Chapter 23 : Being followed

Entering the house I proceeded quietly down the foyer until the living room. As I approached I can hear a female voice speaking on the phone but I recognized the voice. I stepped into the room once she puts down the phone. "Hello my dear." she said with a smile.

"Hello Aunt Maddie." I replied with a smile. "It's been a while."

"Come." she said. "We have a lot of things to talk about." A while later we sat on the couch in the living room facing the television with a tray of tea and cookies on the table. "It has been so long, you're still a child when I last saw you."

"I admit, you have grown older as well Aunt Maddie." I said, sipping the cup of tea. "I still have questions about my mother."

"I will answer as much as I can Isabella." she replied.

"She talks about the word Cambridge a lot. I can remember that she spends her time alone in her study every night. You came to help take care of me ever since during nights, why is she doing this every night?"

"She never told you about it?" she asked. "I thought she will tell you."

"Is this a mystery I cannot know?" I asked.

"The truth is very simple." she said in plain fashion. "When she is raising you here in London she is invited to study in Cambridge, in law. She didn't want to tell you at first but decided that she would when you reach twelve."

"Did she graduate?" I asked.

"She did."

"What kind of law?" I asked.

"International Law." she replied. "It was her favorite according to her own words."

"I thought she studied law before." I muttered.

"It's criminal law. She studied criminal law in-"

"New York University, I know that." I reply.

"You know that she's worked with MI6?" she asked me.

"I already know that." I replied. "I have an informant in MI6."

"Judging from the explosion a few days ago I started to think that you have other reasons to be here in London." she said. "And it's definitely not for personal reasons." My expressions tensed. "Why would you have a gun on you?" I sighed but did not answer. "Why did the MI6 show up?" this time, my expression is unreadable.

"Can I trust you with my secret?" I asked.

"You can, I promise." she replied, a hand on my shoulder. "I know that your mother worked for the South Korean government."

"I'm working for the FBI." I said, my voice deep. "I came here for a mission."

"I know you won't tell me more, therefore I won't ask." she said. "But I'm glad that you have chosen your own path rather than following that man's footsteps." my mouth twitched a little.

"I don't aspire to be him Aunt Maddie. I'm glad that I don't have to live under his shadow."

"Whatever you do and whenever you are Isabella, remember that, I will always support your work." she said.

"Thank you." I said, almost in a whisper.

An hour later

I left the MP's house and walked down the streets to reach Uncle Roland's home. I have to be careful now, the people who have planted the car bomb clearly wanted me, Andy and Simon Harris dead. Uncle Roland has his suspicions on the Venezuelans. My phone buzzed in the pocket of my jeans and I took it out to see a message. "Drop by at Lambeth, tonight at eight. Code word : Unicorn and Lion." wrote the sender. Slinging my backpack over my shoulder I heard a dog barking. I looked back but the dog wasn't barking at me, but a man hiding within the nearby trees. He wore a button down with black pants and a baseball cap. My senses heightened when I saw him in the shadows but I never reached for my gun holstered at my belt. I took out my phone to pretend making a call, my eyes watching him in a safe distance. The evening skies has descended, the sky a rich blue color. Even though the baseball obscured his face I can recognize the jawline of my childhood friend. He must've saw me when we arrived at Heathrow at the same time. Lowering the phone I turned and walked down the streets to use the tube. I did saw him before the explosion but I lost sight of him due to the explosion.

"King, I think I'm being followed." I said after calling Uncle Roland.

"Again?" he asked. "Same man?"

"King, listen carefully. It's him." I said. "I need to shake him off first before I reach Vauxhall."

"Your partner is here in Vauxhall. We'll keep an eye on you."

"Negative, I'll try to shake him off." I said. "I'll call when I can't. Just monitor my location."

"We've got a lock on both of your cellphone signals, we'll monitor." he said. Joining the busy crowd I boarded the train heading to Vauxhall. Ducking into the second train car I continued to blend in with the crowd, plugging in a pair of earphones and listening to classical music. Holding the safety handle I listened to the music while looking at the map display, figuring out my next stop to escape. The train stopped at the station before Vauxhall and people flooded in and out of the train. Taking the opportunity I squeezed out and ducked into the crowd using the travelator. The length and position of the travelator allowed me to look back down and he is still on my tail. Cursing inwards I quickly moved past the busy crowd and took the stairs upwards, exiting and into the public. I spotted a police cruiser along the walkway and two policemen keeping a look out for signs of trouble. I turned back to look multiple times, enough for the policemen to notice that something is wrong.

"Are you alright miss?" one of them asked when I passed by. "Looks like you're in trouble."

"I'm not sure about this, but I felt that a man in a black baseball cap is following me." I replied.

"Do you know him?" the same officer asked.

"No." I replied. "I don't know who he is."

"All right miss, stay calm." he said. "Can you see him now?" I turned back to look as he slipped into a nearby crowd.

"I can't see him, but I am sure that the man has been following me when I stepped out of the tube."

"I see him." the second officer said. "He ducked into a crowd when you turned to look back."

"I think he saw us." the officer said. "He might be laying low but you have to be careful."

"I will, thank you officers." I thanked them. After that I continued my way to Vauxhall. Walking on the pedestrian's lane on the bridge along with the people also taking the same route I slung my backpack again as the feeling same back. My phone buzzed again in my pocket.

"He's still tailing you." my uncle said. Keeping him connected I turned back and spotted the black baseball cap again. "You're near the building and he is still tailing you."
