Chapter 4: A Broken Peace

The first wave of planes hit hard. Silver's heart hammered in her chest as she twisted and dove, leaving her back facing the hailstorm of bullets that rained down on the dragons. Cries of pain and roars were thrown through the air. Explosions lit up the sky and different elements lanced across open space, catching planes in mid-air. A few bullets caught her shell, bounding harmlessly off, but she still felt the impact and peeped slightly against it.

Levelling off she grew metallic tail spikes on her tail. She looked up to the sky to see one of the planes flying towards her at quite a substantial speed. She flicked her tail once, sending a storm of spikes towards the plane. They hit their target, but hardly did anything do damage the plane. Growling in annoyance she took a large flap of her wings and sawed once again into the air, turning so she was flying upside down. The plane couldn't follow such a tight turn and sped away, trying to get out of her range. She sent another volley of spikes after it but missed.

She turned quickly to see what was becoming of the rest of the battle. The first wave of planes had passed and it seemed that the numbers of dragons had dwindled slightly. Her father stood out amongst the chaos because he had adopted what Silver liked the call the 'full metal' state. It meant that the metal shell had grown so that it covered his whole body instead of just part of it. Metallic dragons were nearly invincible in this state, but it slowed them down considerably and exhaustion came much quicker.

Silver decided to follow her father's lead however and let her own metal shell expand around her until it encased her whole body. Instantly she felt the extra wait and was forced to flap her wings much harder to keep up in the air. No sooner had she done this then the next wave hit. Bullets rained upwards from the forest from human ground forces that had somehow snuck into the valley while the planes had attacked. The bullets rang harmlessly off the metal shell on Silver's stomach but other dragons weren't so lucky. They cried out in pain as the bullets penetrated scales and disabled wings. Many plunged from the air at the sudden onslaught.

The metallic dragoness felt anger course through her. Who were these people to attack their valley? What had they ever done to them? Tucking in her wings Silver dived down towards the humans below, crashing through the trees without a second thought. She landed on two soldiers who were stalking through the trees towards a downed earth dragon. She whipped out her tail at the other assailants around her, striking them down. She hadn't bladed it so all it did was knock them down, even if it did cause quite a bit of damage in the process. She opened her maw and shot out a stream of liquefied metal towards the soldiers. They cried out as the metal encased and trapped them. She switched her metal stream to a volley of small spikes, which acted nearly the same as bullets, cutting down the rest of the attackers.

Once she was sure they were all dead she took a deep breath and shook herself out. There was blood staining her shell from when she had landed on the two humans. She shivered as she looked around her, looking at the damage she had caused. It was her first time killing an intelligent creature, and the thought of it made her start to second-guess herself. Was what they were doing right? Her answer quickly came as a volley of bullets rang of her metallic shell. Growling she formed a spike on her tail and flung it towards the human without a second thought, impaling him through the heart. Another kill. It was all too easy.

Shivering she trotted through the forest to where she had seen the downed earth dragon. She smiled when she saw him slowly getting up, recovering from the fall. He saw her and nodded a little painfully before hauling himself to his feet and looking to the air. A sudden growl of surprise shot from him as something shot from the forest and towards the green earth dragon. It was red in colour, and before any of the two dragons could react it landed right in between the dragon's horns. He screeched in pain as wires that led from the bottom of the device sunk into his head. Silver roared out her surprise and raced to the dragon to help him but it was already too late and the dragon fell to the ground, unconscious.

Silver turned to see if she could find the hidden attacker and growled. A man revealed himself from the undergrowth. He was different from the other humans she had seen. There was no scent of fear about him and the way he held himself was in a posture of calm confidence, like he wasn't afraid of the far bigger creature in front of him. He also held a strange device in his right hand, which looked like something of a handgun. An angry scar made by a dragon talon stretched down his neck, one he should have died from. As the two made eye contact a dangerous smile lit across his face.

Unease wound its way through Silver as she gazed at the man and for a moment neither dragon nor human moved, both surveying the other. With a snort Silver shook her fear away. He was a human, and no human could match a dragon in combat. With a flick of her tail she scent several spikes his sway, all directly on target, until the man simply stepped to the right. The spikes missed him by inches and imbedded themselves in wooden trees behind him. Before Silver could attack again he brought up the strange handgun, holding it sideways, and hitting a button that wasn't the trigger.

A small yellow circular object shot out from the side of the gun, heading towards her. It seemed to magnetise itself to Silver's shell, and landed on her right foreleg with a dull clunk. The dragoness growled slightly in surprise. The device beeped twice, which was the only warning she had before it exploded. The dragon thrown to the side and into a tree with such force it snapped, falling down over the silver dragoness.

She groaned and tried to get up, but her body hurt all over and he head was ringing. The broken tree didn't help either. She felt her vision go black for a moment, before it cleared. The dragoness whimpered and tried to get up again, but the tree held her down. The sound of footsteps brought her attention and she moved her head to gaze at the human, who was steadily walking towards her with an easy gait. She summoned some liquefied metal into her throat and shot a glob at him, which he easily sidestepped once again. With a yowl she hauled herself up again, managing to lift the tree this time. She threw it to the side and formed a blade with her tail, launching at the man. He moved far faster then any other human she had seen before, jumping out of the way of her talons and ducking under her bladed tail.

Another yellow bomb shot from his gun, attaching itself to Silver's chest. The explosion threw her backwards and she landed belly up to the sky, moaning. Her vision flickered black again as she struggled to regain consciousness.

'No! I will not loose! Not like this,' she mentally roared at herself, before rolling to her feet and standing up shakily.

She glared at the man, charging again, but her strength failed her and she collapsed midstride into the floor, sending up a shower of dust. A strange gurgling laugh bubbled from the man's throat and he turned his gun towards her again. This time he pressed the trigger down on the gun. A device similar to the one that had hit the green dragon shot from it. Wires sprung from the bottom and it landed in between her horns. The wires scratched across her metallic armour, desperately trying to piece it. With a snarl she lashed out with her tail, spearing the device threw the centre and throwing it to the side. It landed a few metres away and didn't move. With a small grin Silver once again hauled herself to her feet.

"You're not going to defeat me that easily," she growled.

The man's eyebrow rose, not at all perturbed by the failure of his strange device. Instead he once again shot a yellow bomb towards her. She tried to hit it from mid air, and missed. The bomb went off on her shoulder, throwing her to the side once again. This time her body refused to get up and she whimpered slightly, trying to recover from the shock. Never had she been hit so hard before. It was only the metallic armour that was saving her now, and she knew it all to well. Before she had a chance to recover another bomb hit her, and she was lifted into the air before crashing back down again. Unconsciousness called to her and her head rung like a bell. Another bomb hit her and once again she was thrown several metres by the explosion. This time she landed on her back and fell into unconsciousness for nearly five second before waking up again, panting heavily as she tried to get her breath back.

A chuckle sounded and she turned her head slightly to look at the approaching man. How had she been defeated so easily? The thought continued to rush through her head as the man walked slowly towards her, but he seemed to be a blur, as well as the rest of the world. And instead of getting clearer all the colours began to merge into a mass.

She couldn't here anything except the ringing and couldn't feel anything except a dull throb that occupied her entire body. She barely noticed the large metallic roar that echoed out amongst the trees or the great crash as several trunks were torn from the ground and thrown towards the man, nor did she notice the great silver mass that landed in front of her in the very embodiment of rage. She did however hear her name roared above the ringing.

"Silver! Get up! Run! Damn it! Run!" Her father's voice broke threw her consciousness.

Her vision cleared up to see Elron standing protectively in front of her, wings outstretched and staring at the dangerous man who had fallen back from the angry father. His smile had widened however, but his gaze had narrowed angrily. He was probably aiming to get Silver before trying to defeat her father.

"Silver! Go! Get out of here. Fly as fast as you can! Go! The valley is lost," he roared.

His words coursed her into action. She got to her feet again and opened her wings, about to take into the air when something stopped her. She couldn't leave her father here, to face this dangerous man alone. She shook herself, getting feeling back into her body and snarling back the confusion.

"Silver go!" cried Elron.

"No, I'm not letting you face this man alone," she yelled back at him, taking a few defiant steps towards the man, who just seemed to be content in watching the two dragons argue.

"Damn it Silver stop being stubborn. Get out of here while you have a chance. Before they get you to," he yelled at her, taking a few steps back to shield her from the man.

"But you can't defeat them all alone!" Silver said.

Elron glanced back at his daughter, and sorrowful expression filling his gaze. Her heart leapt in her chest. He already knew he wasn't going to win, or escape. The valley had fallen. The few dragons that were still alive had fled and Silver and him were the only two left to defend to valley. Even the most powerful dragon in the world wouldn't be able to fend them all off.

"Please, I can't loose you to," he was desperate.

With a silent nod Silver took to the air with a single beet of her wings. A strangled cry from the man that had defeated her brought Elron's gaze back to him. He pointed his gun at the fleeing form of Silver and fired, but Elron leapt in the way, catching the yellow explosive. Unlike with Silver it only caused him to stagger slightly, before turning back towards the man with a growl.

Silver turned and beet her wings harder, letting the metallic armour she had adopted to retract from her lower body, giving her back the speed and agility that she needed to escape. Her speed increased and her view widened as she gazed over the now destroyed valley. Trees were torn up everywhere. Wild fires were spread and mountains had fallen. Liam's hut had been burned down and she could only hope he had survived. The planes in the air instantly targeted her seeing as she was the only dragon still in the sky. Pulling out the last of her strength she increased her speed to the maximum, until only a silver blur could be seen as she shot through the air and over the mountains that had always been her boundary.

As she crossed over the mountain range she couldn't help but think that she had finally got her wish to leave the dragon paradise, but she had never wanted it like this. Not like this. With a heavy heart she flew onward, trying to outpace the planes that would undoubtedly follow her.
