Chapter 14 - playing footy in the field

Notfar up the road from the paddock they crashed into was a rugby league oval. All that was there was a football sitting on a tee in the middle of the oval and a caravan parked in the spot furthest from the field and closest to the toilets. Toni pilled next to the field.

“well, looks like a good place to stay the night” Said Toni

“Not my first choice, sleeping in a car that has bullet holes in a seat and two windows” Said Bridget. Nevertheless they rugged up and slept in that football field car park for the night.

The next morning Bridget woke up. She noticed Toni was not in the seat he was in the night before. She got out f the car, stretched her leg, went to the little girls room. When she came out and saw Toni out in the middle of the oval kicking a ball through the goals. He was kicking goals from 30, 40, 50, even 60 metres out, and from the sideline too. Bridget walked up to take a better look. As she walked through the gate, she saw a great kick by Toni from 2 metres behind the try line, right by the side line. He curved it right round and it came straight in between the posts.

“Wow you’re good” Said Bridget.

“Aww thanks Bridget, but I’m not that great” Said Toni.

“Are you kidding that kick was amazing” Said Bridget.

“Well yeah. I got lucky” Replied Toni

“You would need a little more than luck to get a shot like that, have you played much before?” Asked Bridget.

“Yeah well when I was 17 I was pretty good, and I was almost about sign with two or three 1st class clubs, but during a club gran final I got hit hard by defender when I was running the ball up the field, I got lifted up and driven into the turf head first, I broke my neck, I didn’t walk for a year and I haven’t played a game of footy since, to be honest, this is one of the very first times I’ve stepped onto a footy field.” Explained Toni.

“Well you haven’t lost touch of your great ability much, really, amazing kick” Said Bridget as she hugged Toni.

“Thanks” Said Toni Bridget went and sat in the grand stand lining one side of the field.
