Runaway Not Stray

The next day you woke up at 12:53 in the afternoon. The sun was gleaming through your curtains and the traffic down below was zooming.

You groaned and sat up on your bed, dangling your feet off the side of the cotton sheets. Eyes downcast to the buzzing cars outside, you furrow your eyebrows and stroke your right hand through you hair.

"Ouch. My head." You said, as a piercing headache makes it way into your skull.

Deciding you needed coffee, you attempt to stand up. When you realize your feet are still blistered, you instead make your way to the bathroom to bandage them up.

Once finished, you then dragged your now healing feet into your kitchen.

Along the way you noticed countless pictures knocked off of the wall and blood smeared on the floor starting at the front door leading into the kitchen.

When you got to the kitchen you saw a few decorations you had on the island knocked over. Ignoring the mess, you walked straight to the coffee machine and made yourself a cup of coffee.

The distinct smell of roasted beans had already begun to cure your headache.

As you stand by the marble island, your mind wonders back to last night. You were so caught up in the moment that you hadn't really thought about the consequences of your actions.

How long would you be able to keep him here without anyone knowing? Where did he come from? From what you saw, no ID bracelet or necklace was around his neck. He didn't even have a real name.

So he was a stray?

You hoped not. You had seen what the government did to strays only one time when you were on your way home from work and it wasn't pretty.

You wondered where they took the male fox looking hybrid after binding him and throwing him like a sack of potatoes into the back of their covert-like SUV.

The warmth of your cup brought you back to reality. You should probably make something for Jungkook to eat. Both his physical and mental state yesterday was not good.

Also, you wanted to be on his good side. His demeanor yesterday was snippy but when you got too close he looked frightened and sometimes even fragile.

You wanted to know more about him and where he came from. You wanted to help.

Giving him a real name was a good start. He seemed to like the name "Jungkook" even though he was in and out of consciousness almost the entire night. Breakfast should be a good start too.

Walking into the guest bedroom with a plate of eggs, toast, and water, you flicked the light on to see Jungkook still fast asleep.

You walked over to the bedside table, stepping around the mess on the floor and set everything down.

Eyeing the room you huffed in frustration. Today was going to be a long day for cleaning.

You decided to start from the front of your coop and end in the guest room as to give him more resting time.

Sweeping through your home, you swept up countless pieces of glass from broken picture frames and decorative trinkets.

You couldn't believe he was able to do so much damage while under so much pain.

Thinking back to the hybrid, you wondered what type of breed he was. He had a long black tail and black ears that sat atop his dark matted hair.

He had to be some type of feline. From the looks of it a black cat. You would ask him more when he woke up. For now you had to wait.

Sweeping through the house, you stop when you see your favorite picture on the floor broken and shattered. It was a childhood picture of you huddled around a campfire with the other children of your orphanage.

You remember that day like it was yesterday. "Sienna," the orphanage you grew up in, had scraped up enough money to host a cookout for the children.

You remember the flames of the bonfire and the crackling sound of the sticks beneath your feet as you ran around with your brother. He wasn't really your brother, but, he was older than you and always looked out for you, so you always considered him as such.

If you could only remember his name. The one thing you remember about your brother before he was adopted, was his calming dimple smile that told you everything would be ok in times of worry.

You heard a crash, bringing you back to reality.

"Jungkook." You place the picture gently faced down on the table it fell off of and raced to the guest bedroom.

When you arrive, you see Jungkook sitting up in the bed holding the glass of water you had left for him. On the floor beside him was the left over first aid supplies from the night before along side an empty plate.

"Are you ok?" You croaked out still having your morning voice.

You cleared your throat and walked over to the side of the bed, picking up the empty plate and placing it back on the bedside table.

"I see you ate everything. That's good." You tried to say in a relaxed manner as to not make the boy nervous.

Eyes tracing the length of the boy, you realized he was quite tall. Definitely taller then you, maybe even Hoesok.

You wondered how the hell you dragged him down so many blocks by yourself.

Your eyes met his face, as he began to cautiously scan your body.

Feeling nervous, you stood up straight eyes falling downwards as you began to fiddle with your fingers.

"Hey." A voice called you.

Looking back towards him he was now staring into your eyes.  Now that it was light outside, the sun coming through the window reflected off of his dark orbs. They were big and mysterious. Almost mesmerizing, they were like looking into a dark-nit stary sky . You couldn't look away. That is until he called you again.

"Hey." He said louder.

Snapping out of your trance, you replied.

"Yes?"

His eyes downcast towards the medical supplies on the floor then back to you.

"I'm sorry for being a burden. I realized sometime last night that you aren't one of the ones sent out for me. Also...for the food and my leg...thank you." He ended, eyes traveling to the glass of water in his hands.

His response had you taken aback. You were shocked that from last night to now his demeanor had changed so drastically.

Last night he barely let you touch him. He was scared and nervous and snippy. But now he almost looked...shy? You didn't really know how to react.

"Umm. Yeah of course. I mean, no problem but, um are you I mean ok?" You said eyeing the bandaged injury on his leg.

Before he could speak you moved towards his injury sitting on the side of the bed. His stance stiffened grasping the glass tightly.

You noticed his posture had changed and quickly stood up again.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you." You projected in a weary voice.

His eyebrows furrowed as his ears pointed straight up.

"I'm not afraid of anything."

You begged to differ. If he saw himself last night he wouldn't be saying that. You decided to keep quiet as you didn't want any unnecessary tension between you two.

"Jungkook." You called out but there was no reply.

"Hey, Jungkook." You said a little louder. This caught his attention.

"What, human."

You were starting to get tired of his mood changes. First he's scared then he's thanking you next he acts like a spoiled brat? What is he bipolar or something?

You took a deep sigh and pinched the bridge of your nose, shifting your weight onto your left foot.

"Listen, Jungkook. I know this isn't the ideal situation for either of us right now, but I just want to help you. I'm not getting anything out of this but a headache so cut the attitude would you?"

Taken aback by your sudden quick sidedness, he relaxed his tense shoulders as his ears unwound into a neutral position.

"You right...I'm sorry. I'm just. I'm not used to the name yet I guess." He shrugged his shoulders and scratched behind one of his pointy ears.

"Would you mind if I took a quick look at your leg?"

He nodded his head slowly and you took that as permission to unravel his bloodied bandages.

When his wound was revealed, you almost couldn't believe your eyes. It was almost half the size it was yesterday.

Looking towards Jungkook you couldn't find words.

"Wha-how did-"

"I'm a hybrid. We heal quickly." He simply stated shrugging his shoulders. You were clearly unaware of this fact because your eyes were still popping out of your head.

"Wha-this-this is amazing! Are all hybrids like this? Is it just you? Maybe it's just cats?"

As you bombarded him with questions as you re-bandaged him. He eyed you with a look that said ,"are you kidding me."

"How do you not know this? Hasn't your hybrid ever been injured before? Speaking of...where is your hybrid. I haven't seen it since I got here. I figured they would smell me out as soon as I came in."

"Oh? Well I don't have one. Never have that's why I didn't know I guess."

He looked surprised for a moment before regaining his composure.

"Wait, you don't? Why?"

"Well...it's difficult to explain. You see a few people in the orphanage I grew up in were allergic to them so we never had any. After that I just..I don't know. I was never to keen on the idea. I see the way some people treat you kind it's just.."

"Awful, humiliating, abusive, cruel?" Jungkook ended your sentence for you with a look of disgust on his face.

"Yeah..." You said feeling sympathetic for the boy.

He stared at you with an unreadable look then finally spoke up.

"You don't seem like them. At least not yet."

"Like who?"

"Every other human I've come to meet."

You wanted to ask him a million questions. Why was he treated so poorly? Where did he come from? Why is he here? Why didn't he have a name?

"Jungkook." He said in a whisper.

"Do you not like that name? We can call you something else if you'd like."

"Jungkook is a name." He continued as you looked at him confused.

Before you could speak he cut you off.

"I've never had a name. At least not one that I can remember."

Your heart broke at the almost depressing tone in his voice and the sorrowful look on his face.

"Do you like it?" You said to try and lighten the mood.

He looked at you in confusion.

"Do you actually care?"

You sighed defeated. "Listen, Jungkook...I'm not sure where you came from, and you don't have to tell me if your not comfortable, but, I'm not like those people you've known. I do care about what you think. If you don't like the name we can change it."

His face showed a look of surprise before turning neutral.

"I...like it." His eyes strayed from yours as his hand hid his face.

Was he embarrassed?

"Cute." You said before you could stop yourself.

He glared at you and you couldn't help but giggle at him.

"I think you should get some more rest. I'll bring you some clean sheets. Also, I think Hobi left some of his clothes here you can use. You can take a shower when you wake up later just don't get your new bandages wet."

You left the room as his eyes followed your figure. He's had a strange feeling about you since last night. At first he didn't think of you as an ally.

He didn't have any friends besides the other hybrids that were kept with him. Even then he wouldn't really call them his friends. Just some similar creatures in passing who's ID numbers he was familiar with, and his roommates who he considered his brothers.

When he had first met you he thought you were one of those humans that stuck him with needles and forced pills down his throat. The ones that struck him if he did something wrong. But, after he was able to regain some of his senses, he realized you definitely weren't them. You didn't wear the white lab coat nor did you have a clipboard that held the hybrids information.

From what he saw you were trying to help him. He's never met anyone like you before. Probably because he doesn't remember anything before the facility he came from.

He wasn't 100% sure if you had good intentions yet, but for now he'd let you help him until he was ready to get up and leave.

Not that he knew where he was going. He's never escaped before. However, maybe he could get some information about the surrounding area from you.

Wait. You. That's all he knew. Was that you were some girl who's bed he was sleeping in, and who's food he ate, and who's water he drank, and soon who's shower he'd be using.

"I'm back." Your voice snapped him out of his daze as he looked towards it.

You peeped you head into the room and placed some items by the desk near the door. "Here's some fresh towels and sheets. Also, I found some of Hobi's clothes. You can wear them when your done showering."

"Who's that? I thought you didn't have a hybrid." Jungkook spoke.

"Who? Hobi? Oh that's my best friend you'll meet him eventually."

Jungkook's eyebrows raised. "He's your friend? Your friends with a boy? Best friends?"

You giggled again at his questions. "Yes Jungkook, it's ok if boys and girls are friends. Even best friends."

There it was again. You called him Jungkook. But what should he call you?

"Girl." He said gripping his water tightly. "Umm. Well...you gave me a name but, you never gave me yours."

He didn't know why he became nervous. Maybe he didn't want you to think he was rude or put you in a bad mood especially since last night. He didn't want you to kick him out since you were feeding him and giving him clean clothes.

He began shaking his foot in anticipation. He shouldn't have asked you. That's to personal. Were you mad at him? Shit he was gonna get kicked out. He knew he would eventually but to be honest he needed more information before you-

"Y/n." His foot stopped shaking and he looked at you with wide eyes.

"Y/n." He repeated. He liked the way your name sounded as it glided off of his tongue.

"Yeah! I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself sooner. I guess I was just caught up in everything else that I forgot." You smiled and continued speaking. "Anyway, Jungkook, get some rest I'll check up on you later. Then maybe you could answer some questions."

You ended, leaving the room to let the cat think about the events of the past few hours.

What questions would you ask when he was ready? He understood that it was only natural to be curious. Especially for humans.

He also had questions for you. Like why you were helping him, and what price he had to pay for your hospitality.

For now he decided to rest. The clean sheets were across the room with the towels and clothes he was supposed to wear. He decided to wait until after he was clean to use the new sheets.

In under a few minutes he had fallen into a slumber again.

When he woke up what felt like an eternity later, the sun was setting outside of the white molding of the large window beside him.

He squinted his eyes awake and stretched similar to how a cat would. He sat up straight and rubbed his eyes awake. Upon opening them, he came to realize the supplies from the night before were gone along with the blood that had stained the walls.

"Y/n must have done this." He whispered to himself in a groggy voice.

Swinging his legs over the side of the bed, he attempted to stand for the first time since the night before. He swayed at first, but eventually regained his stance.

Taking his first few steps, he mumbled profanity's under his breath as he limped over to the clean clothes and towels.

"Ugh dammit. We heal fast but that doesn't mean this shit doesn't hurt." Taking the items in his hand, he realized you had never told him where the bathroom was.

He decided to search for it as he slowly limped out of the guest room. His feet touched the hard wooded floor in a few steps. Contrary to the soft carpeting of the bedroom, he liked the cool feeling on his feet.

"Umm. Y/n? Are you there?" No answer was heard. He decided to walk further straight. He hadn't had a chance to really look at the environment surrounding him last night as he was to busy trying to get away.

The pictures that were broken from the other night had been placed into newly bought frames. His eyes scanned countless pictures of you with other people. Maybe family members? Some of just you and a boy and some of just others. He realized the mess was now cleaned and the home looked spotless.

"Y/n?" He called out again.

He continued to walk through the home until he reached the living room.

"Wow." He said as his mouth hung open. He hadn't realized how nice your place actually was until now.

He stopped walking when he got to a table near the front of the room. He placed his hand down to lean on the table but stopped when he touched something.

"Another picture? How many do you have human? Did you forget to put this one up again?" As he was about to flip it over, a soft snore stopped his movements.

His head whipped around to face the large leather couch where he found you were peacefully sleeping.

You must have been exhausted from the past 48 hours.

He walked carefully over to your sleeping figure until he was hovering over you.

Jungkook has never really gotten the chance to look at you. Really look at you. Now that he was, he couldn't look away.

He traced your jawline with his eyes. Next your long lashes and the way your small hand clutched the throw pillow you were so desperately holding onto. He saw how your legs curled up into your body, making the comparison to that of a cat. He also noticed how big your feet were for such a small human.

He chuckled to himself for about half a second before he continued his search for the shower.

A few minutes of searching led him to the bathroom. He walked in as the cold blue tile graced his feet. Shivers flowed through his tail as it shook straight up.

He walked over to the large curtain in the back left corner of the room. Slowly pulling it back, he realized he had never actually seen a shower like this before.

In the facility, they had silver heads where the cold water fell from and a button underneath that started and stopped the flow.

However, now in front of him stood what looked like a large door handle with a line of red and blue.

"A door knob? With, red and blue..."

Extending his left arm, he grasped the knob.

"Red or blue?" He questioned. After a few seconds of debating, he chose red.

Turning the knob to the left, water immediately started to flow from the above faucet.

"Nice." Jungkook limped over to the counter and placed the items he was holding down.
Slowly, he removed his blood stained ripped clothing, wincing as his pants fell down his injured leg.

Turning around, he limped over to the other end of the shower and slid the curtain open. When he entered the shower, he was presently surprised and how nice the water felt.

"It's...warm." He inched under and let the soothing water coat his ears and tail. Jungkook usually hated shower, being the cat he is. Especially the cold ones at his old facility. But this, this felt nice.

A few minutes turned into almost an hour as he found a honey vanilla scented soap wash to clean himself off with. Finally, finished with scrubbing his rough skin and matted fur, he hesitantly turned the water off and stepped out to grab a towel to dry off.

He hadn't noticed the mirror before, and he's glad he didn't. Right now he looked clean, even with a few red marks, his already well know scars, and the dark bags under his eyes. Before he must have looked atrocious.

After he was completely dry, he grabbed the clean clothing you had given him and put it on. Although the dark gray sweatpants fit, the black shirt had been a little to tight. But hey, anything was better then the muddied blood stained clothes he was wearing before, and even though the pants weren't specifically made for a hybrid, he still had room to tuck his tail inside of them comfortably.

He had wondered how he got so fortunate to find you. Well, maybe not fortunate since he still was unsure of your intentions, but, definitely lucky to be fed, bathed, and hidden.

He didn't know where to put the items, so he left them in the bathroom for now.

Deciding on wether he should go see if your awake or not, the choice was taken from him when you spotted him walking through the hallway.

"Jungkook." You said sleepily. "How are you feeling? You look a lot better." You lazily walked toward him rubbing your eyes having just woken up from a four hour nap.

The feline had started to feel slightly guilty about his situation. You looked exhausted, even more so than him. He realized that you had been fully treating him and taking care of him by yourself ever since you found him, and he wasn't very kind to you.

"Feeling better." He mumbled out.

"And your leg? Let me see."

He slowly lifted his pant leg to reveal dry bandaging.

"Nice job in keeping it dry. It looks good."

You looked up at him as he released the sweats.

"Alright. We need to talk. Now." You said sternly as you turned around and headed towards your living room.

He took that as a sign to follow, as he slowly treaded behind you.

Sitting down on your couch, you waited for the boy anxiously.

He limped into the living room, ears pointed and alert. He was nervous for some reason. He knew you were going to ask questions, and if you didn't like the answers he would likely be kicked out to be vulnerable on the street.

Jungkook gulped and kept his distance from you still standing, until you motioned for him to sit. When he did he was presently surprised when he found it to be comfortable, contrast to its hard leather exterior.

You both stayed silent, sitting on opposite corners of the L shaped couch.

"So...Jungkook. Before I ask you any questions,  I want you to know that I'm not going to hurt you or report you to the SHA. I just want to know more about who I'm helping."

The SHA, or the Stray Hybrid Association, was a government run program that captured stray hybrids. What they are supposed to do, is help the hybrids find new homes.

You've heard horror stories about them from Hoseok. They supposedly take the strays to the hybrid pound and put them down within the first week if they can't find a home. A sickening thought to someone like you.

Society has been split in two ever since you could remember. The rich side, and the poor side. Often times growing up in predicaments like yourself, success is rarely ever feasible. Lucky for you, you studied hard and worked yourself up to a great position.

Usually the side enriched with money, would never step foot into a pound, rather having a purebred. Meaning the strays rarely ever make it.

You didn't know what would happen to Jungkook, or yourself for that matter if you were caught shielding him, but, you wanted to take the risk. You knew what it was like to feel helpless and alone you could only imagine with the stray was feeling at this moment.

The hybrid kept quiet, waiting for you to speak again.

"So. I guess we'll start off with something small. How old are you?"

He raised an eyebrow at the personal question. You figured if you started small he would eventually start to warm up to you.

"23." He mumbled.

From his baby face, you thought he would be younger, so you were surprised to find he was only a year younger than you.

"I'm 24." You said back. "Your turn." You continued.

He raised his eyebrows, surprised that he got a turn. Quickly turning to a neutral position, he thought of what to say.

"You said you came from an orphanage. How did you wind up here?" Obviously talking about your success, you begin to tell him your life story and how you got to where you are today.

He seemed to relax a bit as you continue to talk about your life at the orphanage, your studies, and your career.

"My turn." Jungkook gulped. He had began to lose his stance as you talked comfortably with him. Now, he had to be on his guard and watch what he said around you.

"Tell me about your life Jungkook. It's only fair since I talked about mine."

He could definitely see that you were a lawyer. He hadn't even noticed you were setting him up. Kudos to you.

The feline sighed and scratched the back of his ear. Something you noticed he did when he felt worried or flustered.

"I'm not a stray." He started and you were taken aback. "I...I ran away."

Millions of thoughts went through your brain before you spoke.

"What? You come from an abusive home then? We can report them! Do you know your address?" You clenched your fists as anger flowed through your veins. "How can someone treat someone so, so horribly..."

You looked back towards Jungkook awaiting a response.

He had an unreadable expression as he sighed again. "No. I didn't come from a home exactly."

You finally unclenched your fists confused at the boys words.

"A pound? Did you come from a pound?" Your words passed your lips with a voice of confusion.

"No. A facility. A facility that does experiments on my kind." His eyebrows furrowed in anger at the memory. His tail started to make its way out of Hoseok's gray sweatpants, swaying back and fourth as his fists clenched.

Your eyes widened in horror. "A-A what?" You were shocked to say in the least. "Your joking...right?"

His expression told you he in fact was not.

Thinking back to everything that's been said in the past few days, you started to believe him.

"So then...that explains the fact that you don't have a name, and when I tried to give you pain medicine you knocked it out of my hand, and you got frightened when I...What did they do to you?"

You looked at him with an expression of concern. Waiting for an answer, you stood up and walked over to the cat sitting down next to him.

He looked up into your eyes with broken ones.

"I-I just." He started with a shakeup breath. Putting his head down into his hands, you noticed the boy started to shake.

You didn't want to frighten him in anyway, but, you wanted to comfort him.

Slowly, you moved your left hand to the small of his back. He jumped slightly, but, when he realized you meant no harm, he relaxed into your hand.

You begin to rub his back up and down until his breathing was back to normal.

"Hey, Jungkook. That's enough for tonight. You don't have to speak anymore." You said quietly.

He shook his head and removed his hands from his face sitting up with a distant look in his eyes.

You now know why he was so afraid when he came into your home.

Taking a few seconds to think to yourself, you finally came to a conclusion. "Jungkook. I promise on my life I won't let them hurt you." You said looking at him with determination.

He looked back at you, shocked to hear your words. He searched through your eyes and found nothing but truth.

You smiled warmly at him and stood up offering him your hand.

"Come. Let's get you to bed."

Slowly he raised his hand to meet yours. They felt warm. Like your promise.

Hello hello! Sorry for the wait! I hope you enjoy! Things are just getting started. Don't forget to let me know what you think! Happy reading!
