TWENTY SIX

When I enter my history class I'm surprised to see Taehyung perched on his usual seat beside mine. He hasn't been attending school for the past week or so, I didn't expect him to return for at least another few days. There's still faint cuts and bruises prominent on his milky skin, but they fortunately seem to be removing themselves rather quickly.

When the door clicks shut behind me he looks up, his usual blank expression transforming into a rather pleased smile. He waves before sinking back into his seat as I approach the desk.

"Hey, V." I sit beside him and he glances towards me.

"Hi, Violet," he smiles, "how are you?"

"I'm feeling great actually. I only need my crutches for another two weeks or so."

Before V has the opportunity to respond, the classroom door opens and the familiar figure of Mike steps inside. V turns to me with a confused look on his face.

"Who's he? Is he new here?" He asks and I gulp.

I don't want to lie to him, but considering he lost control when I announced to him my past with Mike, I decide against telling the truth.

"Yeah, he's new. His name is Mike."

Mike smiles softly and sits on the seat to my right, where Eunki usually sits but she's inconveniently absent this morning.

For the past few weeks I've been trying my hardest to forgive Mike; holding grudges isn't healthy to the heart. Although it's an obviously difficult thing to do, I've managed to surpass my previous loathing for the boy, and now, I kind of like him. As a friend, of course.

"It's nice to meet you, I'm Taehyung." V greets politely and leans across me so he can see Mike.

"You too." Mike responds, somewhat shocked. He's not used to being treated kindly by V.

"V, man! You're back!" I look up when I hear the familiar loud voice belonging to Hoseok.

"Boys, clam down." Mr Park mutters from the front of the classroom but the seven all ignore him.

"I'm really happy to see you're back." Jin smiles kindly and V returns his gesture.

After they all greet each other one by one, the lesson continues until the bell rings, signalling the end of the lesson.  V instantly stands and leaves the room rather quickly, as if he's in a hurry, causing me to frown and turn to Namjoon.

"Where is he going?"

"I'm not sure. I'm sure he won't be far."

I shrug and pack my things away into my bag. It's an awkward task for me to stand with crutches and pull my backpack over my shoulders at once, so I'm grateful when I notice a set of strong arms lifting my bag onto my back for me.

"Thank you." I turn to see Mike sheepishly smiling.

"No problem, can I walk you to your next lesson?"

"Sure."

Mike holds the door open for me as I crutch my way through. He walks beside me at a slower pace so I don't need to add extra effort to keep up with his quick pace.

"What lesson do you have next?" I ask him.

"Maths, unfortunately. You?"

"Sport," I huff. "Not that I'll be needing to do anything, of course."

Mike walks me to the sports hall before saying goodbye and heading towards his lesson. I step inside and see the coach setting up the basketball nets.

"Oh, hi, Violet. How are you feeling? You don't need to participate in this lesson, of course. All you need to do is watch."

It doesn't take long for the two classes (both the boys and girls) to enter the large hall. I see V standing beside Yoongi and Namjoon, and I smile at the sight of him and his oversized shorts and black headband covering his dark hair.

I sit on the bench beside a boy who I don't really know -- who has a fractured hand so he can't participate, too. I don't say anything to him, I just watch the lesson as its taught.

"I know you all want to play girls versus boys but we're going to play with mixed teams." The coach announces and everybody's groans echo though the spacious room.

I watch as V is separated from all of his so-called squad, besides J-Hope, who leaves him and flirts with Jess, a tall girl wearing gym shorts. V glances over to me and pouts cutely and I chuckle.

The whistle blows and almost immediately Jin is lying on the floor after a brutal collision with J-Hope. I laugh and shake my head at the sight.

A boy named Soonhyun, who is playing on the opposing team to V, catches the ball and runs towards the net. On his way, however, he bumps into V who is sent falling backwards due to the impact.

I expect V to either laugh, do nothing and stand back up, or even just stay there -- but instead, he does what I expect him to do least.

He stands up and laughs, what I later learn to be sarcastic, and pulls his arm backwards before his fist is sent flying into Soonhyun's jaw.

I gasp, alongside the entirety of our classmates, and stare at him in shock. V's chest heaves heavily as he is instantly pulled away from the poor boy by Yoongi.

That's when I realise that V immediately turned from rebellious to kind after the accident, instead of the gradual process which we completed together before the accident. He tried his hardest to turn into the person he learned he had turned into -- but quick, too quickly. He's going back to his old roots. The violent, rebellious and unkind ones. And I know I may be the only one to stop him again.
