Chapter 5

Brendon invited Ryan over and the two were on Brendon's couch watching Friends. Ryan had his arm thrown over Brendon's shoulder as Brendon leaned against him. Skylar was sitting at her play table against the wall drawing. The white table had little drawers stocked with paper, crayons, and markers to keep the girl entertained. Whenever she finished a drawing, she would run to Brendon and show him. Every time, Brendon would praise her for her artistic abilities causing her to burst into a fit of giggles then go back to draw more.

She broke her little routine when she stood up and approached Ryan, tapping his knee to get his attention. Ryan looked over at Brendon confused before turning to Skylar giving her his full attention. "Yes, Skylar."

"What's your name?" Her blue eyes stared back at him in curiosity.

"My name's Ryan." Ryan answered with a smile. She nodded, approving his answer.

"Do you love my daddy?" Ryan's face felt like it was on fire. He heard Brendon failing to stifle a laugh beside him. He shot the man a glare before turning back to the little girl, not sure how to answer.

"Well, Sky, uh. Love is a strong, um.." he coughed as if it would help him speak clearly. His throat felt so dry and he desperately wished he had a drink of water. "I like your daddy and uh.. I like him a lot and I care about him a lot too." Skylar covered her mouth as she giggled.

"You look like a tomato." At that point, Brendon lost it and snorted out a laugh. He decided that Ryan was tortured enough and questioned his daughter.

"Why are you asking Ryan that sweetie?" Skylar shrugged and gave him a toothy smile before she ran back to her table. She started scribbling on a new piece of paper. Brendon turned to Ryan and gave him a big smile. "You do look like a tomato," he said while pinching Ryan's burning cheeks. Ryan crossed his arms and sunk back into the couch.

"Do not," Ryan pouted. Brendon rolled his eyes and spread out on the couch, resting his head on Ryan's lap. Ryan uncrossed his arms and ran his fingers through Brendon's hair. The couple continued watching Friends in their new position.

"How do you spell Ryan?" Skylar questioned.

"R. Y. A. N." Brendon replied. Ryan smacked his head gently.

"Don't tell her."

"Why not? She asked."

"She's planning something."

"What do you think she's doing? Planning your murder? She's three." Brendon laughed.

"Well you don't know," Ryan mumbled, embarrassed. "She's smart for her age."

"I'll take that as a compliment." Brendon said proudly. Skylar came back and held out her new drawing for Ryan to see. Brendon lifted his head to peek at the drawing. The little girl had drawn two stick figures holding hands. They were inside a giant pink heart with smaller hearts around their heads. At the bottom of the page, the child wrote 'Daddy + Ryan' in various colors.

"Do you like it?" Ryan thought it was the cutest thing the child had drawn that day.

"It's beautiful, Skylar." She pushed the paper into his hands.

"I made it for you." Ryan smiled.

"Thank you. When I get home, I'll put it somewhere super secret so no one can steal it." Skylar climbed onto the couch and crashed her body into Ryan. Her short arms wrapped around his neck. After getting partially kicked in the face, Brendon moved to the other side of the couch. Skylar took Brendon's spot on Ryan's lap. Her legs hung off one side as she leaned her head on his chest.

"Movie?" She asked Brendon with her puppy dog eyes. Brendon sighed not being able to say no and put on a movie for her. When the title screen came up, Skylar wiggled excitedly.

"Jasmine!" Ryan looked over at Brendon silently asking if this is a normal reaction.

"Aladdin's her favorite movie." Skylar nodded excitedly as she pointed at the screen.

"Well what a coincidence cause this is my favorite movie too."

"Really?" Skylar gasped. He nodded at the ball of energy on him. She turned her attention back to the screen as when the beginning music started. Brendon leaned over whispering in Ryan's ear.

"I didn't know you were so good with kids."

"Neither did I." Ryan turned his head, pressing his lips against Brendon's. He'll never get tired of how perfectly Brendon's lips feel against his. He smiled against the other's lips.

"Ewwy! No kissy face." Skylar pushed her dad away to stop the kiss. Brendon planted a wet kiss on her cheek and apologized. All three gave their attention to the merchant singing Arabian Nights.

As the movie played, Ryan occasionally looked between Brendon and Skylar. He'd never experienced moments like these and craved to have more of them. He loved Aladdin, but watching Brendon and Skylar singing along to 'A Whole New World' brought a new form of love for the movie. Brendon sang Aladdin's part perfectly and added harmony when Skylar sang Jasmine's with so much passion. His heart fluttered with a growing love for both of them.

By the end of the movie, Brendon was asleep on the end of the couch. Skylar wasn't fully awake either, but her small fists rubbed her tired eyes. "Sleepy time," the child yawned.

"Wanna go to bed?" She nodded standing on his thighs and wrapped her arms around his neck. Ryan stood up holding the girl against him. She rested her head on his chest and let her eyes shut. "Where's your room?" He asked, but only received a grunt in response.

Walking down the hallway, Ryan took a guess as he opened a door covered in drawings. When he turned on the light, he knew he was right about the room, but was stunned. Brendon sure knew how to make sure his daughter would want for nothing.

The room itself was simple with grey carpet and light purple walls. Along one wall, there was a shelf filled with every book a child could want. Next to that shelf was a shorter shelf with plastic tubs filled with toys. It was surprisingly organized with each tub containing a specific type of toy. There was also a fake kitchen and no doubt came with a set of fake utensils and food to play with. There was a small desk similar to Skylar's play table in the living room. At the foot of the child's bed sat a wooden toy chest.

Ryan pulled the covers back and carefully laid the child down in the bed. He turned to leave the room, but Skylar's voice stopped him.

"Story." He saw her now sitting up with her bottom lip sticking out. Ryan hesitated before heading to her book shelf. "No," her voice small, "you."

"Me?" Ryan pointed to himself confused and she nodded. "You want me to make up a story?" She nodded again, laying back again. "Okay, um." He looked around the room for inspiration. His eyes landed on a picture sitting on the nightstand where Brendon had Skylar on his lap. Both were laughing carefree. It was the perfect moment that captured what their relationship was like. Brendon was a ball of sunshine and energy and his daughter was a mini version of him.

"So the sun," Ryan smiled at the picture before turning his attention to Skylar, "he was always so happy. He always smiled and laughed and shined so bright. His favorite season was summer because he could stay bright the longest. And then there was the moon," Ryan moved and sat at the edge of bed near Skylar's feet, "He wasn't as happy as the sun. He always stayed in the dark. Then one day, he saw the sun leaving just as the night was coming. The moon was upset that he couldn't be next to the sun. He tried to make his own sun, but they were too small and didn't shine as bright, so he threw them into the night sky. He tired so many times that he was soon surround by all the small lights he made." Skylar gave a small frown.

"The moon looked forwarded to seeing the sun for a little bit whenever the day would end. He even grabbed one of the little lights and shot it across the sky wishing the sun could see what he made for him and wishing they could meet each other."

"And one day, the moon's wish came true!" Skylar gasped happily. "The sun found the moon moving slowly across the sky, still making the little lights. When the moon saw the sun shining so brightly next to him, he smiled almost as bright. The sun told him that the summer was very long that year and didn't wanna be alone, so the moon kept him company. The sky looked so beautiful when they were together."

"What did the sky look like?" Skylar asked consumed with the story.

"It was so pretty. The clouds were extra fluffy and the birds were so happy. Everything was golden." The girl smiled at the image. Ryan continued, starting to bring the story to an end.

"The moon soon fell in love with the sun, but no matter how much he wanted to be with the sun, they both knew they couldn't stay together forever. So they left each other." Skylar whispered a soft 'no.' "But it was okay because they knew they'd always love each other. The moon still makes small lights for the sun in case he'll be able to see them."

"Can we still see the lights?" Skylar asked as she sat up in the bed.

"Of course. As long as the sky is clear, we can see the lights. I think the sky's clear tonight. Do you wanna see if we can see them?" Skylar kicked off her covered and jumped into Ryan's arms. He chuckled and carried her to the window, pulling back the curtains. The little girl gasped in wonder and she saw all the stars twinkling in the sky. She pointed up at the moon and smiled. After a while, Ryan shut the curtains and laid the child back in bed.

"Is the moon still sad?" Ryan tucked the girl in and shook his head.

"No. He's not sad anymore because even if they can't see each other, he knows he has the sun. Now, it's time to go to sleep. Alright?" She rested her head on the pillow and nodded, closing her eyes, mumbling a goodnight.

Ryan backed out of the room, whispering goodnight as he shut off the light. He quietly closed the door and let out a sigh. He couldn't wipe the smile off his face as he turned to head down the hallway. He jumped and threw his hand over his mouth to stop any noise from coming out. Brendon stood there, giggling to himself.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you." Ryan shrugged it off pretending not to be as effected as he actually was.

"It's cool." His arm came up to scratch the back of his head. "So, how much of that did you hear?" Nodding his head to the door.

"Enough to know why we have stars." Brendon wrapped his arms around Ryan's neck and pulled him into a kiss. "You're amazing, Ross." Ryan wrapped held Brendon by his waist.

"Not as amazing as you." They pressed their foreheads together and gazed into each other's eyes.

"Stay with me tonight." Ryan was taken a bit by surprise before nodding. Brendon took his hand and led him to his room. They both stripped down to their boxers, but left their shirts on. Brendon laid with his back to Ryan as Ryan wrapped his arm around Brendon's waist pulling him tightly against him. Ryan planted a kiss on the back of Brendon's head. As Brendon slipped into deep sleep, Ryan's heart pumped rapidly in his chest as he thought about his growing feelings for the boy in his arms.
