Chapter 23

It had been about twenty minutes since the coronation and Rowan had decided now was a better time than ever.

He went over what he was going to say one last time before he left his spot on the chair next to her in the crowd of people.

The steps onto the stage were probably the slowest steps he's ever taken.

"Can I have the spotlight for a moment please?" He asked the orchestra who was playing a beautiful medley for the new king and queen.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

As they walked off the stage the crowd went quiet and Aelin raised a brow at Rowan, he winked back.

"Excuse me, Terrasen. May I have your attention?" He didn't even need to ask, for the castle was quiet save for a few murmurs.

"The first time I met you, you stuck your tongue out at me. And I hated your guts."

Aelin chuckled at that. Her eyes glowing.

"And then we started training and I realized so soon that I couldn't stand to be away from you. That you made me feel so alive, so comfortable is something not many could do before I met you."

"And the day you freed me from...her," he said tightly. "You gave me a whole new perspective on life."

"When you were taken. I didn't remember how to breathe. I couldn't be myself without you."

Rowan paused to look at Aelin, who had shadows in her eyes.

"Your wicked grin sends me into a frenzy, your eyes make my heart swell. You make me so happy and I don't know how to ever repay you. I will do my best to make you and our children happy."

"I know I already have the honor of calling you my wife. But Fireheart, will you do me the honor of doing it properly? Marrying you in front of our court?" Aelin grinned so wide her cheeks hurt. She started walking on stage.

Rowan lent her a hand in climbing the steps on the platform.

"Say it, Buzzard."

"Marry me, Aelin of the Wildfire."

Aelin kissed him the second he finished that sentence.

"I'd love too," Aelin whispered.

The crowd behind them erupted into cheers. Dorian, Lysandra, Chaol, Fenrys, Elide, and Gavriel clapping the loudest.

Rowan knelt down on a knee as he opened the velvet box.

Another tear fell on Aelin's cheek as she beheld the ring in the box.

A beautiful emerald surrounded in white diamonds lay in the box. Rowan took it out with his tattooed hand and slid it on Aelin's left ring finger.

"I love you more than life itself Rowan," Aelin choked out through her stream of tears.

He smiled, canines on full display as he stood up and held her face in his hands.

"To whatever end."

Author's Note - I haven't been consistent and I doubt anyone cares and no one's probably reading this but I am sorry and will make up for it.
