Chapter 6

James eyeing his watch impatiently, Diana got this habit to go home late every Tuesday and Thursday. At first he didn't notice until the whole month passed. She had a busy schedule already and all he wanted when she got spare time was to let her rest. He was a bit worry, Diana had lost so much weight for being too busy.

She'd never told him where she went and she refused to be picked up until one day James decided to follow her, well not really following her, but tracked her through her phone.

He frowned when he saw the tracker pointed out to a park in the city. What the hell was she doing in the middle of the park? He wondered. He needed to see her, to make sure that she was alright. He didn't think that she would hang out in a park after dark but boy oh boy this girl was almost giving him a heart attack!

His eyes scanned the street and at this peak hour, there was no way he could find parking and after wasting half an hour, he finally found a spot. He thought he shortened his life by a few years worrying about her during the process.

But by the time he turned off the engine, he saw the tracker moved.

"Fuck!" he got off the car and pressed the lock button before running across the street following the red dot on his phone. He stopped at a shopping mall with hundreds of people walking around. Oh great, he'd lost her!

He slowly walked back to his car when he saw her crossing the street with bags and bags of food in her hands.

"Miss Ana... " he called her out loud.

She was startled, "James? What are you doing here? How did you find me?" she asked.

"Tracking your mobile." He took the bags off her hands.

"Stalker! Why are you so obsessed with me?"

"I am not. I'm just worried about you."

"Worried of what? I am fine." She laughed cynically at him.

"Miss Ana, being in a park after dark sure worry me."

"James, I've been doing this way before you came. I know how to take care of myself. Stop being my nanny." She rolled her eyes and kept walking entering the park.

"What are you doing buying all these food?" he lifted the bags and counted the content, about ten boxes all together.

"For those guys." She simply pointed out a bunch of homeless teens that gathered on the park benches.

"Huh?" James was lost of words.

"Come and talk to them."

"Um Miss Ana, I don't think... "

"Come on, they're nice." She ignored his disgusted face and dragged him to follow her.

"Diana... that's quick!" A girl in a dull shirt approached her but quickly stopped when she saw James walking behind her.

"Lisa, don't worry. This is James, my friend. James this is Lisa." Diana took the food bags from him and signalled him to shake hand with Lisa.

He hesitated after seeing Lisa's filthy palm but he pushed himself to obey. If only he was Nicholas right now, he wouldn't even look at her let alone touched her. He would take a different path, avoiding the group as far as he could.

"Come sit here. James." Diana walked into the group and casually plopped herself in between them then distribute the food. James awkwardly followed after checking how clean the bench was.

"James right? You're hot dude." Lisa grinned at him. She was about seventeen with brown eyes and short dirty hair. Her teeth were yellowish and her face was full of freckles. She was pale and thin, unhealthy thin.

"I am... " James stuttered, he held the urge to cringe from being too close to a sleazy girl like her.

"Lisa, don't flirt with him. You've made him uncomfortable." Diana warned her.

"Noooo........ " Lisa pretended to sulk. "Tell me then, how do you find this one. He's the hottest among all." Lisa's question was supported by some of the kids on the bench. They were making agreeing noise while their mouth was full of food.

James raised his eyebrows. "... Among all? How many?"

"Let's see... Don, Jack, Paul....." Lisa started counting with her fingers.

"Lisa, shut up."

"Where's your boyfriend Patrick?"

Diana shook her head, "He's not coming."

"Boyfriend?" James asked curiously.

"My colleague. He's not my boyfriend." Flicking her long brown hair she protested.

"Not yet." Lisa winked. And James noticed flushes of crimson on Diana's cheeks.

They were talking and joking for an hour and before she went home, Diana withdrew a box of chocolate from her bag and left it on the bench. "See you next week guys. Be good!" she waved at them.

Soon after they walked quite far, James pulled out wet tissue from his pocket and wiped his hand clean. "Miss Ana... Who are they?"

"Some misfortune kids. Lisa got kicked out from the house because her mother's new boyfriend doesn't like her. Bob got beaten up by his father. Leyla, she's a drug addict, she was in and out of rehab several times already. I am worried about her. The rest of the kids have similar stories. See... This is what I am talking about James! I wish I could do more! I wish I could sell that car and buy them a house instead. You know, put a roof on their head so that they feel safe at night. Winter is coming soon... Argghh......." Diana got agitated and kicked a road sign pole.

"You can sell that car I am sure your dad wouldn't mind..."

"No! It's not mine, I can't do it!" She yelled.

"I spent my money for them. I don't get much pay, twice a week was the best I could do... I need to save money to buy them some blankets really soon." She sighed.

James saw her hands wiped her face carelessly so he quickened his steps to be on her side and took her in his arms. "Have you spoken to your dad about this?" he didn't know how but his heart ached when he saw her crying, first time he saw her cry actually. And she was a tough chick, this kids must mean a lot to her.

"No... I am scared. I've never asked for money from anyone. I can't... Besides it's not the solution. I need to find them jobs or something."

"Miss Ana, remember, you can't carry the burden of the world by yourself. Why don't we ask your dad to donate some blankets and slowly find the solution for the rest?"

He felt her nodded.

He let her go and checked her face one more time for tears, but she seemed okay now, in fact she gave him a small smile.

"Good. Sooooo, who are these Don, Jack, and Paul?" James teased, trying to cheer her up but deep down inside he also wanted to know.

"Nobody." Diana turned around and started walking.

"Come on tell me?"

"I am not telling you anything! Where did you park the car?"

"Next to Starbucks. Come on tell me. I want to know." He walked slightly behind her, following her back to the car.

"You're so nosy! Those are guys who dated me, I took them there and they freaked out." She finally gave in.

James stared at her backside, he didn't expect to hear that from her that she was dumped by guys because of her passion. That wasn't right. They should have supported her not leaving her, especially when she was passionate about helping others.

"And Patrick?"

"My colleague."

"Just a colleague?" He took few big steps so that he walked next to her.

"Yes James, just a colleague, and he volunteered in a youth homeless organisation called Little Home Foundation. What is it with you?"

"I need to know if you have a boyfriend."

"Why?"

"So I can screen him." He thought quickly for an excuse.

"What?!"

"A Wellesley girl can't date an ordinary guy."

"Oh, and you as my butler can stop that?"

"Your dad's special instruction. Watching your every move." He lied.

"I don't believe you. Who can I date then?"

"Someone as great as you are."

"Come on James, listen to yourself."

"I am serious Miss Ana. You are a lady. You need to date a proper gentleman."

"Huh! And who is this gentleman? You?"

"I can't date you Miss Ana, I am just a butler. Your dad will sack me if I cross the line."

She grunted but then she stopped walking, "Hang on a minute! Cross the line like what?" she challenged him.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Bursting into my room anytime you want, carrying me around, or seeing me in nightie isn't crossing the line?"

"I... um....." James blushed.

"Busted! You pervert! I knew it!"
