Episode 2: That One Strange Cat

The next day had arrived faster than anticipated. In the center of the island a door opens and another critter steps out; holding a clipboard and pen with one hand. With his free hand the critter closes the door and locks it. He's all set for another day of work now. The critter leaving his house is a purple cat. This critter isn't a part of the Smiling Critters friend group, but he has seen the group move in yesterday.

When the critter landed his feet on the ground, he held onto his pen and opened his mouth a bit. With his purple tail extending on its own, he threw the rope ladder back up to the house. He couldn't risk having another critter break into his house.

The cat critter had decided to introduce himself to his new neighbors and tell them his occupation. It's part of his job, but not just any regular job. He started with the honey igloo. It wasn't a long walk to get there. When he arrived, he cleared his throat and quickly rang the doorbell.

Inside Bobby is on her phone looking for more artists for her secret shipping shrine while preparing some toast for breakfast when she heard a knock on the door. She looked up from her phone.

"Who could be ringing this early?" Bobby asked herself. "I'm sure I didn't hire any artists yet for my Kickin loves Hoppy ship."

Bobby walked toward her door. She looked out the window and saw the purple cat. She thought he was creepy because he spotted Bobby looking out the window and gave her a slow wave. This made Bobby shudder and look away from her window.

'That was scary.' Bobby thought fearfully. 'Why would this random critter be staring at me through my window like that?' She then let out a tense sigh. 'Okay, don't panic just yet Bobby. Just open the door, find out what this critter wants, then close the door and keep on looking for artists. Simple.'

Outside the cat critter felt a sense of disappointment. He didn't mean to scare the bear critter. He let out a sigh and turned to leave. Behind him looks like a blue Summer house. The cat critter settled on that being his next stop.

Before the cat critter had a chance to leave, he heard the door open. He turned back and saw the bear critter had opened the door and looked at him with unease.

"C-Can I help you?" the bear critter asked.

"Oh! Uh..." the cat critter trailed off. He cleared his throat before continuing. "Good morning miss. My name is CatNap, and I would like to welcome you to Critter Valley. It's a very big island and it is really nice. You'll find lots of company all around you."

Bobby glanced away from CatNap briefly; feeling oddly uncomfortable about this. "Uhh, thanks?" she asked.

"Sure. Anyway, I'm Critter Valley's sleep therapist." CatNap continued. "What I do is help critters fall asleep and I watch them to ensure that they have a peaceful sleep."

"You WHAT?!" Bobby shouted in fear. "Uh, look I'm sorry but I do not want some random critter come up to me and tell me they watch me fall asleep. That's just creepy." She then slammed her door shut and locked it.

CatNap sighed again, wrote on his clipboard then slipped a piece of paper in Bobby's new mailbox by the fence. It was CatNap's business card containing his information. He thought Bobby could use it just in case.

On to the next stop as he intended.

CatNap walked towards the blue house and rang the doorbell.

Bubba was drinking his coffee while reading a Science Fiction novel when he heard his doorbell ring. Bubba was confused. He hadn't ordered anything yet. It was only day two of living in his new house.

Regardless, he decided to answer the door. Maybe it might be a neighbor or one of his friends stopping by for breakfast. It wouldn't hurt to give his friends or new critters a warm welcome and offer them some breakfast.

He answered the door.

"Good morning sir." CatNap repeated. "My name is CatNap, and I'm Critter Valley's sleep therapist. My job is to ensure that every critter living in Critter Valley sleeps soundly by watching them, and if you have any sleeping problems just give me a call." He hands Bubba his slip.

Bubba takes the card and observes it. "I don't have any sleeping problems, but-" He cut himself off when CatNap had disappeared. He closed his door slowly.

"That guy was really weird." Bubba said to himself. "Hopefully I won't have to encounter him again."

Meanwhile PickyPiggy is eating the one thing she considers her favorite food, but never told nor revealed to the Smiling Critters; PB&J sandwiches. She had brought her sandwich ingredients with her during her move, and good thing everything remained intact. Picky held up her sandwich, opened her mouth and prepared to take a bite.

Before she could though, Picky heard her doorbell ring. She quickly hid her sandwich in her microwave in her utensil drawer and hurried to the door. She opened it to see CatNap.

"Good morning miss..." he paused when he saw Picky was breathing heavily. "Was I interrupting something?"

Picky quickly shook her head. "Nope!" she answered. "You haven't interrupted me at anything. Can I help you?"

CatNap shook his head. "Nuh uh, I'm good. Anyway, my name is CatNap and welcome to Critter Valley. I'm a sleep therapist who lives at the very center. How I do my sleep therapy may be weird, so I'll just hand you this. This card has everything you need to know about my occupation and what I do." He hands Picky his business card. "If you need any help with sleep, just call at this number. Have a good day." He closed the door for Picky then left.

Picky looked at CatNap's business card. "Well, that's nice...in a way." Picky said to herself.

CatNap was on his way to the next house; Hoppy's house.

"You know what?" he asked to no one in particular. "I like this tactic. I'll try that instead. Quick and simple."

That's what CatNap decided to do when he arrived at Hoppy's carrot house.

Hoppy is taking her yoga mat out of her basement and into the living room. She found space on the floor beside the coffee table and laid it on the floor; spreading it out a bit. She had gotten a quick breakfast before heading off to take out her mat.

Today is yoga day for Hoppy Hopscotch.

She brought her phone and earbuds for some yoga music. Before she could turn them on though, Hoppy's doorbell rang. With an annoyed sigh, Hoppy took off her earbuds and stood up. She answered the door and was a bit surprised to see that it wasn't any of her friends that decided to drop by.

"Good morning miss." CatNap repeated. "My name is CatNap, and I would like to welcome you to Critter Valley. I'm-"

CatNap was cut off by Hoppy slamming her door shut. To Hoppy, what this strange new critter is telling her is something unimportant. She has no reason to have a sleep therapist.

'Weirdo.' Hoppy thought bitterly as she returned to her yoga mat.

CatNap stood in front of the door dumbstruck by Hoppy's slamming.

"Well that was rude." CatNap said to himself as he walked away. He took out his business card and put it inside Hoppy's mailbox.

Three houses left. Just three houses left and CatNap is done with the introductions.

CraftyCorn already had her breakfast too and is continuing moving her furniture. She had plugged in her TV, and positioned her couch in front of it. She even moved the coffee table in between.

After moving the table, Crafty dusted herself off while trying to catch her breath again. While calming down her breathing Crafty heard her doorbell ring. She wasn't expecting company this early though.

Deciding to wonder who's ringing her bell, Crafty took an elevator down to the door and answered it.

"Good morning miss." CatNap repeated again. "My name is CatNap and I would like to welcome you to Critter Valley. I'm the island's sleep therapist and what I do is help critters fall asleep and watch over them to ensure they sleep soundly. It's weird, but that's how my job works."

"Actually, that's nice but this is pretty weird that you're telling me this." Crafty said nervously; about to close her door.

CatNap nodded. "I understand, but in case you have any sleep problems or whatever," He handed Crafty his business card. "here's my business card. Have a good day."

CatNap then took his leave while Crafty looked at the purple cat a few more seconds before closing her door and taking the elevator back up. He glanced up at his second last two stops; the chicken coop house and the huge doghouse. He darted back and forth contemplating on which house to go to next. It may be his instincts, but CatNap shuddered in fear at the sight of that doghouse. Who knows what kind of critter would live at that house?

And who knows how hostile they would be?

CatNap decided to go for the chicken coop. He can save the doghouse for last.

Since everyone is still adjusting to their new houses before going out to do their regular activities, Kickin has his TV on and is watching a football game. He's even wearing a football jersey for this very occassion. The football jersey the chicken is wearing is a red jersey, so he's cheering on for the red team.

Kickin cheered in victory when he watched his favorite team score another touchdown, but his cheering was cut off when he heard his doorbell ring. Kickin was annoyed. He never likes being interrupted when he's watching a sports game on occasional lazy days.

He begrudgingly turned down the TV's volume a bit on his remote and stood up from the couch. Kickin grumbled to himself as he opened his door, and they stopped when he noticed CatNap at his door.

With sharp hearing, CatNap could hear Kickin's TV a bit; but he decided to keep professional and cleared his throat. His eyes started drooping a bit from all the interactions he had; even if they are short.

"Good morning sir. Since you are probably...busy, I'll make this quick." CatNap introduced again for the sixth time in a row. "My name is CatNap, and I would like to welcome you to Critter Valley. I'm Critter Valley's sleep therapist and-"

"Yeah, don't care. Have a nice day or whatever. Now can you leave me be in peace you creep?!" Kickin waved a hand with annoyed disinterest before slamming the door; startling CatNap.

"Well, since he may have woken up angry." CatNap said to himself as he put his business card through Kickin's mailbox. "I'll count on having some phone calls from him when he sees my card. Alright, last house and I can go home."

CatNap started to instead of walking slowly trudge to the doghouse; his instincts forgotten at this point. Maybe it's the tiredness CatNap's starting to feel. After all, CatNap does not leave his house that often. He usually sleeps through half the day. He isn't named CatNap for nothing.

It was slow, but CatNap forced his eyelids to open fully to see the huge doghouse. He took in a breath, walked to the front door and rang the last doorbell.

"Oh, someone's ringing!" an excited voice shouted from the other side. That was as far as CatNap could tell. "Maybe it might be the gang. Maybe we can go to the furniture store together!" The voice came closer until the door opened to reveal DogDay. That left CatNap actually a sense of familiarity this time, but he cleared his throat for the last time.

"Good morning sir. Sorry if you're busy, but I'll make this-"

"Wait, that lavender scent...CatNap?!" DogDay asked in bewilderment. His tail wagging in excitement.

Oh. Now it all comes back to CatNap. He recognized that vanilla scent anywhere back when he was little. "Oh wait, DogDay?" the purple cat asked in confusion.

CatNap was then caught off guard when DogDay gave him a surprise hug. The purple feline stumbled back a bit.

"Oh my gosh! CatNap! I haven't seen you since we were so small! I didn't know you've moved in too!" DogDay said excitedly. "You know you could've moved in with me."

"I already lived in Critter Valley about a year ago before you and six other critters did." CatNap deadpanned.

DogDay's ears perked up. "Critter Valley? Is that the name of this island?" DogDay asked in anticipation.

"Yes." CatNap answered. "Anyway, I'm Critter Valley's sleep therapist and I want-"

DogDay let go of CatNap and put his hands on his mouth stifling a giggle.

"No offence CatNap, but I thought you would still be in your band with your older brothers. 'MoonBeam', remember?" DogDay pointed out. "Ooh hey, why don't you come on in? We have a lot of catching up to do since we last talked."

CatNap's eyes darted away from DogDay back to his tower home. "Uhh, actually I was planning on heading back home afterwards for-"

DogDay however grabbed CatNap's arm and pulled him inside the house. He let go of his wide eyed purple friend and closed the door behind him.

"Come on Nap, I insist." DogDay pleaded "Everyone else is still adjusting to their houses before we do anything else." The sunny canine then gave him anyone's biggest weakness: the puppy eyes.

CatNap tried to resist, but how can he with those puppy eyes. He wasn't much of a match. He sighed and slumped his shoulders. "Okay, we can hang out together." he said with a smile.

DogDay's eyes sparkled. "Yes!" he cheered. CatNap chuckled at DogDay's excitement.

That was how the morning went for the two friends. They talked about their lives going forward since middle school. CatNap left his brothers' band "MoonBeam" at the end of high school to pursuit a career as a therapist. He even told DogDay the good news about his purple lavender smoke: the purple smoke is now under control.

In their youth days, CatNap and DogDay would always turn in for the night early due to the uncontrolled purple smoke. It wasn't harmful, but it could put others around him to sleep. CatNap's seven older brothers are immune to CatNap's lavender smoke, so they would have an easier time with helping CatNap control his smoke.

It took about thirteen years to have the purple smoke fully controlled.

Meanwhile on DogDay's part of the conversation, he talked about his thirteen sisters from his litter, his friends the Smiling Critters and how he met them. Starting with his sisters; they are healthy and are high schoolers/college students/working at jobs after college.

However, DogDay's oldest sister had picked up a habit of smoking; something he doesn't approve of. The smoke has more of a vanilla smell though, but still.

DogDay then moved on to how he met the Smiling Critters. He met Crafty, Bobby and Bubba in middle school and Kickin, Hoppy and Picky in high school. He even told CatNap what they looked like.

CatNap's eyes widened in shock, then he started coughing and hacking.

"C-CatNap, are you okay?" DogDay asked worriedly as he stood up from the couch quickly.

CatNap couldn't answer. He kept coughing and hacking. Wanting to help out his old friend, DogDay walked towards CatNap and slapped his back as hard as he could. The purple feline dry heaved a hairball out.

It landed on the floor.

CatNap coughed a bit more and looked at the hairball, then glanced at DogDay. He hung his head low shamefully.

"Sorry about that." CatNap apologized as he picked up the hairball. "I'll throw that away."

The purple feline entered the kitchen. He threw the hairball into the garbage and washed his hands. Too bad there's no lavender scented hand soap, so he'll just have to stick with the vanilla scented hand soap.

CatNap didn't notice DogDay come over towards him as he was washing his hands. He did notice an orange paw on his shoulder. He glanced at DogDay giving him a reassuring smile.

"It's okay CatNap." he said. "These things happen."

CatNap smiles and returns to washing his hands. When he was done, DogDay handed CatNap a towel to dry the purple hands off. The two critters returned to the couch; this time with friendship cuddles. It was also something the two critters did back when they were small.

Still, it was unbelievable CatNap had met all of DogDay's new friends just like that.

DogDay glanced at his clock behind him and saw it was noon. He looked at the cat whose eyes were closed and is purring. He caressed CatNap's cheeks in an attempt to wake him up, but without success.

"Hey kitty," DogDay cooed. "are you hungry for food? I can order us some pizza if you want."

CatNap's eyes opened up a bit and he nodded. "Yeah." he mumbled. "I like that puppy. No desserts. I dun want desserts."

DogDay chuckled at CatNap's sleepy behaviour. "Okay kitty, I'll make sure there's no desserts." he reassured the sleepy kitty. He slowly put CatNap's head on the couch cushions as he reached for his phone on the coffee table. He then put his friend's head back on his lap and dialed the number to the pizza place.

CatNap sleepily mumbled the number to DogDay before making the call.

Thirty minutes later while waiting for their pepperoni pizzas to arrive, the doorbell rang the second time that day. CatNap was fully asleep at this point. DogDay once again carefully got off the couch and slowly laid CatNap's head down before answering the door.

The pizza delivery critter has arrived. Her name tag reads "Frolic Froggy" (my OC).

"Good afternoon. I'm looking for a Mr. DogDay?" Frolic asked. "Is this the right house?"

DogDay nodded. "Yep, that's me and this is the house." he answered and opened up his wallet. "How much for the pizzas?"

"Oh, that'll be $37.49." Frolic beamed.

DogDay smiled and checked his cash, but was disappointed when he saw he has $17.99 left in his wallet. "Oh, sorry." he apologized. "I don't have enough for two pizzas. I'm ashamed to say I don't even have a job yet."

Frolic gave DogDay a confused look. "Well, what about the sleep therapist?" she asked, pointing beside DogDay. "He's got the rest of the payment it seems."

DogDay looked beside him and sees CatNap's tail extend holding some cash. The dog took the cash and handed the rest to Frolic. The frog smiled and took the cash and handed DogDay the pizzas.

"Thanks for the payment. Have a good afternoon." she said as she took her leave.

DogDay nodded and closed the door. He set the pizza boxes on the coffee table and headed off to the kitchen to grab two plates. CatNap stirred from his sleep and smelled the pizza.

"It smells good!" CatNap tiredly called out.

DogDay returned and set the plates, forks and knives down. "They do, don't they?" DogDay asked. "By the way, how did you manage to pay the rest of the pizza costs? I mean how did you earn this much money is all I'm asking."

CatNap didn't answer immediately. He was quiet for a while before giving DogDay a short answer.

"Sleep therapist is my job? Or maybe I'm just - as many would say - mysterious that way."

Yep, CatNap is certainly one strange cat. That may be something DogDay likes about CatNap as his friend but who knows?

Since DogDay and the other Smiling Critters are living in Critter Valley now, there's definitely a lot more to learn about CatNap and his mysterious ways.

THE END

A/N: supersader9 here. That's the second episode done, and you may noticed CatNap was out of character for this one. That's going to happen in some episodes I think, but I'll make sure to get the character's personality proper in most episodes.

CatNap's out of character personality will most likely be based off of Zane Ro'meave from MyStreet Season 1. You'll see the similarities when you've watched MyStreet episode two.

Now, let's discuss OCs. Do you guys like Frolic Froggy? She was an OC made, but I feel like I copied that idea on DeviantArt. Still, I kept her for this very episode and gave her a clover scent. You'll learn more about her in my third general artbook.

Future Smiling Critters OCs are going to be siblings for the original Smiling Critters instead. I did mention CatNap has seven older brothers and DogDay has thirteen sisters. These siblings are currently unnamed, but I can tell you this: CatNap's older brothers also have a lavender scent, but they don't breath out purple lavender smoke of their own. DogDay's sisters also have vanilla scents too.

And I'll let you dig in more on DogDay's OCs. DogDay is the fourth oldest and only son in his family. That's all I'm giving out.

Now then, let's check out the comments. After creating Frolic Froggy, there is one person who commented about a Smiling Critters OC that I think I'll use in another episode (it won't be the next though, but I'll give them a spot).

This comment comes from MiaTheGlowingStar

I love the idea of having your Panda OC into the story, but there's a few more bits of information missing. What's your OC's name and what does she look like (I don't want to assume she's just a normal black and white panda)? Just minor things, but I'll for sure find a spot.

Well, that's a wrap on the second comment showcase. I'll see you in episode three's comment showcase. supersader9 out.
