Chapter 32

3rd person POV:

Ensley couldn't sleep. She was too angry at Micah. She needed to do something to make him pay. She knew that it was wrong, but she couldn't help herself. She had to protect Celestine.

She got out of bed and went to the living, put on her shoes and grabbed her jacket. She left a note for Celestine on the kitchen table:

"I'm going out for a while. I'll be back soon. Don't worry."

She got in her car and drove to Celestine's house. She's sure that fucker is hiding there. Ensley parked down the street and walked to the front door. She rang the doorbell, but no one answered. She rang it again, and then again.

Finally, the door opened and Micah was standing there, looking like death just fucked him over. Good, Ensley thought.

"Ensley," he said. "I'm so sorry."

Ensley didn't say anything. She just walked up to Micah and punched him square in the face, making him stumble back.

She walked into the house and closed the door behind her.

"You asshole!" Ensley said with gritted teeth.

Micah's eyes widened. "I-I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean to hurt her."

"You didn't mean to hurt her?" Ensley said. "You beat her up! You could have killed her!"

Micah shook his head. "I didn't mean to," he said. "I was just angry."

"Angry?" Ensley said. "That's not an excuse for what you did."

Ensley lunged at Micah and punched him in the face. Micah fell to the ground, surprised and dazed.

Ensley stood over Micah and started kicking and punching him. Micah didn't try to fight back, but instead simply curled up into a ball to protect himself, Muttering useless apologies that fell on deaf ears.

Finally, Ensley stopped. She stood over Micah and looked down at him.

"Stay away from her, you hear me?" She growled.

Ensley turned and walked away. But before she can get out the door, Micah's voice stopped her.

"Is she okay?"

Ensley turned back to Micah. She was still breathing heavily from her rage, and her eyes were burning with anger.

"Is she okay?" Micah asked again.

She took a deep breath and tried to calm her anger. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction of seeing her upset. She didn't want to give him any information about Celestine, but she also didn't want to lie to him.

"Yes, she's okay," she said finally. "But she's not going to be okay if you keep bothering her."

Micah's eyes widened. "How bad is it?" he asked.

"She has a concussion and several bruises and cuts," Ensley said. "She's also in a lot of pain."

Micah looked down at his hands. "I'm so sorry," he said. "I never meant to hurt her so badly."

"If you ever come near her again," Ensley said, "I will kill you."

She walked out the door and slammed it behind her. She got in her car and drove away, leaving Micah lying on the ground.

Ensley drove home, her mind racing. She was still angry at Micah for what he had done to Celestine, but she was also worried about her. She knew that Celestine was still recovering from the attack, both physically and emotionally.

Ensley decided to call the police. She wanted to make sure that Micah was held accountable for his actions. She also wanted to make sure that he didn't come near Celestine again.

Ensley pulled over to the side of the road and dialed 911. She explained the situation to the dispatcher and gave them Micah's address.

A few minutes later, a police car arrived. Ensley got out of her car and talked to the police officers. She told them what had happened and gave them a description of Micah.

The police officers said that they would go to Micah's house and talk to him. They also said that they would give Ensley a call to let her know what happened.

Ensley thanked the police officers and got back in her car. She drove home, feeling a little bit better knowing that the police were involved.

When Ensley got home, she went straight to Celestine. Who was still asleep. Ensley sat down in the chair next to her bed and watched her sleep. "It's over now." She whispered.

...

Celestine stirred in her sleep, and Ensley gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face. Celestine opened her eyes and smiled at her.

"How are you feeling?" Ensley asked.

"I'm okay," Celestine said. "Head hurts a little though."

She smiled at Ensley, but then her smile faded when she saw the look on Ensley's face.

"What's wrong?" Celestine asked.

Ensley took Celestine's hand in hers. "I called the police," she said.

Celestine's eyes widened. "What?" she asked.

"For Micah," Ensley said. "I went to your house and beat him up. I told him to stay away from you."

Celestine shook her head. "You shouldn't have done that," she said.

"I know," Ensley said. "But I couldn't just sit here and do nothing."

Celestine sighed. "How...how is he?" She asked.

Celestine asked the question with slight concern, which Ensley picked up on. She knew Celestine had a soft heart for everyone, even Micah who had hurt her.

"He's okay, Celestine. Just a few bruises and scratches," Ensley said, assuringly.

Celestine took Ensley's hand and squeezed it. "Thank you for protecting me," she said.

Ensley squeezed Celestine's hand back. "I'll always protect you," she said.

"I don't want to go to the police station Ens." Celestine said.

"Of course not." Ensley replied, "but are you comfortable with giving a statement? They can come here to the house."

Celestine hesitated for a moment but finally nodded in agreement. "Yeah, okay."

"Okay, I'll be back, I'm just gonna..."

"Sure."

Ensley went back to the living room and sat down on the couch. She put her head in her hands and tried to process what had just happened. She had never beaten anyone up before, but she didn't regret it. She would do anything to protect Celestine.

A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Ensley got up and went to answer it.

Two police officers were standing at the door.

"Ensley Walsh?" one of the officers asked.

"Yes," Ensley said.

"We're here to follow up on the assault report that you filed," the officer said. "Can we come in?"

Ensley nodded and stepped aside to let the officers in.

The officers sat down in the living room and asked Ensley for a statement. She told them what had happened at Micah's house. She also told them about the previous incidents of abuse.

After what must have been a half hour or less, Ensley led the police officers to Celestine's room. Celestine was still asleep, so Ensley woke her up.

"Celestine," she said gently. "The police are here to get your statement."

Celestine nodded and sat up in bed. She looked at the police officers and smiled.

"Hello," she said.

"Hello," one of the police officers said. "My name is Officer Smith. This is Officer Jones. We're here to talk to you about the assault that happened the other day."

Celestine nodded. "Okay," she said.

Officer Smith began by asking Celestine about her relationship with Micah. Celestine told the officer that they had been dating for a couple of years. She said that at first, Micah was very sweet and loving. But the past few weeks, he suddenly became more and more controlling and possessive.

Officer Smith then asked Celestine about the assault. Celestine told the officer that Micah had come drunk to her cousin's house that night and started trying to sleep with her. When she resisted, He then hit her in the face and slammed her to the wall. He continued to punch her until she managed to hurt him enough to escape.

Officer Smith thanked Celestine for her statement. He then turned to Ensley.

"Can you tell us what happened earlier today?" he asked.

Ensley told the officers that she had gone to Celestine's house to look for Micah and beat him up. She said that she was angry at him for what he had done to Celestine, and she wanted to make him pay for it.

Officer Smith nodded. "I understand," he said. "But you shouldn't have taken the law into your own hands."

Ensley nodded. "I know," she said. "But I couldn't just sit here and do nothing."

Officer Smith sighed. "Well, you're lucky that you didn't hurt him more seriously," he said. "If you had, you could have been charged with assault as well."

Ensley nodded. "I understand," she said.

Officer Smith thanked Ensley for her cooperation. He then told Celestine that she would be contacted by the District Attorney's office to discuss pressing charges against Micah.

"Thank you officers." Celestine and Ensley said.

Officer Jones nodded and smiled, while Officer Smith replied, "You take care now girls, we'll handle this."

...

A few hours later, while preparing dinner, Ensley heard her phone ring. She answered the phone and saw that it was the police.

"Hello?" she said.

"Hi, Ms. Walsh," Officer Jones said. "We just wanted to let you know that we talked to Micah. He admitted to assaulting Celestine. He's been arrested and charged with assault."

Ensley sighed with relief. "Thank you," she said. "I'm so glad to hear that he's been arrested."

"You're welcome," Officer Jones said. "We'll be in touch if we need anything else."

Ensley hung up the phone and smiled. She knew that Celestine would be safe now. She went into the living room where Celestine is curled up on the couch, Friends playing on the TV.

"Hey Ce!" Ensley greeted, smiling widely.

Celestine looked up at the voice and smile back at Ensley. "Yeah?" She asked softly.

"Micah's been arrested!" Ensley laugh, coming over to sit next to Celestine.

"Oh." Came the unexpected reply. Ensley stared at Celestine and found a war raging behind her eyes. She knew Celestine is conflicted, afterall, she's been with Micah for years.

"Hey," Ensley said, touching Celestine's shoulder softly.

"I know this is complicated for you," Ensley said gently. "You've been with Micah for a long time."

Celestine nodded. "I don't know what to feel," she said. "I'm glad that he's not going to hurt me anymore, but I also feel sorry for him. I know he didn't mean to do it."

"That's okay," Ensley said. "It's okay to feel both things."

Celestine sighed and leaned her head against Ensley's shoulder. "I'm not ready to face him yet." she said.

Ensley wrapped her arm around Celestine and held her close. "It's okay," she said. "You don't have to."

Ensley and Celestine held each other for a long time. Ensley knew that Celestine was still scared, but she also knew that Celestine was strong. She would get through this.

"Now," Ensley said, pulling away and brushing Celestine's hair away from her face. "How about we watch some more Friends?"

Celestine nodded slowly and cleared her throat. She smiled at Ensley weakly and they went back to watching Friends, eating the dinner that Ensley prepared.

Even though Celestine was still sad about Micah, she knew that she would be okay. She had Ensley by her side, and that was all that mattered.

...

The next day, Ensley went to the police station to get an update on Micah's case. Officer Jones told her that Micah had been charged with assault and domestic violence, and that he would be held in jail for 30 days.

Ensley was relieved to hear that Micah would be held accountable for his actions. She knew that 30 days wasn't a long time, but it was a start.

Ensley went back home and told her the news.

"Micah's been charged with assault and domestic violence," she said. "He's going to be held in jail for 30 days."

Celestine nodded. "That's good," she said. "But I don't know if I want to press charges."

Ensley looked at Celestine in surprise. "Why not?" she asked.

Celestine sighed. "I don't want to see him go to jail," she said. "I still care him."

Ensley understood. She knew that it was difficult to love someone who had hurt you, but she also knew that it was important to protect yourself.

"I understand," she said. "But I want you to know that you have options. If you decide to press charges, I'll be here to support you."

Celestine nodded. "Thank you, Ensley," she said. "I'll think about it."

Ensley and Celestine sat in silence for a while. Ensley knew that Celestine was struggling with a difficult decision. She wanted to support Celestine in whatever she decided to do.
