Chapter 1

Uff!! One more gruelling day of the supercrowded train journey, nothing irritated Uruvi more than this peak hour journey of Mumbai locals. Just as the train haulted in front of her she got sucked into the vortex of volumptous ladies packed together like sardines in a bottle. The people were literally hanging out. Uruvi clutched the overhead support as hard as she could and clung to it for dear life. These locals bustling about the length of Mumbai were quite synonmous to the city itself. Much like the city they were overcrowded, stinky yet with a certain charm and order within its chaos. Reasons never ceased for a fight to break out, tempers were always flying around. Sometimes the people could be really uncharitable and rude. Maybe that was the way a person should be inorder to survive here, in this rat race. The rude comments & catfights always left her in a high temper. Most people glided in & out of these locals with a finesse, accostomed as they were to the workings of a secret code of conduct to be followed in locals!! However, all this was an alltogether new experience for Uruvi, as a result, she always found herself at the recieving end of angry looks & words. She promptly plugged in the earphones & tried to ignore all the monkey play happening around her. Ahh! She could see her station nearing, finally she reached her destination! She didn't even have to make an effort to get down, a wave of people pushing her did the job for her. Disgruntled as usual she made her way to her workplace. A callcentre job was not something she ever fancied, but just as she did for everything else she compromised with her choice of job aswell, afterall life was all about compromises, right? Or was she the only one at the recieving end of destiny's cruel twist of events, she often pondered over it.

'Madam,chai?'...asked the peon. 'Oh God,why is everyone out for my life today, just place it somewhere and leave me alone!!' There was a time when she won't even have thought of replying in this fashion but all this stress was really getting at her, how she wished she could just leave this Goddamn life and  run away to someplace. The calls started pouring in. Tick tock tick tock ,she couldnt seem to take her eyes of the clock. She could see Sangeeta across the table so serene and calm, maybe because she didn't have a crumbling marriage to deal with. Yes, marriage, it was at the core of all her problems. 'How could something that felt so special until yesterday sour out all of a sudden... How could someone who made her feel so special, make her feel so unwanted today..argh! Enough of these thoughts..' Uruvi gathered herself and once again set herself into a mechanical rhythm, she chose not to dwell on these problems. Finally, her shift ended. Everyone it seemed were planning to go out to the new pub that had opened nearby, her colleagues invited her but she declined their offer. She never was made for such places. Socializing with people or doing anything that remotely grabbed much attention was something she could never get adapted to. She preferred to be a wallflower at such occassions. That, maybe was the reason why Uruvi never made much friends. As a result, her love marriage came as a shock for much of her acquaintences and her aswell.
