Grinning Shadows

A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.

Like last time the door slammed shut behind the two of you, locking you in a square room with no exit. Confused, you looked around the black and white tiled room that had grey walls and a single ornate silver frame on the wall in front of you. A light without a light source illuminated the frame as well as the room. Nothing was in the frame, but you had a feeling that might change in the next passing moments. The strange part of the room was the fact that the tiles seemed to go on past the walls that surrounded you. This made no sense, but then again you expected few things to make sense in this place. Lucian like you analyzed the room before walking up to the wall on his left side. Resting his right hand on the wall, he pressed against it, but nothing happened. He probably noticed the strange tile affect as well.

Before you had a chance to ask him what you should do next, you noticed something appearing in the frame. Knowing this would probably happen you prepared yourself, but as soon as something started to appear it vanished into thin air. You noticed Lucian backing away from the wall he was standing at. Upon glancing in that direction, you saw the reason why. As if the wall had an invisible window in it, silhouettes of figures gazed out at Lucian and you. Looking at the wall on the right side of you, you saw the same thing happening. At first you were terrified, but this fear intensified when Lucian vanished from your vision. In worry, you shouted out for him, calling his name, but nothing happened. Only the figures stared at you, as if you were some kind of animal locked in a cage. You were there for their entertainment and there was little you could do. Your eyes darted between the two walls until you felt your legs give way, making you crumble to the floor. For some reason their endless gaze penetrated any strength you had, causing you to feel utterly weak.

The urge to cover your eyes and ears filled your being, as your hands trembled. Regarding appearance, they were less terrifying than the creature from the hallway, but something about them just caused you to crumble. It felt like the judgment of thousand was being cast onto you. Every negative thought seemed to cross your mind, allowing a gripping darkness to spread throughout your mind. No voices escaped the lips of the silhouettes, yet whispers sounded in your head. Thoughts of betraying your friends and forever leaving them made themselves apparent. Mutters of disgust seemed to surround you. This disgust aimed towards the fact that you had fallen for a man, who tore you from your past life. Laughter tore at the seams of your mind; the figures laughing at your pathetic weak state, at how you needed protection from another. Weak, weakness were constantly repeated until the word hybrid and fool echoed around the room as well. Escape from the voices seemed impossible and you found yourself curling into a ball on the tiled floor. These taunts resonated in your head, repeating themselves over and over until you felt yourself lightly shaking.

While you were in this state, you didn't notice the figure in the frame making its presence known. Slowly it came to the silver window, its dark silhouette taking a more precise form. Fingers like needles and dripping with blood grabbed the edge of the frame. Its shadowy body pulled itself forward, as its head popped out of the frame. Glassy eyes like mirrors gazed around the room until they landed on you. A wide grin, painted with sharp pointed teeth dripping in the same blood that was on its fingers, stretched across its face, as it crawled out of the frame and came towards your curled up form. You never heard it come out of the frame or approach; it was a shadow that maneuvered past your field of vision. It raised its needle like fingers above your head, ready to plunge them into your flesh.

As you were suffering in your own torment, Lucian was dealing with one of his own. Similar to you, he had seen you vanish from before his eyes. Concern washed over his features, as he desperately called for you. His purple eyes darted across the entirety of the room, hoping to find you somewhere, but no such thing occurred. After a few minutes of this, he yelled in frustration, as if that would somehow summon you back to him. He couldn't lose you; he couldn't let the last important person to him disappear into mere memory. Running his right fingers through his long raven black hair, he saw the figures in the wall evaporate. Their presence was replaced by a murky dark liquid that resembled blood. This substance oozed out of the invisible windows as well as the silver ornate frame. Its slow descent to the checkered tiled floor only increased the ominous air about it. Lucian tried to get rid of it, but it repelled his attacks only getting closer.

When it at last reached his feet, it quickly ensnared him and wrapped around him. Pain erupted throughout Lucian, as he brought his hands to his head. Holding his head in his hands, he let out a scream of anguish. He fell to the floor, supporting himself up by pressing the palms of his hands into the tiled floor. Breathing heavily, he cast his gaze downwards, letting his bangs fall over his eyes. All he could think of was how he had let you disappear from him, how he had let you fall into a field of darkness with no way to return. Cursing to himself, he banged his right fist into the ground repeatedly. This was his fault, all his fault.

Returning to you, the monster was just about to plunge its needle like fingers into you, but you happened to look up. For just a mere moment your ears had picked up a voice past the taunts. They weren't words of comfort, but those of swear words. These words didn't belong to the silhouettes, but to an individual that you knew well. Knowing that he was still there, you felt relief wash over you. Looking up, you saw the mirror like eyes of the creature in front of you. Its eyes reflected your face stricken with relief and new found fear. The hand of the creature hovered above your head. Your sudden movement had caused it to stop in shock. It had not expected you to move, for it thought that the silhouettes had brought you into a pit despair that could not be escaped from.

Seeing the hand, you returned to your senses and instantly darted away from it. With the silhouettes no longer on the walls, you bolted towards the one to your left where Lucian had previously been. The result of your action would either end in you running into a wall, or going through it. You hoped it was the second outcome. Not a second later, the creature sprung after you, reaching its needle hands out to you. Luckily, you reached the wall and prepared yourself for the possible impact. Much to your benefit, you went through the wall and landed in an identical version to the room you just came from. Losing your footing, you almost fell to the floor, but managed to remain on your feet. Glancing behind you, you breathed a sigh of relief, since you didn't see the creature. Focusing your attention back to the front of you, your face paled at seeing the sight before you. A dark substance was wrapped around Lucian, securing him to the ground. His lips parted, as he continually called out your name in a quiet almost broken voice. This sight slightly disturbed you, as you never expected to see Lucian with such a tone to his voice. Slowly moving forward, you knelt down in front of him and rested your hands on your knees.

"Lucian," you called out quietly, hoping that he would respond.

Silence filled the room, as you waited for some reaction from him. It felt like a few minutes had passed before you saw his fingers slightly twitch and his head move slowly upwards. The look in his eyes almost made you want to back away due to the blankness in them. It reminded you of the look he would get in his eyes when you first met him. His eyes looked at you for what felt like a long time, but was only a few seconds. They blinked before some life returned to them.

His lips parted once more and he said, "____?"

Hearing your name in a more lively tone, you smiled gently at him and nodded. You could see the relief wash over him, as the substance holding him to the ground slowly evaporated into thin air. When it fully did, you felt yourself being pulled roughly. Being met by Lucian's chest, you felt his arms wrap around you while he rested his chin on top of your head. He kissed your forehead before standing up and pulling you with him. Sighing, he smiled lightly at you before looking around the room once more. His eyes landed on the silver frame in the room. To your terror, you saw that creature standing in front of it. Grinning at the both of you, it tapped its long needle fingers against its face, as if debating on how to kill you two. As it proceeded towards you two, Lucian gently pushed you back before going swiftly towards the creature.

Its grin widened at seeing his action and it drew its long fingers down its face. Summoning a fire sword, Lucian slashed at the creature, which blocked the sword with its hands. Seeming to laugh, the creature pushed Lucian back before trying to stab Lucian in the chest. Blocking, Lucian maneuvered around to the creature's back, but the creature turned around just in time. Cursing, Lucian dodged the creature's next move before attacking again. This continued until Lucian at last sliced the blade across the creature's neck. Severing its head from its body, the thing tumbled to the ground. When it did so, Lucian quickly grabbed your left wrist with his right hand and went towards the silver ornate frame.

In the next moment, the two of you felt yourselves falling downwards. You were falling with your back facing the approaching ground, allowing you to look upwards and see the creature grinning down at you before it disappeared back into its appropriate room. Sighing in relief, you noticed that you were slowly being turned until you were falling with your feet facing the ground. When you landed, you found yourself standing on the third floor on the left side. Red curtains were behind you while you were allowed to overlook the room from the balcony. How exactly were you supposed to get down though? Glancing back at the curtains, you finally noticed an opening behind them.

"I believe there is only more test to go through. Let's get this over with," he stated, his voice sounding somewhat exhausted.

"I agree. I'm tired of this place and its games," you replied, as you walked over to him. The two of you pushed back the curtains and proceeded onward into the void that lay beyond the curtains.
