The Betrayal

After our little encounter in my bedroom, James and I have been a bit tense.

Even Evelyn noticed it yesterday, "What happened with you two?" She pestered me, closing her locker door and catching up with me.

Yes, I know it's stupid that I'm back at school and yes, people are staring at me BUT it's okay because being at school is distracting me from this shit-fit of a situation I'm in.

"It's honestly nothing, you're reading too much into it." I laughed, limping as pain starts to shoot up my leg, "Are you sure you're okay?" Evelyn said worriedly.

I smiled and nodded, hobbling into class.

I poked my cold green beans and stale pasta around my tray and sighed.

"What's wrong?" Evelyn asked, I shrugged, "I don't know. I'm just tryna figure out how all of this happened. Like, what did we do? Of all people." I laughed humourlessly.

Eve smiled, "I think we've all been trying to figure it out."

The cafeteria doors swung open and I instinctively looked up, a smile appearing on my face after seeing James walking through, chatting with Mason.

"There are our boys." Evelyn smirked.

I went to go wave, when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket.

My smile suddenly faltered when I saw who it was from.

555-345-987
Miss me?

"Fuck." I whispered.

"What?" Evelyn asked, peering over my shoulder, "Weird, I didn't get one."

555-345-987
T or D, except they decide your next move...

My heart starts beating as I re-read the text 3 times.

My finger slowly presses D before I close my eyes and send it. Who knows what I would have to admit if I pressed truth.

Not even a second later, my phone buzzes in my hand;

555-345-987
Kiss Zack Blakey on the lips and ask him on a date. If he says no, kiss him again.

"What the fuck." I nearly scream, shoving my phone into Evelyn's hands, "Read this shit."

I'm angry now, "Now that's messed up. They can't do that right?" She asked, I shook my head, "It was either this or truth and I-"

"Hey guys." A voice interupts.

I turn to see James and Mason placing their trays down, "What's going on?" He asks. I look at Evelyn who just shrugs, "I'm so sorry." I say directly to James, who has a green bean hanging in his mouth.

"Wait what-"

I get up abruptly, walking over to Zach Blakey's table and tap him on the shoulder, "Uh Zach." I say quietly, he turns around and gives me a once-over before returning to his conversation, "Zach." I clear my throat.

"What freak, can't you see I'm-"

I held my breath as I kissed him, hearing a few gasps from the table about him. He doesn't kiss me back and then I pull away, "Go on a date with me?" I say quietly. He seems shocked, "Yes or no?"

He suddenly smirks, "I'll pick you up at 8."

I nod, my entire body trembling with fear and adrenaline, "What the hell did I just do?" I repeated to myself five times over before I reached my table. And my heart sunk when I realised James was gone.

"Care to explain that little performance?" Mason raised an eyebrow.

I see his mop of shaggy blonde hair bouncing down the hallway and chase after him, "James!" I call, running after him.

"James wait, please!"

I finally catch up to him and latch onto his elbow, however my feelings are hurt when he shoves me off him, "What the fuck was that Sofia?" James spits. He never uses my full name, anymore.

"What?" I stumble, head hanging low, "That with Zach. Are you stupid?" He seethes.

"Hey, that's not fair." I say, trying to defend myself, "You know what's not fair? Being strung along but some girl you think might like you back, only to find she was using you all along and then goes and kisses some jerk who's only going to hurt you."

"I- I can explain I-"

"Then tell me, please. Because I at least deserve an explanation."

I open my mouth to speak when my hand buzzes,

555-345-987
Don't tell him, it's our little secret ;)

Internally, I'm screaming. But externally, I'm grieving.

"I-"

"Exactly. Because you can't. You're exactly who I thought you were." He mumbles under my breath, "Ouch." I sigh, a tear falling down my cheek, "Yeah, getting hurt sucks right?" His eyebrows are furrowed and I wish I could take it all back and choose truth, because maybe then James wouldn't hate me.

"James please I-" My voice is croaky, but I have nothing left to say, "Leave me alone Sofia." He storms off and I'm left in a puddle of my tears in the middle of the hallway.

Dad knocks on my door a few hours later.

After school I went straight to my room, ignoring everyone. Yes it was rude but I didn't want them asking questions.

"I bought you some dinner." He smiled softly, placing the bowl on my desk, "You look nice." He admires.

I smile, "Thanks. I have a date." I finish the loop of my hair and pull the ponytail tightly, flicking two pieces down the side before grabbing my shoes, "Oh, is this that James boy? I like him." Dad asks.

Fuck, what do I say?

"No it's with this guy names Zach. James and I are just... friends."

I tie my laces and fix my jacket before a car honks downstairs, "Okay well uh, have fun. Be home by 11." He says.

I nod and grab my phone off the charger, "Bye Dad love you."

Practically sprinting down the stairs I throw open the door and run to his car, "Hey, sorry."

Zach laughs, "You look hot." He says. "Thanks, so, where are we going?" I ask as he starts his car. "I was thinking a walk through the park to this fireworks display they have, it's not far but it's supposed to be nice."

Oh, that actually sounds kind of nice.

"That sounds fun."

At least this is taking my mind off of everything.

Evelyn
What's going on?

Evelyn
Update me

Evelyn
NOW!!!!!!

I giggled at the texts from my friend and responded with a smiley face before switching off my phone, feeling a gust of wind from my side of the car. Zach opened my door and helped me out, closing and locking his car door behind us.

"This way."

We walk silently through the dark park, the only light coming from street lamps and the bright moon, "How did you find out about this display?" I asked.

He shrugged, "Some friends were going and I thought why not."

Oh okay, so his friends are going to be there. It's okay though right, this is not an actual date?

We're still walking when we get to a clearing and my bad feeling bubbled down once I saw crowds of people, "This is cute!"

"Zach, my man. You made it." Someone high-fived Zach and led us over to a spot by the lake.

I sat in silence, hands folded on my lap for the remainder of the night.
