Ode to Sleep

When I drift off to my sleep,

I forget the world.

I get to keep and keep

The best gifts of my sleep.

I drift off in darkness

For a very little while,

Then I wake up to

A place where I

See you and me

In serendipity,

In a time of frozen bliss,

In a wonder I will miss

When I wake up to the day

And pretend I'm okay.

We'll stroll around the parks,

We'll roll around in meadows,

And climb the happy willows.

We'll take in the scent

Of the sweetest-smelling flowers;

Those appealing to the senses

Of unforgettable romances.

I will feel your arms around me;

You'll whisper near my ear

That we'll forever be.

We will laugh, and we will sigh;

We will never say goodbye.

But then in timeless time,

Your vague hands set me free.

Then I wake up once again

To my own misery.

I know he won't be mine;

I know I won't be fine.

I have to fake a smile

Once more, for quite some time.

Still, I thank my sleep.

At least I get to keep

Memories worth recalling

And moments worth reminiscing.

Sleep is exactly where

You'll show me that you care;

The love I'll never feel

In the world of all that's real.
