Chapter 5 ~ An Accident

The week flew by and it is already friday's qualifying. I have been okay since last week, but I really want to get it out of my mind and focus on driving. FP went okay, I ended P8 and that is surely not the position I want to be. Arthur ended P3 and he was doing amazing at the FP. I was drinking some water in my driver's room when I heard Arthur calling my name. I left the room and walked into the garage. The qualifying was almost starting so I had to hurry up a bit as I forgot the time. I quickly changed into my suit and got into my car, which was already ready. I had 30 minutes to prove myself again to end in the top 5. The first laps I really needed to get confident with the car. After like 15 minutes I was on P6 and Arthur on P2. I took it really slow today and in the last lap I got P2 and Arthur was on pole. I was really happy about my position and knew that Sunday was going to be even better. Arthur and I parked cars back into the garage and gave some interviews. After we were finished Charles walked up to us.

"Well done guys."

"My first pole for F2, it's something special." I went back to my driver's room to swap clothes and left with Arthur to the hotel.

Saturday's sprint race went really well, I started from place 9 as the top 10 from qualifying gets swapped. The races lasted about 45 minutes and I got up to P5, so I still got 4 points for the championship. The sprint race costed me a lot of energie so I went to bed early. I changed into my pajamas and got into my bed. I fell asleep quite fast, but it didn't last long. I woke up terrified and fully covered in sweat. I was sitting straight onto my bed with my head looking down. I looked at my phone, it was 2 a.m in the morning. I always have some nightmares about Jules' crash, but this one felt too real. I still feel horrible leaving him behind in the hospital and it feels like I abandoned him. I also blame myself for his crash, because I made him really upset just before the race. We had a big argument and I said that I never wanted to see him again and that I hated him, even I didn't mean it though. I have never been able to forgive myself for his accident. I walked to the fridge to get myself a glass of water to calm down a little. After I had calmed down a bit, I went back to sleep as soon as I could. I probably slept for another 3 hours. I was watching the hours going by till it was finally 8 a.m.

I was completely exhausted when I got up from my bed. I showered quickly, to wake and freshen up. I put on some make-up to cover up my panda eyes. I changed into my normal clothes and walked out of the room, where I bumped into Lando.

"Hey Lisa, are you okay? You look so tired."

"Hi Lando, I'm fine, just didn't sleep well last night."

"Going to track already?" I nodded.

"I'll bring you, I'm going anyway, you know, interviews."

I texted Arthur that I had already left with Lando. I got in his car and he drove to the track. When we arrived I felt really nervous, as I didn't know him that well. The F3 had started 10 minutes ago.

"I have to go, I'll see you later." I walked up to the Prema Racing paddock.

I watched the Formula 3 race in my driver's room, to get myself a little bit more confident. Someone knocked on the door.

"Lisa, are you coming? We have to get ready, the race will be starting very soon." Arthur walked into my room.

"Wow, Lisa you okay? You as white as a ghost."

"I'm fine, just very nervous." I started to panic a bit, as I was changing into my suit. Arthur tried to calm me down.

"It will be fine, the last races went all really well." I looked at Arthur and then to the ground.

"It's Jules isn't it?" I didn't say anything.

"Lisa, Arthur, are you guys coming, the race will start in 20 minutes." I walked out of the room and went to the grid to the car.

I saw Lando walking up to me with a soft smile. "Be safe Lisa, you will do well." He gave me a hug.

"Thanks Lando" I said.

I was standing on the grid and putting on my balaclava and helmet. Charles gives me a hug. "You can do it Lisa." I got in my car, away from all the people.

"It's Arthur on pole and Lisa on second. It's lights out and away we go, Arthur has a really great start. Dennis Hauger is already watching to pass Lisa. In the back of the field someone went off, track clear again. Dennis Hauger passes Lisa, she is really not on a good race pace. There is a fight for P5, Logan Sargeant and Jack Doohan. Doohan pouches Sargeant and, ooohh that's a yellow flag. Logan Sargeant with a front puncture."

I was now on P3, I really wasn't too well. I was glad that there was a yellow flag so I could relax a bit. I tried to keep myself calm. Dennis was in front of me and I really wanted, as we are good friends, to end in front of him. After around two laps the safety car went back into the pits and the race continued. Arthur was leading and I was not too far behind Dennis.

"Dennis had a bit of wheelspin. DRS has been enabled again. There she comes, Lisa is watching. She tries, but can't pass him. Lisa has slipstream and passes Hauger. What a beautiful move, she is now in second place. She is trying to speed up, Lisa is really pushing her tyres."

Board Radio Lisa Leclerc
'How far is Arthur ahead of me?'
"10,9 seconds, close the gap."
'Yes, okay.'

I was really sweaty and I couldn't focus, but the race was almost finished. Still 7 more laps to go. I was feeling really dizzy and everything began to darken before my eyes. As I entered the speeding trap, I lost control. All I could think was, shit. My car started to spin and went straight against the barrier. Because of the speed I went into another barrier with the front wing first. I was sitting in the car, not feeling anything at first. I was not able to realise what the fuck was going on. Because of the shock I couldn't move and my heart was pounding really fast. I had no idea what to think. Everything was painful. I heard my engineer talking, but I couldn't say anything back.

Board Radio Lisa Leclerc
"Lisa, are you okay, are you okay?"
'.......'
"There is a fire at the back of the car, fire, Lisa get out, get out!"
"The medical car is on the way, get out!"

I smelled the gasoline, but it didn't give me strength to get out of the car. I had to energize myself or else I would die. The car went up in flames as I was still sitting in. The air was really hot and my skin began to burn. I began to think clear and tried to get myself out with all the strength I had left. When I stood up, I felt someone pulling me out of the flaming car. I fell to the ground and one of the marshalls got me up and brought me to a safer place. I had been in a burning car for 24 seconds and even survived. The medical car arrived soon after. I was laying on the ground, the pain kicked me hard. I had difficulty breathing, because of the smoke and my head was spinning. The doctor from the medical car came running towards me. He gave me a quick check, but the paramedics were called soon after. They shielded me with cloths or something. The ambulance arrived pretty quickly. I was really weak. They gave me medication and a neck brace. I was completely wrapped up so I couldn't move. On the ride to the hospital, I blacked out.

"7 more laps. Lisa is really speeding to catch up with Arthur. She is entering the speeding trap, Dennis Hauger behind with almost 6 seconds. What is happening, her car is shaking. She went straight into the barrier. And that looks very nasty indeed, and unsurprisingly. That is a red flag that has been put out by race control already. That was horrendous, as the car went into the barrier. The car has gone through the barrier and tore the car in half. It's extraordinary, I have never seen a car doing that. A big fire is starting at the back of the car. Still no movement in the car. "

* image of Lisa is no longer shown, as they don't know if she okay or not*

Board Radio Arthur Leclerc
'Is he okay? That was a big one, who has crashed? I see a fire, what is going on?'
"We think it was Lisa who has crashed, we don't know anything about it yet. Keep on driving safely."
'Lisa! Omg.... Is she okay? Please let me know something.'
"Sorry Arthur, she is still in the car, we have not seen a movement yet. She is starting to move, that's a good sign."
'Yess please.... Let me know as you know more.' *starts crying*
"Yes, copy."

I saw a bright light. It was hurting my eyes. I heard some people talking in the background. slowly opened my eyes again.

"Charles? Arthur? Where am I? What happened?" They came to the bed.

"Lisa, I'm so glad you're awake, we were so worried. Please, never scare us again." "yeah Lisa, when I heard that you were in that flaming car, I almost couldn't drive anymore. I was really afraid."

"I will go get a doctor" Max said.

"You were in a crash Lisa, a pretty bad one. You've been in a coma for 3 days." Charles kissed my forehead. "It will be alright, trust me." He said while his eyes were filled with tears.

The doctor walked in with Max. He explained what was all going on, and that we would discuss later about further treatment. I had a slight concussion, broken elbow, a small fracture in my knee, bruises and burns. Overall it was not too bad, it was already a miracle that I survived. I was feeling really weak and tired, so I went back to sleep. Charles and Arthur were staying at the hospital overnight. Before I knew, it was already the next day.

"If it isn't sleeping beauty" I looked at the door.

"Lando, what a surprise, nice seeing you."

"I just wanted to check on you, it was a heavy crash."

"I can't even remember it. I'm feeling so bad..."

And before I could finish, Lando said "Should I call a doctor?"

"No, not in that way, I'm feeling bad for scaring you all. If I had just eaten before the race..."

"When we bumped into each other that morning, I thought that you were already done to go to the track. This is all my fault."

"No, no, no Lando, listen. None of this is your fault. I just.. kind of have a problem with food."

I saw Charles standing in the door opening. The look on his face was full of disappointment.

"Charles..., wait!" I got up from the bed, but fell on the ground.

"Lisa! Are you okay? Are you crazy? Charles!" Lando shouted.

I saw Charles running to the room scared. They both helped me up onto the bed.

I gave Charles a hug. "Please, bear with me, I'm trying really hard" I said.

"I know you are, but I was so scared of losing you. Please Lisa, promise me, don't to something stupid like that ever again."

Some time later, Charles left for some interviews. I spent the whole afternoon with Lando, even though I didn't know him that well, it was actually really fun. Later that evening, I was surprised by RenΓ© Rosin, our team principal and my engineer Pedro Matos. They had brought some flowers. We had a nice chat and they wished me the best. When Arthur and Charles came back to check on me, I was already asleep.

All the other boys, George, Daniel, Pierre, Dennis and Carlos checked on me too. Max and Lando came frequently. I started to get to know Lando very well, and I actually liked being around him. After being in the hospital for a week I was finally discharged.Β
