Chapter 12

****

That day, I recall, that they were laughing, holding hands

So in love

It's impossible to forget that day

Who dare could forget?

Even I, Death, mourn at the memory

My own fault, along with many others

A day called tragedy... with a pinch of ignorance

It was raining in your world

"Are you sure?" Natsu asked Gray. The two were hand in hand, strolling through the paths of The Garden of FairyTail, they walked towards Mavis' palace for a special meeting she had announced. Smiles blessed upon their lips and glee spread over their faces. Their eyes, oh their eyes, I knew the sun and stars all sighed in envy, for nothing could outshine the love, joy and brilliance that lay in their eyes.

Sweet nothings and soothing everything's being whispered into one another's ears as they used it as an excuse to pull the other one closer. Closer and closer. They would not let go of the one thing they had left... In this cruel reality.

They wonder what is good. Their whole lives all they knew was seconds of joy that was stripped away to lead to what felt like an eternity of sorrow. There was no balance in their lives, so they clung onto what they believed was the only good thing in one another's lives- each other.

People often take what they have for granted and it's only after when they lose it that they realise how precious it was. Natsu, Ruler of Hell and former Angel, knew the feeling all too well and for that reason he held onto Gray. He would not take what he loves for granted anymore. I remember the look in his eyes that day, he wanted to treasure every second, minute or millennia he had with Gray, as though it was his last.

Gray, Ruler of Heaven and a Demon from Chaos, was very different. Due to not having anything to love from the second he was born, he knew the true meaning of loneliness, like a beautiful rose amongst jealous daisies- he was different. For that sole reason, he knew that this chance of being able to love someone and know that the love was returned for the first time of his life, he knew he had to bless and be thankful for that chance. He wanted to treasure every second, minute or millennia he had with Natsu, as though it was his last.

I remember them walking into the Palace laughing, so much goodness in their eyes. No evil sat in their hearts, yet the punishment thatv await them was because they were they. As usual, they only knew seconds of joy... As usual, it was stripped away.

"Yes, I am certain. I want the whole world to know, I am yours and you are mine," is what Gray said in answer to Natsu's question. It's the first words everyone heard as they walked into the Palace. They were so happy yet every Guardian who sat on a throne, including my dear Mavis, looked away in pure disgusted horror and overwhelming guilt. Sting, Natsu's former lackey and Day, began to cry. Even the great Erza's body began to tremble.

Natsu beamed at the words. He looked so happy... As did Gray.

However, I have warned you, mortals, since the beginning of this fairytail, there is no happy ending to this story.

Zeref, Lord of Chaos, came in.

He wore calamitously black robes to match his untamable mass of raven-like locks. His pale skin, white and inhumanely cold as snow. His dead, lifeless eyes and the thin knife-slit across his lower face of a mouth. Fingers of darkness clawed up from beneath him and snapped at anything close by. Yet, he too looked so sad...

I knew, Natsu knew, the second Zeref appeared this mirage called happiness would end as it has always ended- short, abrupt but so painful.

What really tore my heart- I may be Death, but I have feelings too- What tore it to shreds and then some more, was the smile that still clung to Gray's face. The smile he held as his eyes were mesmerised by the fact that his hand was being held by someone he loved so dearly. That they shimmered so much, I swore I saw ruby red hearts in his cerulean blue eyes.

"You're Zeref," Natsu announced out loud. No one shook in fear which what should have happened, but tormenting sadness and overwhelming guilt are all they felt. I remember Gray looking up but not as Zeref, he looked at Natsu and said something along the lines of, 'you can use contractions? Wow!' He still didn't know. He never knew the feeling of loss since all he felt was loneliness...

"I am. And I guess you know why I am here?"Natsu's eyes fell upon Gray's. Gray was still smiling and he squeezed Natsu's hand in reassurance. It was a rare, rare thing for either to cry, but for the first time in a long time, Natsu cried.

"Yes," he answered, after aeons, of what was actually minutes, had passed.

"What's going on-"

"You are two of the only Guardians of Time," Zeref began, interrupting Gray, as Zeref's eyes filled with regret, sadness and grief. "Leaders of Hell and Heaven, of Order and Chaos. You are both on the opposite ends of the spectrum, the complete and utter opposites. There is no in-between. Everything that is opposite is not as different as the power each of you has and holds. One born from flames of Order, the other from the snow of Chaos."

"What exactly-" Gray muttered as his eyes grew wild with confusion and he held Natsu's hand a little tighter, each word that was said, each second that passed, he held tighter and pulled the other closer... in fear.

"Unlike Sting and Rogue, Day and Night. Together they may cause a little imbalance, but dawn and dusk exist, a time where they can meet. They are not as far apart as the two of you. In all these realities, must there exist something, anything, that is the complete opposite, two things that are undeniably incompatible? Two things that if together will cause a substantial imbalance between Chaos and Order, leading realities to collapse, one after the other, till we are back to square one, and Chaos and Order are battling, the same way they were before time was even flowing? Two young lovers who cannot be with one another, for the greater good."

"No, I won't leave him." The words left his lips as flames began to lick his body. Rage filled Natsu as he became well aware of how hopeless the situation was. He knew... He knew soon it would be over. "I'm all fired up and ready to beat the hell out of you if I have to."

"You will not fight me, or risk both of you getting severely hurt. Say your goodbyes in a peaceful manner-"

"NO! NO! NO! NO!" Gray screamed. His ice cracking the floor till it reached Mavis. Shards of ice stuck out of the ground like deadly spears. Yet she did not resist. Like the rest of the Guardians, she sat, tears streaked her face and pain filled her heart. Guilt, overwhelming guilt possessed her and forced her into an arduous torture. Fire burnt at her satin clothes but she did not move.

What is good? Define good?

A long time ago, Natsu wondered what made him evil The mortals often viewed him as satan, although he wasn't. He was the Guardian of Time. Evil is when someone commits immoral actions. He was unsure that this was the real definition. He didn't listen, when Mavis told him aeons ago.

He committed one sin, but forever and always will he be punished.

The only sin that was done that day was done by everyone but the ones who were being punished. We all sat, some of us Guardians shed tears whilst others didn't dare look...

... As  Zeref pried them apart.

Using his darkness, his chaotic magic, he pulled Gray towards himself. Gray would stay whilst Natsu would be sent back to Hell, forever.

It was a painful thing to watch. They screamed and screamed and screamed. Zeref's magic, even one touch compelled you to scream in agony, as your mind would eat at itself and your heart would attempt to stop beating, trying to end your suffering and your esseence would ebb away as fast as it could, so you could disappear. Zeref's magic was the worst.

But that wasn't the reason they hurt, begged, screamed, cried, bled...

I remember there was this second, that they pushed and fought back hard enough, their eyes set to one another's eyes. A little bit of hope, a kindle of light shone for a mere few seconds- they were able to grab hold onto one another's arms. Pulling and pulling till they were in each others embrace.  Sweet nothings and soothing everything's of 'i love you' being whispered into one another's ears as they used it but not as an excuse to pull the other one closer, but to hold onto the one they called dear for the last time. Closer and closer. They would not let go of the one thing they had left, all they had left. They knew it would end. Small kisses and interwind hands, the last time...

And Zeref pulled them apart again, and my heart stopped, it hurt so much and it cried. I wanted to rip it out so they pain would stop... But I do wonder if I hurt that much, what did their hearts do?

And the doors of Hell were brought forth, Natsu was thrown in.

Gray stopped. His crying siezed.

But it was raining in your world
