Chapter 15 : Turbulences

Blair House (Present Day)

Getting out from my private SUV, driven by my principal Secret Service agent Timothy Brock, upon the President's request passed through his principal Secret Service agent Andrew Barrowman. I brought along my backpack containing my laptop and the silver case I received from my grand-uncle. Bruce called me before I can prepare to leave, saying that he'll be late and he'll be fine without me. Worrying about something bad I told him to be safe and asked him to help keep an eye on Duke as well. I'm worried about both of their safety to be honest. I looked up and saw the French flag flying on the flag pole where the visiting dignitaries' national flag will be hung. Staring at the flag not more than twenty seconds I realized one thing, the French President is staying at Blair House, the guesthouse of the President of the United States. My agent held the pet carrier carrying my cat in his hands and he looked at me with a puzzled expression.

"Why aren't you heading in Madam Vice President?" he asked me. "...Oh." then he said after looking up to the flag poles. "Oh boy."

"Not a good time in telling the President about the reports in Venezuela." I told him.

"Maybe after the French President leaves the country?" he suggested as a Secret Service agent went to open the door. I didn't reply as we entered the main hall towards the dining room. "Right, I'll take care of this cat while you're inside." he declared. Entering the dining hall I found myself alone in the room even though a table has been set up. The silverware, arranged neatly on the table alongside wine glasses and plates used for the dinner, the catch is a four person sitting rather than the large crowd I had expected. State visits usually have a large dinner planned out in the White House and nobody was informed about anything relating to the state dinner. I quietly exited the room, bumping into the butler Walter Andrews.

"Good evening Madam Vice President." he said politely. "Are you here for the dinner with President Reagan?"

"Yes, yes I am." I said. "Am I late?"

"Not at all." he replied. "The President is currently having a conversation with the French President."

"That means I came too early." I said. "I guess I can head home first." frowning Walter peeled back parts of his white glove to look at the watch on his wrist beneath the piece of clothing.

"No, no Madam. You're right on time." he retorted. "Please, just have a seat in the room first." he then escorted me into the dining hall and leaves me alone in the room. Sitting at the table my worries for Bruce started to pile up and I punched in a number on my phone. It went to voicemail after dialing the number and I started to worry. Saying he'll be late is already a worrying feeling to me and the words caused me to start worrying that he might be in trouble. The door of the dining hall swung open and President Reagan walked in. President Pierre Durand has been the French ambassador to the UK since the year I was born before becoming the President of the French Republic. He was one of those ambassadors to welcome my mother when she first arrived at the UK to serve as the new ambassador of South Korea to the United Kingdom, as a fellow diplomat. I've only seen him before when I was a child, but we never spoke even though he knows that my mother is raising me while living in the embassy. I didn't recognize him at all.

"Good evening President Durand." I said. He was surprised to see me at first but still returned a polite smile. He introduced me to his wife, First Lady Colette Durand nee Dubois. Dinner is served as soon as we sat down at the table. The dinner is quiet but pleasant, with whispers of French and English filling in between the quiet atmosphere. The First Lady and I exchanged conversations in French on several occasions. During my childhood French was my first foreign language to be educated in, followed by Spanish, Ancient and Modern Greek and many more. My grandmother is a strict woman when it comes to education, encouraging every member in the household to learn more and better themselves. Women in the family are encouraged to study more so that they are equally matched with men.
