Chapter 24.

"Ok, this should do it" you take a step back from the trap and look over it. The old metal bear trap creeks a bit from the weight of the meat. You felt a bit uneasy about the thing, its jaws were very sharp and you can actually testify that.

While you were setting up the trap earlier, Tynan was walking around the area. You had no clue for what purpose exactly, maybe just to scout out the surroundings. Stretching the metal rings wide you try to be as careful as possible, wouldn't want to lose your fingers now would you?

Wind brushes your hair and you hear slight creaking from the surrounding trees as their branches are swaying. Unwrapping the meat you gently place it in the centre of the trap.

"So-"

"FUCK!"

You jump abruptly and stumble back on the ground. Eyes wide, whole body shaking you look to the side, at Tynan.

" DON'T SNEAK UP ON ME LIKE THAT!" your voice cracks a bit from shouting and you look at your hand and see a small line of blood dripping down your finger. Bringing your legs towards your chest you hug them and steady your breathing. Sitting for a bit you relax and something soft bumps into your shoulder. Looking up you see the demon with your first aid kit:

"May I patch it up for you?"

"....fine"

So here you were, still with a hand, a bandaged finger, wiping sweat from your forehead. You covered the trap with strands of grass leaving the meat visible. The only part left was to wait for night to fall, hide nearby and hope it takes the bait.

"I know it's too late to ask but do you think this will work?" spinning around you see Tynan's back as he observes something far away from both of you. His hands seemed to be occupied with something as they were not in his pockets as usual.

"I've scented the surrounding area so it should come here~"

"Scented? Do you have some meat on you or-" you stop talking and just stare at the thing in Tynan's hands as he turns around.

"Something the matter?~" he asks as blood drips from the foot of the rabbit. His question sounded so innocent yet you felt in your mind that he was amused by this. If he could hear your thoughts right now then he would know that you wanted to punch him, even if this was necessary for luring the beast....ugh you really don't know what's right any more. As you stood there with your gaze averted from him, he strides past you and  drips some blood around the trap as well, then places the rabbit near the trap, it would serve as another snack for the beast.

The sky soon turned black, you could see some clouds passing by the clearing as you and Tynan waited behind one of the trees surrounding the trap. Gripping the tree bark you lean to the side sticking your head to see if anything is happening. No movement, not even a bird flying by or another animal passing through. It was if the blood was warding everything away:

"Won't wolves come here?" the blood smelled vile, one rabbit doesn't have that much blood in them to cover that much area so either Tynan killed a lot more or he used some kind of spells to enhance the smell.

"No" was his only answer, no explanation no nothing. Soon you won't be able to see anything, it's getting darker and darker and frankly, you don't want to see how the beast eats the rabbit up.

But will it taste delicious you wonder? You never had rabbit before....

Wait. What. Why are you thinking this? You just pitied the animal and now you're wondering how it tastes like...

Your hair stands on end. Something felt wrong more than usual, bringing a hand to your forehead you check if you have a fever and find none. Leaning against the tree you cross your arms and stare at nothing in particular. It's gotten so dark you can't see the trap so you might as well listen for any movement.

Hmm, the blood doesn't smell so vile any more...

 it smells....nice.....

That creature will soon sink it's teeth into that meat and tear it apart. What would it feel like for you? To sink your own teeth into it. To feel the flesh against your mouth, rip a chunk of it and eat it?

"T-"

Your grip yourself more and dig your boots into the ground. You wanted to get the demon's attention but forming words was hard for some reason. Coldness picked at your skin and you maintained a glass gaze at the darkness. These thoughts that invaded you were foreign but felt as if they really did belong to you.

"Aren't you curious?~" a small voice rings in your head. It oddly resembled a little girl's voice.

"No..."

"Liar"

"No...."

Your hands shoot up to grip your head as a splitting headache attacks you out of nowhere. It feels like needles are poking at every part of your brain, in some points they even drill deep inside.

"TYNAN!!" you scream and slump down to the ground still gripping your head.

Pain grew by seconds and you don't know how much more you could take... As if Tynan's name was a cue the needles increased their force and they showed no wish to stop. Amidst the pain you could hear the little girl giggling. Cruel, empty giggles..

Suddenly everything stops and you feel soft fabric against your face. Hands wrapped around you gave comfort as soft whispers filled your head slowly, lulling you like a baby. Shoulders relaxed a bit, cold sweat travelled along your back as you nuzzle deeper into the safety of the entity.

"I-I..." you grip his suit tighter" I-i'm sorry... I don't now what came over me.." a few tears escape your eyes. Drawing back you wipe them away and focus on the demon. Silver strings float around him as he's still on one of his knees. His expression maintained calmness and in a sense, just by looking at him, you relaxed a bit more. After a few minutes you were calm and ready to carry on your mission.

"The beast showed up while you were zoning out~" his voice rung in your head and you looked at him with a confused expression. Not saying a word he took your hand and started leading you from your hideout to the forest centre. Silver strings twirled through the air lighting up some of the grass, the body of the rabbit which seemed untouched till finally, they gathered around the corpse of something else, something small as well.

When you finally approach it your breath gets caught in your throat and no words escape your lips as you slowly start backing away. Every present sound was drained from your ears and only the noise from your boots stepping the grass haunted you.

Just mere meters from you, illuminated by the strings, laid a little girl's corpse.

"What...what is this? You said the beast showed up!! Why is there a little girl here????!!!" you raise your voice as you avert your eyes from the body. OK, ok, calm down, just calm down Y/N, maybe... just maybe...

"It's the beast, come closer and you'll see that I am not lying~"

With shaky steps you do as he says and approach her again. The demon was crouching near her body and when you came he beckoned you to lean closer but you shook your head.  No way are you coming closer than need be. A sigh escapes his mouth:

"Look" as he says that his fingers take her mouth and open it wide to show a line of sharp teeth. What was also disturbing that another line of the same teeth were behind the first one. The girl looked to be about 5 years old in human standards you guess. She had greyish hair and her face was a sickly white colour, like any other little girl, she wore a dress, a blue coloured one. The trap's fangs were deep into her right leg, a bit strange seeing as it should have practically cut off her leg,

"I'm almost mere seconds from throwing up but first" you crouch down as well and put on your thinking face.

"How did she die? I mean, you can die from blood loss... but this thing isn't human or anything from my world..." you murmur to yourself and see no signs of blood dripping from the leg were the trap was, did it have something else other than blood running through its veins?

"Also... the animals were ripped apart even shredded to pieces, this thing would have a lot of hassle just ripping apart one leg of an animal despite having such teeth and a small mouth is a disadvantage as well. I also don't know its jaw strength and honestly I don't want to know" you shudder a bit.

"Yet you think it did it?~ killed all those animals?~" Tynan's eyes turn a deep purple.

He seemed delighted.

"The rabbit isn't touched and the meat from the trap is laying further from the trap's original position. The girl didn't stop to eat, she was running and that can explain why the trap is on her leg and, for example, not stuck on her head or arms." you stretch your arms towards the trap and pull apart the rings, the leg limply falls, still no blood.... You lean even more and inspect her wounds...

"Is she really dead?" you gulp and lean back, no holes, no injuries, it's as if she was made of some rubber or something stretchy because once you removed the trap the "holes" filled up again with skin.

"She is undoubtedly dead~"

"...." you stay silent for a bit" So she was running and stepped on the bear trap which immobilized her for a bit, then what?" a thought hits you and you slap your forehead" of course, I'm an idiot, she was running away from someone!"

You stand up and start pacing back and forth, Tynan chuckles silently, enjoying your play of a detective. When you stop in front of the body however, you feel confused.

"Why does it need to run away from someone? She's small yes, but I think the creatures of your world really outmatch mine, there are no bears here, I suspect she can outwit wolves, there's a possibility of hunters but that doesn't seem too likely...."

"Wait....WAIT WAIT WAIT!" as your gaze leaves the girl, it settles on Tynan. He smiles widely.

"When I was zoning out." you start pacing again, breaking your stare from his.

"Where were you? What were you doing?" your footsteps slow a bit as if the answer is gaining up on you and weighing you down.

"I was leaning against the opposite tree from you, when it became dark I stayed in my position, then I noticed that you were unusually quiet so I thought that you were just in deep thought but I was surprised when you started to cry and you know the later~" his smile didn't falter as he said his part crystal clear.

"So you were with me the whole time?"

"But of course~ I have to protect you ~"his smile turned into a smirk but you paid no mind to it.

"Do you have any explanation as to what happened when I zoned out?" with a hint of anxiousness  you ask. This whole hunt for a monster kind of backfired, sure you caught the thing but, something didn't feel right.

Tynan finally stands up and stuffs his hands in his pockets then looks around. Dawn will soon begin. Your parents were going to kill you, plus your grandparents, double the fun right? And you also needed to dispose of the body... Just as you think that last bit, you hear something and turn quickly to see the corpse being dragged inside the earth? Since it was still dark you couldn't see clearly but the body was sinking in some black substance...

You keep your distance and hear soft giggling...

until the body is devoured fully

"It was running from something obviously stronger~ I hid my presence so that we could catch the beast so it wasn't me she was running away from~" he approaches your frozen figure and shows his toothy grin " Clearly this was a youngling~

"Wait, you're not saying..."

"There should be a grown up roaming around~"
