Chapter 38: First Trip to the Mall = Last Trip to the Mall

Akira's POV

I had thought the final exam would be the worst bloodlust day for me.

I was wrong - very wrong.

I wake up the morning after the Practical Exam with an empty stomach. How annoying... I had been too exhausted after the final exam to dream, thank god. Once my father unchained me from my bedroom floor, I walk into the living room and flip face-first on the couch. "Uh..." I moan.

"Still not any better?" my dad asks. He puts a few papers in the small bag he takes to work with him.

I respond with a firm "Uh!" I fling my arm off the side angrily.

I hear my dad move around in the kitchen. He moves to the fridge, pulling something out of it. "Do you want a bag just to be safe?" he asks.

"No" is my response. But my body shoots itself up on all fours, "Yes!" I shake my head back and forth. "Fuck..." I mutter under my breath. I flop back down on the couch.

Dad snaps his fingers. "Kitchen," he commands, "butt - here - now." I hear the slosh of the bag on the counter.

I groan as I stand up and move to the kitchen. I grab the bag irritated, extend my fangs, and stab the bag. I drink the bag dry slowly, hoping that might help my situation. Once I finish, I stroll over and throw the bag in the trashcan. When I stop and survey myself, I groan even louder, "UH!"

"I'm guessing that didn't help," Pops says.

"Obviously not." I put my hands over my face. "Sorry, Dad," I tell him.

"Hey." He comes over and pats me on the shoulder. "We are going to figure this out." He grabs his bag and mine as we head to the door. "Just try not to take anyone's head off at school today."

"Tell that to the 140lb Pomeranian with a selfish need to be a pain in my ass." I stop after I said that and stare at my dad. "You heard me," I chuckle.

My dad pushes my head down and messes with my hair. And with that, we head to UA. The drive is pretty quiet; we did not have much to say. I am kind of excited to go today. We will be leaving for the training camp soon. Maybe Level 3 can help stop me from slowly going insane.

My dad goes to the teacher's lounge when we arrive at school. I make my way to the classroom and wait for the other students to arrive. Most of the students are happy, but there are five who are not. Sato, Sero, Kaminari, Ashido, and Kirishima are very down that they are not going to go to camp.

Mina cries, "I look forward to hearing all the... stories about... how fun...camp was... everyone..."

Midoriya is trying to help cheer up the five unlucky ones. "Maybe they'll end up letting you go," he suggests. "There might be a last-minute twist or something."

Sero puts his hand on Midoriya's shoulder. "Stop that, Midoriya, by saying that out loud, you're just jinxing them."

Kaminari starts muttering under his breath. "They said whoever failed the exam will have to skip training camp and live in summer school hell." He takes a panicked breath in. "We didn't pass the practicals, so we're doomed. Don't you get it Midoriya, or did All Might knock all the brains outta you?"

Todoroki and I sit at our desks and watch the chaos unfold. He looks over at me while leaning on his arm. "Speaking of, did All Might knock all the brains outta you?" he asks.

I put my head down on the desk. "No, but my problem is all out of whack today," I whisper into the wood.

"Is it really that bad?" he questions.

"I don't know, you tell me hot stuff!" I put my hands over my head. "See what I mean..." I cry. I look forward a bit, seeing Bakugo's dark glare in my direction. "And then there's that problem."

My dad pulls the door open ferociously. "Once the bell rings, you should be in your seats." The class is completely silent once he enters the room. He gets up to his podium. "Unfortunately, there are a few of you who did not pass your final exams. So when it comes down to the training camp in the woods, everyone is going!" The look on my dad's face is terrifying.

"We seriously get to go to camp?" Kirishima blurts out.

"The good news is that no one bombed the written exam. Five failed the practical badly: two teams, of course, and then Sero failed as well. Allow me to explain. For the practical battles, the teachers made sure to leave a way for the students to win; otherwise, you never would have stood a chance. We were interested in observing how well you worked together and approached the task at hand," my father explains.

"But didn't you promise that the teachers wouldn't be holding back?" Ojiro questions.

"That was just to get you on edge," my father continues. "Besides, the training camp will focus on building your strength. Those who failed need those lessons the most. We were never going to separate you. That was just a logical deception we used."

"You and your damn logical deceptions." Todoroki kicks me in the foot when he hears the comment I made.

Ida jumps up and asks my father whether his lying will make us lose faith in him. My dad answers, "You make a solid point, but I was not exactly lying. Failure is failure. We've prepared extra lessons for the five of you. Frankly, they'll be far tougher than what you'd face at summer school."

With that, the school day continues preparing for our summer trip. Once the school day finishes, our class begins discussing how we are each preparing for the summer camp. We will be gone a full week. I stare at the itinerary. "I can't remember the last time I went swimming, or a place other than my or your house."

"I mean, right now your options are kind of limited, so that makes total sense," Shoto says.

"Blunt as ever I see," I mutter under my breath.

Many of the other students in the class make comments about the different stuff they need. "Guys, since we have the day off tomorrow, I have the best idea," Hagakure exclaims. "Why doesn't class 1-A go shopping together?"

"That's not a bad idea," I say. The rest of the class starts getting hyped about a possible trip together. However, Bakugo does not seem as happy about it.

"That sounds like a terrible idea," Shoto rebuts. When I look back at him, he whispers, "The last time you went to a mall you nearly had a flare up."

I shrug, "Well right now I'm living in a natural state of the in-between, so I might as well enjoy myself." I grab my bag from off the floor. "I'll have to get permission from Dad, of course, but I know he'll be fine with it since pretty much the whole class is going." I poke him in the shoulder. "Are you coming with?"

"No, I'm going to visit my mom before we leave for a week," he replies. He looks at me concerned. "Are you sure you want to go" he asks.

I nod. "I'll be fine. You don't need to worry so much."

"That is exactly why I worry," he says.

For the rest of the day, I try to reassure him I am going to be fine. My dad does not seem to mind, as he wants me to get a few things for him.

The next day, we all meet at the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall. When I approach the group, Mina jumps then says, "Wow, Akira, you really scared me there for a second. You really look like your dad!"

"Man, do Aizawa's just live in black sweatpants and sweatshirts?" Kaminari asks.

Shoto was right, we shouldn't have come. "Very funny, you guys," I roll my eyes as I respond. Members of my class start rattling off the things they need. "Pops says we need a pair of chains and a duffel bag for them, as well as ibuprofen," I mutter. "He said I need to pick up the eyedrops from the physician here and a sharpening kit."

"Wow, Akira, your dad's pretty metal. What does he need all of those for?" Jiro asks. I did not realize how loud I had muttered.

I shrug. "I don't know, but it sounds like a good Friday night." Mineta and Kaminari laugh hysterically, making me regret my joke instantly.

Something makes a chill go up my spine. Dude, what the hell? I think. We're fine.

Something's off.

I squint my eyes in frustration and make a flat face. If you make me have a flare up and prove Shoto right, I will stab our eyes out.

Once all of the groups leave, I am left with Midoriya and Ururaka. At that very moment, I start feeling like a third wheel. "Akira, you need a duffel bag and chains right? I'm looking for heavier wrist weights, so maybe they are in the same place." He turns to the girl between us. "Ururaka, what about you?"

"I mostly just need bug spray," she responds. She seems to get lost in thought, then her face gets red. "Yup, gotta keep those pests away!" she shouts as she runs away.

Well, it looks like I got left with the nosiest kid who knows a bit more than I would like about my secret. Great.

"I guess we should get going then," I try to start a conversation. Midoriya nods and we start heading in a direction.

We walk in silence for a few minutes, before Midoriya pipes up. "Hey, Akira," he says. "Can we talk about our final exam?"

"What... about it?" I ask, then regret immediately. Now it definitely looks like I'm hiding something. Idiot

Midoriya continues to look straight ahead. "Well, it's about what happened to you after we found refuge in the alley." I stop, trying to figure out what to say. Midoriya does the same. "You looked... different... than how you normally do. Your eyes and ears were different, and it looked like you had fangs and claws. You sounded... demonic. What..."

"Oh, it's two students from UA," someone's voice interrupts Midoriya. "I'd like an autograph!" He wraps his arms around me and Midoriya's shoulders. The guy is wearing a hood, so I cannot see his face completely. "Say, you're the one who got destroyed at the Sports Festival, aren't you?" Then he turns to me. "And aren't you Eraser Head's kid? The one who got pulled from the festival."

Asshole. "I mean, yeah," I try to say without an annoyed tone.

"Didn't you both run into the Hero Killer in Hosu too? You're practically famous?!" the stranger exclaims.

"You sure do know a lot," Midoriya tells him, clearly uncomfortable.

"What can I say - I'm just a big fan of you both. I can't believe I'm running into you again," he says. Something about what he says startles Midoriya.

Akira, don't trust him.

Why? What's wrong?

What's wro... You're a vampire. Check his scent, stupid!

When he says that, I take a deep breath in through my nose and freeze. "Tomura Shigaraki." My deeper and demonic sounding voice shocks Midoriya.

"It can't be a coincidence we run into each other twice," the villain continues. "No, no, this feels like destiny." He moves both his hands up to our necks.

I grit my teeth, feeling my fangs erupt from my gums. "Put them away, Bloodsucker." Midoriya sees me with my fangs out, and his eyes go wide. "If you even think about causing me any trouble, the human goes bye-bye." He smiles a bit bigger. "I don't think he can heal just as fast as he's ripped apart, now can he?"

I growl low, but comply with his demands. "From this perspective, it seems we haven't met since the attack on UA. Why don't we spend some time catching up - Izuku Midorya? Akira Aizawa?"

I continue to growl, trying to intimidate him. "Act natural - don't make a scene," he instructs. "I'm just an old friend who ran into you two at the mall."

This is why we should have listened to Todoroki and not gone to the mall. I make an unhappy face. Now is not the time.

"Wipe those looks off your faces. I'm just here to have a conversation is all," he tells us. "A friendly chat. Oh, and of course, if you try to run or fight me in any way, well it'll be fast. As soon as all five of my fingers touch your necks, your throats will be the first thing that denigrates. In a matter of seconds, you'll be nothing more dust and powdered bone." He gives me an evil side eye. "Well, at least one of you will. The other can just heal from it, but not before revealing his little secret to the world."

"If you do that here around all of these people, a hero will come and catch you in no time," Midoriya points out.

"Besides, it would be you against an army of people who would have quirks," I say. "And one of those people will be me and trust me, I will make it painful for you." I make another angry face. "Shit, me and my instincts big mouth..."

Shigaraki laughs, "I don't doubt that, but look at all these sheep." Oh, that's a bad analogy for you. "Any one of them could use their quirk and start a massacre whenever they wanted." I feel a tightening grip on my throat. I make a noise, indicating the loss of breath. "This one right here could kill and eat every single one of these people without a care in the world, couldn't you, Aizawa?" His grips gets tighter. "Isn't that what you want? Blood? Blood that is inside each and every one of these people in this mall." He chuckles, "A little birdy told me you almost failed your final because of your bloodlust. I bet you're still hungry."

I start shaking a bit. "What... the hell... is your point?" I ball my hands into fists.

"They're all here, smiling," he continues. "They think laws and rules protect them, because they assume everyone has their same morals. They're convinced that nothing bad could ever happen to them. After you I could kill twenty or thirty before a pro showed up and managed to stop me, but I feel like the parasite in my left hand would beat me to it." I let out another growl, which is cut short by the lack of oxygen.

Midoriya then jets in, "I get it. Let's talk."

"Midoriya," I mutter.

"Akira, relax," he reassures. "It's okay. We'll be fine."

Shigaraki releases my neck a bit more for me to breathe. "Let's go grab a seat and get comfortable, why don't we?"

The three of us walk over to an open area for us to sit in. "I basically hate everything, but the Hero Killer pisses me off the most right now," Shigaraki explains to us once we get comfortable.

"Isn't he one of your guys?" Midoriya questions.

Tomura Shigaraki answers, "Not technically, but that's what the media made it look like. And that's what my problem is. It's like suddenly everyone is obsessed with the stupid Hero Killer." My mind flashes back to Stain nearly staking me with his knife after he killed the Nomu. "The attack on UA, the Nomus I released on Hosu, even the Tartarus breakout - he upstaged all of it. No one's even giving me a second thought."

I'm going to kill him and enjoy every drop of his tainted blood.

I'm not exactly in disagreement, but we are not in a spot to be making decisions here.

"Despite what he claims to believe, all he really did was try to get rid of whatever things he didn't like." Shigaraki leans closer to my classmate. "What do you think the difference is between us, Midoriya?"

"What's the difference?" Midoriya repeats the question. "I don't understand you: your goals and your villains; I don't agree with anything you do. I don't agree with the Hero Killer either, but I can understand him. At least, sort of. Because he and I have something in common: we were both inspired by All Might. That night, he even saved me from the flying Nomu. He's a maniac, but he doesn't destroy things just because it sounds fun. And when things were looking bad for him, he didn't abandon his mission like you did. Even if the way he acted was wrong, he held true to his beliefs. That's the difference."

Shigaraki takes in his answer, then turns to me. "And what about you, son of Eraser Head? You know, villain to villain?"

Another louder growl leaves my lips. "First of all, I'm not a villain. I'm nothing like you." I stare off into the distance. "Like Midoriya said, I get why people agree with Stain. I see heroes and the hero way of life from my father's perspective. A lot of heroes care about publicity and fame over actually being what a hero is supposed to be. However, unlike Midoriya, I understand you. You're in this for the chaos - but you take things on and tackle them without a backup plan. You're disorganized, and you lack trust within the tighter parts of your organization. What happens to a disorganized group - disbanding and embarrassment."

We both stare at Shigaraki, waiting for his answer. "Ah, I see now. All the dots connected. Why he makes me so angry - why you irritate me so much, Midoriya - everything is connected. It's him. The problem is All Might." Midoriya and I gasp. "Yeah, yeah, that's it. That's the most rational explanation. I didn't see it until it was right in front of me the whole time. What was I worrying about so much? It's simple. He's why these morons are able to smile thoughtlessly!" He tightens the grips on our throats. "They feel so safe because that garbage pro is smiling thoughtlessly too, as if there's no one in the whole world he can't save. Oh, I'm glad we had this chat - I can't thank you enough, Midoriya - Aizawa. I don't need to change my ways at all." Midoriya struggles to grab the hand wrapped around his throat; I hold onto the bench I am sitting on, denting it through the pain. "Oooo, be careful now, you don't want to die now. You don't want everyone to learn a little secret. Do you want all these people here to crumble as well?"

"Deku? Akira?" Midoriya and I open our eyes and spot Ururaka. She says, "Is that a friend?" She stops. "No, that can't be right." We stare at her in horror. "Uh, hey. Let go of them."

"Ururaka, stay back," I tell her.

"Everything's fine," Midoriya says a little louder. "Don't come any closer."

Tomura Shigaraki then takes his hands off of both of us. "I didn't realize you were here with friends, so sorry." He waves his hands back and forth. He brings his voice down. "If either of you try to follow me, I'll get angry." He then stands, and walks away. As he walks, he whispers, "Oh, Akira, your mother says hello and that she'll be seeing you real soon."

My eyes go wide, dark spots immediately clouding my vision. I open my mouth, causing my fangs to be seen by all. "Akira, is everything o..." Ururaka starts to say. Then she sees me and gasps, "What's happening?"

I stand and start running away. I have to get out of here.

"Where are you off to, my son?"

The voice makes me stop in my tracks. It's her. This is our chance. I start shaking, and I hold my head in pain.

I have to do something.

Let me drive! I'll kill her right now!

I only have seconds, so I do the one thing I can think of doing.

Third Person POV: UA

Mr. Aizawa's phone starts to ring. He, along with Principal Nezu and All Might, are in a meeting concerning the training camp. Since he is in the middle of something, he puts it on speaker phone. "Yeah, kid, what's..."

"DAD, SHE'S HERE! I JUST HEARD HER VOICE! MIZUKAGE IS AT THE KIYASHI WARD SHOPPING MALL!"

Aizawa immediately stands up and grabs his phone. "GET TO THE NEAREST POLICE OFFICER! DO NOT LET HER FIND YOU, YOU HEAR ME?!" Mr. Aizawa, along with All Might and the Principal Nezu, run out of the Principal's office and out of the building. When they spot Present Mic and Midnight coming out of their classrooms, Eraser Head shouts, "Someone call Endeavor and Sir Nighteye's agencies! Tokaba Mizukage has been spotted at the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall!"

Not only did Ururaka report the incident with Shigaraki being at the mall, soon the agencies of Endeavor and Sir Nighteye show up on the scene. Each team sweeps the entire mall, but Shigaraki nor Mizukage are found.

Eraser Head and Present Mic are the first two on the scene. Eraser Head spots his son first and runs to him. He collapses him in a hug. "I'm never letting you out of the damn house again," he says. He tries to hold it together, especially since his students are still present.

Akira's POV

I had to go to the police station in order for them to take my statement about the incident with Shigaraki. Shoto had also been called and he was heading over my house at the moment.

When he reaches us, he runs and grabs me in a hug. "Why didn't you listen to me about going to the mall?" he asks, clearly either had been or going to cry. He looks at me with watery eyes, grabbing onto one of my hands.

I reply, "Trust me, had I known this was going to happen I wouldn't have gone near that mall." I rub the hand I have with my thumb.

"Boys, come inside, we should eat and then go to sleep. We have a long few days ahead," my father says.

He is right, so we enter the house immediately. We have a small meal, then go to our separate rooms. Shoto stays in my room, of course. His cot is laid next to mine. My dad let me not sleep in the chains tonight - yay.

Once we are comfortable, Shoto turns and looks at me. Our beds are very close to one another. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Honestly," I reply, "I don't know." I look upwards to look out my wall's window. "I have no idea where she was, but she was there. That is the closest she's been in almost nine years." I look back at Shoto, then down at the bed. "I just... I just can't believe she could have..." My words catch in my throat.

Shoto grabs one of my hands with his, then places his other hand on my cheek. "Hey, everything is okay. You're safe," he exclaims. He tightens the grip on my hand. "I promise I won't let her touch you - ever."

I move into his hand, no matter how much it made my face red. "Thanks, Shoto." I stare at him and smile.

"What?" he asks me after I stared at him for almost a minute.

I smile and shake my head. "Nothing, it's just... I'm happy to have you back in my life again." I squeeze his hand. "I don't know what I would do without you."

"I don't know either," Shoto answers. He moves his hand from off my cheek and rests it right below my chin. "You have no idea how much I missed you."

"I dare to say I disagree," I reply. "I missed you so much more."

"I think we could argue about that for hours," he says with a smile. After another moment of silence, Shoto says, "but I think we should get some rest."

I nod, closing my eyes. "Goodnight, Shoto."

"Goodnight, Akira."

With that, our summer was about to begin. Little did I know that life was about to become a thousand times worse.
