Chapter 23: The Gravity Dragon

The days went by quickly for Silver. Soon they turned into weeks, and then months. It was all the same. Wake up early with a call from Gretta, and then on to a couple of hours with Frezron. After that the dragons went to The School, where they were put through drooling hours of lectures about dragons and the different species that were out their, as well as their abilities, strengths and weaknesses and other miscellaneous pieces of information.

As much as she didn't want to admit it, Silver learnt quite a lot. There were fourteen species of dragons alive at the moment with a rumoured fifteenth. These species were split into three different categories. Energy, Physical and Mental. And each species was considered in a scale from common to practically extinct. Silver herself was surprised to learn that her species fit into the physical category of dragons, and the rarity was practically extinct, being as there were only two known metal dragons in the world.

After a while however it got boring and often times she fazed out of her lessons, becoming lost in her mind. She wanted to create her statues again. It had been so long since she had done something with her powers other then fight. At least she had managed to make her nest.

One thing that made her extremely annoyed however was the fact that she hadn't been able to see her older friends that often. Occasionally Zepos and her managed to get together, but it was often a quick greeting before they were whisked away to their next lesson. She got to see Celestia even less, the light dragon being put through special training somewhere in the mountain. Apparently the rarer dragons got special treatment, once they turned eight anyway. That time was another two months away for Silver.

She sighed as she lay her head down against a soft pillow like thing on a long bed. She was in The Lab part of Sky Mountain at the moment. It was the place where dragons went to get 'studied' by human scientists. The data was then sent to the Chinese Government where it was sorted away somewhere Silver didn't pay enough attention to know about. At the moment she was lying on her stomach with her right wing stretched under a microscope, with an excited young Asian scientist hurriedly scribbled down notes, glancing through the microscope occasionally.

"Amazing," he kept on saying in english, "Simply amazing."

Silver rolled her eyes in response. She wanted to get out of here as soon as possible. She had free time after this was done, for the rest of the day anyway, and she really didn't want to waist the opportunity. She already knew how amazing she was.

"It's like it's alive," the scientist said, taking a longer glance into the microscope then usual.

"Of course I'm alive," Silver couldn't help but say sarcastically.

"No, not you. The metal. It's alive. But that's impossible," the human replied, getting excited again, "It's like a whole different set of... creature. Different from fungi, plant or flesh. It has its own, completely unique, set of cells, different from anything we've ever seen before"

"And why should I care," Silver muttered to herself, studying one of her newly sharpened and trimmed claws.

The scientist didn't here her, "And you control them. Do you think I could grab a sample, just for scientific reasons of course."

"If you can cut a piece off," replied the dragoness.

He nodded eagerly and reached into his pocket, taking out a small knife. He gently pressed the knife against her wing and drew it along, creating an annoying shriek. Silver hissed and drew her wing back and the knife clattered to the ground.

"You really thought that would work?" she said.

"What... I don't understand. That knife is one of the sharpest things known to man."

She sighed, "Here, let me do it."

She formed the end of her tail into a blade and gently pressed it against her wing. She ran it along the edge, cutting off a thin strip of metal from the edge. The metal on her wing instantly rippled, replacing the peace that had been cut off in less then a second. The human watched in pure amazement, before reaching down a picking up the piece of metal that had been cut off. He placed it in a bag.

"Amazing," he muttered, "Simply amazing."

"Can I go now?" asked the silver dragon, eager to leave

"Yes... yes of course," said the scientist, "We'll make an appointment for a later time."

"Of course," Silver faked a smile before getting off the table she had been laying on and quickly rushing out of the room before he could change his mind.

With a small sigh she wound her through The Lab until she got to the hole that lead into The Centre. The Lab was the smallest section of Sky mountain, followed closely by The School. It had taken a while for her to figure out how everything worked, but she eventually found out that the three biggest sections took up the base of the mountain and the smaller two were situated at the top. Most of the mountain had been hollowed out and reinforced with steel to make sure it didn't collapse down on the dragons inside it. It was quite well made really, something Silver doubted she could create even if she really wanted to.

With a grin she dived down the hole, not bothering to open her wings. She was going to enjoy herself for the rest of the afternoon. Maybe even find a place where she could start a new collection of metallic statues. That would be something great.

She came out of the tunnel right above The Centre and opened her wings, taking herself to a stop. It had been so long since she had flown for pleasure. Even back at the farm she had only ever flown when she needed to, spending most of her time on the ground to reducing the risk of being seen. Of course it hadn't worked that well, but she couldn't exactly not fly either.

With a flap of her wings she propelled herself to the large exit of Sky Mountain, looking forward to being in the air again. While they did occasionally go outside during their training, it was a rare thing, so Silver had made a mental note to go out whenever possible. There were boundaries that she wasn't allowed to cross, but that was something she accepted. It still gave her a few kilometres to play.

As soon as she was outside she shot straight upwards to the top of Sky Mountain. The valley around her was quite beautiful. Green trees spread throughout and there was a lake to one side that many dragons went to ever so often. It reminded her of Dragon Valley, though that was a fair bit smaller then this, and was more a line then a circle.

It was a clear day with a chilly wind. A little annoying for flying, especially for a metal dragon, but Silver could make do. She had flown in worse before. As soon as she got to the top of Sky Mountain she folded her wings to her side and let herself fall into a dive. The wind whipped through her wings like a hurricane, forcing the open somewhat. She closed her eyes and smiled. This was what a dragon was supposed to do, not be trapped in a mountain and learning about what was what.

She let loose a small roar before opening her wings a couple of seconds before she crashed into the trees, pulling herself up out of the dive and using the extra speed to cross from the centre of the crater to the edge without even flapping her wings. Laughing to herself she came to a landing on a small ledge at the crater edge. It had been a long time since she had done that.

Shaking slightly with exhilaration she studied her surroundings. There was a small cave to her left, maybe big enough for a single dragon, and a small clearing below her with another body of water. There were no dragons near her, most of them flying around in groups near the entrance of the mountain or hanging out at the larger lake. Shrugging to herself she leapt from her ledge and landed on the edge of the pond shore.

Smiling to herself she slowly walked in. It had been a long time since she had been swimming. Dragon's weren't huge on baths. Flying high above the ground where the wind was wild was usually enough to get rid of any dirt or other things stuck in their scales, but when the opportunity for a bath came up they didn't hesitate.

Silver murmured slightly as the cold water washed through her scales and she shivered slightly, before diving into the water. It was surprisingly deep, deep enough so she couldn't see the bottom. Smiling to herself she swam a bit deeper before coming up for air. A dragon could hold its breath for a fair while, but Silver didn't really want to risk swimming too deep at the moment. Instead she lay in the shallows, enjoying the water.

She was just about to doze off when an unfamiliar voice spoke above her.

"Hello there," it was male.

Silver jumped and growled, looking up at the dragon. At first glance she thought he was a mind dragon, but she quickly realised he wasn't. The blue that mind dragons often had was a little darker on this dragon, and he had a set of spikes running down his back that mind dragons didn't have. Something different then.

She quickly got to her feet, shaking herself free of water droplets and glared at the dragon that had disturbed her rest. It was a gravity dragon, an extremely rare species that fell under the mental category. They were said to be quite powerful, being able to control the effect gravity had on things, but usually weren't much for physical fighting.

"What do you want?" Silver asked, trying not let distaste cross into her voice.

The gravity dragon flew down and landed near her, watching her with an unreadable expression. He was a little large then her, maybe around nine or ten years old, and had the set up of a muscular type dragon. The two horns on his head had been sharpened recently and his scales didn't have a scrap of dirt on them.

"Oh, I saw you fly over here and decided to follow you. We haven't made an acquaintance yet. I thought it was time we did. My name is Gravon," he bowed his head.

"Silver," replied the dragoness, watching the drake with suspicion.

"I know. I don't think I could forget the entrance you made," he grinned, "Apparently you were the leader of that group of dragons."

"I wouldn't call myself the leader. I freed them and they chose to follow me," Silver said.

"Still, it was quite an accomplishment," he took a step toward her.

"That's what everyone keeps saying," she muttered to herself. If this dragon just wanted to congratulate her then she wished would have waited for a later time.

He smiled at her, "So... do you like it here at Sky Mountain?"

She hesitated, "It's alright, I guess."

"Hmm, being bogged down by classes are you?"

"Yes."

"Yeah, they suck. I often just skip out of them and come out here. Much better to be out in the fresh air."

Silver titled her head, "You can do that?"

"Of course. The advantage of being a rare dragon is that they really can't control you. They need you, so they'll do everything they can to keep you here," he said.

"Really?"

"Yeah. I get in trouble so often a normal dragon probably would have been kicked out by now, but being as rare as I am they can't afford to do that."

"Ha," Silver thought through what he had just said, if that was true then maybe she should start making some demands of her own. Like moving out of that infernal cave where the under eight females slept. Maybe to a cave of her own.

"Though with what I've heard about you they probably wouldn't kick you out no matter what species you were. I heard about that fight you had with Frezron, about how you nearly defeated him. The only reason you didn't is because ice is your weakness."

She shrugged, "I was trained by the best dragon in the world, it's really no surprise."

"Your father, right?"

"How did you know?"

"There really is only one dragon that could have trained you to control your powers. Elron's kind of a legend around here. The first dragon to ever escape A.O.D.H, and the first metal dragon. Too bad he's been captured again."

"Yeah," Silver sighed, a little surprised her father was held in such high regard.

"Gravon!" a loud angry voice rung throughout the sky.

The gravity dragon winced and sent an apologetic look in Silver's direction, "Sorry, better go. That's mum. See you around?"

"See you around," Silver replied, watching him as he took the air, flying as fast as he could away from the source of the voice.

She frowned as she watched, trying to figure out what that was all about. He had seemed a little too friendly for first conversations, but then again he could just be a friendly dragon. Some how she doubted it though. Shrugging to herself she decided to worry about it later and lay down in the pond again, letting the water send her back into a relaxing state. She closed her eyes, and slept.
