The Airport

The four of us bid goodbye to our teacher and classmates as a cab picked us up from the airport.

"Of course we'd get sent home." Evelyn huffed, crossed her arms over her chest.

I shrugged, closing my tired eyes, "It's probably for the best I mean, we're not safe and everyone knows it."

"You know what I'm curious about?" Mason said. I opened one eye, peering at him, "What?"

"If this sicko will text us. Like, they're obviously on the trip and if they can't come with us, they can't keep an eye on us."

He had a point, actually. "Yeah, but I thought we'd figured out that there are two of them working together? We're definitely not alone with this." James argued, "Oh true." Mason sighed, sinking back into the chair.

I checked my phone, my Dad was frantically texting me.

Dad:
I'm at the airport.

Dad:
I've booked you a session with Dr Tresel.

Dad:
Are you okay??

Dad:
Rebecca and I are here.

Dad:
Sofia?

I giggled, showing the guys my phone, "Someone's worried." I rolled my eyes, "He should be. How are you going to explain your hand."

My smile immediately faltered and I got annoyed. "Damn." I sighed, "Just say when you tripped, your hand broke your fall." Evelyn shrugged.

"I guess I could... Are you guys coming over after the flight?" I asked them.

"I was probably just going to go home, but I guess I can." James said to me. I nodded, "Guys?"

Evelyn shrugged, "Sure. My Dad doesn't finish work til 6 and my Mom isn't picking me up." I smiled, turning to Mason, "Fine." He huffed.

The cab drove us to airport with us in silence. We had established a plan and I was trying so hard not to fall asleep. "I dibs Evelyn for my plane buddy." Mason mocked, winking at Evelyn.

She rolled her eyes, "Okay whatever." She winked at me subtly and then turned back to Mason to continue her conversation.

I suddenly got nervous, eyeing James who was sitting beside me. "I'm hungry." I blurted. I'm not actually hungry, but I feel like I should eat. Considering all I had yesterday was some toast and like... three drinks.

Speaking of drinks, if this is what a hangover feels like then I do not want it!

"Me too. I feel like a burger." Mason said.

Suddenly, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, expecting another text from Dad.

555-345-987
Close call, right?

I stared point-blank at the text. "Did anyone else just get this?" I held up my phone.

"No but, I got a different one." Evelyn said quietly.

555-345-987
Don't believe everything you see.

"Why are they targeting us?" I questioned, putting my phone away. "I mean, you were the one that discovered the body I guess, and... you are girls." Mason said the last part quietly and I glared at him. "I get it but like- why us?"

The car suddenly jolted to a stop and I looked through the front to see we were stuck in a traffic jam.

555-345-987
Hopefully you don't miss your flight...

"Okay what the fuck?" Mason said, sounding scared as he showed us his phone. All three of us turned to James who was frowning, "I feel left out now." He tried to joke. However, his face fell when his phone went off.

555-345-987
DNA is everywhere

My face paled and I swallowed thickly. The eerie silence throughout the cab making me extremely nervous. "Is that a threat?" James asked. I shook my head, "No but what does it mean?"

"Your blood is in the hotel room from the hand." Mason pointed to me. My eyes widened, "And James's is from when he used that paper cup at the museum."

"I brushed my hair after a shower." Evelyn said. "Guys our DNA is literally all over our rooms."

"We left in such a hurry, do you think we packed everything? Or cleaned up everything?"

My heart was racing fast, and before I knew it, we were moving again. I calmed down a tiny bit, wiping my sweaty hand on my thigh.

We took a sharp turn to the right and San Diego Airport was in front of us with big letters, "Thank you." I said to the cab driver before yanking my suitcase from the back, struggling to do anything. I have one working hand, but both are shaking profusely.

"You okay?" James said, coming to my rescue as he lifted the handle from the holder. I nodded, sucking in a breath, "I think so. Just... nervous. I guess."

"Yeah, me too." He said quietly. "Lets just focus on getting home."

"What would happen if we just like, ignored them." Mason interrupted, "What do you mean?"

"Well, we've been believing what this guy has been saying for weeks now. What would happen if we just ignored them?"

"Everything would happen! That is a terrible idea!" Evelyn growled, slapping his side.

Mason rolled his eyes and swore under his breath, earning a grin from Evelyn.

We made our way inside, the busy airport reminding me of a school morning. With people rushing around and loud chatter, "Okay, our flights at 11 and it's... 9." James frowned, "What gate are we at?" I asked.

"Gate 27." James said, crinkling his nose to read better, "So..." He said, looking up, "This way?"

I snorted, "Okay, let ask someone."

+ + +

I sat, bored on a couch, sleeping on my luggage.

Mason got a burger, Evelyn bought a magazine and James was scrolling through his phone.

"How much longer?" I whined, yawning. "5 minutes since the last time you asked me Sofia." James said, growing annoyed with my complaining.

"I'm so bored!" I sighed, crossing my arms over themselves.

"Go buy a milkshake." Evelyn smiled, "They have a milkshake bar by the entrance over there." She pointed. I followed her finger and my eyes lit up.

"Okay, be back in a sec." I bounced, pulling my wallet from my bag.

I wandered over to the milkshake bar, eyeing the combinations.

"Can I get a chocolate caramel milkshake please?" The guy nodded and I swiped my card.

DECLINED.

"Oh sorry, I must have put my pin in wrong." I laughed. The guy did it again and it said DECLINED

"Do you have cash or something?" I stared blankly at him, "Uh y-yeah. Here." I frowned, hanging him a fiver.

While he was making my milkshake, I checked my bank account details.

INSUFFICIENT FUNDS

"What the fuck?" I said rather loudly, earning a look from the milkshake guy.

Dialling my Dads number he picked up on the first ring, "Oh Sofia, thank God. Are you okay?" He said, sounding frantic.

"Yeah I'm fine uh- did you tamper with my bank account? It's saying I have insufficient funds all of a sudden."

Dad stilled for a second, "No sorry honey. Do you need me to transfer you some money?" He asked. "No, it's okay. Look, I gotta go so I'll see you when I land, love you bye!"

I grabbed my milkshake and walked briskly back to my friends, "Guys my card declined." I said sadly, sipping my milkshake.

"Did you steal it?" Evelyn asked me.

I looked at her and then my milkshake, "Oh no I mean, I had cash. But my card declined."

"Are you poor or something?" Mason smirked, "No. I had over one hundred in there, but now it says insufficient funds."

James perked his head up, "Did you use your card anywhere while we were here?"

I nodded, "I bought a sandwich from the museum because I was hungry."

"They stole your money." James suddenly became frustrated, "What do you mean?" I said confused. "Think about it. They have our DNA and now they've stolen your money. They have access to everything!"

It clicked in my brain and started to make sense.

I frowned, how annoying.

"This is a boarding call for all passengers flying from San Diego to Arizona."

We all swiftly moved to pick up our stuff and start boarding, "Here, I'll take that for you." James smiled, "Are you sure?" I asked, feeling guilty. "Yeah, don't worry about it." He winked.

I felt a blush lift to my cheeks as I followed behind James.
