Crush, Chop and Burn, Part 2

The next morning, the four of us, including Leo, were in the lab as we watched Chase pick up a stapler and put it in a container he was holding. "What're you doing?" Leo asks. He was sitting on a counter next to Bree while Adam and I were sitting on chairs.

"If Davenport is gonna ship us off to some remote facility, then the office supplies are coming with us," Chase says as he throws a pencil holder into the container.

"We just got our first taste of normal life. I was this close to getting a curfew which I was totally gonna break." Bree says.

"Ooh! But maybe when we get to wherever we're going, we'll meet a sassy lab chimp named Bobo who will take us on adventures and teach us how to love." Adam says.

"Or maybe you'll make him angry and he'll maul you and snack on your fingers," I say. I try to reach for a protein pellet from a bowl Adam was eating out of, but he snatches it away.

"Hey. I create the monkey fantasies around here." He says.

Chase and I sit on the counter with Bree and Leo when Eddy appears on a screen in the lab. "Well, kids, I hope you've enjoyed your stay at casa Davenport. I know I haven't. Sayonara!"

"Eddy, I know we've never been the best of friends, but we're gonna miss you," Bree says.

"Aw, really?" Eddy asks.

"No!" Adam says.

"We hate you!" Bree says.

"You're evil!" Chase says.

"He's the devil!" I say.

"Where is this training facility anyway?" Leo asks.

"Facility X? Oh, it's all the rage." Eddy says. A picture of a beautiful island appears on the screen.

"That's pretty nice," Chase says, turning to me.

"Oops! Sorry! That's my screen saver. You're going here." Eddy says. He shows us a picture of an icy wasteland.

"Forget about office supplies. We should be gathering wood." Chase says.

"Man. I wish I hadn't thrown that party. I can't help but think this is all my fault." Leo says as he, Bree, Chase, and I get off the counter.

"Oh, that's because it is all your fault," Adam says. I slap his arm.

"Adam, he was only trying to help us," I say.

"Well, yeah, but he did the opposite, which is not help us," Adam says. "The not makes it the opposite. I'm just so bummed. It's the only place we've ever known."

"Yeah. Just think about all the memories we've shared here." Chase says. The four of us flashback to the time we were little and Mr. Davenport was reading us a story.

{*}

"If the atom has too many or too few electrons, the atom is called an ion, and it has a positive or a negative charge. And that's how batteries are made. The end." Mr. Davenport reads from the book he was reading to us.

A young Adam gets up and uses his super strength to pick up Mr. Davenport as he sits in his chair. "Whoa, whoa. Okay, Adam. You can put me down now." Young Adam puts Mr. Davenport down. I get up from my spot and grab the book from Mr. Davenport.

"Hey! Come back with that! Come back with that book! Cassie!" Mr. Davenport says. I laugh and phase through the lab doors. Mr. Davenport gets up from his chair and attempts to go after me when a young Bree starts super-speeding around in the lab. "Bree, please stop super speeding in the lab. You're kicking up all this dust, you're gonna make Chase's super senses glitch, and he's gonna..."

Before Mr. Davenport could finish what he was saying, a young Chase sneezes, and snot splatters all over Mr. Davenport. "Sneeze." Mr. Davenport says. I come back into the lab and laugh when I see the snot all over my father.

{*}

"I can't let Davenport send you guys away," Leo says. "Let me talk to him. No one can say no to this million-dollar smile."

Downstairs, Mr. Davenport says no when Leo asks him about letting Adam, Bree, Chase, and I stay. "But what if..."

"Uh-uh."

"Don't you think..."

"Forget it."

"What if you..."

"La, la, la!" Mr. Davenport sings, covering his ears and running away from Leo as he chases him upstairs. Leo walks back down to the lab. "Well...I'm pretty sure he's gonna think about it."

~*~*~*~*~*~

Leo was sitting by himself in the living room when Tasha walks up to him. "Leo, there you are. Honey, I know you're sad about your friends leaving. But think of all the time you'll get to spend with me. Ooh! We can play your little video game. You know, the one where you hold the thingy and you move the other thingy."

"Mom, with all due respect, it is way too late in life for you to play video games," Leo says. He gets up from the chair. Leo and Tasha see Mr. Davenport standing next to a sheet that was hanging in the room. "Good morning, happy family."

"What is that?" Tasha asks.

"Whatever it is, don't get too attached," Leo says.

"Look, Leo, I know you're gonna miss Adam, Bree, Chase, and Cassie. So, I laser scanned their features onto these bio-synthetic robots and I programmed them with their core personality traits." Mr. Davenport says, pulling down the sheet and revealing the four robots that looked exactly like my siblings and me. "Is this great or what? It'll be like they never left."

Leo knocked on the Adam robot and it flicked him on the head. "What do you think?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"I think the excitement of having a billionaire dad just wore off," Leo says.

"Donald, I don't know about this. I kind of prefer Leo to have friends who can't malfunction and tear him limb from limb." Tasha says.

Adam, Bree, Chase, and I walk into the living room, and we see the robots. "What are those?" Bree asks.

"Oh, Dr. Franken Brain here is trying to replace you with creepy robots. Welcome to crazy town." Leo says.

Robot Adam looks at us. "Good morning. The time is 11:22 and the temperature is currently 68 degrees."

"You made a robot of me that just stands around telling people the time and the temperature?" Adam asks. Mr. Davenport nods his head. "That's the coolest thing I've ever seen!" Adam tries to give his robot self a high five, but the robot doesn't return it. Bree walks up to the robot Bree.

"Does my nose really look like that?" Bree asks.

"No. Yours has a faint mustache underneath." Robot Bree answers. Adam, Chase, Leo, and I start to laugh.

"My name is Cassie. I hate the color pink and like to play sports. I also like to watch dog farts on the Internet and I'm lazy." Robot me says.

Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo laugh while I just shrug my shoulders. "Eh, accurate."

"Hey, everyone. I'm Chase. Let's do, ma...ma...math." Robot Chase says as he malfunctions, but Mr. Davenport fixes him by hitting him. Adam, Bree, Leo, and I laugh at Chase.

"That is not funny," Chase says.

"No, you're right. It's fuh...fuh...funny." Adam says, mimicking Robot Chase's malfunction. Chase frowns and crosses his arms. The doorbell rings and Mr. Davenport opens the door. We see a man dressed in a black suit and glasses.

"Hey, Fitz. How's it going? How's life? How's tricks? Alrighty then. You guys should've seen him at the Christmas party. He's a karaoke master." Mr. Davenport says.

"Well, I guess this is it. Thanks for everything, Leo." Bree says.

"Yeah, you're the best friend we've ever had," Chase says.

"No, he's the only friend we've ever had," Adam says.

"Well, don't forget to bundle up on your deadly missions," Tasha says, hugging us. The four of us begin to walk toward the front door.

"Hey, remember, this is a good thing. Without any distractions, you might finish your training early." Mr. Davenport says. Before we walked out the door, I run over to Leo and hugged him.

"I'm going to miss you, Leo," I say.

"Me, too," Leo says.

Once I pulled away, the four of us leave the house. Eddy appears on the small screen in the living room. "Whoo-hoo! They're gone!"

"Eddy." Mr. Davenport says.

"I mean, have a safe trip. I love you." Eddy says before logging off.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Leo walks down to the lab where he sees the four robots standing in the lab. "Hello, insert name here. Would you like to engage in silly, happy, fun time?" Robot Adam says.

"Get lost," Leo says. "You can't replace my real friends. I really loved those guys."

"Don't be sad, Mr. Leo. Friends come and go. But robots are forever." Robot Chase says. "Dibbly. Dibbly. That is my version of a laugh. Dibbly. Dibbly."

"Will you tin heads get out of here?" Leo says.

"Sensing human hostility." Robot Chase says.

"Must exterminate." Robot me says.

"Robots attack." Robot Adam says as the four robots come toward Leo.

"Yeah, go robots! Get him! Crush him!" Eddy says. "Go for the brain!"

"Destroy Leo. Destroy Leo." The robots say as they surround Leo. Leo screams like a girl when Robot Bree grabs him and the four of us start to laugh.

"Leo, Leo. We're not robots. It's really us." Bree says.

"Huh?" Leo asks, confused.

"We told the driver we forgot something, and then we swapped the robots in our place," Chase says.

"You said you loved us. You said you loved us." Adam says, making kissing faces. Leo slaps Adam in the face. "Ow!" Adam shouts.

"It is you guys!" Leo exclaimed, hugging Adam. Bree, Chase, and I join in.

"Wait, what about Mr. Davenport?" Leo asks once we pulled away from each other.

"We'll just have to act like dumb robots every single time he's around," Adam says.

"It'll be easier for some of us than others," I say, looking at Adam.

"Hey, Leo." Mr. Davenport says, walking into the lab. The four of us quickly stand in our robot poses.

"Big D, Donny, man of the house!" Leo says.

"What're you doing, buddy?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"What am I doing? I am hanging with my robo-fake people friends." Leo says. "Ain't no party like a robot party 'cause a robot party don't stop."

"See, I told you you would like them." Mr. Davenport says.

"Like 'em? I love 'em!" Leo says. Adam starts making kissing faces when Mr. Davenport turns around. Leo makes a cut it out motion with his hand and Adam stops when Mr. Davenport turns back around.

"Oh, you know what the greatest thing about having robots is?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"What?" Leo asks.

"They are virtually indestructible." Mr. Davenport says.

"Huh?"

"Watch this." Mr. Davenport takes out a taser and shocks Adam.

"Hey, quit it!" Leo shouts.

"No, it's okay. He can't feel a thing. He's a robot." Mr. Davenport says. He shocks Chase.

"Ha, ha! They're so incredibly lifelike!" Mr. Davenport says. He shocks me and I lean on Chase's shoulder before I could hit the ground. He tries to shock Bree.

"Don't even try it." She says.

"Ooh, you're a feisty robot, you." Mr. Davenport says. He looks at Leo. "You wanna give it a try?"

"No, I'm fine," Leo says.

"Come on, do it." Mr. Davenport says. "Just do it once. It's a lot of fun."

"Fine!" Leo says. He takes the device and shocks Mr. Davenport, making him fall to the ground. "You're right. It is fun."

Adam, Bree, Chase, and I smile as Mr. Davenport groaned in pain on the ground.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Upstairs in the living room, Adam, Bree, Chase, and I were sitting in the kitchen as Leo was preparing us breakfast. "All right, let's make this quick so we can get out of here," Leo says. "Adam, for breakfast, you get wheat bread and a side of sugar packets."

"My favorite!" Adam says.

"Bree, you get two old wings and a drumstick from the Chicken Shack," Leo says.

"Ooh!" Bree says excitedly.

"Cassie, you get four dried-up apple slices and a soggy waffle that was left in the refrigerator for three days," Leo says.

"Right on, little man," I say.

"And Chase, you can have the peel to my banana."

"I'm not eating a banana peel," Chase says.

"You don't eat it. You just chew it till all the flavor's gone." Leo says.

"Leo! What's going on?" Tasha says as she walks into the kitchen, making the four of us do our robot poses.

"Mom! Look at you. In the kitchen." Leo laughs nervously. "We are just having a healthy breakfast."

"Honey, they're robots. They don't eat." Tasha says. When she turns around, we quickly eat our breakfast. We immediately stop when she turns back around and pours herself a glass of orange juice.

"All right, anyway, I was thinking, today might be a good day to take them to school with me," Leo says.

"Yes!" Bree shouts. Tasha gives her a confused look. Bree starts pretending to be a robot. "I mean, bee-dee-beep. Dee-dee-beep beep. Beep." She gives Tasha an awkward wave.

"Leo, you're not taking robots to school. Your teachers already think you're a little weird." Tasha says.

"What makes you say that?" Leo asks.

"Because on your last progress report, it said we think Leo's a little weird," Tasha says.

"Mom..."

"Go to school."

"Fine." Leo groans. He turns to look at Adam, Bree, Chase, and me. "You guys stay out of trouble until I get back home. Hug it out." Leo hugs us, making Tasha give us a weird look. Leo grabs his backpack and leaves the house.

Mr. Davenport walks into the living room and sits on the couch. "Hey, honey."

"Donald, you have got to get rid of those robots. Leo thinks they're real." Tasha says sitting on the couch next to Mr. Davenport. "He needs to be around normal kids."

"Honey, when I was growing up, I never hung out with normal kids." Mr. Davenport says.

"And your best friend is a computer in the wall," Tasha says.

"I guess you lost that battle. Huh, Tasha?" Eddy says.

"Donald, I don't want them around. They're...creepy." Tasha says.

"Well, what am I supposed to do? Just throw them away?" Mr. Davenport asks. The four of us gasp.

"No. I would never expect you to just throw them away." Tasha says, making us sigh with relief. "Recycle them." The four of us gasp again.

"Wait, you want me to take my genius technology and have it crushed and melted down and turned into hubcaps? No way." Mr. Davenport says. We sigh with relief again.

"Either they go, or I turn your lab into my walk-in closet," Tasha says.

"Four crushed robots coming up." Mr. Davenport says. This time only Bree, Chase, and I gasp.

"What? He said he was getting rid of the robots." Adam says. "Ye...oh!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When school was over, Leo runs back to the house and sees his mom and Mr. Davenport in the kitchen. "Where are the robots? I ran all the way home, and I wasn't even being chased!"

Mr. Davenport pours a glass of water for Leo and hands it to him. "Leo, the robots are gone. We just dropped them off at the recycling facility." Tasha says, making Leo spit out his water.

"You what?" Leo says.

"Yep. They're being melted down as we speak." Mr. Davenport says. "Don't tell anybody. They're probably toxic."

"No! We have to go get them!" Leo shouts. "They're not robots, they're real!"

"Okay, see, this is why I didn't want those things around. He's delusional." Tasha says.

"No. It's really Adam, Bree, Chase, and Cassie. You have to believe me! There isn't much time!" Leo says.

"Leo, stop," Tasha says.

"Leo, when I was your age, I had to say goodbye to a lot of my friends. There was Lava Man and Stretch Legstrong and Jo Jo Biggs and all of his friends in the Space Cantina." Mr. Davenport says.

"Those are all action figures," Leo says.

"More like fully poseable pieces of my heart." Mr. Davenport says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When we arrive at the recycling facility, Adam, Bree, Chase, and I scream as we fall into the garbage shoot.

"That was awesome!" Adam exclaimed as we all stand up.

"Great plan, Adam. Let's just hide in the recycling truck and see where we end up." Bree says.

"Well, who could've predicted that the recycling truck would dump us in the recycling center?" Adam asks.

"I had my suspicions," Chase says. "Look, we have to find a way out of this place."

"Yeah, I wanna go home," I say.

"We can't go home. If Davenport sees us, he's just gonna try and send us away again." Chase says.

"Oh, right. Well, then let's just go find a new scientist/father with a high-tech basement lab and live there." I say. "You know? Done and done."

"Look! There's a door right there!" Bree says.

"Oh, come on," Adam says.

We begin to walk toward the exit, but stop when a giant crusher comes down from the ceiling and starts smashing the pile of garbage that was coming out. Adam picks up a metal object and throws it at the giant crusher and the crusher smashes the object.

"Well, Bree, you're the fastest, so you should go first," Adam says, pushing her forward.

"You know what? There's plenty of distance between us and that. We're fine." Chase says. Adam and I scream when air shoots from behind us and the wall in the garbage shoot starts moving toward us. "And by fine I mean we're all gonna die!" We all scream.

Back in the lab, Tasha walks in when an alarm goes off. "Intruder! Intruder!" Eddy says.

"Eddy, it's just Tasha." Mr. Davenport says.

"Oh," Eddy says. The alarm turns on again. "Intruder! Intruder!" Tasha gives him a look.

Mr. Davenport's phone rings. He pulls out a tiny phone and answers it. "Hello? Yeah, I'll accept a collect call from Facility X. Fitz, I know it's you. I can hear you breathing. You what? What're you talking about? What kind of an idiot doesn't know the difference between a robot and a bionic superhum...you know what? Don't answer that question." Mr. Davenport hangs up the phone and turns to Tasha. "The kids never showed up. They sent the robots in their place."

Tasha gasps. "So, Leo was..."

"Telling the truth the whole time." Mr. Davenport says.

"Eddy, where's Leo?" Tasha asks.

"Oh, he left. Something about a recycling center, neglectful parents, life and death, blah, blah, blah." Eddy says.

"Why didn't you tell us any of this?" Mr. Davenport asks.

"You didn't ask," Eddy says. Mr. Davenport and Tasha leave the lab.

Back at the recycling center, Bree, Chase, and I were trying to keep the wall from moving while Adam was looking through the garbage bags. He finds a pair of blue jeans. "Ooh, five pockets. Hey, you guys think I should try this on?" Chase gives Adam a look and throws the pair of jeans on the floor. Using his super sight, Chase calculates the speed of the crusher.

"Okay. It takes three seconds to clear the crusher." Chase says. "Adam, if you time it right, you can use your super strength to resist the force and we can all slide under it."

"Yeah, but what if I don't time it right?" Adam asks.

"Try to time it right," Chase says.

Adam steps under the crusher and uses his super strength to hold it up as Bree, Chase, and I run past the crusher.

"Now what?" I ask. Suddenly, two sharp metal jaws appear from the side walls of the garbage shoot. "Okay, once these jaws close, we have exactly 1.7 seconds to get through," Chase says.

"I got this. Grab on." Bree says. Adam, Chase, and I hold onto Bree as she super speeds us through the metal jaws. "Okay, now all we have to do is get past this fire and we're home free."

"Oh, it's nothing. It's just a little..." I stop mid-sentence when the fire grows bigger. "Whoa. Never mind."

"What are we gonna do?" Bree says, panicking.

"Look, okay, if we're not gonna try to escape, I'm gonna go back for my jeans," Adam says.

"Adam!" I say, grabbing his arm and pulling him back. We look at Chase who was about to sneeze. "Chase, what's wrong?" I ask.

"All this burning trash is making my super senses...aaa-choo!" Chase sneezes and takes out the fire. "Glitch."

"Sweet. You put it out with your snot cannons." Adam says.

"Come on, guys. Let's get out of here." I say. When we reach the door, we turn around when we hear someone screaming and see Leo fall through the garbage shoot.

"Leo?" Adam says.

"No. It's Oprah. Get me out of here!" Leo shouts.

The front door opens and Mr. Davenport and Tasha walk into the facility. "Mr. Davenport!" I exclaimed.

"Hello, we are robots," Adam says in a robot voice.

"Dude, I think he knows," Chase says.

"Well, now he does," Adam says. Air starts filling the garbage shoot and the wall begins to move again. Leo starts screaming.

"Leo!" Tasha shouts.

"I'll go find somebody to shut it off." Mr. Davenport says.

"There isn't enough time!" Bree says.

"Guys, I have an idea," I say.

Not long after, Adam, Bree, Chase, and I were falling through the shoot again and landed next to Leo. "Ah, it never gets old," Adam says as we get up.

"Leo. What're you doing here?" Chase asks.

"I came to save you guys," Leo says.

"Oh, thanks. We're good. Ha. Sweet kid." Adam says.

"Come on, let's do this," Bree says.

"Okay, Leo, hold on to Adam. We're gonna surround you and then we'll all go through it together, okay?" Chase says. "Three, two..."

"Hey, what's that?" I ask, walking up to a red button. I press it and the garbage shoot turns off.

"That would be the off button," Chase says.

"Yeah. Oh, you guys didn't see that?" Adam says.

~*~*~*~*~*~

We made it back to the house exhausted after what happened at the recycling center. "Oh, thank heavens! You all made it home safe and sound and..." Eddy blows a raspberry as Mr. Davenport shuts him off.

"I don't know what you kids were thinking pulling a stunt like that." Mr. Davenport says. "You could have seriously hurt yourselves."

"Yeah, but you gotta admit, my robot accent was dead on," Adam says as the four of us sit on the couch.

"Can we please take him back to the recycling center?" I ask.

"And, Leo, why didn't you tell us that Adam, Bree, Chase, and Cassie were still here?" Tasha asks.

"Because I was trying to protect my friends," Leo says. He walks up to Mr. Davenport. "And I'm still gonna protect my friends. That's right. You wanna send them away, you have to go through me first. It's go time, little man. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. There's a lot of fight in this little doggie. Come on! Uh-huh! Dad."

"Leo, calm down. They're not going anywhere." Mr. Davenport says.

"Oh, don't you...wait, what?" Leo says.

"Watching you guys risk your lives for each other made me realize something." Mr. Davenport says. "Maybe I've been focusing too much on training the superhuman side of you, and I forgot all about the human part."

"Aww. I don't get it." Adam says.

"You're teenagers. And bionic or not, you deserve to experience teenager things." Mr. Davenport says. "Like school and classes and cell phones."

"Yes! A cell phone! I'm living the dream. Whoo!" Bree says.

"Yeah, you're not getting a cell phone." Mr. Davenport says. "But what I can give you is another chance. Maybe there's a way that you can live here, go to school and go on missions."

"Are you serious?" Chase asks as the four of us stand up.

"So they can stay?" Leo asks.

"On one condition, no one can ever find out about your abilities. And you have to control your emotions so you don't glitch." Mr. Davenport says.

"Done," Chase says.

"Absolutely," Bree says.

"Okay," Adam says.

"I'm in," I say.

"All right, then, welcome home." Mr. Davenport says.

"Whoo-hoo! Yeah!" Adam shouts. He pumps his fists in the air and we all duck when he accidentally fires plasma grenades from his hands. The blasts hit the ceiling and destroys the glass dining room table. "Whoops!"

"He has plasma grenades? My life just got a whole lot better." Leo says.

~*~*~*~*~*~*

"You know, I'm just not sure about the throw pillows. They're a little plain. So, I got these. Are they too busy?" Tasha says as she and Mr. Davenport sit in the living room.

"No." Mr. Davenport says.

"So you like them?" Tasha says.

"I do if you do." Mr. Davenport says.

"You are so sweet," Tasha says.

Down in the lab, Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, the real Mr. Davenport and I were laughing when we watch Tasha about to kiss the robot Mr. Davenport. "That robot may be my greatest invention ever." Mr. Davenport says. As Tasha kisses the robot, it starts smoking and malfunctioning.

"What the...Donald!" Tasha shouts.

Back in the lab, Mr. Davenport gets up from his chair and runs out of the lab. "Uh-oh, busted!" We all shouted.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A/N: Adam, Bree, Chase, and Cassie get to stay at Mr. Davenport's house for good! Yay! Now they can go to school and know what it's like to be real teenagers!
