The Child

It'd been a few years now. There were still no signs of the war ending anytime soon, and yet Wingdings and Suna couldn't have been happier. Despite her earlier protests a few years back, Suna found herself with child. A baby boy that they'd decided to call Comic Sans. He was.. a curious baby, say the least. Taking in every sight and sound with wonder. Suna adored that about him. Wingdings could see a budding scientist already, and hoped the boy would be into such things. Of course it was fine with him if Sans had other interests as well. So long and Suna and Sans were safe. With Sans around, their camp became a much happier place, the babybones spreading smiles all around even before he learned how to tell a pun. Even now, Suna was watching him crawl around with Toriel, while Wing spoke with the king. "What a lively child, I do hope he stays this way." Toriel commented as Sans speedily crawled to his 'uncle' Grillby. The fire elemental picked him up, carrying him over while Sans poked at Grillby's firey cheek in awe. "As do I. Have you decided if he'll learn Wingdings and common, or just common?" Grillby asked as he handed Sans to Suna, who allowed him to play with her phalanges. "Both. He will learn both. I know there are still some phrases Wing can't pronounce in common." Sans started toying with Suna's necklace. "Don't suppose you have a young scientist on your hands?"
"Perhaps we may. Right Sans?" He looked up with bright blue eyelights and smiled. "Awe! You're so cute, my little Comic." She pressed her foreskull to his.

Suna carried Sans as he signed to his father, speaking in common at the same time. Their camp was moving again, it'd be this way, moving once a month, as not to endanger the children. Suna wasn't the only mother after all. "why we move alot? 's tiring.." Wing chuckled at Sans' lack of pronunciation. "To keep you safe, my boy. That's all we'll ever want." He signed back. "Besides. Your mother is doing all the walking." It was Suna's turn to laugh. "He's right. If you want I can put you down?" His sockets went wide. "no! 'm comfy! an' tha's not what i meant! i just.. can't we jus' settle? stay in one place for awhile?"
"No Sans we-" She stopped. 4- no- 5 humans.. "EVERYONE GET DOWN!" She ducked down, clutching Sans close to her chest. Her soul beat wildly as she looked around for Wing, just as the humans started to ambush. One came for her and Sans, her thoughts quickly directed themselves to protecting her baby. Wingdings could use magic, Sans wasn't old enough to summon attacks yet. She judged the human quickly, determining that he was a threat to king and county, before taking him out. She was aware of Sans small frame clinging to her, shivering, sobbing. Her son was scared. She wanted to calm him down, to tell him it was a bad dream, but it was no dream. Between hers and Wingdings blasters and the rest of the party's weapons, they drove their attackers away rather quickly. Finally she could turn her full attention on her boy. "Shh, shh, Comic. It is ok now. All is well." That was a lie. Blood and Dust littered the field. But what Sans didn't know, wouldn't harm him.

Sans, she knew, was smarter than the average child. Smarter than the average skeleton, even. Even when they finally got to their new camping spot, and they'd found Wing, Sans refused to let go. He was afraid. Rightfully so. She hoped, they both hoped, it'd be a long time before Sans was apart of a human ambush. It was mere wishful thinking though. Even when Wing finally managed to pry Sans off of Suna, he stared blankly at the ground, sockets dark, and hands trembling. Both parents tried to cheer their son up. They tried so hard, but he was afraid. Afraid that they'd end up like the monsters who never came back. He was afraid of the humans.. "I'm.. going to see if Toriel can calm him a little with her magic. Will you be ok with Sans?" Wing looked down at his little scientist with worry. "We'll be fine. Please do get Toriel." A thought had come to mind. Something she had to show Sans, so he many not be so afraid. Wingdings kissed his mate gently and placed a hand on his son's skull. "I will return shortly." As soon as he left Suna crouched before Sans. "My Comic, my son. I want you to memorize this form, so you always know it's me ok?" He looked up at her, confused and scared. He didn't bother signing along this time. "w-what.. but i already..?" She activated her magic and took her human form. Sans mouth opened in a silent cry before he hid under his cot. It was to be expected. Suna sat on the floor, ready to wait however long it took.

She waited, and waited until she could see her sons eyelights under the cot. Watching. Also waiting. She chose her words carefully. "This is magic, my son. I can make myself look human, but I am just as monster as you, or your father, or the king and queen." Slowly, ever so slowly, he slid out from under his cot. He still kept his distance though. He kept his mouth closed signing. are you really my mom? only mommy, daddy, and i know this so you gotta say it word for word if you really are mommy. She was quite impressed on how far he'd gotten in Wingdings. His common was still pretty choppy but for a 3 year old, his Wingdings was flawless. "You'd said: are you really my mom. Only mommy, daddy, and I know this so you gotta say it word for word if you really are mommy." His sockets went wide and he rushed into her arms. She held him close as his thought went a mile a minute. "what? how? can i?"
"One at a time, one at a time.. Sans.. you do not need to be afraid. Not.. not all humans are bad." She hoped. "Humans are much like us. There are good monsters and bad monsters. One day you will learn to distinguish between them.. ok?" He nodded slowly. "how do you di- dis- sting- gish them?"
"Time. Time and experience with others." She hummed, placing her foreskull on his.
