Talk It Out

"Hayley, we're talking this out and coming to a reasonable conclusion." Derek approached his wife one day while the kids were out with Aunt Jules and they were home.

"There's nothing to talk about." She kept her focus on the plates she was washing.

"Okay..." Derek mumbled under his breath and turned the faucet off.

"Um, okay?" Hayley turned to face Derek. "That was for what purpose exactly?" She turned the faucet so the water would start running again.

"Why are you being like this?" He pulled her into the hallway so she couldn't get distracted by the dishes in front of her.

"I'm not being like anything!"

"Really? Really? You're saying that this isn't anything?"

"It's not!" She snapped.

"Call me crazy, but wouldn't going on this--" Derek tried to get back on track of this conversation.

"You're crazy! You're absolutely crazy! Has it not crossed your mind that maybe we still have a family to support, and you can't just drop everything and throw all of us into a situation like a full tour!" Hayley shook her head. "Did you ever think about me? Or the kids? Or us? Did you think about us?"

"What about us?" Derek began to get concerned to what she was alluding to.

"That maybe we should have never done this."

"Hayley, Love, you're making no sense here."

"That maybe we shouldn't have restarted and gotten married because there was something deep inside of me that said you'd do this again, that you'd get back in too deep into work and then just stay there! You wouldn't come back to help the family or me or the kids or anybody! I knew you'd do this again!" Hayley grabbed her coat and keys from the hook by the door.

"Where are you going?" Derek asked her.

"Somewhere!" She responded, not bothering to turn around to look at him.

Derek stood there, in the middle of the hallway, confused to say the least, but he was brought back when Jules and the kids came through the door.

"Hey, D!" Julianne called but stopped when she saw the situation. "What happened here?"

"I don't really know."

"Where's Hay?"

"You know, Julianne! I don't really know that either!" He snapped, but quickly realized what had just happened.

"Okay, I don't know what happened or why you're like this, but do you want me to take the kids tonight? You seem like you need to...sort some things out." She winced at his coming response.

"Could you?" He asked her.

"Of course. Always."

"Thank you."

"Yeah." She looked at him slightly skeptically, but went on with what she was saying. "Just...take care of yourself, alright?"

He nodded and Julianne left with the kids.

Derek walked back into the kitchen and shut the still running faucet off.

Now everything was silent. And he didn't know if he liked it or not.
