Galentine's Day

For the senior dance happening at the retirement center of Pawnee, Leslie had recruited everyone against their will to come and help. It was a big deal to Leslie, and that made Olivia want to help her sister out.

As the two sisters walked to the shoe shine they could hear Andy's band practicing for the dance, since Leslie had demanded they help out as well. "I've got you, under my skin." Andy sings with a horrible attitude.

"So there's that one, I guess." He looks at his band with no enthusiasm.

"You sound ready for the dance tomorrow." Leslie compliments.

"I don't know about these old fogey songs, Leslie. Why can't we just do our originals? I just wrote a new song, okay. Bottom line: it's called sex hair. It's about how you know when someone's just had sex 'because of how their hair gets matted up in the back. It's awesome."

"Andy, I think you would kill the whole retirement population if you did that."  Olivia tells him, which causes a smile to come across his face. "That is not a good thing Andy." He whips the smile off his face quickly.

"Think of it this way. These songs are exactly like the songs you usually play, except instead of modern rock, they're jazzy standards from the '40s." Leslie tries to explain.

A determined look crosses Andy's face. "You got a point."

"Yeah. You're gonna do great." Olivia tells him to pant him on the back which gives a boost of confidence. Leslie, satisfied with her check-in leaves, continues down city hall but Olivia stays.

Andy looks at her confused and asks, "Aren't you gonna go with your sister?"

"No, I'd rather be with you." Olivia says, but releasing the phrasing of her words she adds on, "Listening to the band is a lot more fun than dance planning."

Andy with a beaming smile on his face looks from Olivia to the band. "All right, guys."

But before they could play Kyle, who's been sitting in the show shine chair the whole time, asks "I've been here for a half an hour. Can I get my shoeshine?"

"Kyle, I'm gonna lose my shit on you if you ask me one more time."

Olivia was in the fellowship hall setting up for the dance. Setting up flowers on every table. She was wearing a pink short dress, with a square neckline and crosses over her waist.

Andy was on stage with the band practicing for the show later that day. Once he finished singing the old sounding song he turned to the band.

"I mean, that sucked, didn't it?"

"Maybe if you sang it like Louis Armstrong?" The bassist suggested.

"Maybe. Yeah I mean, here's the thing, though. Who is that?" Only to be met with silence from the whole band.

"My problem is I don't know how to tell if we're doing good because, when you play rock, It's easy to know if you're doing great because chicks will flash their boobs at you when you're up on stage. You're like, oh, that must have sounded pretty good. But I can't... If that happens here my eyes will fall out of my head, and I'll die..." Andy explains sitting on the stage.

"Hey." Ann walks from the dance floor to Andy sitting on the stage. "You guys sound good."

A relieved look crosses Andy's face. "You really think so? It's impossible to tell. It's like bizarro land out there. As soon as we finish a song, it's dead silence."

"What do you expect, you know? They're like a million years old."

"Well, I'm glad you like it. You were a big supporter of the band."

Olivia walks up from the crowd with a water bottle in hand, she makes her way to Andy and hands said water bottle to him.

"Finally found where they had them, your break's over." Olivia says she does not notice Ann there and relives that horrible jealous feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"Olivia, cracking the whip." He smiles before chugging the whole bottle, then throwing it on stage somewhere.

"You should play The Way You Look Tonight. That's a good one." Olivia suggests as Andy walks on stage to reconfigure with the band. It only leaves Ann and Olivia standing next to one another. Olivia doesn't acknowledge Ann, looking just at Andy on stage.

"Next one's going out to a special little lady named Olivia Knope." Andy looks at her on stage, and starts singing. Olivia looked solely at him from the audience. Andy was staring back at her as well, like the song was only for her. Olivia liked to imagine that it was only her and Andy in the room.

Ann from next Olivia looked at the two with confusion. All of sudden all the time that Olivia and Andy were spending with each other started making sense. After Andy came to the hospital one of Ann's coworker friends had told her all about a woman that rushed to Andy's side and was very close to him. Realizing that made Ann feel a little jealous.
"Are you guys..." Ann looks to Olivia, but then changes her mind. "Never mind."

Olivia was sitting alone, just people watching, and watching Andy play on stage.

Olivia looked to her left to see an old couple, very much in love. They were staring into each other's eyes and holding hands very softly. She didn't think much of it and kept looking around.

The same way Andy holds her hand.

Olivia stops breathing for a moment, she whipped her gaze around the couple. That was also the way she and Andy were looking at each other when he was singing to her...

Olivia's face became more and more flushed, the more she began to think.

'That moment in the hospital, the jealousy, the possessiveness, the kiss on the cheek...'

She looks down at the table away from Andy, her eyes wide. Olivia finally had the answer to her question of why she's been feeling so jealous, but now she didn't know if she liked the answer.

She wanted to be with Andy.

Olivia raised her eyes from the table to Andy playing in the band on stage. He had a dumb look on his face, but his face was adorable not dumb. He was sweet, not stupid.

She put her hand on her heart to feel it thumping out of her chest. Before Olivia could think more she heard the chair next to her being pulled out and someone sitting down, Olivia tore her eyes away from the stage and to Ron Swanson sitting next to her.

"Everything okay, Knope?" He says calmly,  must have noticed her internal conflict. She looks at Ron for a moment and decides there is no point in lying to him, he'll know anyway.

"I think I have feelings for Andy." Olivia says very quietly, feeling weird saying it out loud.

"Of course you do." Ron says like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Olivia throws him an innocent questioning gaze and he explains.

"You're a tough person. Been trained to be from your mother. You carry all that with you, like a well made canew." Ron points to her heart then to the stage where Andy's playing. "With him, you can let all that go. Be free of the chains that bind you. You're just a girl and he's just a guy, you can be simple and good for each other."

Watching Andy from the crowd, and after hearing Ron, it was official.  And Olivia did like it, it gave that unknown feeling in her heart a place and a meaning. She remembers the first time she met Andy. 'It's weird when someone comes into your life and you expect nothing out of it, but suddenly right there in front of you is everything you need.' She thought to herself.

She was in love with Andy Dwyer, her best friend.
