Part 15

Cain nodded and took off down the hall. Swallowing, he decided to check the lab first since it was closer, but just as he was headed down the stairs; something in the moonlight caught his eye. Turning, he strode over and knelt down. Letting out a breath, he picked up the discarded white and gold mask, looking up in the direction of Glitch's rooms. In reality, the mask was too far to one side to have landed there if he'd thrown it when going down the stairs...

"Glitch!" Cain called when he reached the door DG had indicated, and pounded on it.

"Go away!" came the muffled response.

"No, Glitch, I'm not leaving. Open the door!" Cain called back. "Look, I know it was you..."

"H-how?" Glitch's muffled voice came through the door.

Cain sighed and ran his fingers through his hair as he wracked his brain for some way to make it all up to him, to apologize for his stupidity. He leaned his body flush against the door so the other man could hear him without yelling. "DG," he said softly.

"It's her, isn't it?"

Cain blinked in surprise. "What?"

"It's her... she was the one you were talking about, weren't you? The one your heart belongs to... I should have guessed really... I mean, after all, you always came to her rescue... There – there's just one thing I don't understand... if your heart belongs to her, why did you even dance with me?" Glitch's voice sound muffled through the door once more

"What?" Cain couldn't help but ask again. "No!" he cried in disbelief when he realized a moment later what Glitch meant. "It's not like that... she's just a kid. Look, I know it was you because she told me... at – at the dance when you ran... I – I followed and she yelled at me... she didn't say it was you, but I guessed from what she said, and – and I'm sorry I'm such an idiot, Glitch."

"S-so..." Glitch's voice came through the door. "Y-you hate me now... what else is new? I should have figured that out too... we never really talk any more... I – I mean, this is the longest we've talked in a long while, Cain... it really wouldn't surprise me..."

Cain sighed and closed his eyes. "Would you please open the door?" There was no response and Cain exhaled heavily, his palm flat to the door as was his ear, his other hand grasping the door frame. Swallowing, he tried again. "Did – did you really mean what you said, Glitch?" he asked softly. "What you wrote... what you mimed?"

"Yes..."came the tearful reply a moment later.

Cain released a shaky breath. "I did too," he murmured. "When I said that my heart belonged to someone else, Glitch... If I'd known it was you... if you'd let me explain... if you'd let me finish what I was saying last night, you'd know..."

There was silence for a beat and then the tearful voice returned, "Know what?"

Cain sighed. "DG didn't tell you either..." he murmured through the door. "She told me she probably should have to prevent this from happening but she didn't because she thought it was better coming from me..."

More silence, then a soft "What?" reached his ears and he knew the man was listening, probably just on the other side of the door.

"I – I had no idea, Glitch..." he murmured. "If I had known it was you... if I had waited to find out... I never would have done that, Glitch."

"Y-you wouldn't?" the soft voice asked.

Cain shook his head, but then realized the man couldn't see him. "No," he said. "Why would I turn away the only other person I have ever loved?"

He waited with baited breath as the silence dragged on, then a soft, disbelieving, "You love me?" came back through the door.

Cain smiled. "Why don't you open the door and find out?"
