18. Nothing to Talk About

Micah has been avoiding Ashley since she 'kicked his ass', at least that's the reason she was giving people for Micah's worse than usual mood. He had been avoiding Ashley and people had definitely noticed. Only a few days ago they seemed like they were becoming close friends but now he wouldn't even look at her. When people asked Ashley about it she just told them that he was being weird but that it was nothing to worry about, she just pretended that it wasn't bothering her and she was pretty sure that they were believing it.

Ashley felt bad for ruining something good. She had been trying not to think about it and suppress certain thoughts but that day, when he had been so close to her, she accepted that she might actually have feelings for Micah Bell. And for a moment, just in a brief and fleeting moment, she thought that he felt the same way about her.

Of course if Micah didn't feel the same way, Ashley would completely accept that and try to forget about her creeping feelings but she wanted them to go back to being friends...or whatever they were before she created a mess.

They hadn't spoken since their almost kiss, and Ashley was getting frustrated by his childish behaviour. So she decided to try to talk to him. She took a breath before walking towards Micah's tent and stepping inside. She watched him for a moment, he had completely ignored her presence and was cleaning one of his guns.

"Micah, can I talk to you?" Ashley asked, her voice quieter than she had expected it to be.

"We ain't got nothin' to talk about" Micah shrugged, only glancing at the woman before looking away from her.

"Micah...just-" she sighed, stroking her hand over her hair.

"You don't have to say anything" he assured her assertively as he continued cleaning his gun, trying to focus on anything other than her.

"Look, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have-" she tried to apologise but was interrupted again.

"Ashley! Just leave it alone" he snapped, finally putting his gun down and standing up to face her. Ashley looked at him with slightly widened eyes, surprised by his sudden change in demeanour and flinching slightly.

"Okay...I'm sorry, if I could take it back, I would" she admitted, apologising again. This time she didn't give Micah a chance to respond, knowing that it wouldn't make any difference, as she turned and walked out of his tent.

'If I could take it back, I would'...Those words hurt Micah more than he would ever let on. It made him wonder whether she actually regretted trying to kiss him or if she was just trying to patch up their relationship.

Once the woman had left his tent, Micah groaned and sat back down on the edge of his bed. He ran his hand down his face before covering his face with both of his hands completely. He tried to ignore Ashley but it just kept getting more and more difficult. He had been doing jobs alone and watching Ashley ride out of camp with other people as they went to collect a score together. It annoyed him more than he cared to admit.

Ashley just walked away from Micah's tent and sat at the camp fire, trying to shake off the feeling of frustration. "Ashley, you busy?" Arthur asked as he walked up to her with a friendly smile.

"No, what's up?" she shook her head as she looked up at him with a smile.

"Uncle just told me about a wagon carrying some guns, want to check it out with me?" he asked, gesturing towards the horses.

"Sounds like fun" Ashley smiled as she stood up and they walked together towards the horses.

Ashley had returned to doing jobs either on her own or with Arthur, occasionally another member of the gang but mostly Arthur. She wasn't going to sulk around like Micah, even if she was the one that should be feeling hurt out of the two of them. He rejected her and she accepted that like a mature adult while he acted like a child.
