Chapter 42: Good Things Don't Last

Akira's POV

Dad and I finished my hunt within half an hour. I had found a bunny relatively quickly and ate it. It did help satiate my hunger for the moment. If I could have gone off on my own, I probably would have if my dad did not have to go and teach the remedial class. He had locked me in just to be safe, and according to my classmates, they were in class until 2am. I do not know how the man can operate on so little sleep, but that did come in handy when I was a baby.

However, I could not shake the feeling that someone was watching us before the hunt. My senses are all out of whack right now for some odd reason, so I could not figure out if someone was actually watching in. This entire camp is just frustrating me - inside and out.

We start the next day of training at the same time - early morning wake up call, and an even earlier wake up for me (being the teacher's son sucks sometimes). Once Dad makes sure all of the other students have started their training, he and Mandalay walk up to me to start mine. I simply close my eyes and move my head to the side so he can inject me with the ketamine to knock me out. Dad repeats the previous day's process: fill the syringe, give me the shot, and prepares to catch me. It does not work immediately like it did yesterday, but it still does they trick. I am met with darkness within ten seconds.

Third Person POV

Mr. Aizawa catches his son, who is more compliant today than he had expected. He is proud of him for how his hunt went yesterday - Eraser Head knows they are headed in the right direction. However, he takes note of the differences between yesterday and today. "That took longer than it did yesterday." He puts his son's unconscious body over his shoulder.

Mandalay shrugs as they begin walking towards the cave. She can tell Class 1-A's teacher is concerned: Mr. Aizawa has an increased pace. She reassuringly says, "Maybe it is because he was expecting it this time?"

"Or maybe he is already growing a resistance to it," Mr. Aizawa retorts. It is not that Mr. Aizawa wants to believe something is wrong, but he has to look out for everything - especially since his boy is in a state of flux with his powers right now.

The two reach the cave in no time. Quickly, they lock the boys wrists and ankles. Akira wakes up quicker this time, just as his father had expected. He takes in his surroundings while waking up from the sedative.

Suddenly, he starts shaking his head back and forth. "No no no no," he mutters. Each "no" gets louder as Akira's dark powers overtake him. He cranes his back and screams, "NO!", but it turns into an inhuman growl at the end of it.

The boy looks at his father with blacked out eyes, but soon shakes his head back and forth again. His father watches as the darkness backs away to reveal his red irises. "Akira," Shota Aizawa states, "is that you?"

"Y... Yes," the boy answers. He looks his father in the eyes and nods as he does so. Akira squints hard, moving his neck around in a circle. "Yeah, I'm... okay." He looks from his father, to Mandalay, to his father. With another nod, he repeats, "I'm okay. I'm me." His voice has its inhuman tone to it, but this form has always had that inhuman echo and deeper tone to it.

Mr. Aizawa turns to the heroin behind him. She nods with a small smile, confirming that Akira is telling the truth. Eraser Head responds with the same action then says, "Let's begin."

He folds his arms across his chest, trying to hide his pride for his son. He messes with the cuff of his sleeve as he asks, "What is your name?"

"Akira Aizawa," he replies immediately. He readjusts himself, trying to stand as straight up as he can even though there is no ground to balance himself upon.

"Good." Mr. Aizawa cannot contain his pride this time, so he praises his son. Another question comes: "What is my name?"

"Shota Aizawa," Akira responds. "Also known as the Erasure Hero: Eraser Head." A small smile comes to the boys face; his fangs peaking out between his lips, but not in a threatening fashion. "Although, Uncle Mic gave you that name."

A matching smirk appears on his father's face. "Smartass..." he says under his breath. Akira's enhanced hearing allows him to hear his father's remark, so he lets out a small laugh.

Mr. Aizawa is about to ask the next question, but stops himself. His nerves make him put his hands in his pockets and ball his fists.

"Don't stop, Dad." Akira surprises his father by jumping in with this. The boy is already breathing heavily while waiting for the question. "Ask it."

Aizawa takes a good look at his child. He sees the darkness in his son's eyes - he can swear it is moving, ready to overtake the boy at any moment. With a deep and nervous breath, Mr. Aizawa asks, "What is your mother's name?"

Akira is about to answer, but he let out a growl instead. He struggles against the arm restraints trying to grab is head. He shakes his head back and forth. He arches his back, as if the power is fighting him from within. Eventually, Akira stops and brings his attention back to his father. One of his eyes still has the red iris, but the other is blacked out. "T...Tokaba... Mizukage," he tries his best to say. "Tokaba... Mizu...kage..." He bares his teeth, snapping at them before turning away. He fights his inner demon, brawling as he kicks against the restraints.

"Akira!" Mr. Aizawa shouts. His outburst is not out of anger but concern. He has seen how his son gets when he tries to mention his mother or even just say his mother's name. The response is always visceral, but Shota knows that cannot be helped. After what that woman did to his boy, Akira's inner protective instincts would always act up. Mr. Aizawa has always thought this reaction would only stop if Tokaba was dead, but that is not exactly a theory he was willing to test.

Akira fights and fights against the restraints. Mr. Aizawa sees blood appear on his son's arm, dripping down from the wrist restraint. "Stop, son," he whispers. "You're hurting yourself."

Mandalay could see how much his son's state is hurting Mr. Aizawa. She speaks up, "Try to distract him with another question - something that will most definitely bring him back to consciousness."

Mr. Aizawa turns to Mandalay, the pain visible in his eyes. He wracks his brain around a question, then finds one within his thoughts. "What is your best friend's name?" the teacher asks loudly.

Immediately, Akira stops moving. The growls and the struggling cease at the question. "What..." Mr. Aizawa repeats, "...is your best friend's name?"

Akira turns his attention back to his father. His eyes are a little darker, but the red iris in one of his eyes is still peaking through. "Shoto," Akira answers as clear as his answers from the very beginning. "Shoto Todoroki."

Mr. Aizawa relaxes a bit. "Good, that's right," he starts. "Shoto Todo..."

"Must...protect...Shoto," Akira interrupts. His eyes find the entrance to the cave, then back to his father. His face turns into a threatening grimace. "Shoto... is... mine." He lets out a deep growl - this one seems more threatening than the others before.

It all became clear in Mr. Aizawa's head. Why his son's powers were fluctuating - why Todoroki's presence sometimes set Akira off while other times brought him back from a flare up. A small smile peaks on the edge of Mr. Aizawa's lip. I called it.

"Akira," Mr. Aizawa exclaims. "Why do you need to protect Todoroki?"

Akira lets out a deep growl again. "Shoto is mine," he repeats with a bit more conviction and clarity. He struggles saying his next sentence through growls. "His... blood... is... mine."

Suddenly, Akira's eyes dart towards the cave entrance. "Shoto... hurting!" he growls. He pulls against his arm restraints. "Must... protect... save... him..!" Akira pulls against the restraints even harder than before. The harder he pulls, the more blood appears on his wrists.

However, that is not what scares the two pro heroes the most. They hear movement in the rocks where the boy's arm restraints come from. Mandalay exclaims, "Eraser!"

"Akira, stop! Todoroki is okay!" Shota yells. Akira's attention is brought back to his father. He growls at the older Aizawa. "He's training his quirk, remember? He's using his fire and ice to regulate the temperature of the water he is in - he's trying to use both parts of his quirk at once. Remember?" He holds up his hands as nonthreatening as he can.

Akira takes a few deep breaths, moving his gaze from the pro heroes to the entrance of the cave. Soon, his breathing slows. The darkness allows both of his irises to become clear. "I..." he says. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay, son," Aizawa explains. He has a small smile on his face - clear as day. "I think I finally have an answer for what is going on with you."

"R... Really?" his son responds.

"Yeah," Aizawa answers. He moves closer to the pool and his son. "I think that's enough for today," he says. "Is that okay with you?"

Akira nods, struggling but moving his head to the side once more. Mr. Aizawa takes the vial out once again. He injects his son with the ketamine, then starts releasing him from the restraints. Akira's head slumps over almost immediately. Mandalay helps Aizawa by releasing his son's feet. They wipe the blood from the boy before heading out of the cave.

"You were right," Mr. Aizawa tells the heroin. "He was just expecting it. Now, he was too exhausted for the sedative not to work immediately."

Mandalay smiles at his response. "So you know what's going on with is powers now?" she questions.

"I think I do." Mr. Aizawa has an even bigger smile than before. "Let's just say Mic owes me $50."

Akira's POV

My head hurts a lot less when I wake up. "D... Dad..." I mutter as I come to. I am in a similar position as yesterday when I come to - my father is giving me a piggie-back ride.

"That was fast" is his immediate response. He lets out a small laugh. "How much do you remember?" he asks.

I think back on what had happened. "Pretty much everything is clear, except for after you asked me her name," I answer. I try and think harder, but I can just see blurs in my memory. "Did you ask me anything after that?"

My father nods and says, "You'll remember eventually." As he says that, we reach the dorms once again. He lets me down, helping me regain my balance. "I'm going to take a look into her notes tonight and see if what I figured out was correct," he explains. "Once I know for sure, I'll let you know what I discovered."

"Can't you tell me now?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"1. Because I would rather tell you once I get confirmation of my theory as to not get your hopes up."

"And 2?"

"I don't wanna spoil the surprise."

"Dad!" I shout as he walks away to the teacher's dorms.

I follow Mandalay in disappointment inside. My eyes find Shoto immediately. We meet up; he leans against me again, but this time with his fire side against my body. I can feel a lot of heat come from him. "Exhausted again?" I ask. I take in his presence. "You seem more exhausted today than yesterday."

"I think I overdid it a bit," Shoto answers. "I think I got a bit overheated and while trying to fix that, I almost gave myself frostbite."

"Dang, and here I thought I had it rough," I say. I let my head fall against his for a moment.

We separate and he asks, "How did yours go?"

I bring my voice down a bit. "It went better than yesterday. I remember most of it, except a part in the middle is a bit fuzzy. Hopefully I'll remember it before tomorrow."

"Do you remember yesterday yet?" he questions.

I think back to the previous days events. This time, the shapes in my memory are clear as day. "Actually," I exclaim, "I do."

Shoto hugs me. I meet his embrace with my own. "Good," he says.

Pixie Bob and Ragdoll shout to get everyone's attention. It is time to make dinner. We all go outside and see some tables set up with vegetables.

Shoto and I go to the end of one set and start making our food. Bakugo goes at his vegetables with ease - like he has been a skilled chef for a long time. Kirishima seems to exhausted to defend others from Bakugo's wrath. Everyone else seems to be in good spirits.

Third Person POV

"Ow!" Kaminari shouts. He stops cutting up his vegetables, setting the knife down on the table.  He looks at his hand, a small cut appearing on his index finger.

Ururaka rushes to his side at the sound of his yelp. "Are you okay?" she asks. Ida appears next to her, trying to figure out the cause for alarm.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just clumsy, I guess," he responds. The small cut seems to be a little larger than a papercut.

Jiro walks by with her own clean vegetables and comments, "Yeah, clumsy is saying it lightly."

Before Kaminari can make a retort to the musical girl, Bakugo storms over to the yellow-haired boy. "Hey, dude," Kaminari says, "I'm... hey!" Bakugo drags the boy by the wrist over to the end of the three rows of tables where he had been working. "What... are you doing, Bakugo?"

"I'm trying to make sure it isn't infected! Stop being a wuss and just come here!" Bakugo stops at his cooking area, slamming Kaminari's hand on the table. "The light is better over here!" he shouts. He pinches the wound, making a single drop of blood fall onto the table. As soon as it hits the counter, Bakugo turns to his right. He smirks and spats, "You got a problem, Red Eyes?"

Everyone's attention turns to Akira Aizawa, who cannot take his eyes off of the wound. His eyes are red, but his hair does not rise like if he is using his Erasure Quirk. Something about his demeanor seems... odd to the other students watching in. "Akira, what's wrong?" Ida questions.

Todoroki then steps in front of Akira, nudging the boy's shoulder with his own so he turns away from the group. "He gets queasy around blood," Todoroki explains. He sighs, "He'll stare at it for a minute then pass out."

Kaminari scratches the back of his head. He squeaks, "I didn't realize my small cut would cause such an..."

"He wasn't asking you, Icy Hot," Bakugo jumps in. With Kaminari's wrist still in his grip, he walks closer to Akira and Todoroki. "He was asking the red-eyed freak behind you."

Shoto feels Akira grab his own wrist. Even though his back is turned where the others could not see the changes, Todoroki can feel his friend's claws against his skin. "Like I just said, he..."

"Why don't you stop defending your boyfriend, and let him speak for himself!"

"Akira is queasy around blood. If Kaminari had a bandage, then maybe he could be the one to answer you!"

Bakugo lets Kaminari go and storms up to Todoroki. He arrives an inch away from Shoto's face. "I bet you know, don't you?" he spats. He puffs up his chest a little bit. He clenches his fist and snaps, "I bet you know his dirty little secret, don't you? You both are always together, so I bet you know just what kind of monster he really is." Bakugo pops a few explosions in his hands threateningly. "If you don't tell me, I'm going to make you regret it."

"I have no idea what your talking about. I'm the one trying to tell you the truth, yet you're the one not listening," Todoroki rebuts. Todoroki brings his voice down. He grits his teeth. "And call him a monster one more time, and I'll make you regret it."

Kirishima, tiredly, grabs Bakugo's left arm and tries to pull him back. "Bakugo, back off," he tells his friend. However, even Todoroki can tell that Kirishima is not trying very hard. Kirishima had always been someone who did not like fighting between his classmates. Todoroki knows he is tired, but he is not trying to make Bakugo take back anything he said. Does he know something too? Todoroki thinks.

Suddenly, a new voice enters the area. "Is there a problem?" Mr. Aizawa appears in the middle of Class 1-A. He has a more annoyed look on his face than normal.

"No, sir," Kirishima replies as he lets Bakugo go and turns to the teacher. "Kaminari just cut his finger, and Bakugo was trying to see if it was infected." Kirishima purposely leaves out the altercation between the boys, but Mr. Aizawa had clearly seen what was going on before he had spoken up.

"Is that all?" Mr. Aizawa asks. He looks to his son and Todoroki. He sees Akira's death grip on Shoto's wrist, his extended claws and all. The elder Aizawa pinches the bridge of his nose. "You and your uneasy stomach..." he says loud enough for the class to hear. He takes a bandage out of his sweatshirt pocked and hands it to Kaminari. He looks at his students. "Get back to work! You only have so much time before tonight's activities." He walks up to be face-to-face with his son. The boy has glowing red eyes, but that is as far as his facial features have gone. "You, come with me."

"Okay," he whispers. The boy follows his father into the woods once again.

Close by, Midoriya takes in the entire altercation between his classmates. As he puts the firewood in its place underneath the stove, he thinks about everything that has happened. Akira Aizawa is hiding a Quirk - he is sure of it. Whatever this Quirk of his is, it is extremely dangerous.

From his initial experience with it before and during their Final Exam, it makes Akira's eyes glow red even though he is not using his father's Quirk. It activates without his consent in periods of high stress or when he takes damage. He reacts violently when the Quirk activates: claws, fangs, and pointed ears appear when the Quirk activates. He seems to crave something from other people, but he did not specify what when Midoriya saw the Quirk activate. He also has red irises and blacked out sclera sometimes. His voice gets deeper and has a bit of an echo to it. Also, it seems like there are times when an alternate personality takes over.

Midoriya had written all of this down in his notebook, where he keeps notes on all heroes - including his classmates. Akira had multiple pages due to his multiple Quirks; when he discovered this power, he added another one. Initially, he had no idea what kind of power he could have.

Then the incident at the mall happened.

When Tomura Shigaraki threatened the two of them with death, Akira did not seem originally frightened until the villain threatened to expose his secret. During that time, Midoriya had an up close and personal look at Akira's features. He had seen fangs appear inside of his friend's mouth. Shigaraki had also called Akira a "Bloodsucker" and said he would eat everyone in the mall around them. From that moment on, Midoriya knew that Akira's final Quirk has some sort of vampire element to it.

From the moment they got to camp, Akira has seemed off. He had had a panic attack, or at least that is what Mr. Aizawa had said it was. However, Midoriya has seen it differently the entire time. He had been sure that the substance Mr. Aizawa had poured in his son's mouth the first day of camp was blood. Midoriya had seen Mr. Aizawa take his son up to his training sight, but his fellow student was over his father's shoulder unresponsive both today and yesterday during their training sessions.

Then, for some reason, Midoriya had followed Bakugo and Kirishima into the woods as they tailed the Aizawas. He had listened to their entire conversation. Mr. Aizawa had asked weird questions like if Akira could still taste the food - as if one day, he would not be able to anymore. Akira had said the food did not satisfy him right now. It also seemed like Mr. Aizawa was actually training this power with him, unlike what Akira had told his classmates he was being trained with. Finally, Midoriya saw him transform - and it scared him. Akira had seemed like he was in the right state of mind, but what if one day he would not be. He could be extremely dangerous.

Kacchan certainly was not helping. Ever since the final exam - more the incident in the locker room after their swimming competition, Bakugo had been trying to get the truth out of Akira. Him trying to get the truth out of the Aizawa was - to Bakugo it seemed - by any means necessary. The threat in the locker room had just been the beginning. Bakugo had brought Kirishima into the fold yesterday when they followed the teacher and son into the woods.

Now, he was trying to get the truth out in front of the entire class. Kaminari's injury worked in Bakugo's favor. He had exposed the blood right in front of Akira, and it seemingly worked out the way the explosive teen wanted it to. Akira had been entranced by the blood, and it may have escalated if Todoroki had not stepped in.

Todoroki has to know about this power, Midoriya thinks. He hates to say that Kacchan is right, but he cannot deny what he has seen from the scarred boy. Todoroki always comes to Akira's defense when something about this power is brought up or happens - he had forcefully turned Akira around to pull his gaze away from Kaminari's blood. Todoroki had also come to Akira's defense in the locker room; he was also with Akira when he had the "panic attack".

"Midoriya." Someone's voice reaches his ears. He turns his head to see the very person he had just been thinking about above him. "Are you okay? You've been staring at that firewood for a few minutes now."

He waves his hands up in front of his face. "I'm fine, Todoroki," Midoriya replies. The boy gets back to work with the firewood. He thinks the question over in his head, then asks, "Hey, Todoroki, is Akira okay?"

"Like I said..." Todoroki starts to say in an annoyed tone.

"I don't mean that," Midoriya interrupts. "I more mean in general." The green-haired boy turns his head to the woods where both Aizawas had exited the area. "It seems he's been having a hard time lately. The final exam took a lot out of him, and then there was the incident with Shigaraki at the mall. Then he has a panic attack during our first assignment at camp; he just seems to be going through a lot at the moment." Midoriya has a small smile appear on his face for just a moment before returning to the straight face from before. "Though not a lot of people may notice, I can tell how protective Mr. Aizawa is of Akira - and he is being especially protective right now." He looks up at the boy's best friend. "I'm just most concerned whether he's okay."

Todoroki thinks everything Midoriya had said into his head. He cannot tell if all of Midoriya's words are truthful - if he is truly concerned with Akira's wellbeing. However, he cannot just leave the kid hanging. "I can't tell you everything, because that is Akira's story to tell, but what I can tell you is this: Akira is doing the best he can. He's going through a lot right now." He takes a deep breath in and out. "Mr. Aizawa and Akira lost his mother almost eight years ago now. It broke Mr. Aizawa; even though he has always had a cold exterior, I know how much it hurt him and changed their lives. Mr. Aizawa had to move closer to UA almost immediately after it happened. He was always so busy: teaching at UA in the mornings, having a few hours to take care of his son in the afternoon, then doing hero work at night. It was hard for a single father in his position. Raising Akira was also no easy feet, so I've heard." He lets out a small laugh. "Akira has a lot of anxieties which cause panic attacks, and he is also going through a depressing time right now since it is close to when his mother passed. Having these events coincide finals, the mall incident, and our training camp certainly does not help." Todoroki picks up a few bowls and utensils. "But they have a support system - the UA teachers helped Mr. Aizawa raise Akira. They supported Mr. Aizawas every decision since that day eight years ago. Then, ever since we reconnected, my family has been there for them as well." He looks back at the green-haired boy. "So there's no need to worry about him, Midoriya. They have what they need."

All Midoriya does is reply with a nod. He does not know how much of Todoroki's story is truthful, but he has to give the boy the benefit of the doubt. They spend the rest of the evening cooking their stew; Todoroki and Midoriya converse about All Might and Kota while waiting for the nights events to occur.

Mr. Aizawa had been taking his son to a clearing, but Akira began to speed up and soon the roles are reversed. "Akira!" Mr. Aizawa yells trying to get his son to stop. He realizes his son is upset when he hears a deep and desperate breath. He uses his scarf to grab his son and turn him around. He can see the tears in his eyes. "Hey, hey, hey," Mr. Aizawa says while lowering his voice. He releases his son and cups his face with his hands. "What's wrong?"

Akira takes his jacket sleeve and rubs the tears off his cheeks. "It's me - I'm the problem. I've always been the problem," he replies.

"What are you talking about?" Mr. Aizawa asks. "You've been doing so good. You stayed conscious the whole time during our training except for a single moment. That's progress - you're doing great."

Akira backs away from his father and turns around. "Even so, I come back here and a single cut on one of my classmates fingers sets me off." He runs a frustrated hand through his hair. "I go into a trance just looking at it, and I can barely stop myself from going ape-shit on Kaminari." He spins around to where his father can see how upset he has become. Even more tears are streaming down his face. "And it certainly doesn't help that Bakugo knows that I'm hiding something. He has nearly outed me in front of the class - TWICE." He rolls his eyes and walks a bit to the side. "And, of course, let's not forget about Midoriya. He also knows something - he probably knows more than Bakugo because he was up close and personal with me at the mall when Shigaraki attacked." Akira stops walking and rubs his eyes with both hands. "This would be so much easier on everyone if I wasn't around."

"Hey!" Mr. Aizawa shouts. His son stares at him, the whites of his eyes red from tears. "Don't you ever say that."

"Why not?!" Akira yells back. "It's true!" He thrusts one of his arms out to the side. "You wouldn't have to make up so many excuses for me if I wasn't around! You wouldn't have to lie to everyone about your ex-fiancé being a psychotic maniac who tortured your son to the point where his mind broke, and the only reason why he is even alive is because he has a super dangerous Quirk that won't let him die unless you send a stake through his heart like in Bram Stoker's novel." Akira lets out a sad laugh. "But then again, who wouldn't get killed by a stake to the heart?"

Mr. Aizawa stares at his son. "Akira, please stop this."

"I'm not done." The boy waves a finger out in front of him. "You wouldn't have to worry about your own son attacking the other students if I wasn't like this. You wouldn't have to worry about making connections with other people if what I have done and who I am wasn't such a precedent issue."

"Akira, I am not ashamed of you," Mr. Aizawa tells him bluntly.

"And I know that. ...and I really wish you were lying so it would make me feel better." Akira's tears start streaming faster. "I can't even talk to my classmates anymore without worrying that I might attack them. It certainly does not help that one of them keeps asking for it to happen, no matter how many bullshit stories I pull out of my ass to try and cover myself."

Mr. Aizawa takes a step closer to his son, who takes a step back when his father tries to step closer. "Akira, I made a mistake. The only reason Bakugo knows about your secret and is doing this is my fault. I thought pairing you, him, and Midoriya during the finals would help challenge you to become a better hero. I thought I was right in that moment," Mr. Aizawa looks his son up and down, "but I didn't think about how it would affect you after the fact, and I'm sorry."

Akira shakes his head. "It's not your fault, Dad. It's my fault." He throws his arms out to the sides. "This wouldn't be happening if I didn't have this Quirk!"

Then, Akira runs up to a tree behind him. He starts punching the large trunk repeatedly. His father could hear the snapping of bones against the tree as his son continuously punches the bark. Blood falls from fingers onto the ground and stains the brown wood.

Mr. Aizawa runs up to his son, holding his arms down as he hugs the boy. "You... You shouldn't be this..."

"Shut up," Mr. Aizawa tells his son while trying to hold back his own tears. He falls back onto the ground.

Akira starts to cry just a bit harder. "I can barely look at Todoroki anymore without wanting to attack him and drink his blood." Akira lets out a louder cry. "Dad, why can't I be normal?"

Shota Aizawa's embrace gets tighter. "I... I don't know, son," he whispers. "I don't know."

They did not say anything for a while. The father holds the son as he cries. He feels the boy hold onto his arm like it is the only thing keeping him from drowning. As strong as Akira is, Mr. Aizawa cradles his boy like he is back in the lab eight years prior. The sun goes down further as they sit together in the woods.

"Dad," Akira says after most likely half an hour.

Mr. Aizawa does not let go when he answers, "What?"

"Can you do me a favor?"

"It depends on what that favor is?"

"Can you take me up to the cave? I don't want to risk the safety of others until I get this thing completely under control."

"Are you sure you want to miss out on the test of courage?"

"Yes. Besides, you have classes to teach later so I'll be less of a bother and worry to you."

"Stop saying that," Mr. Aizawa exclaims. He holds his son even tighter. "You are not a bother to me. I am not ashamed of having you as a son. I am not disappointed by you. I worry about you because you are my son. I love you."

Akira sighs, "I know, and I love you too, Dad." He tightens is own grip for a second around Mr. Aizawa's arm. "I'm sure, Dad."

Without turning around, Mr. Aizawa takes a new vial out of his pocket. He grabs the syringe and fills the bottle. Akira moves his head to the side, allowing Mr. Aizawa to find the vein to stick the medicine into.

However, Mr. Aizawa stops before he can inject his son. His hands are shaking now. Akira grabs his father's hands, bringing the syringe closer to his own neck. "I can do it," he whispers. Still, his father does not let go as Akira stabs himself in the neck and pushes the plunger full of ketamine down. Since he is exhausted after crying, the medicine works almost instantly. He passes out, collapsing in his father's arms.

Mr. Aizawa does not leave for the cave immediately though. Instead, he takes his teenage son and cradles him once again. "I'm sorry, Akira," he whispers. "I'm so sorry." After a few moments, Mr. Aizawa takes his boy up to the cave.

Once he is there, he locks his boy in. Akira wakes up as soon as his final cuff is locked. He meets his father's eyes. "Please go," he tells him.

Eraser Head starts to speak, "I can..."

"Dad," Akira interrupts. Their eyes meet with saddened expressions. "Please."

The one word breaks Mr. Aizawa's heart, but he complies. He leaves Akira up in the cave alone, and he returns to the camp to teach his remedial classes.

Looking back on it now, Mr. Aizawa wishes he never left his son alone in that cave.
