Chapter 63: Alone at Sea

"Alright, have you got all the stuff needed to continue construction?" Y/n asked a building, who was wearing bright orange clothing topped off with a bright yellow helmet.

"Yeah, we should be good to go." The builder, who was named Ron said. "I don't know how you managed to keep all the floors from collapsing, but whatever you did, it'll make this job much easier."

"I had some help from a few friends." Y/n chuckled. "Speaking of which, a small green girl might be coming here to help work on the bunker, her name's Peridot."

"Huh, I think we've seen her already ..." He said. "Angry one, isn't she?"

"Yep." Y/n chuckled. "You sure you guys can handle all this work? I don't mind jumping in if you need me to."

"Nah, we'll be fine." Ron reassured as he waved off the offer. "Like I said, the stuff you've already done will make this job ten times easier."

"Y/N!!!" A little boy shouted as he was seen in the distance running towards them.

"Well, if you need me I'll most likely be in the lighthouse." Y/n told as he went to leave, but added. "If I'm not available, Peridot should be."

"Take care." Ron said as he waved, returning to his team that surrounded the bunker.

Y/n walked in Steven's direction, and to his surprise, was even closer than before. "Steven! I didn't think you were so fast!" Y/n laughed a bit as Steven took Y/n's legs in a hug. "What's up?"

Steven took a few deep breaths. "Me and dad are planning a surprise for Lapis!" He cheered with a toothy grin. "We want you to come with us!"

"Oh? What did you have planned?" Y/n asked as Steven separated from the hug.

"We're gonna take Lapis on a boat ride!" Steven cheered as he started pulling Y/n down the hill, and into Beach City.

"Er ... Are you sure that's a good idea?" Y/n questioned, unsure of it. "Since Lapis has been through a lot ... I'm not sure she really wants to be around the ocean too much."

"B-but water is what Lapis controls! She can't hate it because of one bad experience!" Steven whined.

"Alright, alright ..." Y/n relented. "We can try, but I'm not sure how she'll handle it."

"Come on, we can see dad at the car wash!" Steven smiled as he pulled the tall human in its direction.

Steven continued to pulled Y/n all the way to the car wash, where Greg was just finished with cleaning the Pizza delivery car. "Thanks Mr Universe!" Jenny smiled as the car looked absolutely fresh.

"It's not problem!" Greg smiled as Y/n and Steven approached from the side.

"Hey Steven. Hey Y/n." Jenny greeted as she climbed in. "Are you going to Sour Cream's rave later?"

Steven gasped. "Yeah! We should totally go!" He cheered.

"Eh, why not." Y/n shrugged. "We can bring Lapis, and Peridot."

"Awesome, but I've gotta go, dad's probably wondering where I am." Jenny told, starting to drive off. "Seeya laters!"

Steven, Y/n, and Greg waved, before Greg turned to the two humans. "First customer is a while ..." He gave a dry chuckle. "But what bring you two here?"

"I was just telling Y/n about the surprise for Lapis!" Steven cheered, bouncing up and down in excitement.

"Oh! Really? You joining us Y/n?" Greg asked.

"Yep, should be fun." Y/n nodded. "Have you got a name for the boat?"

"Uhhh ..." Steven trailed off. "It has a name, but it's not the best name ..."

"What is it?" Y/n asked as Steven started rubbing his neck.

"S.S. Misery ..." Steven told.

"Oh ... That's ..." Y/n started, wondering what Lapis would think of the name. "Definitely something."

"We should change it!" Steven said.

"We can't just change it." Greg added, running a hand through his long hair. "Maybe use some paper to put over the name?"

"Okay ... But what should we change it too?" Steven pondered.

Y/n clicked his fingers, causing Steven and Greg to look at him with interest. "We'll call it ... Li'l Lappy!"

--------------

Y/n held Lapis' hand as he led her towards the docks, the blue gem had her water wings covering her eyes while Steven was waiting with Greg at the boat.

"I'm starting to guess the surprise, Y/n." Lapis said with a sly smile.

"I told you to close your eyes!" Y/n complained.

"Sorry." Lapis laughed, closing her eyes.

"Okay, wait here." Y/n told as he let go of her hand, quickly joining Greg, and Steven.

Lapis retracted her water wings and saw Steven, Y/n, and Greg standing in front of a yacht.

"Surprise!" The three humans said at once.

"Hmm ..." Lapis hummed, mildly unimpressed.

"We bought a boat!" Steven cheered.

"Uh, correction. We rented a boat. I may be rich, but buying a boat would be going a bit... overboard." Greg joked as he snapped his fingers at the other two humans.

"Ayyy!" Steven cheered.

"Ayyyyy." Y/n joined in after.

"Ayyyyyyy!" The three humans said together at the cheesy pun.

"Just a joke I picked up from some sailors. They have a surprisingly clean sense of humour." Greg admitted.

"So what do you think?" Steven asked hopefully.

"It's nice, Steven... but I don't know." Lapis told, shifting slightly.

"Lapis, I know you spent a really long time fused with Jasper at the bottom of the ocean, but you're not Malachite anymore. And water is a part of who you are. You can't let one bad experience take that away from you." Steven added, trying to reassure her.

"It was more than one." Lapis said, rubbing her arm.

Y/n walked up and placed both hands on Lapis' shoulder. "Just give it a chance. I promise we'll make this the most fun you've ever had."

"Y/n, Steven, I... don't deserve this." Lapis said, looking down.

"Of course you do! We even named her Li'l Lappy." Y/n told as he took a ahnd of Lapis' shoulder to gesture at the boat.

Greg gave a thumbs-up to the name, until he realized the taped cover-up paper had fallen off, revealing the yacht's real name S.S. MISERY., much to Lapis' amusement.

"Okay. I'll give it a chance. But, just one." Lapis snorted, laughing in her cute Lapis way.

"Woah!" Steven laughed as he was suddenly picked up by Y/n.

Lapis then picked up Y/n, and flew on-board the yacht with the two humans. Greg is in the bridge, preparing to pilot the boat.

"You three ready to set sail?" Greg said over a com speaker.

"Aye, aye, Captain!" Steven saluted.

"Sure." Y/n nodded.

"Yes." Lapis said simply as she clung to Y/n's arm.

"Full speed ahe- Woah!" Greg started to say, but then panicked as he fell backwards as the yacht jerks. A piece of wood gets pulled off the dock, since Greg forgot to remove the cord keeping the yacht at bay.

"Ah, geez, you think anyone will notice ...?" Greg said to himself, already messing something up.

The boat sails off into the wide ocean, leaving the Beach City Dock behind. Y/n, Steven, and Lapis then join Greg at the helm.

"Wow, I think I did a number on that dock. Maybe somebody else should take a shot at being captain." Greg said as he turn around and took off his Captain's hat. "What do you say, Captain Lazuli?"

"I shouldn't." Lapis dismissed, still clinging to Y/n.

"Go for it, Lapis." Y/n said.

"Don't put me in charge!" Lapis said agitatedly, gripping Y/n tighter for comfort. "...Oh, sorry. I mean, y-you shouldn't trust me with the boat."

"Uh, that's okay. Don't worry about it. We can all be first mates, so there's no pressure. Only fun stuff today!" Steven reassured with his cheery smile.

Lapis smiled, pleased with Steven's plan. "Lapis, you can still wear the hat, if you want." Greg said as he offered her the hat.

"Thanks, but I'm not putting that on my body." Lapis deadpanned.

"Fair enough." Y/n chuckled a bit at her response.

Greg put the hat back on, and turned to the steering wheel. "Let's set a course for fuuuuun!"

Greg sailed the boat further out to sea, only stopping once Beach City was well behind them. Lapis clings to Y/n even more as they get further out, but with reassurance from both of her favourite humans, it was enough to make her relax.

"You should sound the horn." Y/n said as Steven did it a couple of times, of course he needed help to reach it though.

"I ... Don't know." Lapis shifted a bit.

"Come on, Lapis! It's fun!" Steven cheered, but still saw Lapis' unsure expression. "Y/n will give you a hug if you do!"

"Okay ..." She agreed with a slight blush, placing her hand on the handle, and pulling down. Lapis was surprised at how fun sounding the horn was, and repeated the motion a few more times, actually getting the blue gem to laugh.

Greg was not happy about the horn being repeatedly sounded, so he covered his ears, and rolled his eyes, but once she was finished, she looked at Y/n to claim her reward.

"Come here then." Y/n laughed a bit, opening his arms for a hug.

Lapis did a small giggle before running up to the tall human and embracing him, much to the delight of Steven. "Awh! You're such a cute couple!" He cooed, making Lapis and Y/n to blush a bit.

"What?! You two are together?!" Greg exclaimed.

"Steven ... I will tickle you." Y/n told.

"Ah! No! Please!" Steven said as he ran to the deck of the boat. "I'm sorry!"

Y/n separated from Lapis, much to her dismay, and chased after Steven. "I'm gonna tease you when you see Connie next." Y/n chuckled as he cornered Steven on the deck.

"No, please!" Steven said dramatically. "Forgive me!"

"It's too late." Y/n said in a fake evil voice as he stood over Steven, who was pretending to cower on the floor. Y/n started poking at Steven's sides, causing giggles to erupt from the boy, and after a few seconds, Steven erupted into a full-on laughing fit.

Lapis and Greg join the two on the deck, but Greg stands over on the side so he can start fishing while Lapis wanders over to the two laughing humans. "What're you two doing?" Lapis asked with an eyebrow raised.

Steven's laughing died down, allowing him to compose himself as he stood up. "Sorry ... Y/n was tickling me." Steven said, wiping some tears away.

"Tickling you ...?" Lapis asked, even more confused.

"It's what humans do to make people laugh." Y/n said as his laughing died down too.

"Hmm ..." Lapis hummed with a little smirk, obviously noting it down in her gem.

"Hey guys!" Greg called out from behind. "Wanna come fish?"

The three of them walk over to Greg. "What are you doing?" Lapis asked.

"Catching fish." Greg replied with a smile as he cast his fishing rod into the water.

"Oh, I can help!" Lapis smiled, but then stepped back and took a deep breath. She began using her hydrokinesis to lift the water around the fish hook.

"What the?!" Greg gasped at the sudden display of power.

Lapis lifted a large mass of water out of the ocean, encasing plenty of fishes inside.

"Woah." Y/n said.

"That's a pretty uh... fancy way of catching fish." Greg admitted as he swallowed.

"That's 'cause Lapis is super strong!" Steven cheered as he punched his fist in the air.

Y/n chuckled. "'Course she is." Y/n said. "She's Lapis Lazuli."

Lapis blushed at the compliment, struggling to keep the water suspended, but quickly got a grip. "Well, I uh, appreciate the gesture, but I-I think it would be safer to stick to the old-fashioned way of doing it." Greg nervously chuckled, not fond of the whole magic idea.

"Oh, uh... Sure." Lapis said, dropping the large mass of water back into the ocean, causing a large ripple that shakes the yacht.

"Wow, Lapis! That was ama..." Steven started, but Lapis put her hand on Steven's head to calm him down. "zing..." He finished.

"So, how do you fish the old-fashioned way?" Lapis asked, interested.

"Oh, it's pretty simple. You start with a rod, and you put a hook on the end of your line. And then, when you feel a nibble, you reel it in. And there it is. You've caught yourself a fish to eat!" Y/n explained as Lapis grabbed onto Y/n's hand.

"But why would a fish ever bite a hook?" Lapis said.

"You got to bait it. Put something on it you know it wants, like a worm or a $20 bill. Here, I'll show you." Greg added, throwing the hook with a bait on it back into the water.

The three stay by Greg's side as they wait for something to happen, and it doesn't take long for Lapis to begin getting impatient. "When does the fish part happen?" Lapis asked.

"Well, sometimes it isn't about the fish you keep, but the company you catch." Greg said, then noticing a nibble. "Woah! I got a bite!"

"Lapis, here! Give it a try!" Greg added as he handed the fishing rod to Lapis "Hold it just like that and reel it in slowly."

"Like this?" Lapis asked as she started turning the reel.

"You got it! It looks like a big one!" Y/n reassured as he looked over Lapis' shoulder.

Lapis continued to turn the reel, but is suddenly pulled forward with great force.

"Lapis!" Y/n fretted as he was quick to hold onto her with Steven jumping to help a second later.

"Steven!" Greg panicked as he held onto Steven.

Y/n, Steven, and Greg helped Lapis from being pulled into the ocean.

"You got it, Lapis! Reel it in!" Steven grunted.

"It's... pulling... so hard!" Lapis complained, but soon, a silhouetted entity is reeled in, about to emerge from the water. Lapis suddenly sensed a familiar presence when the fishing rod snapped in half and the entity sinks back into the water. Lapis ran up to the edge and stared down at the water with great concern.

"Looks like this pole rental turned into a pole purchase. But, you did a great job tangling with that beast." Greg said as he looked down at the broken rod.

"Y-yeah. Don't worry about that one getting away." Steven reassured as Y/n, and him joined Lapis.

"Oh, thank you." Lapis said.

"Welp, that's my adventure quota for the day. I'll be at the controls. Holler if you need me." Greg said as Steven, and Y/n looked at the older man.

"No worries. Lapis, what do you..." Y/n started, but noticed Lapis had left the area. "Lapis?"

Y/n, and Steven look around and notice Lapis sitting on a patio lounge chair on the deck. They walk up to her and sit on the opposite chair.

"Hey. Whatcha doing?" Steven asked as he kicked his feet.

"I just thought I'd sit for a bit." Lapis admitted.

"You looked like a real pro fisher before the pole snapped." Y/n complimented with a smile.

"Thanks ..." Lapis blushed at the compliment.

"Hmm. So, fishing was a bust, but I-I got something that'll cheer you up. Shuffleboard! What do you say?" Steven asked, getting excited to play a new game, but the yacht suddenly started to shake as something is heard crashing against it.

"Ahh! Ugh!" Steven yelped as he fell over, and got up groaning. "What was that?"

"I don't know, but it didn't sound good." Y/n commented as he managed to stay standing. The yacht shook again, almost making Steven fall over, but Y/n caught him in time.

"Are you two okay?" Lapis as she held onto Y/n.

"Yeah." Steven replied.

"What's going on?" Y/n questioned as the boat was still shaking.

"Steven! You got a moment?" Greg called out from the wheel.

"I'll be right back!" Steven said as he rushed from Y/n, and Lapis.

The boat continued to shake slightly, but it had calmed down enough so Lapis, and Y/n could stand properly. "Are you enjoying yourself?" Y/n asked as he held onto Lapis.

"Kinda ..." Lapis admitted. "Sorry ... Just a lot to think about."

"Don't be sorry." Y/n smiled, but then turned his head to the helm as an explosion was heard. "Jeez, this is turning out to be quite the party."

Lapis snorted slightly, placing her head on Y/n's shoulder. "What did Steven mean when he called us a couple?" Lapis asked, having some idea what that means in earth culture thanks to Camp Pining Hearts, but still not entirely sure.

"Oh ... That's just Steven." Y/n waved off. "He just loves teasing people ... That's all."

Before Lapis had the chance to speak about it some more, Steven came onto the deck with a forlorn look on his face.

"Lapis? Y/n? Um ... I have some not-so-good news. There's trouble with the engine, and we might be stuck out here for a while." Steven said, earning a sigh from Lapis. "I'm so sorry! This whole thing is my fault. I just wanted you to have fun, but everything's a mess. I shouldn't have made you come on this trip."

"Don't worry Steven." Y/n reassured. "I'll take a look in a sec."

"It's my fault. I'm the one to blame." Lapis sighed as she separated from Y/n slightly.

"That's not true." Steven said.

"I'm really trying to enjoy it out here, but... I can't stop thinking about being fused as Malachite, how I used all my strength to hold her down in the ocean, and how I was always battling against Jasper to keep her bound to me." Lapis explained.

"But it's not like that anymore. You don't have to be with Jasper." Steven argued.

"That's not it. I... I ..." Lapis tried explaining, but couldn't.

"You miss her." Y/n said solemnly.

"Yeah ..." Lapis nodded.

"What?!" Steven gasped.

"We were fused for so long." Lapis sighed.

"But... she's terrible." Steven argued.

"I'm terrible! I did horrible things! I-I broke your dad's leg. I stole Earth's ocean! Go on! Tell me I'm wrong!" Lapis listed, hating herself for feeling what she feels.

"You're wrong." Y/n told as he crossed his arms, but before the conversation could progress any further, the boat began shaking again, and soon, an orange hand grabbed onto the side of the deck.

"Finally!" Jasper spat as she revealed herself to the three of them, lightning striking off in the distance behind her as she glared at the group.

"Jasper!" The three of the said.

"I thought I'd never catch up with you." Jasper said as she slowly walked towards the group.

"You've been following us?" Lapis fretted, suddenly hiding behind Y/n, and gripping him tightly.

"I've been following you!" Jasper told as she pointed a finger at Lapis. "You can't hide from me, not even behind that pathetic human."

Lapis gasped in horror as Jasper continued to get closer to her. "Stay back!" Steven proclaimed as he summoned his shield and stood in front of Y/n, and Lapis.

"Steven what-" Y/n tried to intervene, not wanting Steven to be hurt.

"This dulled-down version of Rose Quartz works for you now? You're pointing that shield the wrong way. She's the one you should be afraid of." Jasper laughed menacingly.

"That's not true." Lapis said.

"You can't lie to me. I've seen what you're capable of. I thought I was a brute, but you... you're a monster." Jasper started, scaring Lapis even more.

Thunder crashed again as Lapis stared frightfully at Jasper. "Lapis doesn't want anything to do with you!" Y/n shouted in Lapis' defence, internally punching himself for not having a weapon.

"This is between... US!" Jasper snapped as she swiped at Steven, causing him to be sent flying across the deck, and then groaning in pain as he lay on the deck floor semi-unconscious.

"Steven!" Lapis, and Y/n shouted.

"Leave them alone!" Y/n demanded as he stood defensively in front of Lapis.

"Or what?" Jasper laughed. "I can't believe you gave me a hard time, but that won't happen again."

Jasper was about to punch Y/n, but even without his armour, his reactions were quick, allowing him to duck, and then throw an uppercut punch directly in Jasper's jaw.

Thanks to his robotic left arm, it didn't hurt him, and threw Jasper to the other end of the deck. "AH!" She yelled in pain, not expecting that.

"Lapis, get Steven, and Greg, and then get out of here!" Y/n ordered, not wanting to see any of them hurt.

"DON'T YOU MOVE LAZULI!" Jasper yelled, extremely pissed off by now.

"Ugh ... Y/n ... Lapis ..." Steven groaned in a whisper, getting up slowly, but still too weak to fully stand.

"I didn't expect a human like you to have so much fight." Jasper growled, but it had some praise to it. "Yellow Diamond will be pleased if I captured you."

Jasper then jumped over to Y/n, ready for another fight. Y/n managed to land another hit on Jasper's chest with his robotic arm, but this time, the tanking orange gem simply shrugged it off, and grabbed Y/n by the throat before he was able to evade.

"Y/n!" Lapis cried as Jasper tightened her grip around his throat, causing him to start choking.

"As much as I would love to see you in pain, I've got more important matters to deal with." Jasper snarled, throwing him at the edge of the deck, causing him to collide with the railing.

Y/n struggled to breathe for a few short seconds as all the oxygen was blow from his body because of the collision, rendering him out-of-commission for a time.

Lapis tried to run up to Y/n, and Steven, but Jasper grabbed her hand and pulled her back. Jasper then clapped her hands around Lapis' hand and kneeled before her.

"Let's be Malachite again." Jasper stated as thunder was heard again.

"Why... would you want that?" Lapis said confused.

"I was wrong about fusion. You made me understand! Malachite was bigger and stronger than both of us! We could fly!" Jasper said with a sadistic smile.

"Lapis, don't listen to her!" Steven shouted as he moved over to Y/n to check if he was okay.

"Stay out of this!" Jasper shouted as she stood up, and turned to him.

"I was terrible to you. I liked taking everything out on you. I needed to; I-I hated you. It was bad!" Lapis listed.

"It'll be better this time. I've changed. You've changed me. I'm the only one who can handle your kind of power." Jasper argued, wanting to be fused with Lapis again.

Jasper approached maniacally towards Lapis, backing her to the front of the yacht's bridge cabin. "Together, we'll be unstoppable!" Jasper yelled.

"Lapis ..." Y/n croaked out as he looked over to Lapis.

Lapis began to ponder. She glanced at Y/n, and Steven lying on the ground, as she made up her decision. "NO!" She screamed.

"What!?" Jasper snapped in disbelief.

"What we had wasn't healthy. I never want to feel like I felt with you. Never again! So just, go!" Lapis explained, taking a defensive stance.

"Lapis!" Jasper growled, wanting her to see reason.

"She said No!" Steven shouted as he ran up behind Jasper.

"Leave her alone!" Y/n added as he joined Steven's side.

"This is your fault." Jasper said as she then growled. "I'll SHATTER YOU BOTH!"

Jasper started charging towards Steven, and Y/n, but Lapis then quickly summoned a giant water arm that punched right through the yacht and into Jasper, sending her flying off the yacht and far away into the ocean.

"Lapis, you did it!" Steven cheered, dissipating his shield, and running to hug Lapis.

"Well done, Lapis." Y/n said, rubbing his neck.

"Are you three okay!? Wha-?!" Greg ran onto the deck, but then stared at the hole in the yacht's deck, as the boat began to sink into the water. "What... happened?..."

"Uhh, it's kind of a long story." Steven told with a nervous chuckle.

Lapis let Steven climb onto her back, and then picked up Y/n, allowing Greg hold onto him. Greg then glanced back at the sinking yacht in grief.

"I guess I bought a boat after all." Greg said.

"Eh, sorry, Dad. But hey, the ocean's really beautiful from up here." Steven commented.

"Yeah. It is." Lapis smiled.

"Couldn't agree more." Y/n chuckled.

---------------------

"You sure you're okay, Y/n." Lapis asked as she walked across the beach with him.

"Yeah, I'll be fine ..." Y/n said as he rubbed at his neck, red marks already began to appear. "I put up a good fight without having any weapons."

The two walked across the beach because Lapis didn't want to return to the lighthouse straight away, but still said farewell to Steven when she dropped him and Greg at the car wash.

"I can't believe she was following me ..." Lapis mumbled.

"I completely forgot she existed ..." Y/n admitted, causing Lapis to snort with laughter.

"How mean." Lapis teased.

"I'm the mean one?" Y/n laughed at bit as he pointed at himself. "You're the one that literally punched her into space."

Lapis laughed a bit more. "Yeah ... That was pretty terrible." She said.

Since Lapis had returned from the boat trip the three humans took her on, she had felt better, it had gotten something off her chest. "You did great though." Y/n reassured, taking Lapis' hand with his, and giving it a squeeze. "You stood your ground, and you told her what you felt. I'm proud."

"R-really ...?" Lapis blushed at the praise. "Y-you mean that?"

"Of course, it's true." Y/n nodded, smiling at the ocean gem. "How do you feel now?"

Lapis took a deep breath. "Better ... That was bothering me for some time ..." She admitted, taking another deep breath. "Still bad ... But ... Better."

"I'm glad to hear it." Y/n said as the two continued to walk.

Lapis hummed for a second, remembering what Y/n was doing with Steven. She quickly moved her hands to his sides, prodding, and poking methodically in order to find his ticklish spot. "HAha! ... Lap – LAPIS!" Y/n started laughing as she quickly found it.

Y/n fell to the sand with Lapis falling on top of him as she continued her vicious onslaught. "Too late! I can't stop!" Lapis teased as she continued to tickle.

"PLeasE ...! LApiS!" Y/n laughed even more; he forgot the last time he had this much fun.

"Do you want me to stop?" She asked innocently as she continued.

"Yes!" Y/n shouted, barely able to contain his laughter.

Lapis stopped, making a snort sound as she started giggling. "I-I'm gonna tell Peridot about this!" She laughed. "You looked so precious!"

Y/n pouted a bit as he sat up with crossed arms. "No fair ..." He mumbled.

As Lapis was giggling, he quickly took the chance to start tickling her, and to their surprise, it actually worked. "Y/NN! HaHA! StOP I'M SORRY!" She shouted as she laughed even harder.

Y/n didn't stop as he started laughing too. "I should tell Peridot about this too! You look adorable!" Y/n teased as he carried on tormenting the ocean gem.

Oh no!

Y/n took an L with Jasper

Oh well, I wrote it like that because let's be real, he's only a human underneath, even with the robotic arm. I think, without his armour, Y/n is probably on the same level as a Quartz ... not strength wise ... Well, maybe with his robot arm, but if he could generally protect his body, then he'd probably be on the same level as a Quartz ... Maybe even Jasper, but not this time.

I like this idea because it shows that he's not some god figure ... He's just a human.

Let me know what you think :D
