Chapter 53

My spell had worked against the powers of the Gemini coven. We had seen them around town, lurking and waiting for their perfect time to strike, which would be never. Their leader, my coven member's father, was the most vile man I had ever seen. The way that he spoke about us behind our backs, when he didn't think we were listening, made me sick to my stomach. If a vampire could get physically ill, I would be hurling my guts out right now.

Constantly calling their own son a monster was one thing, but speaking as if they had been actually planning to kill him all along made me wonder if such cruelty could really be disguised as love for nature and the values that their ancestors had instilled in them. If these were their ancestors, they weren't good people and didn't deserve the magic that they had been born with. Magic should be reserved for humans or vampires who care about their family and would never wish to truly harm them.

Unfortunately I had heard much worse come out of covens in centuries prior. They would just burn their siphoner children or steal their magic and put it in some magical object to be used for later spells. Despicable and unjust, normal witch covens have no love in my heart anymore. At one point I would have wished to coexist with them, but now I knew that there was no way that we could accept people who would willingly do this to their children. Abuse of any kind would not be tolerated by me or my family.

"Are they going to just sit around and do nothing or are they going to get their asses together and fight us?" Damon questions, looking out the window. Their car was parked across the street. This coven was clearly awful at disguising themselves in new towns, especially since this place has and never will have tourists. We had picked a good place to settle down.

"The Gemini are trying to rile us up," Kai answers, "It's always their strategy."

"Well they're god awful at it," my mate snarks. "Why can't we just go in there, grab them all, and rip their throats out?"

"Because if we do that we'll cause a scene that we won't be able to control," Stefan buds in, "Playing this safe is the best way. Witches are sneaky and they may have something that we can't see."

"It's not like they can trap us again," Kai points out. "But you're right, Stef, my family can be sneaky and they could in fact have something to use against us. We don't know how powerful they are because I was never allowed in family meetings even though I was the rightful heir to the throne of the coven. My father still has his same flaws, we have that against him. We would do anything for each other but all he wants is for the general coven to survive. If one member of the house dies he doesn't care that much. It's all about leaving a legacy for him. Frankly he doesn't care about anything but the survival of the coven."

"He doesn't even care about his children?" Elijah asks, looking disgusted at the thought.

"Not the kids that aren't twins and normal," Kai answers honestly. "For him, if he can get his hands on his twins and have them complete the merge his life will be complete. I have a set of younger twin siblings. Olivia and Luke hate me with a burning passion because I went all psycho and tried to kill them. I would let them carry on the legacy, but I need Daddy dearest dead."

"Any news on whether or not Jo is here?" I ask, not really wanting her to die but also knowing that she would when we killed Joshua Parker.

Kai would not be completing the merge with Jo. He had given up his ambitions of becoming the leader of a powerful coven once he figured out that having a family was much better than all of the power that came with leadership. Plus, he had a coven that accepted him now.

"Doesn't matter," Kai muttered, "She'll be dead after this as well."

"Killing your father will end her," Elijah muses. "A witch sire line is something I never thought I would get to see in my time. You would think after all of their schemes of slaughtering the Originals and cursing their own children that they would gain some sense of comparison."

"All they care about is power at this point. They have other goals but those don't matter as much."

We all looked at each other before taking in a deep breath. This wouldn't be easy and this wasn't what we all wanted to do with our Sunday afternoon. Most of us had other things we wanted to look into while we had the chance. Quite a few of the hybrids wanted to find any other werewolf tribes still left alive to bring into the family. We still had doppelganger blood, which we had been using to create the hybrids.

Our family was starting to become huge. At this rate we would need another house to place all of Nik's hybrids and the heretics. The Salvatore Boarding house may be huge, but not big enough to house over fifty people. Space was becoming an issue we had to fix before we saw morale tank.

With everything at hand, one thing was for certain.

War was coming.

"Sister, have you seen Niklaus?" I turned my head to see Elijah in the doorway of my room, hovering like he needed an answer right away.

"No. Has he gone missing?" Elijah shrugs his shoulders. "When was the last time you saw him? Frankly I haven't seen him for a few days. Caroline has been in and out of the house looking frantic each time. Every time I ask she says that everything is fine but obviously she isn't fine."

"Last time Niklaus and I chatted was on Wednesday. It's Monday."

"Has Caroline said anything to anyone about what is going on with her? I know she gets anxious but this is extreme," Elijah sighs and shakes his head. "Does literally nobody in this house know where our brother is? He can't be that hard to find. Big bad hybrid running around with a stupid grin on his face."

Before answering Elijah turned around to face Val, who was looking frantic as well. "Have any of you seen Caroline? She's been acting weird and said she was going to the doctors. That was two hours ago and I have no idea why a vampire would be going to the doctors."

"Vampires cannot be afflicted with human illnesses," my older brother's face turns to a frown. "Niklaus has not said anything about his mate leaving to go to the doctors either. You would think this is something we ought to know about."

"She's his mate, maybe he thinks something like this is private," I try and reason with him. "We don't know the whole story yet. Let our brother explain himself before you get all riled up."

"I'm not getting riled up," Elijah denies, "I don't get riled up over our brother."

"You've been riled up over our brother for the past 1000 years, Elijah," I deadpan.

"Am not-" I cut him off.

"Don't deny it and just wait for them to get home."
