Chapter 16.

You stare at your plate of breakfast, a steaming cup of tea right beside it. Having no appetite after last night's incidents your head was completely empty. When you woke up it was 8 o'clock, light knocking was heard from your door and that sent a shiver down your spine. Thinking it was the creature you just sat silently but hearing both of your parent's talking and having their usual conversations relaxed you a bit.

"Y/N? You don't like what's for breakfast?"

Now sitting at the Inn's dining room you look at your parents. Your dad was reading the latest news while scrolling down the screen of his phone, coffee cup in one hand, phone in the other. Your mother did the same except she wasn't reading but looking at you while sipping coffee.

"I just feel a bit sick, I'll go to the bathroom" standing up you set aside your chair and go to the back where the lady's room was. Pushing the door you enter and stand in front of the mirror, hands placed on the side of the sink you look down to the white surface of it.  You weren't actually sick, but there's was some bitterness in your mouth. Turning the tap on, you rinse your hands and face, the cold water refreshes you in an instant.

Feeling a bit better you look to the mirror and groan a bit, your hair was a mess, there was some kind of stain on your shirt and frankly, you looked like a zombie. It reminded you of school days, when you had to rush in the morning, didn't get enough sleep and just wished lessons would be cancelled. One time when you had art some students brought gas bombs to the school and left them in the toilets. You were listening to music and drawing when suddenly everyone was running outside. School was cancelled that day and you heard that the students were caught and expelled.

Chuckling a bit at the memory you dry your hands, decide to brush your hair in the car and exit the bathroom. What you didn't notice about your appearance was the faint hue of purple surrounding you as it followed suit.

"We're leaving in 15 minutes so go pack your luggage" putting his cup down your dad says.

"She should at least eat a little bit, you can't go on an empty stomach Y/N" your mom let's out a sigh of relief as she sees you wolf down a bit of food.

"Finish your tea, go pack and come to the car" your dad says and leaves with your mother.

"Ok" pushing your plate aside you take the cup of tea and drink it bit by bit.

The windowsill across from your table catches your attention, deep red flowers sway a bit from the partly opened window. They bloomed beautifully and made the room more cozy, lifting up your spirits a bit.

"Excuse me?"

You freeze and look to the side but relax after seeing the cafe's owner who gave the keys to your bedrooms. Nodding for him to talk he coughs a bit and asks politely:

"Pardon me for this but have you spilled a drink or some other fluid while entering your room?"

A confused expression overcame your face. You didn't see anything while leaving your room nor did you bring anything drinkable there...

"Um, sorry I didn't bring anything except my luggage full of clothes..." Standing up you tell him that you'll check it out and clean it if you find something. Of course he protested politely first because cleaning was usually left for the workers there but you insisted that it was your fault and you'll take care of it.

Climbing the stairs you think of every hour, minute, second of last night. Shuddering at the memory of that creature behind your door was frustrating but you pushed the thoughts out of your mind. You really didn't bring any drink or anything.

Just as you approach your door a click sounds and the opposite door from yours opens revealing your dad with his luggage. It makes a thud sound when he places it and looks at you:

"You're still not ready? We'll leave you here if you don't hurry~" he snickers.

"I'll be quick, just got to clean some stings very fast, if you're gonna leave me, at least leave me some money so I could go back home on a bus or something" you smile at him and peer at your door a bit. Something dark stained the wooden floor.

"Don't take too long" your dad ruffles your hair and pulls his luggage with him to the stairs.

You wait a couple of minutes for him to be completely gone and bend down to the stain on the floor. In need of more light you open your room's door, light from the window enhances the stains on the floor.

You brush your fingers along the black tainted floor's surface and rub the blood like liquid between your fingers. You instantly think of the creature from last night, this must be what's left of it.... At one moment of your 4 hours at night you heard a faint squeal behind your door but  paid no mind to it. It was probably killed, either by Tynan or something else. Getting up you go to the bathroom and take a wet towel to clean the stain.

*Time skip*

"Now Y/N remember to be polite and don't take all the candy they give you"

Letting out a faint groan of approval you open the door to get out of the car. When your family visited your siblings they, mainly your grandpa, would place a huge bowl of candy on the table for you to eat. Different candy wrappers would shine in your eyes as you looked at them. Your parents and siblings would usually talk boring stuff like who got married, got a job and so on. Leaving would be considered rude so you would be stuck at the table just ogling the tasty treats.

"Ah Y/N!" your grandma shouts and hugs you as you approach the front of the house.

"Hey grandma, you're strong as ever" you wiggle in your grandma's grasp, even though she was getting older, for some reason her strength remained the same, of course you were glad by that. In the background your parents said hello to your grandpa who was hugged by your mom, it was her father after all. A friendly handshake between him and your dad followed and everyone entered the house.

The location where they lived was a bit further than the city, surrounded by trees at one side and grassy fields on the other. That's why the directions were a bit more complicated. The house itself  gave of a warm feeling with it being surrounded by various plants, trees and bushes. A small pond was on the right side of the house, your mom parked the car near it.

"So how are studies Y/N?" taking of her shoes your grandma asks.

And just as you opened your mouth a hissing noise came from the kitchen.

"Ah the kettle!" now tossing her right shoe aside she sprints to the next room in front.

Smiling at your grandma's activeness you remove your shoes and enter the dining room where your grandpa was already telling stories of various events to your parents. Not wanting to disturb them you go to the kitchen to ask if she needs any help with setting the tea/coffee.

After all of you have a drink, your grandparents tell you that one of your cousins who was supposed to be here had to stay behind at home because he was getting behind his studies. You haven't seen your cousin in a while, heck, couldn't even remember how he looked like. Unwrapping one piece of candy you put it in your mouth and munch on it.

"Cheep!"

You almost choke on your candy. Gulping it down with tears in your eyes you look down to the floor to see two small black dots looking at you.

A chick.

It stares at you for a moment and then sits on the ground. Your parents and you were confused at the little critter but your grandparents started to laugh:

"Aaah this one just loves to adventure!" grandpa exclaims.

"He hatched just recently and he won't stay put no matter what you do to him, we should see his mother soon too" saying that your grandma goes to another room behind the kitchen and you hear a door being opened. Hearing that sound the little chick stands up quickly and runs to another room.

There was a small barn next to the main house, your grandparents kept chicken, peacocks, pigeons, geese. There were also some bee hives near the barn and you would always get a jar of honey to bring home. The whole territory had a fence surrounding it to prevent foxes from killing the animals.

"Y/N why don't you go explore a bit?" standing up and stretching her arms towards the ceiling your mom let's out a yawn.

"Maybe you'll meet a handsome guy along the way~" your dad teases.

Rolling your eyes with a smile you exit the living room and go outside. Along the way you meet your grandpa who tells you that he's taking your dad out fishing and will be back late. Your mom went to sleep and your grandma is in the garden tending to vegetables. Grabbing your backpack and some snacks you open the small wooden gate and step out onto the road. You had the option either to go right to the grassy fields or left where houses lined up and the path would eventually take you to the forest.

Since it was 4 o'clock and the sun was brightly shining you decided to turn left. One neighbour was cutting the grass with a lawnmower, another one was cleaning a tractor. You hear high pitched shouts and laughter from behind you as three kids run past, two boys and a girl, all three were very young. Now this scene was calming: the countryside, working people, kids playing around. Shaking your head you remind yourself not to bee too carefree, trouble might be lurking somewhere.

Taking a step further you hear quiet sobbing from the right. Turning your gaze you see a white house with no fence but it looked well kept with the blooming flowers and cut grass. Deciding to check it out you circle the building and see a small boy behind the house, sitting against the wall and hugging his knees.

"Are you ok?" you approach him cautiously, the memory of the creepy kid from the TV flashes in your mind but your nervousness disappears when the child looks at you. Two watery eyes show when he lifts his head up and you see some blood on his cheek and on one of his legs.

With no further questions you take off your backpack and get out a bottle of disinfectant, a bottle of water, some cotton and a bandage. You always carried it with you.

"Can I see your wounds?" you ask softly. He nods and sniffles as he extends his leg and shows his cheek fully.

After a couple of minutes with you cleaning the wound and placing a bandage on it you let out a sigh of joy. The boy looked pleased as well, he stood up and moved his leg a bit checking if it hurt or not.

"It stings a bit but thank you Miss" he shoots you a toothy grin and extends you his little arm.

"My name's Oscar, what's yours?"

"I'm Y/N" you show a smile and pack your stuff.  You and the boy then decide to walk around the village together, he tells you that he hurt himself by falling over when he ran after a chicken which escaped it's coop. Giggling at that and receiving a pout from Oscar you two stop by a shop and buy some ice cream.

After two hours of you telling the boy about your country you decide it's time to head back home. You didn't go down the road fully so you didn't go to the forest and now that you think about it, it wasn't really a safe place for you any more. No where actually was.

"Hey Y/N?"

"Yeah Oscar?"

He stops in his tracks and circles you to your backpack. Lifting his arm he points to the front of it and asks with curiosity:

"What's that key for?"

Damn. It.

You forgot about the bloody key.

Trying to stay calm you bend down to his height and say:

" I don't really know" then you smile a bit and say in a hushed tone" Maybe it unlocks a secret world filled with adventures~"

His eyes shine at your sentence and he makes a wow expression. At least you found ways of making your situation a bit lighter, just seeing the kid's expression got rid some of your nervousness. In truth, you didn't even know how the key got on your backpack. Must've attached itself the little bastard.

"Oscar I think it's time to go home" hearing a quiet 'ok' from the child you two follow the path to your grandparent's house. Saying goodbye to Oscar who demands you to play with him again some time you pick up your pace and go home. The sun was setting and we know what that meant. Double the possibility of you being attacked by something again.

Swinging the door open you shout that you're home and climb up the stairs to your room for the stay.  Second floor, the doors connected with your parent's room so at least there wasn't a hallway this time to separate you from them. Your parent's room was empty as you passed by, your mom was probably still sleeping in the dining room with the TV on, your grandma was no doubt watching some program.

Yawning a bit you stretch your arms and open the door to the balcony. Night breeze hits you when you step outside. Not too cold. Good.

Sitting on a chair you put your leg on the other and look at the setting sun. One of the trees growing in the garden blocked some of your view but you didn't mind too much. Soon tiny dots appeared in the sky and you connected them to see the different things from astrology: like the bear or a lynx.

After it got completely dark you decided to go downstairs and make yourself some cocoa, maybe talk with your grandma. Steps creaked as you went down and entered the kitchen. Taking the steamy mug you go to the dining room and find the whole family with worried faces.

"Did something happen?" you put the mug on the table and take a seat. Your grandpa looked a bit angry and sad, his wrinkles were deeply etched as he was in a state of thought, hand on chin. Your parents looked at you with a face which said: wait a moment.

The first to break the silence was your grandma. She let out a sigh and hung her head a bit.

"One of our geese was killed. I found him behind the fence, ripped to shreds...." she bites her lip, as strong as she was morally and physically she loved animals dearly.

"What's also weird" your grandpa whispered"that a dead fox was also near the goose, in the same state - ripped apart." he stands up and exits the room. You hear talking for a bit and he comes back.

"I called the wildlife association, usually they ask to tell them if something unusual happens and this is the first time I see such a sight."

"Are there any bears around here? Any other predator?" you ask, muscles tense you bite your lip just like your grandma.

"The last time a bear was seen around here was about 100 years ago, they don't really like our country's climate, and the hunters mostly killed all of them." grandpa states.

"I suggest keeping all the animals in the barn and check the fence for any holes" your dad suggests and everyone agrees on this.

Soon your grandpa goes to put all the animals, who were still wandering outside, into the barn. Your dad, equipped with a flashlight checks the fence for any gaps. Mean while your grandma and mom go to sleep leaving you to wait for the men to come back.

Sitting at one of the rocking chairs you wrap yourself tighter in your blanket while watching TV. The little chick from before was snoozing away on your lap. It behaved more like a dog than a chick. Followed everyone around, always squeaked when you gave it crumbs and liked to be petted, closed its eyes every time you touched its soft head.

Chuckling at the sight of the chick you looked back to the TV . You really hoped it was some wild animal and not another creature which would likely try to kill you. Turning off the TV at the same moment as the front door opens you look back and see grandpa and dad, both looked relieved so that meant no animal went missing or got killed.

Now that your task of waiting was done it was time to hit the hay. Taking the chick with you to your room you put it on the bedside, it snuggles into the blanket. You smile at the sight and turn off the light. Maybe you'll sleep well tonight knowing there aren't any holes in the fence.

.............

.....

.

Boy were you wrong.

You stood at a door. Long dark curtains flared from it's top. Everything was dark. Only small gaps from the door had some light to it.

Sighing out of defeat you take the doorknob and twist it open. Deep blackness beyond the door. Oh goody, another place where you really don't wanna go but are forced to.

"I could just not enter that room or space and wait here till I wake up"

Just as you say that you hear faint whispers behind you and growling follows it.

"......Nevermind, I'll go in"

You step through the doorway and the first thing you see.

Is an image of you.

"Don't tell me...."

You lift up your right arm and the image does the same, you swing your left foot to the right and yet again it does the same. Now looking at the right and left of your image you see two hallways.

"Why of all things....

"......Did it have to be a mirror room?"
