❀ 07

The sight that greeted me once Cameron had pushed the vines apart was definitely out of this world; Beautiful was an understatement.

The bright sky was open above us, the sunlight pouring fully down of us. The pretty signature bushes of the park were littered around, and just like where I had surprised Cameron, some marble benches and marble platforms that acted at as tables.

We were surrounded by nature; the ground was covered in grass, only a few paths interlacing and connecting to each other to lead from the seating places to some of the flower bushes around.

The most impressive thing, by far, was definitely the large pool of water in the middle of it all that glistened in the light. The water was as clear as glass, however, still taking and reflecting the blueness of the sky, appearing blue itself. It would be normal, save for the random clouds floating in the water amongst the aquatic plants.

"Oh my..." I trailed off, turning to Cameron with yet another look which was filled with awe. "This is crazy!" This whole park was like a whole new world that I'd never found time or the interest to explore.

"Yeah," Cameron said, however, despite his reply being monosyllabic, his face expression showed that he was just as excited as I was to share with me this wonderful place.

"I should've befriended you sooner." I said, walking towards the central pond.

Rocks were littered all around below it, rippling with the surface of the water as the light wind dragged along the its surface. Along with the rocks, there were some underwater plants, wiggling with the movements of the water. There were even some lotus flowers and plants randomly afloat on the clear water.

"I come here a lot." Cameron said, his voice drifting closer as he stepped forward next to me. "But no matter how many times I do, it still feels so surreal." It was evident in his voice as his tone was filled with wonderment.

"Do people know about this place?" It seemed that it was unbeknownst to the public for this area was entirely empty save for Cameron, Brown, Snow, the nature around us and I. This place naturally seemed like a place where people would loiter around, for reasons that were obvious: it's beauty and pure peacefulness.

"I think they do." Cameron replied, bending down into a crouch, his attention solely on speaking and admiring the clear waters in front of him. "I've seen some people around, but they never really stick for too long. I think it's because it takes a while to get here and it's pretty confusing to find your way out."

"Well, it seems like just another everyday thing to you." I stated, following him and crouching down, however, in my case, I was bending down to scratch Brown's ears.

"Well, it sort of is." Cameron replied, turning his head over his shoulder to glance at me shortly. "Like I said, uh, I come here a lot. Almost everyday. When I don't, I usually linger... At the area before we reach here."

I nodded for a second before I realized he wasn't looking at me. However even before I was able to give him a reply of acknowledgement, he continued speaking. "Snow likes to come here." At the mention of her name, the mentioned snowball turned her head to Cameron.

He reached forward and unclasped her collar. "I usually let her run about here." Just like he'd mentioned, Snow began hooking around the whole area, moving to the bushes to the trees then back to the pond again, but her attention was on Brown as if inviting the latter to go.

I unhooked her leash. "Go on, go play." Brown bounced ahead, excited, and followed Snow around. It was like the latter was giving the former a dog tour of the whole place. I smiled, and tucked the leash into my shorts.

"So," I trailed, standing up and looking around. "What do you reckon we can do?"

Cameron stood up and shrugged, tucking his fingers into his pockets. "I usually play with Snow but I'm afraid she's got a better play date that she likes way better than me." He gazed pointedly at the two dogs, their eyes glued to the water, tongues simultaneously out and just a mere millimeter away from touching the surface of the pond.

"I'll be your play date, then." I said, turning to him with a jubilant smile. "I don't think I'll be as good as Snow, but I'll keep you company. I think that's good enough."

He'd met my eyes with an expression I deciphered to be contentedness. "It is good enough."

So spend the day together, we did.

Well, the remainder of the day, actually. We'd sat on one of those marble benches that was the closest the pond. Our dogs lingered around, playing and minding their own businesses while I shared my attention between watching them and speaking to Cameron as well.

"Which school do you go to?" He asked, his forefinger tracing absent-minded patterns on the marble surface of the table.

"I'm homeschooled." I stated, bringing my eyes from Brown to Cameron's dark brown eyes, they were so dark that they almost appeared black.

"Oh, I go to the school near here." He said, "Hudson College." He added.

The name was familiar. I subconsciously directed my gaze to the sky as I recalled. "A few of my friends go there." Charlie, Olivia and Sophie went there, I thought.

"How'd you meet them?" He asked, his gaze attentively on my face. Mine was on his too. His black hair was messy and tickled his forehead but it seemed to pay him no mind as he pushed his black framed glasses up the bridge of his nose.

"One of them's my neighbour and I think when she was walking to school one day we bumped into each other. It sort of just clicked from there." I explained, the events playing in my head vividly. "Then, she'd introduced me to her friends, and I guess that was that."

"You seem like a pretty outgoing person." He said it like a statement. "You know, um, you're really nice and friendly." He gave me an awkward smile, his cheeks tinging a little pink. "Sorry, I'm very bad at talking to people." He mumbled, now, no longer looking at me.

Whatever he said only made me smile. "Thank you, and don't apologise. I think you did pretty good, not only today. If you think about it, most of our conversations, you started." I told him honestly. He wasn't bad at talking at all, at least I didn't think so. There were moments when I could tell that he'd crept out of his comfort zone, not letting a single anxious thought linger in his head.

He blushed again, and turned away, undoubtedly, a little happy about my statement. "I think that's just because I'm around you. I feel comfortable around you." His eyes were trained out our dogs who were sitting by the pond, eyes trained on the fish that seam inside.

"That's good, because I feel like I'm going to stick around." I replied, a cheeky smile on my face. We landed into another set of silence but it was no longer awkward. It was like what he'd said; it was comfortable. "So, Cameron. Tell me about yourself. What do I need to know?"

"Uh, what do you want to know?" Cameron asked.

"Anything." I replied.

"Um," he said, filling the silence for a while as he thought. "My name's Cameron." He glanced at me. "You already knew that, but that's okay. My birthday is coming soon, it's on the secondth of May. I'll be turning eighteen.

"My hobby is, uh, travelling or exploring places." He explained, and I could definitely see his interest in exploring places. It was that which had led him here, then me when he showed it to me. "I've been thinking about taking a gap year just to travel after my A levels before I go to uni."

"Wow, that sounds fun." To be frank, I've never really considered the option of taking a gap year. I'd always just thought that I would either get a job first or find a university to study further. Whichever would come first.

"Yeah." He agreed, reaching up to ruffle his dark hair. "I'm looking forward to it."

"Where are you planning to visit?" I asked, leaning my cheek against my palm, my elbow assisting in propping my head up, allowing my blonde hair to fall forward and frame my face.

"I haven't actually went as far as to book hotels and look at prices. I think that's a very bad thing. I should start soon." He laughed nervously, pushing his hair back from his forehead. "Well, I've been thinking about going to New Zealand. To see the mountains and lakes in my own two eyes. I want to experience it all first-hand, you know?"

"Yeah, wow." He seemed really passionate about travelling and just enjoying the natural serves of nature. I really admired that. "That sounds really nice."

"I think it will be." He said, mimicking my position as well, a hand pressed on his cheek, his elbow propped on the table. "But to even make it exist, I'll have to look up some information like hotels and and perhaps any programs." He said, chuckling.

"Well, maybe-" however, even before I could suggest what I'd wanted to, a vibration in my pocket made me pause. I reached inside, folding my hand around my phone. The name shown on the the screen belonged to my mum. "It's my mum." I told him for context before sliding my finger up on the screen and answering it.

"Hello?" My mum said into the phone.

"Hey, mum." I answered her, beginning to unravel the realisation that it might have been time for me to home for dinner.

I was right.

"Are you out walking Brown now?" She asked and I hummed a response. "Dinner's about to start soon, I advise if you want to eat with dad and me, you should start walking home now." I wanted to eat with mum and dad. I figured that it was getting later anyway.

The sky was falling darker, still bright, but not as bright before, the natural clock seeming to tick towards night time. "Okay, mum. See you at dinner. Love you."

"Love you."

After I'd hung up, Cameron looked at me expectantly. "I'll walk you out?"
