19. Avoidance

Another day passed without Micah even acknowledging Ashley, just like old times. They had somehow gone back to how they were before Dutch made them work together for the first time but without the arguing. Just ignoring each other.

"Ashley, could you take this hay bale over to the horses?" Charles asked politely after somebody called for him, needing his assistance with something.

"Sure" Ashley smiled as she took the hay bale from him, wishing him luck as he ran off to help whoever needed him. She carried the hay bale over to the horses and placed it down, patting one of the horses that paid attention to her.

She was just about to walk away but heard the sound of footsteps and twigs breaking coming from among the trees to the side of the camp. It was probably just one of the camp member walking around but she had to make sure that it was nothing that would cause trouble. Ashley walked towards the sound, her hand hovering over her holstered gun just in case. She let out a small sigh of relief and took her hand away from the gun when she saw Micah leaning backwards against a tree.

"Micah? What are you doing over here?" Ashley asked, relaxing a little.

"Thinking" he mumbled, his arms crossed over his chest as he looked away from her.

"You're always thinking, except for when it counts" she teased, hoping that she could lighten the mood and rebuild the friendship that they had in some way.

"You're real funny, you know that?" he scowled, only sparing a glance at her.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked, ignoring the way that he spoke to her.

"None of your business" he muttered, rolling his eyes and looking away from her.

"Come on Micah, I've said I'm sorry. We are adults, surely we can move past this. Look...you are an awful person but for some reason I care about you. You're my friend, at least I thought you were" Ashley sighed, walking around to stand in front of him.

"I don't have friends" Micah rolled his eyes again, finally looking at her properly.

"Well now you do, whether you like it or not. Just...stop avoiding me" her voice went a little quieter as she looked down at the ground.

"I haven't been avoiding you" he denied, but he wasn't convincing anybody, not even himself.

"You won't even talk to me!" she snapped, looking up at him again. Micah paused for a moment, surprised by her small outburst but he knew that he probably deserved it, because he knew that he had been avoiding her but he wasn't proud of it.

"You've been running round with Arthur so much, I thought that you wouldn't even notice if I was gone" he scoffed, uncrossing his arms and stepping away from the tree that he had been leaning back against.

"Of course I would notice! I'm not going to sulk around camp like you, I'm still going to do jobs with or without you" Ashley huffed, she wasn't going to stop doing her job just because he wasn't talking to her, it was his choice to avoid her. "Dutch has asked me to collect some money for him, I'm heading out in a minute. Come if you want, I don't care" she sighed, her voice sounded tired and defeating. She was giving up on fixing their partnership.

Before Micah could respond, Ashley turned around and walked away, heading for the horses. She didn't expect Micah to go with her so she wasn't going to wait around for him. Ashley was mounting Robin as Micah walked towards her and the horses. Once Ashley mounted her horse she was surprised to see Micah mounting Baylock, without saying anything.

Ashley rode out of the camp, smiling slightly to herself when Micah caught up and began riding along beside her. "Collecting money for Dutch?" Micah asked casually, breaking the silence.

"Apparently someone owes him cash, he said that we would recognise him by the way he is dressed. Really wealthy. Dutch said that his name was George Daven" Ashley explained, keeping the conversation as business like as possible. Honestly, she was a little afraid of crossing a line again.
