attraction, or the lack of water I've had today but James was looking extra cute today.

"We could always ditch. It's a field trip, they let us go to explore anyway."

"What's this? Little miss princess Sofia ditching school?" Mason taunted. I glared, flicking water at him.

"I used to ditch all the time, and then I nearly got suspended so I stopped. But we're in Sam Diego, what are they gonna do?"

Mason and James looked at each other before shrugging, "Sure, whatever."

"I'm sure Evelyn won't mind."

"Alright, I'm getting out. Officially bored of you people. Laters." Mason said.

I smiled at James, who was just staring at me in complete silence.

I closed my eyes again, revelling in the last moments of the sun before it went down.

"I like your necklace." He says.

My fingers go up to touch it, "Thanks. It was my Moms."

"Do you look a lot like your Mom?" He asked me.

"I like to think so. We have the same hair and the same eyes. We're also both left handed so."

"You're left handed?"

I nod, giggling.

"We should probably go inside before Mrs Brickerly finds us."

As we get out, I reach for my towel, wrapping it around my body as a slight wind picks up.

It was an almost awkward elevator ride down, as James gets off on his floor and I get off on mine.

"So? How'd it go?" Evelyn said, bombarding me the second I walk in the door.

"Fucking hell- how was what?" I ask, trying to calm my racing heart.

"Your spa time with James? Did you guys kiss?" Evelyn asked, wiggling her eyebrows.

I ignore her and pull my shorts on over my bikini bottoms, grabbing a sweater over the top.

"C'mon, we've got dinner."

* * *

All was well in the dining hall as we all ate our food.

I got chicken parmesan with a side of orange juice and Evelyn got fries with a salad and apple juice.

"No way. Apple juice is sooooo much better than orange."

And we were currently fighting about which juice is better.

"Apple is good, but I get sick of it after a while?" I say, sipping my OJ.

"You're wrong."

Suddenly, my heart stopped as my text alert went off. I held my breath, feeling my heart stop as Evelyns phone went off, then Masons's, then James.

I looked at them all.

We were all wearing the same expression.

Apple juice is definitely better.

I gasped, dropping my fork onto my plate.

"Sofia? Are you alright?" Mrs Brickerly asked.

I nod once, my face paling.

I grab Evelyns arm and yank her away, "They're here. They're with us right now." I said in a hushed whisper.

"What the hell is going on? What does that text mean."

"We we're just talking about if orange juice or apple juice was better. Which means, whoever is threatening us, is here. In our class or- something." Evelyn explained, gripping onto her hair.

"You've gotta be fucking kidding." Mason said under his breath.

I closed my eyes, very close to smashing my phone.

555-345-987
Truth or dare...

"What? Right now?"

"Come on, we'll go upstairs."

None of us spoke as we took the long elevator ride to our floor.

Upon opening the door, the feeling of someone watching me came back. But I stopped in my tracks when I realised something was different about the room.

There was a hammer with a ribbon tied around it. "Let's hope that's for nailing a fucking cross or something." Mason sighed, pushing past me.

"Guys what are we doing? We can't seriously-"

"-Play."

"What?"

"Play. We do what they want okay? We can't risk it. They know too much."

I curled against my bed, hugging my pillow.

555-345-987
Tell the truth about August 9th, 2014.

"Wait, it didn't let me choose?"

"What?"

"It chose for me?"

I was confused, but he was right. Last time we played, we got to choose if we wanted truth or dare.

"It doesn't matter, I'll just-"

He sucked in a breath, "August 9th, 2014. The day we buried my grandfather. I- fuck. My uncle was drink driving and I told him to pull over. He didn't and we got into a fight. He ended up driving down a hill, killing himself and losing my grandfathers hearse in the process."

Woah.

Deep.

"Shit dude, I'm so sorry." James said quietly. "Yeah, me too Mason." Evelyn sighed.

"It's whatever, let's just get on with it."

555-345-987
Evelyn, I dare you to break Sofia's fingers with the hammer.

"WHAT?" Evelyn shouted.

My blood ran cold.

"No. Fuck no, I'm not doing that."

I couldn't speak. My mouth went dry.

"Okay, this is a little more extreme than just petty threats now, what the hell is going on?"

555-345-987
I'm watching you.

"Oh my God they can see us."

My head turns toward the door, "Check the peephole." I whisper.

"What?"

"The peephole. Check it, now."

James rushes over, peering through it.

I jump in surprise, screaming as a knife slices through the wood right beside James head.

James jumps back, landing on the floor as the knife slowly pulls out.

"What the FUCK?"

I get up, scrambling to open the door. I look both left and right, running down the halls.

"Nothing. There's fucking nobody." I scream, wanting to tear my hair out.

Evelyn holds my shoulder, "Come on."

I get back inside, "Are you okay?" I ask James, kneeling down beside him.

He nods slowly.

There are tears pooling in my eyes as I get back onto the bed.

"Evelyn." I say.

"Grab that hammer."

"W-what?" She stutters, staring wide eyed at me, "Get the hammer. Do what the dare says."

"Are you fucking insane? She's not going to break your fingers, Sofia." Mason said angrily.

"We didn't do the dare and ten seconds later, we're being hunted down." I snapped, death glaring Mason.

"If we don't do these dares, I'm so fucking scared something else could happen."

With trembling hands, Evelyn walked to her bag, picking up the hammer.

I placed my hand on the table, putting a shirt in my mouth to bite down on.

James positioned himself behind me, holding onto my waist, tightly.

"Are you sure about this? Can we just take a consequence or something?" Evelyn stammered, freaking out.

"It's okay, just do it." I said.

I looked Evelyn in the eye and then closed mine, feeling my heart stop.

Okay but seriously, what's better? Apple or orange juice? I prefer orange because apple does get a little boring after a while LOL

What do you think will happen next? Do you think Evelyn will go through with it or not?

Happy reading! Xx
