Chapter 16 : Ambush?

After the dinner my father and I sat in his private study to discuss about the ongoing problem we now face in Venezuela. Another video was uploaded, creating a large uproar in the American people. Public opinions are split : the first half support their causes but condoned the violence while the other half are outraged and demanded a confrontation. President Reagan and I knew too well about the effects of violence. His predecessor, the president prior to Wintergreen's election to the White House, has went through an incident related to the US Embassy in Libya years prior. The incumbent President has great respect for him and the former president advised him to be careful when making decisions that could involve violence.

Then another situation happened at our feet, this time in Venezuela. I agree with the President that violence will not be an answer to this issue. The second video, more of a clip to be honest, showed the ambassador but he has yet, another cut in his arm. The leader is starting to be more inclining towards violence. I'm worried that they would deploy our soldiers to take back control of the embassy. "I want to deploy to Venezuela sir." I said. "We can't let them continue their rampage."

"I know that." he said. "But I have to reconsider about your decision to go there."

"Sir-" I said.

"You do understand your legal exposure? As the Vice President of the United States you can't afford to go wonky."

"People are dying, you can't possibly sit here right?" I asked.

"I am way more concerned about your safety as VP. You're not an agent right now Isa." he said. I was unable to retort. "Look, I know about your willingness to take out the group but we have to ensure the safety of our ambassadors."

"Let's talk about Heyes." I said. Propping my laptop on the table in the study I pulled up Juan Heyes' profile. "Born into a middle-class family, father's an aspiring tech mogul."

"That's a start." he said. "What about the mother?"

"Nothing on record sir." I reported. "But the family went broke after the financial crisis."

"Apple sued the company if I can recall." the President said. "The company are making knock-off MacBooks."

"One of the reasons the family went broke sir." I said. "Heyes was in the military, under Chavez."

"The socialist leader?" he asked.

"Chavez, yes." I said. "He was a liberal, according to his subordinates in the military. Went wonky after Chavez died, and has a strong hate towards America because of Apple's actions."

"Is there a connection here? Between Fernandez and him?" he asked.

"Based on the source from Ryan's guys Heyes got himself involved with Fernandez's inner circle. Fernandez doesn't like America as well, they share this trait and tried to discredit America."

"Anything on what they did?"

"They surrounded the hotel where the business convention was held, trapping me and Andy inside the building as well." I said. "We already got our target and are going to extradite him. The order came from Fernandez."

"What about Heyes?"

"He wasn't involved." I said, folding my arms. "Fernandez knows that the FBI has involved themselves, connecting the dots between him and the American citizen that provided financial aid in helping him to be elected president.

"Did they know you and Andy are involved?" he asked.

"No, we have our legal cover as attaches." I replied. "Hammer wasn't aware about our real identities until we arrested him."

"Speaking of which, Andrew did inform me about the situation in Venezuela. He mentioned that he spotted Lone Star on a surveillance photo, entering the hotel with Justin Hammer and your partner Andy."

"Did I even have a predecessor?" I asked.

"No. I've put Dallas in charge. We were worried about the incident in Caracas, and we sent a group of Navy SEALs to rescue the hostages."

"But why the presence of FBI personnel?" I asked. "You're the first one to know that I'm in Caracas?"

"No, Julius slipped out when we were discussing the incident."

"I suppose that no news can escape from you Mr. President." I said.

"Not all things can escape from me Madam Vice President." he retorted.

"I have something for you Mr. President. Sent by my grand-uncle from Switzerland." he stared at me in confusion. "Might be useful." I removed the box from my laptop bag and handed him the navy blue wristwatch.

"I'm not giving up on my old one Madam Vice President." he said. "Even though there could be advanced tech installed within it to protect me." I kept my knowing smile intact as I pocketed the watch. Before I could say something we heard a loud crash outside and gunfire in the distance. Secret Service agents burst into the study a few minutes later, armed with assault rifles and wearing body armor. "What the hell is going outside?" the President asked.

"We have to move out sir, we're under attack!" the leading agent replied. "Mercenaries rammed past the barricade."

"What?" President Reagan asked. "Someone protect the French President and First Lady!"

"The President and the First Lady is secure Mr. President." the agent replied. "Don't worry. You'll be safe here." The President and I exchanged uneasy looks as we sat back down at the chairs, me quickly stuffing my laptop back into my backpack. Timothy and Andrew are nowhere to be seen, probably placing themselves on the front lines of defense. "All clear." he then said. "Let's go." he said. Surrounding us within their circle we left the room, heading to the armored vehicle on stand by I don't know where it's parked at. The French counterparts has already evacuated the President and the First Lady to safety as they deemed the threat unrelated to their leader.
