Drone Alone

"Oh, this is so exciting! I have never been to Australia before." Tasha says as she walks into the living room with her suitcases.

"Hey, maybe you'll like it so much you won't want to come back!" Eddy says.

"Donald, honey, do you have the plane tickets?" Tasha asks.

"Honey, we're taking my fully automated private jet." Mr. Davenport says. "Plane tickets. Why don't we just slap on a bunch of stamps and mail ourselves there?"

"Private jet. That works." Tasha says. She turns to Leo and says in a hushed tone. "Score!"

"Okay, Leo, this is your chance to prove you're responsible enough to stay at home without us." Mr. Davenport says.

"Me? What about them?" Leo asks, pointing at us. The four of us were sitting on the couch. Adam was changing the channel, Bree was on her phone, Chase was counting using his fingers and writing something down on a piece of paper, and I was drawing something in my art journal.

"They were designed to go on missions and save the world. You were designed to break stuff." Mr. Davenport says.

"Don't worry, I know the rules...no touchy-touchy your stuffy-stuffy," Leo says.

"Leo, I'm serious. There's millions of dollars worth of technology here. So no goof-ups, no explosions, no fires...you know what? I'm not going. I'm not going." Mr. Davenport says.

"Donald, Leo will be responsible. He is a big boy." Tasha says. "Sweetie, I left your flame-retardant undies on the dresser."

"Mr. Davenport, Leo will be fine. I mean, what's the worst that could happen?" Bree asks, getting up from the couch.

"Funny you should ask. I've made an actuary chart which covers every possible catastrophe. You have an 82% chance of coming back to a perfectly normal house." Chase says. He hands Mr. Davenport the chart he made. "Happy travels."

"Don't worry! Eddy is here to monitor every room in the house. He is like a virtual babysitter." Tasha says.

"Yeah, and I virtually care about your kids," Eddy says.

"Big D, I got this," Leo says. "No explosions, no goof-ups, no fires, no floods..." Leo says as he ushers Mr. Davenport out the door.

"Wait. I didn't think about floods." Mr. Davenport says.

"Donald, let's go!" Tasha says. "Bye, guys! Love you!"

"Okay, be careful. There's an inflatable raft in the closet." Mr. Davenport says.

"All right, bye!" Chase says.

"Goodbye! Go!" Leo says. Mr. Davenport and Tasha leave.

"Whoo-hoo! Party in the lab!" Adam shouts.

"Whoo!" I say, giving Adam a high five.

"Did you not hear what Davenport just said? We're supposed to be responsible." Leo says.

"Oh, right. I'll be responsible for the snacks. Leo, you're responsible for blowing up that raft!" Adam says. "Whoo-hoo! Party in the lab!"

"Yeah!" Chase says as we head down to the lab.

"And he's worried about me?" Leo says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Australia looks interesting. But I'd really like to check out New York." Bree says, looking through a magazine.

"Yeah, well, maybe someday when we're older..." Chase starts to say, but Bree super speeds out of the lab to go to New York. "Or now." He turns to Adam and me. "And what are you up to?"

"We are combining foods. See, butterscotch pudding and tomatoes is probably a no, but being home alone and doing whatever we want is a huge yes, so we're gonna do it anyway!" Adam says. He dips the tomato in the pudding and takes a bite. Chase gives him a disgusted look.

"Oh, that is bad," Adam says. Leo walks into the lab.

"Chase, what are you doing at Davenport's computer?" Leo asks.

"I'm pulling a prank on him. The next time he checks his bank account, it's gonna be in euros!" Chase says. "Bam! Same value, but still funny, right?"

"No," Leo says, pulling Chase away from the computer.

"No. No." Chase says, holding onto the keyboard.

"Give it to me," Leo says, taking the keyboard away from him. Bree super speeds back wearing new clothes, a new hairstyle, and makeup. "Where were you?"

"Well, I was headed to New York City, but I got stuck in Jersey," Bree says in a Jersey accent. She shows off her earrings. "Check out my bling. Boom! How's ya like them sparklers?"

"Bree, look what you did! You got butterscotch pudding all over my broccoli!" Adam says. He takes a bite out of the broccoli. "What a delicious mistake!"

"Aw, I'm sorry, Adam. I meant to get it on your face!" Bree says. She picks up a spoonful of pudding and when she tries to throw it at Adam, he ducks and the pudding hits Chase. "Ho, ho! Boom on throwin' puddin' here!"

"Oh, look! Chase and pudding! I hadn't thought of that combo!" Adam says. He reaches his hand out to eat some of the pudding, but Chase slaps it away.

"Bree, you are goin' down," Chase says.

"Bring it! Adam, hold my hoops!" Bree says, taking off her earrings.

"All right, food fight!" I say. Bree, Chase, and I start picking up food, and before we throw it at each other, Leo stops us.

"Hey! Hey, hey, hey! Stop! I really need this weekend to go well for me." Leo says.

"Chill out, Leo. What's the big deal?" I say. "We're just having a little fun."

"I'm not," Leo says. "If Davenport trusts me to stay home alone, then next he'll give me a project in the lab, and then he'll let me go on a mission with you. Don't you want me to go on missions with you?"

"Ehh," Chase says.

"I guess," Adam says.

"No," I say.

"Not so much," Bree says.

"Okay, that's it. No more crazy foods, no more pranking Davenport, and no more breaking your curfew to go to New York." Leo says.

"Jersey! Whateva." Bree says. "This guy, what a nudge."

"Just get in your capsules and go to sleep. I'll turn on the nightlight for you." Leo says. As we get into our capsules, Leo turns on a device that was on the console, and it powers up.

"Ohh! Ew! It feels like my stomach just popped!" Adam says. "Can I leave my door open a crack?"

"No." Bree, Chase, and I say.

"All right, but it might blow open by itself," Adam says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"That sunset was so beautiful," Tasha says as Mr. Davenport's private jet heads to Australia.

"Yeah. Everything looks better out the window of your own private jet." Mr. Davenport says. "You know, if I wasn't so accomplished, I'd probably sound like a jerk."

"Oh, no, honey. You do sound like a jerk." Tasha says.

"Oh, no. I think I forgot to unplug the LEMP." Mr. Davenport says. "I better call home."

"You are just making up words so that you can check on the kids," Tasha says. "The LEMP? Where's that, on the toble next to the bid?"

"The LEMP is a localized electromagnetic pulse. I think I left it on the console in the lab." Mr. Davenport says.

"Don't you mean the leb?" Tasha laughs.

"It's not funny. If one of those kids turns it on, it could fry every electrical circuit in the house." Mr. Davenport says.

"It's late. Don't call and wake them up." Tasha says. "Besides, if anything goes wrong, Eddy will call us."

"Unless I stowed away on your tablet," Eddy says, popping up on Mr. Davenport's tablet. "I stowed away on your tablet! I'm on vacay! Let's party! Can I get a whoop whoop?"

In the lab, the LEMP beeps and sends out a pulse across the room. An alarm starts going off, and we wake up. We all look around in confusion, and Bree, Chase, and I turn to look at Adam, who looks like he was about to cry.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The next morning, Leo whistles as he enters the lab. "Good morn...aaahh!" Leo yells. He looks around the lab to see Adam chilling out in the inflatable raft with a bunch of papers around the lab, Chase standing in the corner, and Bree and I are nowhere to be found.

"Leo? Leo? Is that you?" Chase says.

"What happened?! All I did was go to sleep!" Leo says.

"Leo, something happened to my vision. I can only see pixels." Chase says. He trips and falls. "I'm okay."

"Buddy up what's," Adam says.

"He sounds different," Leo says.

"Yeah, that's 'cause he can only speak backwards. It was fun for about the first five minutes...now Chase and I just want to rip his head off." I say. Leo looks around the lab when he hears my voice, but he doesn't see me.

"Cassie? Where are you?" Leo asks.

"I'm standing in front of you. Something happened to us last night. When I woke up, my bionics got all glitchy, and now I'm invisible." I say.

"Wait. Wait, where's Bree?" Leo asks. "And if you say she went to Paris for crepes, I'm gonna lose it!" Chase puts his hands on Leo's shoulders.

"I don't know where she is. Something woke us up in the middle of the night, she started bouncing around the room like a pinball, and I haven't seen her since. I haven't seen anything since." Chase says. He tries to touch Leo's face.

"I'm gonna...all right. Okay. Okay, I'm gonna...I'm gonna call her and I'm gonna get her back." Leo says. He dials Bree's number on the console. "Call Bree," Bree answers the call and shows up on one of the monitors in the lab.

"Bree! No! Please don't tell me you've gone back in time." Leo says.

"No! I just woke up and started running. The next thing I knew, I was in the middle of the desert, my feet were smoking, and my navigation system was all goofed up." Bree says. "My phone's about to die! What am I gonna do..." The video call cuts out.

"Bree! Bree!" Leo says, trying to get her back.

"Oh-uh," Adam says.

"Guys, a little help here, please," Chase says. Adam, Leo, and I move Chase to where we were standing.

"Okay. Okay. All right, and...there you go, buddy." Leo says. Adam pushes Chase and laughs.

"Seriously, Adam!" I say.

Back on Mr. Davenport's private jet, Mr. Davenport was pouring a cup of coffee for Tasha. "The kids should be up by now. And if they're not, it'll be my distinct pleasure to wake them up." Mr. Davenport dialed the lab from the earpiece communicator he was wearing.

"What the heck is that?!" Leo asks as we hear a loud alarm in the lab.

"Well, it's either Mr. Davenport's radon gas alarm, or it's his emergency phone. And being that none of us have passed out yet, it's his emergency phone!" Chase yells. Adam walks over to answer the phone, but Leo stops him.

"Oh...no...hey. Hey." Leo picks up the phone and answers it. "Davenport Industries, home of the little man's big dreams. Leo speaking. How may I help you?"

"Leo! What's going on?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"Not a thing. Watching cartoons, eating cereal. You know, Saturday morning things." Leo says.

"Cartoons watch want to I!" Adam shouts. Chase covers his mouth.

"Was that Adam? Let me talk to him." Mr. Davenport says.

"Um...no. It's the TV. I'm watching Captain Backwards. He saves the day in the beginning and...does all the boring stuff at the end." Leo says. "It's a terrible show. I don't know why I watch it."

"What about Bree? Is she around?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"No. You know girls, she's knee-deep in makeup and unicorns." Leo says. He lowers the phone and whispers. "What am I saying?"

"Look, Leo, I need you to do me a favor. I need you to unplug the LEMP on the console." Mr. Davenport says.

"LEMP." Tasha snickers.

"Oh, you mean...the nightlight?" Leo asks.

"It's not a nightlight. It's a localized electromagnetic pulse. Please tell me you did not turn it on." Mr. Davenport says.

"No," Leo says, unplugging the LEMP. "No, I did not. Um...I should go. Tell my mommy I love her."

"Oh, I will. Okay." Mr. Davenport says.

"What did he say?" Tasha says.

"He said, tell my mommy I love her." Mr. Davenport says.

"He said mommy? He's hiding something. Turn this plane around. Turn this plane around! Leo! We are coming home right now!" Tasha shouts into the phone. The phone call disconnects.

"They're coming home right now," Leo says.

"What?!" Adam says.

"Tell my mommy I love her?" I say.

"I'm sorry. When I freak out, I talk baby talk. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go upstairs to take a night-night with my binky." Leo says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Leo, how could you turn on the LEMP?! It's a giant glitch machine! That's what goofed us all up!" I say.

"Ohhh. So this is one of those things that Davenport talks about we're not supposed to touch?" Leo says. Adam and Chase shake their heads. "Good to know...good to know."

"Look, we have to fix this before they get home. I'll locate Bree's signal and send her the coordinates so she can find her way back." Chase says.

"I thought you couldn't see," Leo says.

"Oh, Leo. Genius has no boundaries." Chase laughs.

"Well, it's good to see that your lack of sight hasn't taken away from your sense of superiority," Leo says. After pressing a few buttons on the console, Chase sends the coordinates to Bree.

"Oh, good, it's flashing signal received. But what are we gonna do about you guys?" Leo asks.

"Well, Mr. Davenport did install an emergency video file on my internal hard drive. But we're only supposed to watch it in an emergency." Chase says.

"Oh, up wake! Emergency it is this!" Adam says, hitting Chase on the arm. I grab Chase's arm and place the hard drive into the console. A video of Mr. Davenport shows up on one of the monitors.

"So if you're watching this, I must have gone to that big hard drive in the sky. How could this have happened?! I was so young!" Mr. Davenport says. He starts crying. "Look at me! I was so beautiful and talented and smart...this is awful!"

"Right about now I'm sort of glad I can't see this," Chase says.

"Is that really what he wore to say his final farewell? Slap on a suit, dude! You're on a stairway to heaven!" Leo says.

"Now, you're probably in crisis, so first things first. If you didn't have time to have me cryogenically frozen, just chuck me in the fridge for now, it'll have to do." Mr. Davenport says.

"Don't you let him near my cold cuts!" Leo says to Adam.

"Oh, and, uh, I would like you to play my super funeral mix at my service. Also, money is no object, so I'd like a super-huge blow-out, you know, something befitting a man as awesome as I...was." Mr. Davenport says. He puts his hands over his mouth and starts tearing up. "I'm sorry. You guys must miss me so much!"

"Is there a fast forward?" I ask.

Chase starts swiping through the video. "Yeah. There are different chapters."

"Okay, searching, searching, searching...stop! There it is. Someone didn't listen and turned on the LEMP." Leo says.

"Well, that's eerily specific," Chase says.

"Get into the middle of the capsule with bare feet and press your hands against the sides of the cylinder. This connects the circuit, initiates a reboot, and will repair all the damage." Mr. Davenport explains in the video.

"Okay. Once I restore my settings, we can get things back to normal before Tasha and Davenport get home." Chase says. "And they'll never know how thoroughly and completely you messed up." Chase tries to point at Leo, but he points to the space next to him. Adam and I lead Chase to his capsule, and it restores his settings. He steps out of his capsule.

"So?" Leo asks.

"Where am I? Who are you people?!" Chase says.

"Oh, great!" Leo says.

"Ha! Just kidding. Cass, you're next." Chase laughs. As I walk to the middle capsule, I hit Chase over the head for making that joke. I get inside the capsule, and it restores my settings. I was visible again and stepped out of the capsule.

"It worked!" Leo says.

"Yes! I'm not invisible anymore!" I say.

"Is that peanut butter on your hair?" Leo asks, seeing peanut butter smeared on the ends of my hair. I look down at my hair.

"Oh, you're right. It is!" I say. I take a strand of hair and lick off the peanut butter.

"Okay, Adam, you're up," Chase says.

"Luck me wish," Adam says. He starts taking off his shoes.

"Okay, if he's gonna take his shoes off, we might want to take a step back," Chase says. Adam gets in the capsule, and it also restores his settings. He steps out of the capsule.

"Whoo! I think I'm okay. Wait, my voice isn't coming out of my butt, is it?" Adam asks.

"And he's back," Chase says.

In the living room, we were quickly cleaning everything up before Tasha and Mr. Davenport got back. "Okay, everything's cleaned up. Now all we need is Bree." Leo says.

"No problem. I'm tracking her right now. According to this, she should be here any minute." Chase says, looking at his laptop. Bree super speeds into the living room.

"That took forever. My phone died, and I had to buy a map...a paper map. I mean, do you know how hard it is to fold this thing up?" Bree says. She throws the map on the floor.

"A map? Didn't you get the coordinates I sent you?" Chase asks.

"What coordinates? I didn't get any coordinates." Bree says.

"Wait. If Bree's here, then what are you tracking?" I ask. We all look at the laptop as we hear rapid beeping.

"I don't know. It's probably just a bird." Chase says. Suddenly, a drone crashes through the window and lands in the living room. "Or not." We all walk over to the drone. It was smoking.

"Guys, this is one of Mr. Davenport's drones. I must have sent it the coordinates instead of Bree!" Chase says.

"Oh, yeah. A giant flying piece of metal and a teenage girl...I see how you can get that messed up." Leo says.

"I messed it up because my vision was impaired...by you, Mr. Touchy-stuffy mommy-misser," Chase says.

"Chase, let's not play the blame game," Leo says, putting his hand up.

"Guys, this drone controls all of Mr. Davenport's GPS technology, including the plane that he's flying on right now," Chase says.

"What?! Why would he keep the command center for all of his technology flying around in the sky?" Leo asks.

"Probably because you're down here," I say. Leo gives me a look.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"What was I thinking? I knew Leo wasn't ready to be left home alone." Tasha says. "How could I let you talk me into this?"

"You talked me into this!" Mr. Davenport says.

"Donald, let's not play the blame game," Tasha says.

"This is so weird. I programmed the jet to take us home, but it's not reading the coordinates from my drone." Mr. Davenport says.

"I'm sorry. Your what?" Tasha asks.

"I have an orbiting drone that coordinates all of my..."

"Don't bother, Donny! She'll never be one of us!" Eddy says. "She's dial up in a 4G world."

"Are you telling me that we are just randomly flying around right now, no flight plan, no pilot?!" Tasha says.

"Gee, Tasha, this sounds pretty serious! You should probably jump out." Eddy says.

"Unless one of my other computers takes the controls and lands the jet for me." Mr. Davenport says.

"Wait. He's gonna fly the plane for us? You have got to be kidding me!" Tasha says.

"Buckle up, sugar. It's gonna be a bumpy ride!" Eddy says, making the plane fly faster.

"Eddy!" Tasha shouts, holding onto her chair.

Back at the house, Bree, Leo, and I had just finished cleaning up the glass that was on the floor while Adam and Chase were fixing the drone. "All right, that's the last of the broken glass," Bree says.

"And the drone is fixed," Chase says.

"Go ahead, Chase, hop in. Ha, ha! That's a joke, 'cause you're so tiny." Adam laughs.

"Yet my brain is still twice the size of yours," Chase says.

"Oh, yeah? Well...I...I...yeah, you got me." Adam says. Chase and I give each other a high five.

"What about the window?" I ask.

"We'll deal with that later. Let's focus on getting Adam and the drone outside so we can launch it off the roof and back into the sky." Leo says. He opens the front door and then quickly slams the door. "They're walking up the driveway! They are walking up the driveway!" Adam finds a place to hide.

Outside, Mr. Davenport and Tasha walk up to the front door. "Well, Tasha, looks like the stupid computer got you home safe! Guess it's time to go back in the wall." Eddy says on Mr. Davenport's tablet.

"Oh! Here, let me help." Tasha says. Eddy screams when she throws the tablet against the concrete wall.

"Well, it certainly has been a joy traveling with you two." Mr. Davenport says. They walk into the house.

"You are on the list, cupcake!" Eddy says, appearing on the screen in the living room.

"Okay!" Tasha shouts as Eddy signs off.

"Hey, what do you know? The house is in one piece." Mr. Davenport says.

"Welcome home, mommy," Leo says. He grimaces when he says mommy and hugs Tasha.

"Okay...what are you guys up to?" Tasha asks.

"Just chillin'. Ya know. We didn't do anything. Nothing happened. Nothing at all. You two...always so suspicious." Bree says, pointing at Tasha and Mr. Davenport. She sees the fake nails she was still wearing when she went to New Jersey and hides her hands behind her back.

"Hmm. I don't smell any fires...and no one's in a full-body cast. Wait...where's Adam?" Mr. Davenport says when he sees that Adam was missing.

"Adam? Uh, Adam is..." I begin to say. Adam walks into the living room.

"Right here warming up your welcome home hugs. Bring it in, peoples!" Adam says. He hugs Tasha and Mr. Davenport. "Ooh! Okay." He stands next to us.

"Well, I guess we overreacted." Mr. Davenport says.

"Right. I will go reschedule our trip to Australia. This time on a big plane with an actual pilot." Tasha says. We start to hear a beeping noise. "What is that?" The drone crashes into the living room through the roof.

"By the way, we forgot to reset the coordinates," Adam says to Chase.

"Reset the coordinates?! It looks like somebody touched my stuff!" Mr. Davenport shouts.

"Mommy," Leo says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Down in the lab, as Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, and I were talking to each other, Mr. Davenport walked in. "So nothing else happened while I was gone?"

"No. Just the drone thing." I say.

"Yep, just that drone thing," Chase says.

"Just the drone thing." Mr. Davenport laughs. "Ahh. Anybody want to see a slide show?"

"Ooh! Is it Australia?" Bree says.

"No! Ha, ha! It's my surveillance cameras that show everybody's movements throughout the entire house." Mr. Davenport says, turning on the security screens. "Huh. I never thought of using my priceless guitar as a hammer." A picture of Adam, Bree, Chase, and I show up playing with Mr. Davenport's guitars. "Hey. What happens if I stick my head in here?" A picture shows Chase and me stuck between the lab doors.

"Now that my hair's big, I can get on all the rides." A picture shows Bree in her New Jersey look. "Here we are exploring the deep, dark waters of idiocy." A picture shows Adam and Chase on a life raft, wearing water masks and pretending to swim underwater. "And look. I didn't know we had a peanut butter monster hiding in the lab." A picture shows me covered head to toe in peanut butter and hiding from Chase and Adam as they were on the life raft. "Ha, ha, ha! Heh..."

"So..." I say.

"Uh, so, you're all grounded...forever!" Mr. Davenport says. He laughs and walks out of the lab.
