Mission: Space

"Oh, I love history class! Someone is always leaving me a little piece of gum stuck under my desk." Adam says as we walk down the steps of the school.

"Adam, please tell me you didn't," Chase says. Adam blows a bubble with his gum, and it pops.

"He did. He totally did." I say, feeling grossed out.

"Oh. Guys, don't look now, but here comes that guy none of us like. Marcus." Leo says.

"M-Dog!" Adam, Bree, and Chase say as they hug Marcus.

"Wait. Hold the phone. Hold the phone. Hold the freaky-deaky phone." Leo says as he and I get in between Adam, Bree, Chase, and Marcus. "M-Dog?"

"Yeah. Bro's call each other by nicknames." Chase says.

"Well, I'm your actual bro and you don't call me by a nickname," Leo says.

"Actually, we just choose not to do it in your presence," Adam says. "Mr. Tiny McLittlestein."

"I came up with the nickname," I say, giving Adam a high five.

"Hey, Marcus, what are you up to this weekend?" Chase asks.

"My dad's out of town so I'll be stuck home alone with my grandma," Marcus says.

"Aha! You said your grandma was dead." I say, pointing at Marcus.

"The other grandma," Marcus says, tearing up. "But thanks for reminding me." Bree hits me in the arm while Adam and Chase give me looks. "I wish I could stay with you guys for the weekend."

"And I wish you weren't a spastic sociopath with abandonment issues," I say, walking up to Marcus.

"Cassie, give it a rest," Chase says.

"Chase, none of us are safe until the FBI responds to my request for a background check on this M-Dog," Leo says.

"Look, Marcus, I'm sure you can stay with us. I'll just check with Mr. Davenport." Chase says.

"You call your dad Mr. Davenport?" Marcus asks.

"Uh, no. Pssh. No. But you do, and I wanted to make sure you knew who I was talking about." Chase says.

"Okay. Cool. Thanks, guys." Marcus says. He walks away from us as the school bell rings.

"Cass, watch out!" Chase shouted when a football was being thrown in my direction. Chase raises his hand, and the football flies in the other direction, avoiding me.

"What just happened?" I ask Chase.

"Did you just...?" Bree begins to say.

"I think I just moved that ball with my mind," Chase says.

"I didn't know you could do that," Leo says.

"Neither did I," Chase says.

"Man, if you can do that with your mind, I wonder what I could do with mine," Adam says.

"We've been wondering that for years," Bree says, putting her hand on Adam's shoulder.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Chase, this is amazing. You can move things with your mind!" Leo says as we walk into the lab. "You're like a really cool magician. You know, if there was such a thing as a really cool magician."

"It doesn't make any sense. It was probably just a fluke." Chase says. "I mean, it's not like everything around me is gonna suddenly start flying through the air." Chase waves his hand, and random objects go flying across the room. "Uh-oh."

"I'm gonna go tell Mr. Davenport about this," Bree says.

"What? No, wait!" Chase says, stopping Bree from leaving the lab. "If this is a glitch, and Mr. Davenport finds out about it, he won't let me go to school anymore. Let me tap into his cyberdesk, see if I can find out anything." We all walk up to Mr. Davenport's cyber desk, and Chase starts swiping through the files.

"Whoa. Guys, this isn't a glitch. I can move objects by manipulating the energy around them." Chase says. "I've unlocked a hidden ability called Molecularkinesis."

"Chase, I'm also gonna need you to unlock your ability to use smaller words," Adam says.

"According to this, we all have hidden abilities," Chase says.

"What?!" Bree says.

"That's so cool!" I say.

"What are they?!" Adam asks.

"I don't know. Let me see." Chase says. He tries to unlock a file on the cyber desk, but it won't let him.ย  "Oh, no. It's shutting us out. Mr. Davenport must have put a security lock on it. I'm sorry, guys, I guess we'll just have to discover them on our own."

"Fine," Bree says.

"Whatever," I say.

"Ooh! Maybe my new ability is that I can speak Russian." Adam says. "Testing, testing...is this Russian?"

"Keep lookin'," Bree says.

Upstairs, Mr. Davenport was sitting on the couch, playing on his tablet when Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, and I walk in. "Hey, Mr. Davenport. Is it okay if Marcus spends the weekend here? His dad is away and he doesn't want to spend it with his not-dead grandma." Adam says.

"No. Don't do it. Marcus is an evil, two-faced liar. And also...a Sagittarius." Leo says. "They're shifty."

"I am a Sagittarius." Bree says.

"I rest my case," Leo says. The doorbell rings.

"You know, guys, this is really not a great weekend...for visitors. I got a lot of stuff..."

"Marcus," Chase says as he opens the front door. "What a surprise. We were just talking about you."

"Yeah, let me catch you up to speed. You're two-faced and no one likes you. Goodbye." Leo says, pointing to the door.

"I love this little guy. He's so full of fire!" Marcus says, patting Leo on the head. "Mr. Davenport, my dad left before my grandma got there and I was all alone and this is the only place that I feel safe and...please don't make me leave!" Marcus hugs Mr. Davenport.

"Yeah, okay, okay. Okay, all right. You can stay." Mr. Davenport says. His watch starts to beep.

"What is that?" Marcus asks.

"Uh, that? That means it's, uh...it's happy time. How about you stay here and be happy, and we'll be happy over there." Mr. Davenport says. Mr. Davenport, Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, and I walk over to the kitchen. "Guys, that is the mission alarm. We have to get down to the lab immediately. Leo, distract Marcus."

"What?! No...no, no, no." Leo says as Mr. Davenport, Bree, and Chase run down to the lab.

"Uh, Marcus. We'll be right back." I say. "We gotta go...pick up a pizza."

"All of you?" Marcus says.

"It's an...extra large," Adam says. He and I run out of the living room and down to the lab.

"Okay. So they're busy, I hate you, and you hate me. So why don't we kill some time and brush up on the latest issue of...Ladies Life Monthly." Leo says, picking up a magazine.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"There's a crisis at my space station." Mr. Davenport says as we make it down to the lab.

"You have a space station?" I ask.

"Yeah. I'm building the world's first intergalactic tourist destination." Mr. Davenport says. "Key words: first and tourist. Ka-ching! Watch the Earth rise from your hotel room as you enjoy all the comfort of home, like oxygen and gravity."

"Man, I have always wanted to go to space," Chase says.

"Yeah, well, you're about to get your wish." Mr. Davenport says. "A meteor shower struck the station, and an asteroid breached the hull. It's gassing out. If we don't do something quick, it's gonna re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and disintegrate with all my crew members onboard."

"Oh! Our first rescue mission...in space!" Adam says. "Wait, from now on, I'm gonna need you all to refer to me by my code name Space Cadet."

"Got news for you, buddy. We've been calling you by your code name for years." I say, putting my hand on Adam's shoulder.

"Okay, you guys don't have much training for space, but people's lives are in danger, so I will talk you through it." Mr. Davenport says as he hands us our ear communicators. "Chase, as usual, you are our mission leader. Now, your mission suits are not equipped for zero gravity, so there are four space suits in the shuttle. Lift-off is in ten minutes."

"What about Marcus?" Chase says.

"I don't know. I guess I'm gonna have to call his not-dead grandmother." Mr. Davenport says.

"Chase, if you're gonna lead this mission, you have to tell Davenport about your Molecularkinesis," Bree says. "If you can't control it, you're putting us all at risk."

"Don't worry, okay? I already talked to him about it, and he deactivated it." Chase says. "So I'm good to be your mission leader...as always."

"Oh, I'm your mission leader." I mock, receiving a glare from Chase. "Why don't you just put it on a t-shirt so everyone knows when you walk into a room?"

"I did," Chase says, holding up a blue t-shirt that says, mission leader. I just roll my eyes.

"Fine. When the Martians show up, you're gettin' probed first." I say. We leave the lab.

Upstairs, Marcus and Leo were sitting on the couch in the living room as Leo reads what was on the magazine out loud. "Okay. So, when you are on a romantic candlelight dinner, do you prefer dessert to be A) a relaxing foot rub, B) a night away from the kids, or C) chocolate mousse?" Leo says.

"How about D) finding clever new ways to ruin your life?" Marcus says. Mr. Davenport walks into the living room.

"Hey, Marcus. Excuse me, I have to borrow Leo for a second. Something went horribly wrong with the pizza. Excuse me." Mr. Davenport says, pulling Leo aside in the hallway. "How's it going?"

"Oh, fine. I'm distracting him with my mom's lady magazines. Turns out the chicas actually prefer a man with insecurities. Who knew?" Leo says.

"Look, this mission is very complicated. I had to send Adam, Bree, Chase, and Cassie into space." Mr. Davenport says.

"They're in space?!" Leo shouts. "And I'm stuck here making small talk with a narcissistic commitment-phobe who nine out of ten women wouldn't take home to meet their mother? I expect combat pay for this." When Mr. Davenport and Leo walk back to the couch, they see that Marcus is gone.

"Where'd he go?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"He's probably up on the second floor dangling my hamster out of the window," Leo says.

"Just find him and get him out of here." Mr. Davenport says.

"Ahem!" Leo says, holding his hand out for Mr. Davenport to give him money.

"Fine. Combat pay." Mr. Davenport says, handing Leo the money.

"Thank you. But Just so we're clear, this does not include my gas, mileage, meals..."

"Just go!" Mr. Davenport shouts, leaving the living room.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Down in the lab, just as Mr. Davenport walks in, he sees Marcus standing inside Chase's capsule. "Hey, Mr. Davenport!" Marcus says.

"Hey, Marcus. Marcus!" Mr. Davenport shouts.

"I couldn't find Marcus any...oh, boy," Leo says, running into the lab and seeing Marcus.

"What is this place?" Marcus asks once he steps out of Chase's capsule. "What are these?"

"Uh, those...those are...Leo, tell him what those are." Mr. Davenport says.

"Oh, um, they are...washing machines," Leo says.

"Yes! These are my new high-tech industrial washing machines." Mr. Davenport says. "Each load costs 150 quarters."

"Okay, back upstairs, you little weirdo," Leo says.

"But I want to watch you work," Marcus says.

"No!" Leo and Mr. Davenport both say.

"Um, actually, you know what, maybe some other time." Mr. Davenport says. "But, Leo, I will be back before the rinse cycle has enough space to land."

"Got it. Okay." Leo says. "Until you're back, I will make it my mission to control the rinse cycle. But I think the rinse cycle might need more...of a payload." Mr. Davenport leads Marcus out of the lab.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

On the space station, Adam, Bree, Chase, and I arrive in our white space suits. "Greetings, space people! We come in peace from a planet called Earth." Adam says to the crew members on the space station.

"Adam, they're from Earth too," I say.

"No, no. That's what they want you to think. But you see her over there? She's about to pull her head off and become queen of the alien squid people." Adam says. "Wait for it, wait for it...wait for it..."

"Hello, everyone. Sorry, we're late. The Milky Way is a bear this time of night." Chase says.

"All right, people, you're safe now, so single file to the back of the shuttle. Oh, and your in-flight movie is me talking about my boy problems. Whoo!" Bree says. The crew members leave the station.

"Wait for it..." Adam says as the woman leaves the room.

Back at the house, Mr. Davenport and Marcus were in the living room. "I'm only gonna have time to come to a rolling stop, so when we get to your house, aim for grass." Mr. Davenport says. He hands Marcus his bags.

"M...Mr. Davenport, I'm sorry if I did anything wrong, it's just you've no idea how much I look up to you." Marcus says. "My dream is to someday follow in your footsteps and maybe, just maybe, get a sliver of your success."

"Aiming kind of high, aren't you there, kid?" Mr. Davenport says. "Tell you what. You come over some other time, and I will enlighten you with a little lesson in Davenportology."

"Cool! And maybe I could share some of my own theories with you." Marcus says.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is gonna be all about me." Mr. Davenport says. They leave the house.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"There isn't much time. The hull breach is compromising the structural integrity of the station." Chase says. "And there's an asteroid shower heading our way!"

"Okay, I've got the tool we need to fix the hull," Adam says, twirling the tool in his hand.

"Adam, be careful with that. It's not a toy." Chase says.

"Not unless you give it its own voice," Adam says. He then says in a falsetto voice. "Hey, look at me! I'm a toy!" Chase grabs the tool from Adam and sets it on the table.

"Okay, we have to contact Mr. Davenport so he can guide us through this," Chase says. He turns on the screen in the station, and Leo pops up.

"Earth here. Commander Dooley speaking." Leo says.

"Leo?! Where's Mr. Davenport?!" I ask.

"He had to take Marcus home. But he should have been back by now." Leo says. "Oh, also, before I forget, I'm gonna need you to bring me back a lot of souvenirs. A space helmet, space rocks, space soap, a space towel, those tiny little space shampoos...shampoos, not conditioners..." Chase shuts off the screen.

"How is Adam supposed to go out into space and fix the breached hull if we don't have Mr. Davenport here to tell him how to do it!" Chase says. Chase waves his hand in frustration, and the tool Adam was holding flies across the room.

"Chase...did your deactivated Molecularkinesis just destroy the tool we need to fix the damaged hull?" Bree says.

"No," Chase says.

"You lied to us!" Bree says. "You never even told Davenport about it, did you?"

"If I had told him about it, he never would have let me come into space," Chase says.

"Wait. So our mission leader just messed up the mission. Whoo-hoo! For once it wasn't me!" Adam shouts. He gives me a high five.

"We have to talk to Mr. Davenport. He'll know what to do." Chase says. He turns on the screen and Leo continues the list of souvenirs he wants.

"Space chocolate, space taffy, a Martian...moon cheese, space pizza..." Chase turns off the screen again.

"Well, Davenport's not there, but at least we know what Leo wants from the gift shop!" I say. "What are we gonna do?!"

"Wait. What if I use my heat vision to seal the pieces of the hull back together?" Adam says.

"Adam! That's a great idea!" Bree says. "Chase, hand over your shirt."

Chase shakes his head. "Let's just go. Come on. Go." We walk into another part of the shuttle. "Okay, the visor is designed to let your heat vision through. So whatever you do, don't open it or your face will explode."

"Adam, I'm connecting this tether to you," Bree says. "It'll keep you connected to the station. So you don't drift off."

"That's a funny word: tether. Tether. Tether. Te...te...t...t...t...t...tether." Adam says. "Tetherrrr. Tether. T...T...T...T...T...tether. Tether. Tether." Bree, Chase, and I leave, and Adam starts flying into space as he continues to say the word tether.

"Adam, just find the panel," Chase says.

"Oh, I see it!" Adam says. He seals the hull with his heat vision. "I did it! I did it!" Adam's heat vision glitches and he accidentally severs the tether. "Uh-oh."

"Adam, what's wrong?" Chase asks.

"Oh, no. His heat vision severed the tether." I say. "He's drifting out into space!"

"Uh, guys, we have another problem," Chase says. "Adam! Behind you!" Adam starts screaming when he sees an asteroid coming toward him. "Just use your super-strength to punch it apart!" Adam punches the asteroid, and it breaks into a million pieces.

"Ow!" Adam shouts. I walk into another part of the shuttle.

"What are you doing?" Bree asks me.

"I gotta go save him. There's another tether." I say. "Help me put this on. I can float out to him and pull him in." Bree attaches the tether to my space suit.

"All right. Look, just be safe out there, okay?" Bree says. I nod my head and put on my helmet. Bree and Chase go back to the main part of the shuttle as I float out into space.

"Adam, hold on. I'm coming!" I say.

"Hold on to what?" Adam says.

"I can't reach! The tether's too short!" I say.

"Did you bring a stick?" Adam says. "It's not going to work! I'm drifting away!"

"Wait! Maybe I could use my Molecularkinesis to bring him closer to you!" Chase says.

"Chase, you can't control it. What if we go flying off into space?" I say.

"Already doing it. I say go for it." Adam says. Chase uses his Molecularkinesis to move Adam closer to me.

"Come on!" I say. As Chase was holding his hand out, nothing seemed to be happening.

"It's not working. Maybe it doesn't work on people." Chase says.

"Try harder! It's our last hope!" I say. Chase holds out his hand again and uses his Molecularkinesis to move me closer to Adam.

"A little more...a little more....stretch!" I say just as I grab onto Adam's hand. "I got him!"

"Yes! Who's the Molecularkinesis master!" Chase says. He starts dancing, and Adam and I bounce up and down as a result of Chase's Molecularkinesis.

"Chase!" Adam and I both say. Chase stops dancing, and he and Bree bring us back in.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Back in the lab, Mr. Davenport runs in. "On my way home I discovered what that little red light on my dashboard of my hydrogen car means. It means you're out of hydrogen and you're walking home." Mr. Davenport says. He takes the ear communicator from Leo. "How's the mission going? Guys? Guys? What's the status of the space station? Are you there?"

"Yup, right here," I say as Adam, Bree, Chase, and I stand by the doorway in our regular clothes.

"Oh, hello." Mr. Davenport says.

"Where have you been?" Chase says.

"You totally abandoned us!" I say. "And the entire mission!"

"Adam floated out into space and almost became the world's dumbest satellite," Chase says. "And he would have if I hadn't stumbled across my Molecularkinesis. Oh...also I stumbled upon my Molecularkinesis."

"How did you find out about that?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"I think the more important question is how could you not have told me sooner?" Chase asks.

"Uh, Mr. Davenport, what other abilities do I have? Because I vote for the ability to look into the future and see myself far, far away from all of...this." I say.

"Yes, it's...it's true, you all have abilities you don't know about. But I can't tell you what they are or when they'll appear." Mr. Davenport says.

"Why not?" Adam asks.

"Because I don't know what they all are or when they'll appear." Mr. Davenport says.

"What do you mean you don't know?" Bree asks.

"Look, there are certain things I can't tell you right now, but it's for your own good. Strange things will continue to happen, and I promise eventually I will give you the answers you're looking for." Mr. Davenport says. "But for now, you just have to trust me."

"But Mr. Davenport..." I begin to say.

"Please, I need you to trust me." Mr. Davenport says. "And you have to be careful who you allow into your lives. We had a close call today. Marcus found the lab."

"What?" Chase says.

"Hmm...who would have guessed that Marcus coming here would lead to bad things?" Leo says. "I'll tell you. It's Mr. Tiny McLittlestein! Right here!" I clear my throat.

"Hello?" I say.

"Oh, yeah, and Cassie," Leo says.

"We're just lucky I came down when I did. Or he could have discovered all of our secrets." Mr. Davenport says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Adam, Bree, Leo, Mr. Davenport, and I were still in the lab. I was sitting next to Bree as she watches me draw in my art book. "Thank you all for coming. I have a very important announcement to make." Adam says. "I have discovered my hidden ability!"

"What? What is it?" I say, looking up from my art journal.

"Check it out," Adam says. He clears his throat and burps loudly. "Super burps!"

"Okay, is this really happening?" Bree says.

"All right, super burps it is." Mr. Davenport says as we clap for Adam.

"And how do you plan on using this amazing new ability?" Leo asks.

"Watch, and I'll show you," Adam says just as Chase walks into the lab.

"Hey, guys, what's up?" Chase says. Adam burps loudly in Chase's face, and Chase runs away in disgust.

"That is not bad," I say.

"Yeah, you might have something there." Mr. Davenport says as we all clap for Adam.

Later that day, Chase and I were sitting on the couch as I continue to finish what I was drawing in my notebook. Mr. Davenport walks into the living room. "Hey, guys, how's it going?"

"Hey, Mr. Davenport." Chase and I both say. Mr. Davenport sees me drawing in my art journal.

"What are you working on, Cass?" Mr. Davenport says.

"Oh, nothing. Just another art design I came up with. What do you think?" I ask, showing my notebook to Mr. Davenport. He takes the notebook from me and looks at the drawing.

"That's pretty good, Cass. It's...it's..." As Mr. Davenport looks at the drawing, his face falls. The drawing was of a man with light brown spiky hair and hazel eyes.

"Mr. Davenport, is everything okay?" I ask.

"Yeah, it's just...how did you come up with this?" He asks.

"I don't know. It just came to me one day, and I just started drawing it." I say. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine. Uh, Cass, is it okay if I hold onto this?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"Uh, yeah, sure," I say. I take the notebook from Mr. Davenport and rip the drawing out for him to keep. "There you go."

"Thanks." Mr. Davenport says as he walks out of the living room.

"That was weird," I say, looking at Chase.

"Yeah," Chase says.

In a dark room, Marcus walks up to a man sitting in a chair. "Everything went exactly as planned. Davenport's lab was right where you said it would be. And the microscopic spy cam is up and running. I even placed one in the living room." Marcus says as he shows a video footage of Chase and me sitting on the couch watching TV. "We've got them right where we want 'em."
